    DM'ing for a table of 7, and they got derailed for over 40 minutes debating whether to keep a little demon imp as a pet or kill it, finally 1 guy got so fed up he killed it and said "there it's over, we can do the actual story now instead of whatever that was" and everyone joked "Zos got so mad he broke the 4th wall"

      My group of 4 once had a discussion over 30 minutes if it is more sensible to eat the last ration as dinner and skip breakfast or the other way around. Stuff like that happened so often that I thought my group rather wanted to play a grindy survival game or a logistics firm simulation.

      @@joelmi16yeah this is just free prep time. I can kind of just tune them out, let them have their fun and make the next area have a bit more polished. Honestly I'm tired of doing all the work as a DM. I'm not a professional circus clown, entertaining 4 children is not my full time job. When they do entertain themselves for 30+ minutes, it means I get a break from playing babysitter and honestly that's welcome.

    On the topic of self insert characters - The characters we make in TTRPG are inherently molded by who we are as people. Who we aspire to be and character arcs that we wish to play out will always be based in the lives we've lived in our real world. That's what's so beautiful about TTRPG, I couldn't imagine faulting a player for their OC being too close to who they actually are.

    When the quiet observer came up, it took me back to a memorable moment in my group years ago:
    We had a silent player at the table and were on the group‘s early game (probably level 2 or 3) when I introduced the BBEG - the group was in the middle of some
    underground ruins and just finished an indiana jones style delve when they were cornered and clearly outmatched. The BBEG explained to them that he will let them go if they turn over this plot device. All the other players picked up on the fact that this was a fight they can’t win and got ready to hand over the item when out of nowhere someone spoke with in-character voice: „Now listen up you piece of shit!“
    In shock everyone turned to the silent player. They had up to this point only reacted (as in acting on their turn in combat and following the group) and never shown initiative, let alone spoken in character.
    After an initial moment of shock and silence, we all agreed that: „welp, hope we weasel our way out of this without everyone getting wiped.“, had a laugh and played on. But everyone at the table has fond memories of that session. (Needless to say I didn’t let anyone die because our silent player engaged in role play for the first time with that group)

    never before have i agreed more with dnd hot takes, i just watched all 3 parts and it feels really nice to finally have someone talk about this. The amount of times ive seen people preach about how sandbox is the only way dnd should be played and how "if you have even the slightest amount of rails your players will feel it and become murderhobos" has to have taken at least 5 years off my life span. LINEAR ≠ RAILROAD

    The meme of an OC is a self-insert Sonic or My Little Pony character. But you’re right, most of it is just an artist’s character that they do continuity illustrations or a comic about.
    .
    The real defining thing is probably the Joss Whedon/Scott Pilgrim-style introduction/personality/likes-dislikes caption.

    i feel like the whole “shopping sessions vs. regular sessions” and just having heavy RP or combat comes down to communication. if the DM wants to run game based 90% on RP should communicate that before the game starts and players should communicate what they want from a story or game. there’s nothing wrong with finding a new group simply because you don’t wanna run the same type of game

    • @LunamrathP
      @LunamrathP 9 днів тому +3

      Agreed. My last 2 sessions were all RP, no combat. My players loved it. It was also of a nature that pushed the story forward in big ways.

    The spectators can give DMs secret anxiety, "is this person having fun for real or just hanging out??" If a significant amount of time passes where they haven't engaged, i check on them, "does Tibexius have any thoughts or anything to add to this situation?" Most of the time, it's a "no, not right now, just listening and considering the things that have been said." Me: "hmmmmkaaay..." As long as they aren't playing games in another monitor or something, i usually take this at face value. But it does make me nervous sometimes

    • @KHfanz
      @KHfanz 7 днів тому +1

      Honestly the spectator players have normally been non issue players for me, once I actually calmed down about them not being in the spotlight. They normally are very quick to take their turn, or make their decisions too which is a plus. They’re just, VERY quiet most of the time.
      If you ever get a chance to play with a spectator in person it’s a much less anxious situation, since you can actually SEE that they’re engaged and listening, just not talking.

    16:42 some of the best moments I’ve had in dnd have been when some small rules were messed with for the fun of the table. Getting worked up about “the beholder would suffocate” is crazy. Especially when it was undead (like Zach said). It’s also just a fun thing that happens at all tables. Almost like it’s a main rule of the game. “Rule of cool” or whatever the DM allows. Getting mad at that in a short is crazy because that just means at that table in that short it was a cool thing that they were allowed to do. (Not that anyone needs my permission for anything but) I’m all for it!

