Today we’re talking about one of my favorite topics: poop. And we’re finding out that the most important time to pay attention to our poop and what it can tell us about the microbiome is in the earliest months of life. I recently did a really interesting webinar on this topic. It's such a critical aspect of creating lifelong health that I wanted to share it on the podcast, to make sure anyone who missed it had a chance to listen. With the huge rise in inflammatory diseases from obesity and diabetes to autoimmunity and so many more, it’s imperative we look at the gut to optimize whole body health-this is a fundamental piece of Functional Medicine that I’ve been using with my patients for decades.
To dig into the specifics of how we can start kids off with the best health possible, I sat down with Dr. Tracy Shafizadeh. She is leading the work in understanding the infant microbiome, as a nutritional scientist who helps new and expectant moms learn about creating healthy gut bugs in their babies. Dr. Tracy translates her extensive scientific knowledge of breastmilk and the gut microbiome into practical terms to help parents understand how a balanced gut from infancy leads to a healthy immune system and metabolism for life. Dr. Shafizadeh received her PhD in nutritional biology from the University of California, Davis, and spends her free time "loving the guts" out of her two boys.

Dr. Hyman, may I suggest having more informative video thumbnails like you used to before? Now every video seems like it's the same as the one before, they're very vague and doesn't give the audience an idea of who you're interviewing or what topic is being discussed. Plus, if I go into your video library to look for a specific topic, I would have to click on every video and read the video description to even know what is being discussed. Not a great system if you're trying to inform and help people. I used to watch so many more videos when I could see what was being discussed from the thumbnail but now it's way easier for me to just scroll over it... Hope this helps!

So thankful I had my son vaginally. It was via the clamps lol but then I also breast fed him for a year. My friend had a c section and then formula fed her son. He has chronic gut issues and has to go to the childrens hospital often. The drs have had him on a laxative forever! I'm like that cant be good. Edit so when my baby was born they asked for his 1st meal if I wanted to give him formula or donated breast milk I chose the donor milk.

It's in all canned foods, canned tuna, packaged chicken, packaged ground meats, packaged fish, all chips, marinades, dressings, barbecue sauces, all fast food even fries, dog and cat food. The glutamates from msg trigger your nervous system then deplete serotonin levels in GI tract. Might cause diahhrea then constipation. Food stalls in the intestine which cause bacteria to consume and flourish in the gutt. Immune system is then triggered which then cause inflammation all over the body. Can lead to an immune disease and cancer if the chronic inflammation continues. Took me a really long time to figure this out. 12 to 15 yrs my friend.

Two questions come up to me listening to this:
    - would fresh, raw animal milk (eg goat milk) be an alternative that is closer to the composition of human milk than formula? It is usually the go to alternative in developing countries, other than having your baby fed by another woman.
    - is there any way to reverse this dramatic development as an adult or are we just doomed?

  • @LB-nb5tq

Very interesting indeed. Not denying what science is showing might be true. But my first baby was born by c-section because he couldn’t get down the birth canal after being two weeks overdue. I was on antibiotics because of step B and I couldn’t breastfeed him after because I wasn’t producing enough milk in my opinion, and was in such pain recovering that I got scared he wasn’t getting enough food. I decided priority was the peace of mind knowing he was fed. By your scientific studies he should have all the symptoms of terrible gut health. My boy is 1 now, and hasn’t ONCE been sick nor did he have any of the symptoms she mentioned would be the case. Mommas don’t despair. I give glory to God because when us humans can’t get everything perfectly right, which he knew we wouldn’t, God can intervene if we trust His promises. From the moment I knew I was pregnant I have prayed over his health and will continue to along with giving him the healthiest nutrition our family can afford.

Take a look at dr William Davis work on repopulating the gut using homemade ‘yoghurt’ which you grow specific strains of bacteria in, you then eat the yoghurt and breast feed the baby or feed it straight to baby if it’s eating solids. Also look at the GAPS diet for weaning, v anti inflammatory and gut healing - most babies eat way too many grains and this exacerbates the eczema etc.

I think it's parasites are the root cause for inflammatory in the body and brings on dis....eases in the body. An infection of too much parasites and parasites When a patient visits a doctor, many doctors never never check for root cause. If a new born and growing child suffers from allergies and have gut health issues parasites, bacteria were passed on from mother to child that's causing health problems in young child and growing into an adult. My question is. Why pets get worm out every couple of months and gets medications for worms infection in heart and doctors do not prescribes this for humans? It's always other testing and not gut testing and addressing the root cause. Being a vegetarian or going vegan wouldn't protect one from bacteria and parasites. Our bodies needs a purge to keep us healthy just as pets do. Excercises and a strong person does not prevent one from becoming infected and sick.
