- My descent of the cables on Half Dome on 9/1/2015.. Due to the abundance of comments regarding the carabiner issue.. I decided to only run one biner the day of the hike.. Originally had a non locking biner to use but the day of that one was nowhere to be found.. My primary reasoning to be clipped in at all was in a scenario where another hiker took a tumble I didn’t want to get take with.. If you’re someone who is afraid of heights or don’t feel your fitness level is up to par then I’d agree with most the comments, two biners would be in your best/safest route.. Thanks for watching! :)

No, it's not. The camera gives a noticable fish-eye perspective. It's actually less steep than it looks here.
As a roofing contractor, I can tell you this is an absolute fact.
Also consider the years of wear and tear and hundreds of thousands of boots wearing the granite so smooth. I did it in 2020, you literally have to grip with your hands moreso than with your feet because they'll just slip and slide.

Just did this two days ago. At the 5:40 mark he looks back up. This gives you an idea of how steep this is. I have a super-fear of heights...I will not do this hike again, but I'm kinda proud (?) that I did it!
I am terrified of heights but did Angels Landing recently. This is next!
@@elizabethlima-torres1721 I LOVE Angels Landing! Possibly my favorite hike ever. I've done it twice and can't wait to get back there again! Good luck with Half Dome. The type of glove for gripping the cables is super important. Gardening gloves won't do the trick. Make sure they are rubber coated or something that is super "sticky".

@@stephenjones6030 Back in the 80's there was a pile of old cloth gloves at the bottom, that's what I used (with no harness) three times.
Fuck that is way to steep for me. I did angels landing a few years back but wouldn'r do this, no way.

Anyone thinking about doing it this way, please also consider:
1) Two carabiners so you’re never completely unclipped
2) A dynamic lanyard instead of static webbing. A fall of even a few feet can generate quite alot of force and you want that dissipated in the rope, not your spine. Either find something made for via ferrata, or a Beal Dynaloop or similar might work well.
3) A helmet
And make sure to practice with your system ahead of time.

someone didn't brief this guy, or just ignored instructions. his shadow shows the 2nd carabiner in his gear, never used it, and would completely unclip himself in between the poles.
@@darreldash I disagree. Fiddling with the biners makes a fall (marginally) more likely, although obviously removes the certain-fatal consequence assuming you use the system properly (clip both!!). But if you do fall and slide on that system, you're almost guaranteed to smack your head on the rock as it pulls you in a direction you're not expecting.
@@KimmyR3 Good catch! The same someone gave him the wrong equipment too. What you really want is a via ferrata set with an energy absorption component, that can catch a dynamic fall. If this was a vertical face, you're talking about a fall factor of like 10 if you fall on that little sling. Obviously you're just sliding on the rock instead of a freefall, but you're still going to build up quite a bit of momentum before hitting the hard anchor and dissipating it into your spine and internal organs.. not fun.
Yeah I would consider using a dynamic leash with two wire gates and using both of them instead of sometimes using the auto locker

Right it's like the sherpas on everest. The climbers doing this stuff are so intense and crazy. But then you look over at the guy who does this for a job all the time while carrying up a shit ton of gear, those are the real crazy ones. Can you imagine having to drill these posts into the rock? Insane

They do have a slide. Several hikers have ridden it....Unfortunately, the end of the ride is a harsh (fatal) one.

I've done it 3 times, and every time there was someone at the bottom of the cables that had hiked all the way there and then couldn't handle the final assent. A couple people were crying, it was very sad.
As a former Ranger and always, taught in mountain phase carry a 10 ft rope to make a harness and a 120ft to rappell with snaplinks and gloves. Crazy that anyone would ascend or descend without harness. Just read that a teenager fell to his death at half dome. Ur right in all aspects to use a harness.
I've done halfdome a half dozen times. never with a harness. Some summers I'd see little kids and people in their 60s doing it. It's not that bad.
@@danfinger Im with you on the not needing a harness, but when I have gone, ive seen too many kids get scared and freeze up on half dome. Might be smart to wear a harness if you are that young or if your older.

Dude I did this in 2012 with my hiking club. There was a lot of people on the day we did it and a guy in our club from India had a rig like that, but he went down inside the cables. He was holding people up and they got a little irritated with him but it was impossible to get totally mad because he was so polite. You have to imagine the guy saying in an Indian accent, "I'm sorry for holding you up but I have to be safe." In retrospect he was right to have a harness like that. I was scared shitless going down without one. I went down backwards.
People die occasionally. It happened not long ago. The harness is smart.

It's to support safe climbing as the video maker is showing him clipping into the cable.

My wife and I had talked about doing this climb and I had suggested to her that we could use some lines and carabiners and that way she wouldn't need to worry so much about falling to her death. But even alone I would use the technique with two carabiners where you make before you break. Thanks for sharing this with us. My arthritis would make a hike like this impossible now. I should have done it 40 years ago when I was much younger.

