We had the same problem in britain after ww2.. loads of highly skilled but often not very employable explosive.. experts.. safecrackers and suchlike.. thing was.. most of them were easily caught.. after all the military keeps records of every specialist it trains and can easily narrow down the suspects to a manageable list for law enforcement..

Lots of Cash In Transit robberies in western Sydney were down to more the fact 1st and 2nd Commando Regiments and SOER are based there over it just being a shit part of Australia. The problem is the guys doing it weren't the smart ones getting snapped up for big money jobs in the mines etc.

The AK's were untraceable since they brought them back from overseas... you could say they were battlefield seizures. I was a Ranger at the time and knew people who knew these guys. Apparently the movie Heat was a huge inspiration. After this happened.. they started searching all Rangers before we came home so that no one had AK's or any other contraband. Everyone was talking about it.
Officers joked that these guys had the tactical skill to perform the robbery flawlessly but failed miserably with the planning part that officers typically specialize in.

Looks like 5813 S. Tacoma Way is now a Car Gurus location, but you can see the same yellow with brown roof and chimney (with church steeple in the background) when you Google the address today. Looks like they demolished the building and built a totally new building - likely not due to the robbery, just corp downsizing on BofA's part.

Imagine if a group of like 5-10 Delta or DEVGRU guys tried this. Probably would never be caught. They wouldn’t make such a sloppy mistake. If they got into a firefight with the cops then you better be praying for the cops cause they will need it.

If you are already SF/SOF Ranger school is more so of an option, Larry Vickers who is a tier 1 operator he was told that he needed to go to Ranger school but the minute he went they were like nah man your good. Ranger school is a leadership school but it’s a great gateway to open up the doors for SF/SOF, but if you are already one it’s more so of personal preference and a choice.

They did all that for $54 000 divided four ways? That's stupid. If you risk going to jail for armed robbery, you might as well make a hell lot more money than the money you could make working legally for the same period as the sentence. What a dumbo...

The reason they may have took the AK's on the job, is because, if they had to let a (warning) round off, they would be able to dispose of the guns without great cost. They may have had to dump all the guns and equipment anyway, because it is evidence they wouldnt want to be connected to. Why take an expensive tactical military type rifle on a criminal job, if you have got to throw them away after anyway? I know nothing about the price of fire arms, but I know the AK47 is one of the most manufactured automatic rifles ever made, so I guess they are pretty cheap too? They may have even have been replicas, and that was all they could have got at the time. I've read about a few American armed robbers (Larry Lawton for one) who only ever took an imitation fire arm on an armed robbery. In the eyes of the American judicial system, a fake firearm and a real firearm being used in a crime (if you get caught), could be the difference between a 10 year sentence and a life sentence.

In 1999 there was a series of bank robberies here in Sweden, made by a gang of neo nazis. One of them was currently serving a prison sentence, but did the robberies while on unguarded leave, and returned to prison after the robberies. Yes, really. And it gets weirder, he got the leaves to work as an actor in a play directed by the famous Swedish director Lars Norén. You can't make these things up. Anyway, the nazis knew they needed someone with military experience, and combat experience, so they recruited a fellow former prisoner to be the trigger man during the robberies. He was like made for the job, he had served with a ranger unit in the north of Sweden (K4 in Arvidsjaur), he had served with the French Foreign legion, and he had served as a mercenary in Bosnia, committing war crimes there. That's why he had done prison time. He was the one with the expertise, the nazis themselves were more like ordinary thugs. None of them seemed to think that it was odd that nazis and white supremacists would recruit a black man to provide the expertise they lacked! Yes, he was black! Adopted from Liberia! Totally insane, but true.
