She’d still be here if they utilized a harness with a clip system to attach to each segment of the metal roping you use to get up and down half dome
I'm not a hiker and that's the first thing that I thought of when I saw half dome. Why people don't do that is beyond me.
@@blahboy2600 smart ppl use it I’ve seen it
I just summitted Half Dome a few weeks ago. A few of the wood slats are missing, but if you have good shoes, it shouldn't be a problem. You assume the risk because getting a permit is extremely difficult. I'm curious what condition her shoes were. FYI - some people summit it without the cables.
@@ActivelyYielding5.56 It's unnecessary, but do whatever makes you comfortable. When I was there a few weeks ago, only 2 out of 100 people had a harness on. Everyone made it up and down safely. It's an 18.5 mile trek.
@@Connect662 it’s not unnecessary when rain comes down all of a sudden and people are slipping on the granite. One wrong slip and you’re tumbling over 200 feet down at least
Prayers on the tragic loss of this young woman and for her family on their immeasurable loss.
Very composed to have lost his daughter in such an unusual and surprising way😵😲,It's very strange to see a father not shed tears when his daughter died tragically....😒😒
Man sad situation. But why not bring some clips that weigh a few grams to lock onto the cables? Man totally preventable.
He could do that, order his daughter to clip , but he didn't. He looks quite content to be grieving. Any life insurance on daughter? Now he wants to make cables safe. Gimme a break!, The cables were not the problem, the problem was him and his daughter not clipping themselves to the cables. Duh! The daughter paid with her dear life for her recklessness.
They HAD THOSE! On the way UP!!L. But NOT for the trip DOWN, scared of a little RAIN. IN a HURRY, SKIP the safety stuff!!!
NO WAY she played THIRTEEN SPORTS. He’s LYING!!!
Have done Half Dome cables many times...including before there was a line to go up....Rule #1...Get to the cables by 10:30am and down before 12:30 pm and you will avoid a "sudden" thunderstorm....There is no leeway in that rule...Or you risk a slippery rock which is dangerous...To call the cables dangerous and the NPS has to fix something is just not taking ownership in proper planning..Half dome is no joke and plenty of people I have witnessed in dry conditions are "frozen" with fear on the cables and no one can get around them...making it dangerous for everyone.
Well said. ✌️
@@swimmingturtle00 not really. He neglects to point out that a sudden thunderstorm can happen at any time. It’s simply laughable to think they can’t happen between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm.
There's a Ranger at the base of Half Dome checking permits from the lottery system. Have to wonder if the Ranger warned them about incoming weather, as I assume it's part of their job to stay up to date on weather systems in the area? If they were warned and decided to chance it anyway, I don't know what to say. I'm sure with the lottery system and long hike to get there, it's very disappointing to choose not to do it or have to turn back, but better to try again on another day and live to see another sunrise.

They were informed about the weather. They also observed the rain clouds so for him to say this storm came out of nowhere is simply not true . My heart breaks for him and his family but I feel like his grief is causing him to place blame .

So well spoken and strong composure by her father, thank you for the insight into this young women- God go with you all ❤
This guy doing alot of interviews for just losing his daughter, and out of all of them I've yet to see 1 tear. Dude is a weird 1.
I agree most people wouldn’t want to talk to media or they’d just do 1 interview and say good enough, but everyone grieves differently.
He watched her fall to her death, that would put anyone in shock.

