The no takebacks rule makes a lot of sense, since Yu-Gi-Oh allows interrupting plays. Making a move and then taking it back gives you information about the opponent's traps.
No takebacks makes sense in general in a competitive environment. If I'm focusing and trying to play at 100% capacity, I expect my opponent to do the same. If you think that's harsh, consider that in chess, if you just touch a piece, you are obligated to move the piece you touched. And once you take your hand off the piece, that's it, that's where the piece stays.
We had a local (fairly good) player lose to a random Magic Cylinder in an otherwise unremarkable deck once, and his reaction was hilarious. He started ranting about how bad the card was, and that his opponent shouldn't be playing it. The thing is, Magic Cylinder is a very all or nothing card, when it's at its best it's awesome, but most of the time it's unimpressive. Anyone can win with Cylinder now and then, but it doesn't win consistently.
I'd like to say something regarding point 2. If players are able to see the backs of their cards in light coloured sleeves, then maybe Konami should consider updating their rules so that players MUST use opaque sleeves like it is in Vanguard and Pokemon.
Pre-Jordan Basketball fan Basically, you call kaiba Corp and they’ll handle the rest. They only need some information on your non game element credit card.
I think the intoxication rule is also because although the player may be having fun under the influence. It might not necessarily be fun for someone else who feels uncomfortable around such a thing or in some cases threatened by it. As intoxication for a lot of things goes hand in hand with abusive or unconventional behaviour. Wether it be something minor like being loud, or something major like being verbally abusive.
Also, just wanted to drop a tip for local tournaments, where you aren't required to provide a deck list: don't make changes to your deck mid-tournament at locals. I've seen a lot of kids get in trouble for doing that. It is usually younger kids, like 12 or 13 year olds, but some people just don't go to locals until later and do it because they assume it's not a very formal tournament and it doesn't matter. But, I have seen store owners get on people's case about it. I've seen people get disqualified, I've seen people get off with a warning, and I've even seen someone get banned from competing at that store because they did this multiple times. So, if this is you and you haven't gotten caught doing it yet, you should probably stop doing that before you do.
Coming from playing magic i cant believe that you cant double sleeve cards. Ive never been to a mtg tournament without my deck doublesleeved. People are going to be handling 100's of dollars of cards when they cut my deck or when they look at a card to read it, and you have no idea where their hands have been. Not to mention the benefit of having a seal inside of your outer layer of sleeve in the rare chance that something spills. Perfect fit sleeves + an outer sleeve is essential for keeping cards clean. It also makes 60 card decks a ton easier the shuffle because the cards become wider.
in the case of double sleeving, if you have one sleeve with art or an opaque back and you want to cover it with a 2nd completely transparent sleeve for extra protection i really dont see how thats an issue. with two opaque sleeves yeah you could hide a card in between, but if the 2nd outer sleeve is completely transparent by all means it should be fine imo
The rulebook says, that you can place your cards wherever you want, as lng as both players can fully see the state of the field at any point... But it has to be on the table thou... But you could actually be allowed to place a duel disk on the table and use it as a playmat...
@@heidtb6746 hmm... but in a duel disk the spell/trap zone is like inserted into it, so even if the backline cards were flipped face up theyd still be half inserted into the disk. do you think that counts as not being able to fully see the state of the field?
in the anime, field spells were inserted in a slot on the end of the d-disk (so definitely would be obscured) but im not sure if real duel disks have this function... also i believe extra deck cards were simply kept underneath the players decks. as for no extra deck zones you can attribute that to konami not releasing new duel disks for years, but yeah you wouldnt be able to use them in the current meta regardless of tournament legality
you can have an OCG card and pull out a translating a simple comma can lead to a miss timed thing. not just a typo in the translation a simple example is overtex coalts in the OCG doesn't use the word "when" it uses "while" if you translated it but from context you understand the word means "when" its like telling the difference between the sentences i have read a book and i will read both words spelled the same but the pronunciation is different. Anyways that difference in wording with regards to overtex coalts would mean you can activate it gy effect off twin twisters when you in fact cannot Unless you wanna see ultimate conductor tyranno nuke your board it makes sense why OCG cards are not allowed.
@@ketsura3618 We can, but that's primarily for things like Europe-wide tournaments where the player caliber is a lot higher. I personally wouldn't use foreign cards at the local or casual level in general because people tend to be dumb, petty, or just young and it would cause too many issues.
