Any criticism or advice I could give would be so pale. But to non-musicians, playing that as well as he did after not having done it for so long is a) par far any great musician and b) absolutely brilliant. The fact that he almost never stopped even with wrong notes is something you need to do in performance. If it's a rehearsal, you can always go back and fix it, but in performance the show must go on. I know I couldn't do it. Three cheers, sir!
Ciao Paul, i live in Peia, i'm 33 years old and i sing with the chorus of S.Antonio da Padova di Peia. Wonderful music, top organ and my church❤.. thank you to play! Federica
WOW Beautiful cathedral and organ. Your registration and playing made the cathedral sound fabulous. I really enjoy your tour of churches. All have been very interesting.
This video just makes me grin from ear to ear. I love it! It also makes me realize that even the best musicians make mistakes, even you. I learned that it is ok to make a mistake. I play bari sax in a jazz band (24 years now) and when I mess up, I feel very inadequate. But I keep pushing on and marking my music and practicing. I can't tell you how much I enjoy this type of video! Thank you again!!
Love ya, Paul! You are the shining light this retired organist has been waiting for. I never learned the Toccata, but I've enjoyed playing the other movements. I think the first movement is the gem. Thank you for all your efforts to bring solid performance practice and organ building to the public. It would be a pleasure to hear you in live performance. May you enjoy a gorgeous life and a most successful career.
Ein bißchen Mut zu improvisieren muß man schon haben! Sehr schön gespielt, Herr Fey; and besten Dank.
Mr. Fey, I learned so much from this video. No, I don't play organ (well, I have played, a very long time ago). But there is a human element that the audience often forgets. Showing the parts that need work and confusion makes it more real. No one is perfect. And when learning to do something (I am fighting to relearn piano after years of not playing...and with a rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis). If you keep at it, you get to the end. Thank you so much for sharing, you continue to inspire me!
I have been waiting for you to do this! After hearing your improve of O Come all Ye Faithful based off of this, i was like, When is he gonna play Widors Tocatta!
Well done! Your registration of the piece sounds so good! Now I just want to sit in this beautiful cathedral and listen to this wonderful music! Thank you so much!
Hello Paul, I loved your performance today. Widor's Tocatta and Fugue is an amazing piece. Bravo Maestro and thank you for your wonderful gift of music. God Bless. 🎹🎼🎶🎵🎶
Dear Paul, Bravo, bravo!!! For having not played that for years, that was wonderful! You obviously have very good facility in those fingers! Playing tracker organs and having a good piano technique keeps the endurance up!! I absolutely love that piece. When you arranged “o, Come all ye Faithful” with that widor toccata I was elated! I didn’t have the nerve to play it last year! Hopefully, this year!! I love your transparency. Thank you, my friend!! ❤ Royden
Hadn't played in years? Never would have guessed. I think you played a tough piece beautifully. Bravo. Well Done. Enjoyed it immensely, the church is gorgeous, love the sound of that amazing instrument. Lovely. Now have played the video three times.
This piece is just like a brilliant burst of sunshine. Love it. There was one occasion when I was playing it. When I rehearsed, it was fine. For the actual occasion, when I came to the end where you cross your hands, I suddenly found that I couldn't reach, (I'd opted to go onto the swell for the left) because I'd buttoned my jacket :) Fortunately, everyone was out of the church by that point. There's always something..
Such a great sound and a truly moving piece for me. This was my parents wedding music and has always touched me since losing my father. Thank you for sharing this performance sir.
Dear Paul, I found this little treasure online, maestro. I can't believe how brilliant you are; I am totally mesmerized. Love and respect Richard USA New York
This piece brings me back to my years of study at Westminster Choir College. I would hear the organ performance majors and church music majors with organ principals practicing the Widor amongst other things on the many organs on campus. Glad you rediscovered this excellent and uplifting piece. And thanks for the memory.
One of the most intelligent readings of this piece I have ever heard. Most important thing is that you do not try to play it as fast as possible, you let the music "breathe" and let the listener take it all in. Your tempo closely matches that at which Charles Marie Widor himself recorded it. I didn't realize there was a portion of it that required cross handed technique! My pastor requested I play this for Christmas about two days prior! I could not obtain the full sheet music that quickly, only the first page and a couple UA-cam reels. Had to fake it like you did! You did a wonderful job, I wish I could read as well as you do so I could learn the whole thing. I am primarily a theater and rock organist.
