We Need to Talk About LaMelo Ball.

  • LaMelo Ball has been the latest player to be labeled as "empty stats", due in large part to the shortcomings of the Charlotte Hornets organization. The truth is a lot more complicated though, because when LaMelo Ball was fully healthy during the 2021-22 season, he helped them achieve an above .500 record and they made the play-in tournament.
Despite being compared to players like Tyrese Haliburton and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, LaMelo Ball is truly his own player. The Hornets have a long way to go before they're a truly competitive, but with LaMelo operating as the primary facilitator and offensive engine, they have a lot more to work with than a lot of teams in the NBA.

As a Hornets fan I love seeing the potential within our squad both offensively and on defense. LaMelo alongside Miller and Bridges is the offense we needed and having Mark Williams on the floor being such a beast on defensive boards and all that i see needed is a better backcourt defense in LaMelo, Hayward picks that up pretty well though as well.

Really great analysis here about Melo's efficiency as a finisher --- I haven't heard anyone note the difficulty of finishing as the creator compared to getting assisted finishes at the rim. I still feel lile Melo needs to attack defenders lead foot on drives a bit more with euro-finishes or moves off two feet. But Melo has so much in his bag --- as a Charlotte fan he's been really exciting this year. Brandon Miller had been excellent so far and I think will continue to win starting minutes --- Charlotte's future is bright if you ask me.

I think the main eye test point to be made with melo is the creativity and spark he brings is contagious. He speaks a language with his play that only him and his teammates are fluent in on the court. it brings the best out of them and has to be difficult to get your finger on the pulse of as a defender. To me his and Haliburton are two very similar players in the sense that they both bring so much that doesn’t show up on a stat sheet. Far from padders. Always bring the best out of their teammates

I like that you use terms like "floor raiser" to differentiate the type of impact players have on teams. In my opinion, that is key to having a nuanced discussion on these topics rather than people talking about "empty stats" or accusing players of "stat padding" (ok, Ricky Davis might want a word with me). I believe that what people often really mean when they talk about things like empty stats is the idea that a player is more of a floor raiser than a ceiling raiser, and that while they are effective on lower quality teams, their style of play doesn't translate next to other quality players. I think that Allen Iverson is maybe the best example of this in my lifetime. And this is a credit to AI; he took a team to the finals being (not quite literally) the sole offensive force driving the way. However, his style was not adaptable to playing next to other talented players (or rather he never learned to tweak his style to fit next to others).
To me, that is what LaMelo still has to prove. I don't think his stats are empty. He scores, facilitates, and is such a singular offensive force that your team can only be *so* bad when he's out there, because his gravity and will alone will bend a defense. But does that hold up next to other players who need the basketball? Can he play effectively off-ball as well? Will his defense improve enough to where he is a clear-cut net-positive? The answer can definitely be "yes" to all of these questions, but you see in players like James Harden that just having the talent to fit around others, to play off-ball, to buy in defensively, doesn't mean that they will.
All that said, I think that it is clear that LaMelo is a talented floor raiser whose talents are yet to be proven as a ceiling raiser. He is certainly an exciting talent, but we won't know the answer until Charlotte puts a legitimate NBA product on the court around him or moves him somewhere that will.

The narrative that he is not a winning player is insane. I am very critical of LaMelo when warranted but I have never understood why it is said that he is not a winning player. I get you see the flashy passes and see the deep 3s and then look at our record and be like these are "empty stats". But when you play with some of the lineups LaMelo has had, it's not easy. The one year he had a decent team around him and everyone played their role, the team went 43-39. LaMelo wants to win. You can tell by the way he has approached this season and has improved on so much just from last year despite missing most of it because of injury. It's up to Charlotte to continue putting good players around him. We aren't as far away as we think from at least a 6 seed but there are still some things that need to be addressed before I am comfortable calling us a real playoff team. But this is the closest we've been in years.

his finishing efficiency stats are skewed at this point. everyone who watches the hornets knows that at this point lamelo even has a great touch around the rim, but genuinely gets fucked over by the refs often to the point that when he feels contact he passes it out instead of shooting it cuz at this point he doesnt even expect the refs to call anything for him. People need to wake up on the current meta of NBA basketball. This is no longer the early 2000s where a single player can carry an entire franchise. It takes 2-3 stars and a solid supporting cast to even guarantee escaping play-ins. Even if we had Lebron drafted this year in place of wemby the spurs wouldn't be a playoff team all of a sudden. Sure magic, MJ, lebron and a lot of historic players changed franchises over night, but back then like 40% of the league could barely even play basketball in comparison to today. Now garbage time guys are coming on the court with a decent bag, a jumper and a strong ability to run the court.
People just love to think "well in the 80/90/2000s so and so was unstopable and added 30 wins to their team in the first 2 years!". it was only possible because the skill floor of the NBA was way way lower and team basketball was still developing.

if Lamelo's reputation is empty stats due to his team not winning then can we say the same to Lillard and all those superstars from shit teams that doesnt win a chip?

Charlotte is trash and they are wasting Melo’s talent. He is definitely playing like an all-star. Your analysis was really good. I’d say his development is on par with other young players. So much of his game and habits grew out of being the smallest guy on the court. He’s grown into his body and thus has more control. At Chino he’d pick up that dribble mid key and hit the floater because guys were up to a foot taller and he’d have no shot at the rim. Also, I’ve noticed he’s playing with his natural left hand more. Some of his movements before seemed like he was uncomfortable or uncertain with when to switch because he was made to play with his non dominant hand.