I personally always Double Sleeve my cards when im not at locals or any other tournament, the humidity kills foil cards and there is no worse feeling than seeing your 95$ Infinite Impermanence suddenly have a huge Arch in it. So for me personally I just simply take the 2nd sleeve off before the tournament starts and then either once its over or I drop from the tournament in the case of bigger events I put the 2nd sleeve back on. its more of an issue of combating warping than it is for protecting sleeves in my case.
It mostly do to- a person could say they Double Sleeved all of their Cards ( thus a judge who noticed the cards look a bit to thick will just think it have a extra sleeve)...But the person could have only Double Sleeved most of His/Her cards an left their Combo/FTA cards Singled Sleeved as a away to Meda Game...or Could had slide another card into to so they can " Change Up The Deck Between Rounds"
Double sleeving should be allowed for those of us that wish to protect our cards from the asshat across from us slamming Redbulls and Monsters. Wait until Mr. Asshat spills his energy drink all over your cards and ruins them because they're not double sleeved.
The only time that would help, is if you "Double Sleeve" the card from Top to bottom (one sleeve placed on the usual way and the other going the other way)...However they do make Sleeves with a water proof hood or you can tap off the top.
Watching your videos have taught me a lot. I haven't gone to a locals since Pendulums (cause f*** that noise) but I've gotten very nostalgic and now I want to go back with my new deck. Wish me luck!
This reminds me of my first ever Yugioh tournament, we were at the end of the day and my opponent was so high he literally tried duelling the guy NEXT to him instead of me and then complained to the judge that I was cheating as I had "exchanged bodies". Needless to say he was thrown out as apparently that was not the first time he had been reprimanded for this.
I currently play MTG myself, used to collect YGO cards, I dont have much interest in playing it, but these videos are just so interesting. Small quirks about anything and displayed in this way are just something. Top job, lad.
That depends on the credit card you’re using. In order to answer this I need to know the name on the card, the number on the front, the expiration date, and the three digits on the back
You forgot the rule that if a player skips over a non-optional effect and it isn’t corrected before the gamestate becomes irreversible, they get a game loss. If the player, however, *intentionally* doesn’t remind his or her opponent of a mandatory effect that could drastically change the gamestate, that can be considered cheating via rule sharking and can get you Match losses. If both players fail to catch the error, then the turn player can recieve a game loss. However, if the player in question catches the effect and his opponent refuses to let him or her resolve it provided the gamestate is reversible, that can result in said opponent recieving a game loss. In short, always remember your mandatory effects and be courteous and do the right thing by reminding your opponent of mandatory effects.
Helping my opponent with their mandatory effects? That's a terrible idea. It's not my job to help my opponent play the game better; that's what practice is for. Do I also have to correct them before they make suboptimal plays too?
For the "tap" thing, it probably refers to how a lot of players, who choose not to cut when offered a cut, will tap the top of the offered deck with one or two fingers to indicate they won't cut. Any motion involving touching the deck in some way without actually cutting any cards seems to come across just fine, just most people choose to "tap." There's also the actual in-game Magic the Gathering term "tap," which, to simplify somewhat heavily, refers to turning cards that remain on the field sideways when they've been used since your last turn. Creatures (monsters), for example, tap when they attack.
He shows the Pokémon card his channel pic is taken from, but the Spheal is reversed in the real art. A dumb joke admittedly but I'm not taking it back lol.
That makes no sense. Magic has allowed double sleeving since inner sleeves have existed, and it's never been an issue. And Magic has way bigger prizes and a bigger competitive following.
I remember wondering about the double sleeving rule too (they had the same rule at a DBS tournament) What I was told was that with double sleeving, someone could put a piece of paper or something small into the sleeves to help with stacking the deck, so I guess in ygo it would be similar to the OCG card rules?
Even though I’m rather strictly a casual player, I have to say, I love your videos. It’s interesting to hear things from a competitive point of view. It makes me realize that I have no idea how to play Yugioh competitively. ^^; But I like hearing and learning all this neat stuff. :) I’ll be over here with my casual hodge podge deck if anyone needs me XD
2:00 How about those cards that say 'cannot be used in a duel'? I think the egyptian god promo cards (at least the coloured backs of them) from the legendary collection 1 make for some really good tokens. Am i allowed to have them in my deck box dzeeff?
As per the Konami official tournament policy v 2.1, you CAN double sleeve your cards with some stipulations such as the 2nd sleeve being clear on both sides, being placed in the opposite direction than the 1st sleeve, and, of course, only 1 card can be in the 2 sleeves. This has been the case since November 2020.
@@hutaocleookitavoidshiki1470 No. 1) 4Kids has nothing to do with the card game. 2) The Yu-Gi-Oh! original anime, manga, and card game are all also aimed at a child audience. Nothing Yu-Gi-Oh! has ever been aimed at adults.