He may be enjoying the attention while drumming up support for his eventual lawsuit.
Spare us the interpretation where morons assume someone "must" do this or that on camera, as if that's how they always are in private.
Dad said the cables need to be stronger for other hikers. Yikes, this guy makes no sense. Your daughter didn’t have any the cables in the first place. Pathetic thing to say
They used cables to go up, he spoke about them in this interview.
Wonder if he had a life insurance on his daughter...He was reckless not clipping on cables, and his daughter was reckless too. Now he wants to make cables safe? I suspect he's planning to blame park rangers instead of himself. Clipping on cables had saved his daughter's life, the rest is BS
The journalist asked all the right questions so we find out what happened and how we can learn from Grace's tragedy. We learned who Grace who was and what made her unique (including her relationship with her loving father). We also learned about the family and how they will honour Grace's legacy. The journalist was respectful, thorough, and thoughtful. It was nice to hear Grace's story. I have this image of Jonathan Rohloff hiking with a beautiful vivacious young Grace on his back with him. Creepy dude he’s lying
I don't know if I have much of a say in this and I normally wouldn't do something like this, but I wanted to give my take into this whole situation. I have known the Rohloff's for many years, ever since elementary school(specifically around 4-5 grade I don't want to say the exact grade), and have become great friends with every one of them. So when I heard about what had happened, I had a ton of mixed emotions, but the prominent one being extreme grief. It would only make sense especially for someone whom you've known for many many years. I just have no words on how something this awful can happen to someone this young as they could've had an entire life's worth to live out their lives, and to have it cut so short is nothing but devastating, and it makes it harder to know that it happened to someone I knew near and dear to not only myself, but my family.
Now for those wondering if it was either the park's fault for not having proper precautions or the family's fault for not taking the warnings into consideration, I will just say it straight that it is no one's fault. While yes, there could've been much better safety measure taken by both parties involved, especially since Grace's father had stated that the sky was completely clear before it had started pouring completely out of nowhere, so you can't really blame them for not thinking about what would've happened. As for Yosemite National Park, I will admit it is quite foolish to not have proper safety measures to prevent tragedies like this, especially since this isn't the first time something like this has happened at Yosemite, however I can understand on why there wasn't any since it would take a ton of time to install those extra safety precautions in a timely manner. Either way, do not go blaming either the Rohloff's nor Yosemite for not doing anything to prevent this from happening, as no one could've predicted this happening in the first place.
I would like to speak about my experiences with Grace now. As stated before, I had known the Rohloff's for many years(almost 9 years now), so because of that, I had gotten to know each of the Rohloff's children. Now since Grace was a few years older than me, it was mostly just small chat and the every now and then greeting from elementary-middle school. It also didn't help that Grace was already in 8th grade when I met her, so I didn't have many opportunities to speak with her much since she was getting ready to move onto high school. However, when I started my freshman year of high school, things had ever so slightly changed. I had participated in the school's drama club since I have a hobby for theatre acting(not professionally, just for fun), and the play I had chosen just so happened to be the same play that Grace was in, so I had a few times to chat with her during that time. It wasn't until my junior year of high school that I'd spent without a doubt the most time with Grace in my life, as I had joined the track and field team and was a thrower for the team(specifically javelin and discus), and Grace just so happened to be the throwers coach for my high school. It was this time I had truly gotten to know more and more about Grace and how she was like, and I just have to say that there are possibly an infinite number of positives I can say about her. She was kind, funny, chill, and someone you could look up to as a role model, she really had it all. So when I had the terrible knews about her passing, I was just in total shock, it took me a while to comprehend what I had just heard.
I know there will be at least one person that might see this comment and think this is fake, so I'll just say this, I don't care if you think that, your utter nonsense will mean nothing at the end of the day if it's directed towards me. But I absolutely do not want to hear 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 going around taking this situation as a joke, or saying stupid things to get attention. I know 𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘯 well that your sad butt is only doing this for attention, and no one is buying any of your crap, especially if you could be doing something actually worth your time and energy. Sorry about that, I just had to give those types of people a peace of my mind. Anyways, Grace's legacy will never be forgotten in my mind, and while I am sad that she is no longer physically with us, at least it's good to know that she is in better hands now.
To the Roholff's, if you see this comment, just to let you know, I am deeply, deeply sorry for your loss, and I hope this comment finds you well.
Rest in Peace:

This guy’s body language, and demeanor aren’t consistent with someone who just lost a loved one (in this case his own child) to a tragic accident. Did anyone investigate him for foul play? Honestly, so very tragic, could e been avoided by waiting for a different day.
I don’t see the point in doing this though.
According to Yosemite's website, the Half Dome cables were installed in 1919. The system consists of long metal cables anchored to the rock and supported by posts, with wooden boards placed between each set of posts.
Rohloff warned about the Half Dome cables’ dangers, comparing them to previous hiking experiences. He said he and his daughter had conquered many hikes across Arizona, including Humphreys Peak, the tallest peak in the state. They also hiked the Grand Canyon a few times a year, he said.
"I mean, hiking the Grand Canyon, there's nothing quite as challenging. The overall trail at Yosemite is not more physically challenging than the Grand Canyon, but the cable system is unnecessarily dangerous," Rohloff said.
He described the rock as a slick granite with few bumps for foot traction. The wooden planks were about 10 feet apart, without side planks or harnesses attached to the cables.
Grace Rohloff, 20, was hiking with her father on July 13 and had reached the summit of Yosemite's Half Dome in California, one of the park's most famous and challenging hikes. While she was descending the Half Dome cables during a sudden thunderstorm and downpour, she slipped on a wet part of the rock and fell down the mountain, said her father, Jonathan Rohloff.
"She did feel a little bit like Superwoman, like she could do anything," Rohloff said.
Yosemite National Park officials did not respond to a request for comment and have not issued a statement about the death. The park's guidance on the Half Dome hike mentions that "relatively few people have fallen and died on the cables" but does not specify how often.
“Superwoman” my ass she looks like she couldn’t hold herself up long enough
He does act weird he is talking like a random person is falling . I don't know
Stay off half dome!! It’s not safe!! Weather changes
The dad is disturbingly unemotional, not signs of grieving. Creepy. Who saw the daughter "slipping"? Foul play could have occurred. These are times where parents do horrible things to children, and vice versa. Anything to cash on a life insurance. Did the daughter have one on her?
This needs an investigation. Every behavior aspect on the videos I've seen reveals the father as personality disordered. I dont like saying this but my gut is telling me, like many of you are saying, that something is criminally wrong here. Praying for this situation all the way around. There is more to this unfortunately. RIP Grace, you were an obvious Angel on Earth and now in Heaven.
Where does Grace's mom fit into the equation? He's said they've hiked 1000's of miles. All the pics of just him and her. And why would a 20 year old have a bucket list? This story lacks something.
That’s his fault. I would never let my daughter go on a dangerous climb like that, even with me.
I am having a hard time with all of this. Parents are supposed to protect kids, not encourage them to do such a dangerous things.
@lisafaust3801 First of all, she’s an adult and can make her own decisions. Second, people are not dying daily on this hike. Thousands of people complete it each year without incident. Of course it’s a serious hike, but they are serious hikers. What do you expect him to do? Tell his adult daughter to not live her life?! Your comments make no sense. She’s not a four year old he’s allowing to reach for a pot of boiling water.
@@MT-rg4zb You have a point, yes. I happen to not be someone who takes part in activities that are dangerous and clearly this is one of those activities. I tend to NOT feel sorry for people who lose their lives while doing something dangerous. She was an adult, but still very, very young.
I feel indescribably sorry for him. To lose someone you love is one thing, but to lose a child is a completely different experience. God rest her soul ❤❤
Jonathan Rohloff said a ranger told them storms were in the forecast, and they did see clouds at times. But the sky was clear when they reached the cables, and atop the summit there were panoramic views - until thunder boomed.

