I’m a retired machinist and can agree that aluminum alloys are much better now. The only problem I had ever seen was a problem with hollow points. Myself personally I only wanted one light weight commander so I chose the Ruger the reason being is that it has a titanium feed ramp and the gun is warranted for life so for me that took care of any issues that might come along. New aluminum light weight frames may be more than adequate for long term use but there is zero possibility that aluminum is stronger than titanium and a lifetime warranty is better than a one year warranty on an expensive colt or kimber . I do enjoy your channel and share with your love with the Tisas.

As a retired metallurgist I can tell you the over the last 10-15 years that the types of aluminum alloys that can be put together is insanely better then what they used to be. Several companies that use billet aluminum alloys are the same alloys that are in the aluminum armor that is used in tanks and armored vehicles. Most are not cast because of the potential eclutions so they are forged or machined then tempered. I have a couple of aluminum framed 1911’s and have thousands of rounds through them. There is a little wear but no more than the metal framed ones I have.

I have several aluminum frames 1911's and not afraid to shoot the heck out of them. What damages the frame feed ramp is the magazine follower on older still magazines with split followers - not the bullets...in my experience. The metal magazine follow can jump forward and ping the feed ramp... use Wilson mags or mags with plastic followers and no worries. I generally shoot hollow point ammo that have a bullet style that closely resembles a ball round such as: Silvertip or HydraShok.

Wilson Combat offers many 1911 variants with aluminum frames. There is nothing wrong with aluminum frames.

I would like to think that over the last 70 years or so the improvement in aluminum framed guns is not an issue for the most part. Kind of like the MIM parts. When done correctly, not an issue. When not done correctly, well then there could be some problems. As some of your viewers have already stated, Ruger uses a titanium insert which in my humble opinion is just a nice little bonus. As always Matt good video and yes those grips are sweet!

Ruger does a titanium feed ramp in their aluminum frame 1911's. Others used ramped barrels. I don't know if modern aluminum is hard enough to remain free of galling for an entire service life, but it's a good question. I think the cut out has solved the frame cracking issue by removing the stress point, but again I am not in the industry so, my opinion is not quite two cents worth. Those grips look good, nice shout out. Take care.

I own a defender which was a gift. I can attest to the fact that all rounds beat the hell out of my aluminum feed ramp! I have to take a brass brush and solvent and scrub the dents and dings out of it! The feed ramp should be part of the barrel like on the Dan Wesson specialist. If I was going to buy the Defender with my own money, I would spring for the extra money and get the all stainless eliet defender.

Thinking about this; in the 50s I don’t think they were making engine blocks outta aluminum but that’s a thing now for sure. I’d think it would come down to what type of aluminum as well for today. I’d love to get Kimber to confirm if they are using 7075 or something close. If it is forged 7075 I don’t think there will be any issues, the military uses that to make air frames for our fighter jets…

I have a pro carry 2 i bought used, I had slight deformation on the feed ramp ( rounds unknown) when I got it. I’ve had it for 3 years now , and have 1500 rounds and haven’t seen it get any worse. It one of my carry guns.

I built my 1911a1 on an aluminum Stealth Arms frame and a Remington Rand upper. So far no problem.

Aluminum has absolutely gotten better thru the years. My dad has aluminum boss 429!heads from the the 60s and he sends them out to a specialist to be welded cuz the aluminum is different now

The feed ramps on my aluminum frame pistols are wearing out quite quickly.
I bet even new aluminum frames will have cracks at 40k rounds, just like the old ones do. You cant see them. Need to be X-ray'd. But I bet they will still be there. Just from my own experience working on aircraft and seeing even the newer wonder alloys crack.

I saw some of the same vids. I own an Aviator in 9mm with a Clark/Para ramped barrel. On purpose for this one, I did not buy it in 45 acp due to no metal insert. I own a Les Baer Custom Carry Commanche 45 acp circa 1996 with an Aluminum frame. Something has been done at the feed ramp. I get a magnet to stick. I have to clean it well to barely see what looks like an insert. IDK about urban legends and wives tales. It looks fine and shoots well. If alloy frames today are so bad, why are they made by nearly everyone? Agree that an average shooter will not shoot out the gun in their lifetime. A competitor shooting 1000's of rounds is plausible. Defensive carry is shot at every range session. At least a mag or two. Range guns get the brunt of work load in developing skills. One thing about SDS Imports/Tisas. They are a quality company building a brand. Will they make mistakes? I would be surprised if they didn't. I've used their Customer Service. One word... Excellent.

While I agree with you that modern aluminum has advanced, I’m also reluctant to be the guy to test it to see.

To be honest I've never owned a aluminum framed 1911. Not sure how I feel about it. However I only have one more to get on my list.

I’d run an aluminum frame if it has the ramped barrel. ❤ and I doubt a person could/should polish the feed ramp on an aluminum unit.

The Tisas aluminum frame. It seems you could just cut through that section of the frame rail with a Dremel (I know lol) cut off wheel, then de-bur. Then not worry about the frame cracking. The Tisas 9mm guns all have ramps barrels, so no feed ramp issues with those.

Whats your honest thoughts on aluminum frame 380 1911 pattern micro pistols...ie colt mustang pocketlite....Sig Sauer P238....Springfield 911 380 & 9mm?? Any wear concerns or stories with those?

I think it would be the same and the 45 guns maybe to a lesser extent because I think the recoil spring weight is less.

It might help a little by putting more tension on the thumb safety but it won’t correct it completely. For that you will need a new thumb safety fit. Hope this helps man. 🤠