7:21 Yes, tap is a MTG term, but it reffers to placing a card from Vertical to horizontal. The "Deck Tap" here i think comes from Pegasus just taping it's opponents deck with 1 or 2 fingers instead of cutting, I think it's from episode 35 (vs Yugi) or 26(vs Kaiba), I really can't remember which one.
Question tangential to the OCG TCG thing (non yugioh player here, MTG player who played yugioh as a kid). Why are clear sleeves and white sleeves allowed? In magic, even with the backs of all cards identical, you have to use sleeves, and opaque ones at that, because you can still mark the backs of your cards or see signs of wear to tip you off to the top of your deck. Wouldn't it make more sense following the line of logic for banning OCG cards to instead ban clear sleeves instead?
About not being able to take back plays, in Konami's tournament policy it says that actions cannot be taken back once a player has committed to them, so the way interpret that isn't always if it's the last move, but generally if you do something and then haven't done much else but within a few seconds you realize another option, I let my opponent take it back. I'm extremely lenient on that kind of thing even when it's like, for example, my opponent forgets to search off of one of their gouki. Granted, that's locals. You're supposed to be getting better with your deck in order to be a better duelist. At a tournament if that happened I would probably let somebody take back a summon like if they normal Candina and then realize they had hornet drones in hand or something and want to take it back, I would let them redo that, if they summoned Unicorn but decided they shouldn't, I would let them redo that, but if they summoned timegazer off of chronograph and forgot to use Darkwurm, I wouldn't let that happen because that's a lot more of an obvious thing that they need to remember on their own to activate. Just my two cents. Also just as a question, in Battle Step all cards are activated both in response to the attack and in response to the previous effect, so if I attack with, say, DDD Cursed King Seigfried, and my opponent activates storming, I negate it, can they now activate another storming? It would be chain link 3 in response to the attack and Seigfried's effect, so I'm not sure. I would ask the more experienced judges at my locals but I don't go until this weekend.
Thing with taking plays back is it’s not always trying to shark your opponent. This isn’t normal summon a vanilla monster anymore. Now we have so many quick effects or on summon effects. Sometimes those on summon effects are not optional, so there might come a situation where your opponent knows too much and use that information to their advantage.
Dzeef so regarding what your saying on card thickness difference between OCG and TCG, there has been many different cardstocks used in TCG alone. Also that sleeve thing can be classified as a marked card/sleeve to a different extent. So let me ask you this: If I used fully opaque sleeves and mixed OCG cards with TCG cards, would you be able to cut to OCG cards in particular? If the answer is no, then OCG cards should be allowed. I’m not saying that I’ll go do so as current rules say otherwise but nonetheless I see no reason for OCG cards to be banned in TCG and vice versa. Personally I see it more as a different forced economy as at one time toadally awesome was 2$ in OCG and 60$ in the TCG
Bushiroad allows double sleeving at all of their card game tournaments, with some even getting allowed triple sleeves, so I feel like Konami is needlessly overcautious here.
So I went for - I’ma use- I begin flipping over a Trap -wait maybe not... and was called on by my friend (this was a casual match btw) for ‘take backs’. While I did declare an action, I never actually fulfilled it, listed card names etc. He didn’t respond either. I don’t really think that was a take-back, but I guess it was sort of one? Dunno man. The trap was Draw Discharge in response to some Cyber Dragon shenanigans. Don’t remember what card effect he used.
About taking back plays, I go with one mindset: If I mess up a play it's my fault, I won't expect my oponent to let me take it back, I won't even ask to do it. So, if they ask do to it I will always say no. Learn from the mistake and next time do it the right way.
