  • University of Tennessee Emeritus Professor and Distinguished Professor of Science Dr. Jan Simek gave a fascinating presentation to NACC attendees regarding cave inscriptions of the Cherokee syllabary found in Manitou Cave in Fort Payne, or "Wills Town", as it was known to the Cherokee nation.
Dr. Simek served as Head of the Anthropology Department at UT. From 2009 to 2011, he served as the 24th President of the university and was named President Emeritus by the Board of Trustees. He has published over 100 scholarly works, with a great deal of focus on the caves of France, as well as those of the Cumberland Plateau and the Appalachian Mountains.
In 2015 Dr. Simek said of Manitou, “The cave is an incredible place, and we will learn more and more as time goes on. The cave is a very important place from the point of view of Cherokee history and culture."
We hope you enjoy the lecture! For more information regarding this event please contact Blake Wilhelm at wilhelmb@nacc.edu or 256-638-4418, ext. 2288.