I did this in 1984 but nobody was using carabiners. The advice was to wear a pair of leather gloves and grab onto the cables which is what everyone did. At the top of Half Dome a lightning storm was coming and everyone on top was told to get down quickly since the dome is a natural lightning rod. We practically "ran" down the cable path! I think I got down in about 12 minutes and I clambered down on the outside of the cables because there were so many crowding up the inside! It was basically hanging on with my hands and taking large bounding steps down to the saddle. Loved it and an experience I'll always treasure!
'84 was a long time ago. But your method is preferred by most. And heaven forbid your stuck behind a slow "clipper".
I wish they would make another aisle of cable handrails for going both ways... ascending and descending that way nobody runs into each other. I can't wait to go do this!

My initial reaction was that this guy is crazy. Clipping in and out so often looks very risky. Then the other hikers appeared.
A woman died on this exact trail A-day after I hiked it in 2019.. She had a carabiner and harness but was not clipped in at the time. If you lose your footing which is easy to do you don't stop falling for about a quarter mile. And you pick up speed. Also up there rain and mist can set in on even a Sunny day. That's what happened to her and the granite becomes literally like ice.
Watch Free solo with Alex Honnold! He free climbed El Cap with no ropes or harnesses!! He’d do this shit in a wheelchair!

My Half Dome days are over. But, I did climb it 3 times simply holding onto the cables with both hands and wearing gloves, which were provided. It didn't feel particularly dangerous. Now, there were people who walked outside the cables, holding on with just one hand. That DID look dangerous.
There aren't gloves @ the bottom anymore. Your method sounds proper for 99% of us.
Adam, great video. I did this hike two days ago and my palms are sweating again watching this. Since the hike, I've watched about 10 videos of this climb...yours gives the best perspective on how steep this monster is.

I'm an AVID hiker. I recommend many hikes to many people. This hike, which I did two days ago, I will NEVER recommend to anyone. Perhaps the scariest time of my life. I will not be making a second summit; one and done.

I hiked this in my college days in the 70's, and nobody clipped in in those days. If I went back now, being older and (hopefully) wiser, I definitely would.
When I go hiking with younger people I sometimes wonder whether they even notice that they're on the side of a mountain with 500 meters to fall if they make a wrong step.
Strange how perception is different. I grew up in the mountains, and that looks like an easy Sunday’s walk to me.

Never never go outside, I always read about people who do and ended up worm food. I work in construction and we have to use harnesses even in a lift or ladder. We use double clip or a yo yo and a regular clip

During the summer at Olmsted Point along Tioga Road it is possible to see people going up and down the half dome cables by using either a telescope or a pair of binoculars. From Olmsted Point people going up and down these cables looks like a line of ants on the side of half dome.
I did this climb on a hit of acid. Gnarly day.

Man it felt like I aged 10 years and had spent 3 days climbing half dome. 🤣 I dont think I can put myself through that again, but wow, the colors, the thoughts, the fear, the peace, the challenge of keeping myself together was immense. Good times. Definitely recommend doing it, but set up a alarm on your phone to check yourself and remind yourself of what you are doing. 😁

Jon MacDonald well that is a name I have not heard, I will look into it. All the answers to all the worlds problems are still being processed since my last visit so it’s hard to digest more information lol. I know they sell a research kit for cubensis mushrooms and was thinking that would be fun to do research about the fungi. You can not eat them after growing them though strictly illegal lol. I will look into these critters you spoke of, there are many variety out there. Happy trails.

Smart and wise of you to clip yourself in. Many people suggest that ideally you have 2 clips, but at least 1 clips is so much better than NO clips!! Reckless not to have at least 1 clip in my humble opinion. Thanks for sharing, this is way way way past my comfort zone so I live through you!

Wow that had me nervous watching! I climbed it in 1995 and we didn’t use any safety gear at all. I don’t know what my family was thinking 🤦♀️ hopefully I get to take my kids someday ❤️

It’s not quite as bad as it looks. I’ve done it six times, never with a harness, and often on the outside of the cables because people freeze up and block the space between them. Shoes with good grip are a must, and gloves are helpful.
I saw a man without equipment... I was thinking about that... But if it is your first time better to be careful get some equipment.