Fun fact, I let my opponents take back plays. Mostly because I don't want to win because of a misplay my opponent did. I want to win because my deck overpowered theirs and my skills surpassed theirs. I want to win because I outplay them. Not because they messed up.
Do you HAVE to use konamii sleeves and mats at official event? Ex: I have dragon shield sleeves for my main deck and my extra deck i have vanguard sleeves. As for the mat I have a MTG mat.
No you can not. Even if it has "cant be used.." because its a Yugioh card. Its the same reason why you cant have normal Yugioh cards as tokens or field centers. You can only if you mark it on the card. It does not help if you mark it on the sleeves. Hope it helped you :)
You can’t for the reason stated above. Anything that can be mistaken for a game piece that isn’t listed on your Deck List but is in your Deck Box not marked explicity as a Token *on the card itself*, is fair game, even if it explicitly says it can’t be used. And to list something like that on your Deck List would likely raise some serious eyebrows at the Judges’ Table. TL;DR, if it’s a YGO card (even one that says it can’t be used in a duel) that is in your Deck Box but not on your Deck List, it can get you game losses. And if you put a card with the “cannot be used in a duel” text on your Deck List, that too is not allowed, as you are technically using that card to play in your deck regardless of whether or not it shows on the field or in your hand. So no, you cannot, under any circumstances, have a card with the “cannot be used in a duel” text on it in your Deck Box during an official event unless the card itself is explicitly marked as a Token.
"[...]under the influence of any substance" is some pretty shitty wording, considering caffeine and nicotine probably won't bother anyone. What about medication like adderall or anti-depressants? medical marihuana?
Medication is fine, not marijuana. Caffeine is okay but you cant bring most drinks to the table. You usually can't smoke it a public building anyway, doesn't mean you can't have it in your system. So long as you don't inhibit or disrupt other players.
@@TJminty there are places where medical marijuana is legal. It helps people who have cancer or other afflictions. I don't think there are many people that have been prescribed it that play yugioh but still.
@@TJminty The problem is that, the way it's currently worded, it doesn't differenciate whatsoever. So, according to the official rulebook, I can't enter any Konami official tournaments because I'm on medication. The fact that they don't really try too hard to enforce it shows it's a stupid rule IMO.
Dzeeff, Your analysis on TCG / OCG cards is giving Konami way too much credit. The ONLY reason is to profit maximise from the western market. They tried the 'you can't use US cards' in Europe when they released European print cards (to try to force people to re-buy cards they already owned) and players soundly rejected the practise so Konami/UDE backed down. You are not wrong in saying there could be confusion/cheating but that's not the reason they don't allow foreign cards.
Sorry, but do you work for Konami? No? Then you have literally no idea why they don't. We also have no idea why Konami might have insisted that players couldn't use US cards in Europe at first, but the fact that they backed down on that issue but have not backed down re: OCG cards is evidence that there might be more to it than just "lol Konami wants us to spend money." You don't have any definitive evidence and therefore you cannot say what is right or wrong.
@@CoordinatorKYamato The reason they backed down is because every event that tried to enforce the greed fuelled rules were seeing less turn out that events that ignored the rules and with no community or player support Konami's hand was forced. Because that's what it sounds like, and that is absurd. Finally, I'm not being an apologist, I'm fully willing to accuse Konami of greedy tactics when it's appropriate, but this time it sounds a lot like whiny players crying and being resentful about having to buy cards like the rest of the player base and using "Konami's greed" as a lazy excuse to justify themselves. The reason that dzeeff gave for the OCG card ban is much more believable than the baseless garbage you're spewing.

