Mark Knopfler has an incredible curiosity about people. His biographical and lyrical songs reach across time to bring them into our spheres. He isn't just an entertainer. He is a teacher that we don't realize is educating. We learn as we enjoy his musical genius.
Well, didn’t Mark work as an English teacher at one point (as well as a journalist), before he focused on a career in music full time? In that case, Mark using his musical gifts and his love for storytelling, to teach us a thing or two makes sense. He is surely a favourite, when it comes to music, simply like his style of guitar playing and his outlook on songwriting. I don’t like the idea of putting “stars” on a pedestal, I think think Mark does NOT come across as your typical “celebrity”. I’m glad about that, he seems to simply be himself. Good on him.
I’ve always said that his songs are little history lessons. I’ve learned so much about the UK and other places from him, googling places like Spanish City and Dog Leap Stairway and terms like Border Reiver. What other rock musician writes with such variety and depth? He’s such an incredible poet and lyricist, as well as musician.
Not only Mark but Al Stewart too. Most of Al's songs are about some aspect of history or related characters. Both of these men are great teachers and their lyrics music are just beyond anything otherwise related. You enjoy the music and the learning too. Thanks to both of them.
I taught my daughters history taking them to school each morning listening to one Mark Knopfler song or another. We loved this album and the story of the Mason-Dixon line! I was so happy to have been able to see him in concert a while back...a truly great experience!
Mark Knopfler is a treasure of our time . This piece of work set mark in another level he's written so many great song but " Sailing to Philadelphia " is truly a musical masterpiece .
Back in 2001 when Mark toured the world to promote Sailing to Philadelphia, I got to talk to him after one of his shows in where else but Philadelphia. We were outside the Tower Theater and it was drizzling. We didn't care. At the end he signed my program with a black marker and told me to be careful not to "smoodge" it.
I have noticed as the years have passed that Mark has become more reflective and is a man/guitarist with a whole lot of soul. Cripes, I hardly recognize him anymore without the red Strat and the cowboy shirt and headband. You could walk right by him in a guitar shop and not even know it was him, .....until he started playing! Those MTV days are long gone...but Mark is still here. He looks like your everyday older gentleman about the neighborhood. Just your every day guy.
Mark is not the usual rock musician type at all. He's not the typical documentary chap, either. He is a rocking documentarist who's been around, performed in front of 30000 people and still speaks like a decent human being.
He certainly is a very fine person.. Even at 71 years of age....I can hardly wait till I can receive my vaccine n live to see Mark in concert again. That is my wish..
What a guy Mark Knopfler is, such talent and so humble. I could listen to him all day. Going to see him in Manchester in May. I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas. Thank you so much Mark for being who you are.
Thank you Mark, this was a remarkable piece! Bless your Heart and Soul for investigating the history of Mason and Dixon! Saw you with, Dire Straits, at the Commodore Ball Room in Vancouver B.C. in 1981. Fabulous night! 💕🎸🎶💃
Mark's a complete encyclopedia... a Poetry Essay... a Historical treatise and more about whatever one may think about!!!!.... I wonder how an Artist can embrace such a huge culture and deal with in so much love like him.... love you dear Idol!... 💎🎸💎
Exactly right - a beautiful poem, a remarkable ballad spanning the north and south of England and reaching west to America, folk history, a stunning melody, harmony and chord progression, all woven together to give us a masterpiece.
Mark your incredible, the knowledge you posses with in,first your music, second, humanity, and all life's equations, you sir are paying attention, congrats.!!!
Sailing to Philadelphia is one of the finest, elegant and most beautiful song that I have ever heard and Mark Knopfler is one the best and complite songwriter, if not the best. His songs are full of elements and inspirations biographical, historical, geographical, social, cultural, literary and lexical. He is a true poet, divulger and storyteller. Immense talent.
Its amazing as you still see remnants of Knopfler's old journalism days in the way he reports on this masterpiece. His commentary on how they "fade away to obscurity" and "the line epitomizes the split between north and south" , These are phrases you read in a magazine.

For anyone interested in the Mason &Dixon story, there is a wonderful novel by Thomas Pynchon (called 'Mason&Dixon), one of the best books ever written in my opinion. Definitely worth a read, eloquent and wonderfully imaginative like all of Pynchons work and filled with extraordinary characters. A poignantly beautiful story.
I always had the feeling of being there with Mason and Dixon when listening to that song. The lyrics of "Sailing to Philadelphia" just take me on a journey.
I always felt there was way more meaning in this song than just a great lyric, thanks for posting, geniuses from the past remembered by a genius tom today....wow