Listened to Diane Bish play this and I just had to listen to more performances of this, and wow, you just knocked it out of the park!! I am very much new to the realm of organ music. My teacher is an organist and I just dream about having even a spec of the talent you possess. Been trying for a while to play Boëllmann’s toccata and so far it’s been great! Lots of love from Bulgaria ❤️❤️
Wonderful musician and bright fellow. However his wrists are very tight thus reducing the clarity of his playing. He can remedy that by practicing piano, with a dose of some technical exercises and études. The piano keyboard has the depth and resistance the will allow your technique to improve when executed properly. My organist colleagues told me when they were in music school their professors told them never to stop playing piano. How I would love to have this boy as a student! ♥️
Relax your whole body when you play it. Relax between every note / chord. Lift your fingers off the keys and strike them rather than pressing them (oops! - but a great concert pianist told me to do that and it really works for preventing tension build up). It feels wonderful when you get it right. You can play it all day with no cramping/fatigue/tendon issues! 😃
Forever will She reign in the hearts and minds of people around the world as their own Queen although they may not be her actual subject. She will always and forever be my one and only Queen.
Thank you for your ego-less posting, Paul. It's not an easy piece for a practiced person to perform. All things considered, I believe you deserve a Bravo for this one!
Hallo, lieber Paul.
Wonderful - my dream is to be able to play this. We had it at our wedding (long before my organ journey had properly started), and I'd love to be able to recreate it at home. But there's a long way to go yet......
So9 wonderful to here this kind of music written by the masters .. Nothing will ever out do the pipe organ .. My hat off to you ,even with you saying you should practice more . Wasn't able to full fill mastering the organ , but God granted me a singing voice ..
Nice of you to do that for Andrea. Is he studying the organ? You had a fun trip with good weather. (As for playing Widor on a French organ, aim for St. Sulpice). From Chicago, U.S.A.
Hi Mr. Paul Fey! How many years have you been an organist and can you tell me about your wonderful journey at the music academy??? You are the best: Paul Fey and Richard Mc Veigh
Thank you so much!! 😀 Where are you from? I usually was very successful asking at local churches if they would let me play or teach me to play the organ! 😀
@@PaulFey I have tried asking, but not even a slight chance in big cities... the main drawback I have is the lack of a pedalboard, if someone has any knowledge of a good one that wouldn't bankrupt a 9th grader I would be very thankful! 😉
Paul, An excellent musician is ALWAYS his own biggest critique. And YES- when you accidentally forget the music- IMPROVISE. REGARDLESS- NOT an easy Toccata to play with the alternating arpeggio's particularly at the end and MOST enjoyed! In all frankness- that's a LOT of stops on that organ for II / P! Regards, Nigel from canada
Dear Paul, you are a wonderfully authentic human being who does the world of organs and organists an enormous service. THANK YOU for what you do! Marc
Oh, thank you so much, Marc!! 😀

You made that organ sing wonderfully!! Made my eyes tear, fantastic 👍👍👍👍👍
Paul, one of my favorite organ pieces. The registration you used was just what Widor must have had in mind when he composed it. BRAVO!!
This video just makes me grin from ear to ear. I love it! It also makes me realize that even the best musicians make mistakes, even you. I learned that it is ok to make a mistake. Love the behind the scene look showing how challenging this piece is to play. IMO, the greatest organ piece ever written.
Widor wrote a lot more pieces that are even more thrilling. Enjoy the buffet!
A Majestic piece in a Majestic setting, beautifully executed!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Well done! Your registration of the piece sounds so good! Now I just want to sit in this beautiful cathedral and listen to this wonderful music! Thank you so much!
Just awesome!!!! The cross over of the hands is TALENT! Thank you from sharing🎉
Die herrliche Toccata zu hören, während man die wunderschöne Kirche bestaunt, ein ganz ganz tolles Video 👍🏼👏🏼😊

My Dad played this piece often. He turns 90 this November and doesn't play anymore, but thank you so much for reminding me of one of his favorites!
This is no song
WOW
The recessional piece at my wedding!

Wonderful playing of a tough tough showpiece. Thank you! (BTW, who built that amazing organ?)