You just draw 4 cards, place 3 cards from your hand onto the table face down, and then place your deck on top of the stack. It is not that complicated. Sort of like Desires, you just stack 10 off the top of your deck face down, ask your opponent "response" and then add 2 cards to your hand face down or put your deck down.

@@Lightn0x So chess does allow limited tackebacks.

You also cannot expect to win with Magic Cylinder at a tournament either.

Can I use a duel disk in a tourney? XD

Real answer: no. The spell and trap zones are obscured, there is no space for field spells or extra deck cards, and there are no extra monster zones.
in the anime, field spells were inserted in a slot on the end of the d-disk (so definitely would be obscured) but im not sure if real duel disks have this function... also i believe extra deck cards were simply kept underneath the players decks. as for no extra deck zones you can attribute that to konami not releasing new duel disks for years, but yeah you wouldnt be able to use them in the current meta regardless of tournament legality
I found the ‘no drugs’ rule more reasonable than the ‘no OCG cards’ rule.

you can have an OCG card and pull out a translating a simple comma can lead to a miss timed thing. not just a typo in the translation a simple example is overtex coalts in the OCG doesn't use the word "when" it uses "while" if you translated it but from context you understand the word means "when" its like telling the difference between the sentences i have read a book and i will read both words spelled the same but the pronunciation is different. Anyways that difference in wording with regards to overtex coalts would mean you can activate it gy effect off twin twisters when you in fact cannot Unless you wanna see ultimate conductor tyranno nuke your board it makes sense why OCG cards are not allowed.
Some Yu-Gi-Oh! players can barely read English. Bringing foreign cards is just asking for trouble.
@@CoordinatorKYamato But we can use german, french cards, the only thing those cards have in common in english is the same alpabeth.

More like ruling is dumb not even konami gets it.
Double sleeving seems very common in Japan or at least that Kingdom jp YT channel

Any motion involving touching the deck in some way without actually cutting any cards seems to come across just fine, just most people choose to "tap."
There's also the actual in-game Magic the Gathering term "tap," which, to simplify somewhat heavily, refers to turning cards that remain on the field sideways when they've been used since your last turn. Creatures (monsters), for example, tap when they attack.

As per the Konami official tournament policy v 2.1, you CAN double sleeve your cards with some stipulations such as the 2nd sleeve being clear on both sides, being placed in the opposite direction than the 1st sleeve, and, of course, only 1 card can be in the 2 sleeves.
Dang can't Blaze it before a Tournament lol

On the off chance you haven't already learned the answer since you posted, yes, they can activate another one.
Do I really have to let my opponent shuffle my deck? I had a raigeki bent because of my opponents aggressive shuffling

@@ToastyMoldyPopTarts no, you can shuffle your own deck. All you have to do is offer your opponent to cut your deck afterward.
@@619waters Officially your opponent has to shuffle, not cut. Cutting only happens if you cut it after the shuffle.
I would just ask a judge on that one and see if you could get them to act as a neutral party to shuffle your deck.
I have double-sleeved before; never gotten a game loss, but I did get a warning once.
6. Wash your hands before you duel cause noone wants to have your cheesy hands touching their hands for the cut.
Can you do a video about avoiding getting sharked?
Dzeef so regarding what your saying on card thickness difference between OCG and TCG, there has been many different cardstocks used in TCG alone. Also that sleeve thing can be classified as a marked card/sleeve to a different extent. So let me ask you this:
If I used fully opaque sleeves and mixed OCG cards with TCG cards, would you be able to cut to OCG cards in particular?

@@bluefable3416oof not going to damage a 17 pound card
@@the_cat_sandwich just mark the sleeve it's in.

So if the problem with OCG cards is that you can differenciate them from TCGs, then I guess there's no problem in playing a deck filled with OCG cards only ;)
Akwarklank thinkin smart
Okay but if OCG cards are all in japanese, sometimes with different card art, your opponents are likely to consistently argue your translation and then bring a judge over so your duels are gonna draaaaaag
Except the rule isn't "You can't use OCG cards, unless you think of a way around it." The rule is "you can't use OCG cards." Period.
@@neferacronia6798 1. You can't use OCG cards in the TCG no matter the situation
2. If you play a foreign card you must be able to present a readable copy to your opponent at said tournament.
One of my friends lost a game against a guy playing a full German Sky Striker deck that did not have extra copies of his extra deck in English (this took place in Arizona and no one at the event spoke German.) The Sky Striker player was doing other shady crap so we should have sharked him but we missed the chance when we decided to do it.

i think we should be allowed to use clear sleeves as outer sleeve when double sleeving
😆Are you allowed to challenge the Higher Ups to a card game for VIP rights?!
I have a question about being “under the influence”.
I for example have A.D.D and i feel like i have to take Ritalin to major events and to anyone who doesn’t know it’s considered as a drug. So my question is if i take it and a judge catches me taking a pill can he disqualify me for taking a prescription drug?
no he cannot as long as you have a bottle with the prescription.
Thanks
