Baby Seals rescued from Hook and Fishing Net

Fishing hooks and illegal gill nets inflict massive pain on our seals when they get accidentally caught in it. This morning (20 June 2020), Naude and Antoine from Ocean Conservation Namibia were finally able to go on seal patrol again after massive sand storms (Namibian East Weather) made it impossible for a few days to do their job. Seals were calm and relaxed, chilling on the beach, and Naude and Tony were able to free a total of 8 seals from different types of entanglement.
Two rescues stood out - the first one was a baby seal caught in a big ball of gill net. As in many other countries, gill net is illegal because of the huge amount of by-catch such as turtles, dolphins and seals. We had a few recent rescues with this type of net, it seems there is an illegal operation going on in Namibia.
The second seal did not only have a massive hook stuck in his tongue and jaw, he was also dragging a long piece of fishing line behind. We had seen him before, but only today were we able to get our hands on him. It was a painful and graphic rescue. He is left behind with a tiny hole in his skin and jaw, but the salt water should help him heal quickly. He is finally able to go and hunt for fish again. 🦭