“Honey, I LOST the kid!!”
If she had been utilizing Via Ferrata gear she would be alive today. The gear clipped into the cable, coupled with a harness, gloves and a helmet, would not have prevented her from falling but it would have stopped her at the first cable anchoring point and prevented her from falling off the dome. Mr. Rohloff can work to increase the use of such gear and thereby make the climb safer.
Yosemite is such a beautiful place. I hope she didnt suffer. NPS please try to make safer if possible.
Honestly how much safer does it really need to be ? I feel like as humans we are sometimes a little too entitled when it comes to being one with nature....like maybe we don't belong up there ? It just doesn't seem logical to me to climb up on a huge piece of rock that is hundreds of feet up off the ground and then expect there to be no risks involved.... There are other places to hike that aren't as dangerous . Hearing that they ignored the warnings about weather and ignored their own observations of the rain clouds coming in and went up anyway ? Anyways my heart breaks for him and his family , but I feel like his grief is causing him to place blame .
God bless her family and friends ❤️ sounded like cool chick
I wonder if they were descending outside the cables/slats because he was in a hurry. They couldn't have been the only two people on the dome, you would be stuck at the pace of everyone in front of you heading down. Where are the statements from other witnesses?
This death was 100% preventable if the hikers acted more responsibly and used the proper safety gear. It's like they were driving without seatbelts, got into a car accident, and their heads went into the windshield. Totally preventable.

I know that this interview was not easy for this Dad. I really feel and have compassion for the young woman. To me she was like a child in my eyes just starting out on life. I’m speaking from being much older. I don’t want to forget Grace. I want to honor her life and the life of so many who traveled or went into the outdoors and didn’t make it back home as planned. Things happen out of our hands that we didn’t plan. I totally understand. So many times I almost lost my life as a young person, and I became paralysed with fear. It’s taking me a lot to overcome. I don’t think young people should live their life in fear and I’m glad that Grace wasn’t. I do agree with the Dad that they definitely can make hiking there and other places, that include all places of travel and how we travel safer as there was no notification of the storm and this shows that Grace was very wise and wouldn’t have put herself or her father in any danger had she known. 💜💜💜💜💟🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

@@thatpickingguy People like me are called cops and we can spot a lie a Mile away and this guy is doing nothing but lying the same as you are right now. I’d love to be the one to interview him and get the real story. My feelings is there is more here than what is seen and likely it stinks to high heaven. Where’s the mother by the way seeing how you claim to be so close.
this guy looks like a serial killer🤣🤣id hate to see him mad. he is hot though😉
So if I race on my motorcycle and crash at 100mph on the track, I can be interviewed by "the news", so people can feel sorry for me?
Happened TWO DAYS AGO, and yet dads on TV without a tear in his eye, or a crack in his voice! Seriously, ...NO ONE QUESTIONS THAT?! I mean HE (supposedly) WITNESSED HIS OWN DAUGHTER DIE, LESS THAN 48 HOURS AGO, ...and now he's on TV giving an interview WITHOUT A SPECK OF EMOTION?! BOLLOCKS! What parent could talk about the death of their daughter without shedding a tear? I call BS!
@@kidwave1 Do you just keep copying and pasting the same uneducated comment???
Blame game .he probably asking a movie about it.
He’s creep AF. Check the life insurance policies.
He looks like a douche
That's what i said
Its her stupid fault and her parents for not educating her about half dome you think its an easy hike?!?!
Literally no one said it was easy. ? He and his daughter hike all the time. That’s their “thing”. They are very experienced.