It was actually a Black and Decker drill, but yeah. (just kidding...no idea what brand! I wondered the same thing...)
When I was a kid there was a flooded lead mine and you could still get into the ventilation shafts which were cut into the rock above the main mine, so everywhere a vent would have gone down is just a straight drop into the flooded cavern. As a young man we of course spent some time exploring this deathtrap. Someone well before our time had installed some cables and ropes that look a lot like this so you'd be able to hold on when shimmying along the wall to keep from falling in. To this day I'm not really sure how they got these installed, but hats off to em.
@@stephenjones6030 Before power tools. Single jack is what was used. He'd hike up a do a bit more, until one day getting to the top.
The second time I was coming down was in '89 this great big guy had frozen-up about 3/4 of the way down and a crowd was backing up behind him, so we went around on the outside. No one used harness back then, it was pretty wild.
I made a promise to myself, many years ago, that I would make climbing the poles at Half Dome my next goal after accomplishing my current goal. Problem is, I'm absolutely terrified of heights. I've done the Vernal Falls hike more times than I can count, however, there were at least 2 times where I had a major panic attack on the way down, particularly on the last half mile to the falls. Although I'm determined to climb the poles, I'm absolutely terrified of the descent.
Thanks for the video. I am adding the comment below from a frequent mountain climber so that people know that it is also ok NOT to use carabiners (it is not necessarily reckless and may actually be safer for some people):
"If you ask a park ranger in Yosemite, they will tell you that the cables/poles are not built to support the weight of a fall...meaning if a harness is attached and you fall, there's no guarantee that it will do you any good. To add to that, in my opinion, using a harness may actually slow you down, and not in a good way. That being said, park rangers can't stop you from using a harness on the cables. I have hiked Half Dome, and I personally wouldn't recommend using a harness. During my hike, using a harness would have meant hooking and unhooking between each set of poles, and would have kept me standing on the rock longer, tiring out my muscles more...which for me would have made it less safe."
an actual via ferrata set with one-handed auto-locking quick clips is pretty fast getting around posts / bolts once you get the hang of it. Practice at home before-hand as part of the training :)

I did it without clipping in and I didn't think it was that bad. Pretty slippery in some parts and required a good deal of attention, but I never felt in danger of falling off the cliff. I would never walk outside the cables though. Perhaps the scariest part was when I tripped in the col at the bottom after finishing the cables.
But I guess if I had to do it again I would clip in. It was definitely steeper than I expected.

@@TauxWau I've done it three times and never really felt the need of clipping in. This even though the route was pretty packed, and the only thing that slowed me down was waiting for others to pass.
Also though - why in god's name did this guy descend outside the cables? Unnecessarily exposed if you ask me.

Cool video, I think I would have used the second carabiner to hook up on the down side of the post before unhooking on the upside to prevent ever being not hooked in.

You got two quick-draws so you can clip one past the pole before unclipping the one behind the pole. That is the principle of redundancy.

Pricisely, if you slip when unclipped, you're a goner!
That's not what redundancy is. Redundancy would mean to have four carabiners.
Also one is still safer than none. You can just hold on and stay static while moving the one.

I remember going down the cables after climbing the NW Regular route at midnight. Nice being able to relax on an easy descent after a long climb.

ma va I think he is saying this because in the video the guy has 2 carabiners hooked to himself but is only using one. It would be safer to use two so that way you are never unhooked from the cables.

The hike doesn't require or need them. Him having one is safety enough and shows he prepared for it.
Walking down forward facing would seem to be more difficult. I would walk backward...like rappelling. It seems more balanced...like your center of gravity isn't pulling you forward.

I remember that climb. Did it 25yrs ago. Several people ahead of us and they kept stopping making it more difficult, so we went under the cables and climbed up on the outside of the cables. Yeah, it was stupid, but we made it fine and in went up quickly going around all the slow pokes. I’d definitely clip myself in if I ever did it again.
I’ve been to Yosemite twice and wanted to try half dome but once the cables weren’t up yet and the second time I didn’t have enough time, I had the permits but probably would have chicken out anyway, maybe next year I’ll try it

I member back in 98 I did a handstand up half done with a blind fold on. The view was breathtaking...!
Did this with a couple of friends in 1986 when I was 17. No clips/cables. Just wore some of the old gloves people left at the bottom and made it up to the top. We were supposed to do the hike over two days but one person couldn’t get there till the next day so started at noon from the valley and made it back by 8:30 pm. Never had such painful shin splints, could barely walk for two weeks. But it was one of my most memorable hikes.

If safety really came first you wouldn't walk up some rock.
I'd be more afraid of other people w/o harnesses than the actual climb or descent. Also, there are 2 carabiners for a reason. Always have 1 on the wire rope.

I think if you walk parallel to the wire railing it would be much easier. The most difficult way is to face directly downhill.

It doesn't look as steep in the vid as it actually is. It is truly a 45 degree, or 100% grade. Personally I stay inside the cables where the boards are stable. Someone slipped and fell to their death last week.. Right there. Once you get rolling there's no possible way to stop. You can't be too careful.
Of course you can be too careful.
You could bring like eight carabiners, not go at all. Only sit at home in a overpressurized container.
@@MrCmon113 I've been up there numerous times and never did those things. I just took reasonable caution, it is steep.
I actually got caught up top when a storm hit. Absolutely hair raising stuff, literally hair raising with all the static electricity up there. I was able to go down after the storm cleared. It was like ice. So having a rig is a good idea, but not necessary.