Whats your take on other genres of TTRPGS that dont focus on "power fantasy" as the underlying basis? Our friend group has really been enjoying Delta Green, a horror TTRPG that's like X-Files. Combat is terrifying, and the stakes are high. It makes for great roleplay and dread at fights being initiated.

    A satisfying narrative solution to stun/banish etc is that, following human reasoning, those effects and spells are annoying. The same way they're annoying to us they're annoying to the adventurers and wizards (etcc...) within the setting. Thus, items that weaken those effects are common. Small consumable bracelets that can resist effects of teleportation magic with a reaction, or a ring that can give you advantage against stun condition. These are very common and easy to come across, especially for adventurers and the likes. But you can imagine like a merchant going through a dangerous rout, they'll often be wearing some of these protective magic items.
    Mechanically they usually end up being mostly fodder because I don't use those types of spells and effects much. My thought process is- if there are common and cheap ways to trivialize those effects, most people wouldn't put in effort to learn those spells. But it makes it feel "likely and reasonable" when the bandit boss easily resists stun. I just smile and go "yeah and you can resist it easily as well!"
    Fun for the whole family

    18:30 As Zac mentioned I don't think this is a huge problem. But if they're just shy and don't feel comfortable roleplaying (yet) then I think you patiently lobe them softball opportunities to jump into a little bit more RPing and if there's a moment you see them go beyond their comfort level then given them heroic inspiration or some incentive to encourage them. I think in time with positive reinforcement PCs who aren't comfortable would warm up to RPing.

    Yo zach, i run a campaign with 5 players and i wanted to say i love your videos!!
    In the past you've talked about despising pvp in your games and i think if your creative about it it can be fun. The way i handle pvp urges with my players since a lot of them like the idea of seeing whos the highest damage dealer in the party, is that whenever people have free time after a session, we will set up a non canon arena where we can have pvp matches that dont count towards in game story progression in any way. And you can even extend the idea by allowing players to have an npcs sheet for an enemy they fought in the past, and letting them have a sidekick in the fight, allowing for really creative match ups. I know pvp isnt for every dm but i think thats a fun way to handle it :)

    All my favorite characters have always been OC's from my own stories that I've altered and modified to fit the game and setting.
    It basically just gives me a complex backstory with a buncha things for a DM to pull on while giving me a developed basis for a character to shape into the plot.

  • @LOTHMT
    @LOTHMT 8 днів тому +1

    14:20 Yeah no youre right, OCs most of the time arent self inserts but rather just characters the person puts together with aspects they like or find unique in general.
    Thats why a lot of artists have many OCs (which they kinda also abandon after a while) simply becaue of everlasting changes in preferences to draw as well as include in stories etc.
    MOST bigger artists will keep 1 OC for image purposes but then change their art slightly to focus on others and see if they can be the next big image if the crowds very positive towards their design

    I appreciate the "it's just a joke, lighten up, the logistics don't matter" mentality. However, I think it's also important to sympathize that the people who complain about the small logistical details are kinda saying "you are so close, I wish you were all the way there, here are the ways in which I think you came up short". Like, it's easy to find comedy that is consistent with the rules of the real world. However, consider the DnD movie with its crazy budget that still made lore accuracy sacrifices in favor of the story and spectacle (I really enjoyed the movie fwiw). Is it really so bad that some people want lore accurate comedy? Comedy that respects the rules of the world and game they care so much about? Some people feel that internal inconsistency cheapens a story/plot, takes them out of it; makes sense to me that that would extend to comedy. (Fwiw I loved that skit so much it was the first one of yours that I showed to my SO)

      To clarify, I'm not advocating for any change in your creative process nor content, I'm just saying, let the people grieve. If they want to air their grievances over what could have been in UA-cam or wherever comments, I say let em! It's your content, it is totally ok for it to not meet their hopes and expectations

    OC’s are just characters people make basically, they can be a character they thought just looked good with no lore or a character with no art but millions of pages of backstory. All that really keeps them as an OC is not having a specific media they’re connected to, like a story or comic or something, because once they do they become a part of that media.

    To be honest I have never heard any of the things you are complaining about, eg. cutscenes, railroading, someone screaming metagaming at me, etc. Really enjoying the videos, obviously, and the energy is great, I just hadn't realised how lucky I must have been!

    From a previous podcast you mentioned acid splash on locks. I would find it hard to believe that expensive lock makers wouldn't include a sacrificial anode in their lock. It's not infinite, but logicaly any artisen making locks would be aware of acid cantrips like lock picks in their fantasy word.

    I was about to say, does this guy cuss at all? CUSSING ISN'T GOOD! But some words build emphasis, and some make us laugh, they're often used in anger, frustration, or pain. But I was like... dang, this guy rarely cusses, which is great. Good on ya! XD
