I really enjoy you 2 and your reactions. For A Perfect Circle, I would recommend listening to: Judith (many people mistakenly thought this was a Tool song back when it was released on the radio), Orestes, 3 Libras...and so many more.

The track title immediately made me think of Passenger from Deftones. Maybe something you'd dig, too. Who knows. I believe Maynard sings backup on that particular Deftones track, as well.
Another band that Maynard heads up is Puscifer. Must admit I haven't yet given Puscifer a lot of time.
A Perfect Circle tracks to check: The Hollow ( a first track... from their first album), Rose, Judith, Thinking Of You, Gravity. I need to spend some time on their later albums.

From what I understand APC was the brainchild of Tool's guitar tech Billy Howerdell. Billy approached Maynard with some material that Maynard penned some lyrics for and APC was born. This track is from 13th Step their second album. Try the Outsider by these guys or By and Down, both are amazing. There is a lot of great material here, I hope you guys keep digging. Along with Puscifer, APC gives Maynard a whole different creative outlet. Thanks for posting. More Steven Wilson and Maynard, yes please!

Funny how nobody mentionned their last album in the previous comments... ok, "Mer de Noms" is the best album released in 2000 for me... yes, "Thirteen Steps" is close to be as amazing as the previous one, and that was a challenge. But guys, don't miss "Eat the Elephant", their more recent gift to us. This album is... is... is... I cannot find the words to give it justice. A piece of art, for sure. Peace !

I think what you’re trying to say about a more “simplistic” metal..or ”slow” metal, is that it induces almost a trance feel....hypnotic, repetitive rhythm. This is heavily present in North African, Middle Eastern music. For myself, it is my favorite form of rock and metal...I love to lose myself in the trance vibe. YES! You just said Porcupine Tree. Spot On.....Also a bit of Pineapple Thief. Taking it back to the 70’s, that same hypnotic beat and vibe is to be found in, for instance, When The Levee Breaks by Zeppelin....or Bridge of Sighs by Robin Trower. In the sixties, While May Guitar Gently Weeps has that repetitive, slow, hypnotic beat.

Loved your Spot On Insights !!!
For me the Song evokes a
    Deliciously Grungy Darkness.
The Vocals give one a feeling of
    Honest Desperation.
    The guitar and Percussion are
    Perfectly balanced with the singer
    And don't overpower.
    The riffs and flourishes add
Depth to the beautifully morose tone of the song.
    Love and Thanks
    Ken

this whole album was about addiction and destructive patterns, the "13th Step" being a quip arising from the 12 step community in which an addict falls back into old behavior. i think Maynard made a joke in an interview once about the album title, saying that when he was younger, he had fallen off the 13th step and messed himself up. I think he was making a reference to when you're young, narcissistic, and maybe imbibing all these intoxicating substances that reinforce your bad behavior, you just keep repeating the same cycle over and over. It's also commonly thought that a gallows has 13 steps. The 13th trump card of the Tarot is Death. Both Tool and APC seem to be pretty pro-psychedelic in the sense that it can be used for empowerment and self-realization, but also advocating for caution, moderation, etc. Finally, with all this in mind, "The Package" can be seen as networking and using people purely for the sake of getting "the package" e.g. a fix for withdrawals

I LOVE 70's prog, but I never understand with modern prog why they need to mix super-heavy heavy metal in with it. I don't think the two genres go together. And ironically, Rush, who are often dubbed one of the main forefathers of prog metal, weren't really metal (more hard rock) and were light years above this stuff.

This isn’t metal, this IS the hard rock of early 2000s. Generations of music change and evolve. While it may be heavier than Rush’s hard rock of the day, it fits right in with that decade’s hard rock mix.

There are probably better songs from "A Perfect Circle" for example Judith, The Outsider or 3 Libras...I also love The Doomed from the new album. More Yes please. People will tell you to do Close To The Edge, but being a Yes fan since the 80's, I believe that if you want to listen to a 20 minute song, Gates Of Delirium is much better than Close To The Edge. If you want to hear progressive Yes taken to it's most chaotic and clashing, Close to the Edge is the way to go, but Gates of Delirium has a better melody, I think. Even better, do the whole album (Relayer)...it only has three songs, and all three are so different, and so awesome. For a shorter foray into the Yes sound, I suggest And You And I, which I think it Yes' most beautiful song. Also, someday you should check out Leave It, which prominently features their vocal skills.
