I dont know how or why but combat rolls and Arcana checks are the only things i feel safe on rolling. Insight check with divination wizard, lucky feat, bountiful luck, and the Halfling Lucky race feature will net me like a 13 at best lol

It would be really nice if the friends of the casual dude that takes a long time in combat would make a few notecard cheat sheets to have in front of him as reminders of how sneak attack or whatever works in the game. I really love the way Zack reacted to this and I agree that jaut because this dude isnt a sweatlord for DnD, it doesnt make him a bad person

I still play the EXP system because I feel like if you go 2-3 sessions with no after game report, you don't feel too accomplished and your goal for leveling up is still miles away. But if you have a physical tracker when it's about to happen, you can mentally prepare for what you're gonna do or be able to be ready for it so you can hammer it out. I had player who was like 200xp away from level, we knock out a few baddies, she leveled up mid game but because she knew what she was after, her level up was like 10 minutes and did it while we were playing because it didn't interrupt anything. If you do milestone leveling, they sit there and wonder when that level up is happening, waiting to hear you say it and yeah it's a cool surprise when you do but... in the meantime it feels like no progress is happening to that goal

1. I agree that stunned should never be used on a player! However for a player? Go for it! Stunned my bugbear or beholder or whatever 2. I think xp has its place, such as in a dungeon crawl style game or a west march’s game, but any regular style home game? Naw milestones all the way 3. I don’t really mind a dm NPC (not a dm pc) where there character has a full character sheet and assists the players but never makes and big decisions and always appears less then the players, Matt colville has a great video on this where he talks about his dm NPC being portrayed without confidence and when asked what to do he simply says “idk I just heal people and try not to die” kinda thing, I think that’s nice because you can then fill a simple roll without forcing the party to have to pick a certain class because there scared of being weak without a healer or tank

xp is just not a good system for D&D. Just let your players level up when it feels narratologically appropriate and satisfying. Works much better for RP heavy groups as well and you might actually see some play above lvl 10 without having to play the same campaign for literal years.

You need to get to know the spectator. I DM at the local store and some people are very shy and the more they play the more they open up. I have one player who comes every week she barely follows the story, for her this is a time to get out with people, three years ago her husband died in an accident and this is her one day she joins other people.
