  • Massey Harris introduced their first four wheel drive tractor in 1930 and production continued until 1936. The tractor has a Hercules 3.7 liter, 4-cylinder gasoline engine which can do 15 horsepower on the drawbar. About 3,000 of these tractors were built and would have cost you $1,000 US Dollars in the 1930’s or about $14,500 in 2018 US Dollars. Rob Sample of Pennsylvania shares his passion for Massey Harris Tractors and the story of his four wheel drive Massey Harris GP. My grandfather bought one new. He died in '79 and we sold it the following summer to a collector in Kansas. Grandpa had the original sales invoice that went with it. The y originally had lugged steel wheels. There were a couple of articles I think in Successful Farming over the years about the collector who purchased it. I remember the one article had a picture of part of his collection in a row and the GP was at the front of the line.

    Our neighbors had one of these tractors. He used it until the mid 1960's. When he passed away, his sons traded it off on another tractor. Unfortunately the M F dealer had a shop fire and the tractor was in it.

    I wish you would look up Garry Wilson of North Lunenburg, Ontario Canada. He has a large Massey Harris collection including 1 if not 2 GPs. Plus he has made smaller scale (drivable) versions with implements. Great vid. I enjoyed seeing a GP under it’s own power again. Cheers

    Is the tractor fully retired or does it pull a trailer or plow once in a awhile?

    • @pappysmf8117
      @pappysmf8117 3 роки тому +5

      Jacob, it’s had a easy life since my grandfather bought it in pieces back in the late 70’s. It pulls floats in parades now and then but no longer works for his living. I do have a Pulverator Plow for it but have never sunk it in the dirt. To be honest, I am afraid to break anything.

      @@pappysmf8117 I understand. With a rare tractor like that it must be hard to get spare parts. My father told me though that for old tractors the best thing to keep them in good working order is to run and use them. We use tractors from the 40s and 50s on our tree farm and they do all the work. So that is why i asked if the tractor was retired or not because I am so used to seeing old iron still working to some extent.

    • @pappysmf8117
      @pappysmf8117 3 роки тому +4

      @@jacobramsey7624 There is a pretty good group of guys around the country that have some spare tractors around for parts but I would rather not risk it. The plow is a different story. There are only four of them known to exist in the world. My second passion is the old Ford N series tractors. I would run one of those all day long if I could!
