Yeah really! This young man is how old?? I’d say maybe 20yr old, so this good music is probably considered really old music to him. Really if it’s not something his parents listened to then I can understand the lack of exposure to the entire genres of 60s-early 80s rock. I mean hell, he just needs more exposure to some of the really good older rock and he’d probably really enjoy most of it.

“Paint It Black” is a dedication to the writer’s girlfriend who died. Everything happy in his heart is gone and he wants the rest of the world to feel his pain.
This song came out in 1965 so it was during the drug and counterculture period, which partly explains why it’s hard for younger modern listeners to understand.
The Rolling Stones are legendary. They formed in the early 60s and still tour today. They’ve released nearly 50 albums, 37 of which hit the Billboard Top 10. I don’t know the exact number of songs released but they have 20-something Top 10s.
Have you heard the song “Moved Like Jagger” by Maroon 5? That is about the Rolling Stones lead singer, Mick Jagger. He still prances around the stage like a teenager even though he’ll be 78 this year.

I like the story Keith Richards tells about how the band got its name. Some guy was acting as the promoter for the band and was trying to get them gigs. He called a club about them doing a show, and was asked what is the name of the band. He looked down at a magazine lying on the table that had Muddy Waters on the cover. Below the picture was the caption "A Rolling Stone." It must have been about 10 years ago that I watched the video, so don't get excited if I messed up one or two details.

The reason that song sounds so familiar is because since its release in 1966 it's been used in multiple films, video games, and tv shows (both finished product, and trailers). Most notably the end credits of Full Metal Jacket and Devil's Advocate, the video games Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Mafia III, and (most recently) the hit HBO series Westworld.
The Rolling Stones have been around a long time now, and are still touring. For another taste of their music give 'Sympathy For The Devil' a try. Longer than Paint it Black, it is one of their more famous songs along with Satisfaction and Start Me Up.

The majority of critics voted this song as the greatest rock song of all time. It is a legendary hook that intro. Also if you haven't seen Full Metal Jacket I recommend you watch that film. Painted Black is the intro to that movie.

This song marked one of the major turning points in Rock n Roll. It came out just as the 60's generation was coming of age and didn't connect to campy songs from the Beatles, Monkeys, or even Elvis. People wanted to express the raw part of life. The Stones, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, etc... gave that generation a way to scream about their condition the same way Pearl Jam and Nirvana gave teens a voice in the 90s. Glad you enjoyed the song.

In 2015, White Room's guitar solo got ranked 2nd place for "best guitar solo that uses a wah pedal", with the #1 being Hendrix's Voodoo Child (Slight Return), so you KNOW that guitar solo is going to be pure fire! Yes, this song is about grief. Back in the 60s the Beatles and the Stones dabbled with a lot of different sounds. You might be picking up on the instrument called a Sitar. It is more used in India. So, perhaps that's what you were catching. Your next Rolling Stones should absolutely be Gimme Shelter and Sympathy for the Devil..there are two lyric videos for those songs and they are also really cool. The Stones sound varies quite a bit from song to song, so you can react to lots of different songs of theirs and be as stumped as you were with this as far as genre. 😬