Such a beautiful song. Heard it through my father who was a big fan of Dire Straits and Mark. I stole this albums that has song on it, and is has since been one of my favorite songs of all time. It brings back so many good memories growing up as a kid, and through this song is where I learned of the Mason Dixon line. Incredible song and historical figures indeed
And the thing is: it could be done. One of the things I've always found fascinating about Knopfler, maybe due to him being a journalist, is that most of his songs seem to tell a story.
This is such a poignant video and thank you Mark Knopfler for capturing the whole story with such a beautifully composed song. You truly are a Local Hero!!
I first heard this song performed live with James Taylor and Mark Knopfler... Wow! What show! My 19th James Taylor show!Mark was not mentioned on the playbill, and was brought out as a guest... Blown Away! Now? I'm a multi-instrumentalist, and a year into guitar, I'm playing this song... 😊
I'm familiar with the song and the history, but was pleasantly surprised to see a former co-worker of mine featured in the video. Great job, Todd Babcock. I know how much sweat and effort you put into finding and preserving the markers along the Mason-Dixon line. Hope you're doing well.
I heard this beautiful song for the first time today on Amazon music. I knew Mark Knopfler from Dier Straits fame and was excitedly surprised that he has done solo work. The song got me thinking about Mason and Dixion and the difficult job they were hired to perform, which lead me here. Beautiful story song, done in Mark’s genital and mystic way of singing and playing the guitar. Brother in Arms is the same; a haunting story song is sung just as well.
When I was a child my grandparents converted the Quaker chapel to a house where Jeremih Dixon rests. This video has just triggered memories that have come flooding back.
Really good to hear what inspired the song that tells so much of these 2 men in 4 short verses. A fantastic song with no wasted words and so beautiful.
This is why he’s my idol, Mark. He may not be the best guitarist, the best singer, the best songwriter, or the best lyricist, but all his music capabilities put together with his humble and sweet character. He is such an inspiration to me.

In my opinion he is certainly Hendrix material but Mark is even on a different level than Hendrix or Clapton or even some of the classical guitarists, he's deeper, and he understands history and it's importance to study, like Telegraph Road, the Mason Dixon line etc. Mark if a "coin dealer" would be a Numismatist. and I would be honored to call him a fellow numismatist or coin weanie ha! Mark is just great raconteur who put things in very interesting words. I love to listen to him not only as sings but also when he tells the stories. I could listen to him by countless hours.
Everyone gets to leave their mark on the world. Just not musically all of the time. There are other great ways to do great things. Just everyday, ordinary people. We are all part of the whole. Mark just happens to be the very best guitar player that ever held a guitar. Completely unmatched by anyone.
Left UK some time ago to live in rural Alabama. Everyone here knows the mason Dixon line but not a lot know of the person Dixon. I enjoy telling them. Southern people are so great to talk to.

Thank you, hajepe2010 for posting... and thank you, Mark Knopfler for your song that will keep alive the story of two local Heroes, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon. I learned about their sacrifice a difficult task, as they set out to divide Pennsylvania and Maryland. I enjoyed your song as I watched the interesting documentary...
Wow. The story I had imagined listening to this song did not have an army of 100+ men. :) Mark Knopfler made the whole affair so romantic! One of my all time favorites and I don't have many.
I think someone might have mentioned the book Mason & Dixon by Thomas Pynchon (one of my favourite books) - I'd be surprised if Mark Knopfler hadn't read it before writing this song and been at least partly inspired by it. Really a very imaginative account of their lives, and moving - particularly of the end of their lives I thought. Also one of my favourite songs by Mark Knopfler - I have 5 different versions of it on my computer, because I love all of them!
@@paulaisomura4894 A collaboration of two geniuses - Pynchon and Knopfler - telling the story of another two geniuses. Seriously, one of my favorite books and one of my favorite songs.

Many thanks to hajepe2010 for posting this segment! I read about it on Mark Knopfler's website, but not being in the UK I couldn't watch it on the BBC website. I love this little documentary! I smiled at the two "local hero" quips and at the way the biographical and historical facts were tied together by the song lyrics. ...But I have to admit: seeing how old Mark Knopfler looks now breaks my adoring, admiring heart. I wish he could be exempted from aging. I don't want to consider a time when there will be no new music from Mark Knopfler.
One of my favourite pieces of Knofler music, been a fan since Dire Straits appeared in Bridlington where I live many years ago. found this by chance, what a brilliant piece of journalism. Real local heroes!
I truly appreciate this incredible documentary. One of my favorite songs of all time made better with the back story of its creation. Mark’s artistry not only tells the story, but makes us feel the hope and dreams of a new land. Even today the Mason Dixon line carries a more emotional response rather than a simple geographic demarcation. Thank you for posting this.
And now I know a lot about Mason, Dixon, The West Country, Durham, Northumbria, The Angel of the North, Geordies, the coaly Tyne, Newcastle (that you don’t carry coal to), how to sail to Philadelphia (up the Delaware River), exactly where the Mason-Dixon Line is and why it had to be established and marked. It’s a great song, too.
Beautiful, thanks for posting! My other favorite history lessons, in Rock Songs are: 1849 - Lighthouse Acadian Driftwood - The Band Monster - Steppenwolf Enjoy!
This is a great song. I listen to it most every day. It's pretty interesting to hear the story. We all (in the states) hear about the Mason Dixon line, but I doubt many know much about how it came about. Thanks!
Once again I’m proud to be a Knopfler fan.
