Cold Start Massey Harris 30 and Thoughts About 12v Conversions

  • The early 1950's Massey Harris has been sitting a few months and needs to be moved. It is in line for a freshening up of the ignition and electrical circuit, but time has not allowed. A machine with higher priority needs repaired first so today we just do a cold start on the old Massey. At the same time we have a basic discussion about the old tractor and the upgrades electrically that its in store for.
    This old tractor on occasion would fail to start with the ballast resistor in the circuit. BUT...that was always with a partially charged battery. Now a battery charged to 12 or 12.3 volts will spin the starter, but with a ballast resistor, there's not enough of a shot of voltage available to fire across the plugs with the resistor cutting the voltage to the coil. Lowering the coil input also lowers the coil output. The result is a weak or poor spark and failed ignition of the air/atomized fuel mixture entering the cylinder. A simple bypass of the resistor would usually cause it to fire up instantly. That is going to be repaired, just not now.
    The second thing to change in the electrical circuit is to change the ammeter to a voltmeter. No, it's not just as simple as removing the wires from one gauge and install them on the other gauge. An ammeter must be connected in 'series' of the load, causing all the load to pass through the ammeter resulting in a movement of the needle... Now, the voltmeter needs to be installed in parallel with the applied voltage. If it is connected in series with the circuit loads, it will be come a load and divide the electricity in the circuit by half. If its a large load, the high amperage will overburden the workings of the voltmeter and render it useless. The good thing about a voltmeter is you can see the condition of the battery the instant the key is turned on. A partially charged battery will show correspondingly low voltage. THEN....when the alternator or generator becomes energized and produces output voltage back into the battery, you will instantly SEE the increased voltage on the voltmeter. No guessing if its charging or not, the answer is easily visible. To illustrate the points, if you feel like it, take a few minutes and follow through this diagram for a '72 2000 Ford : • Delco 3 Wire Alternato...
    Near the end of the video I am met with a bit of a surprise...you'll have to watch to see....I can't tell ya everything man !! LOL #coldstartmasseyharris30, #continentalF162flathead, #whyavoltmeter

    That 30 starts just like my 8N (has the 12v conversion). Bulletproof and reliable tractors, and a few more HP on the Massey. I like the draft control on the 8N, and it's been in the family since my wife's grandfather bought it new in 1951. Has always been a reliable old iron family member. (Similar to my Gravely 4-wheelers)

    • @tractorman4461

      These old things were rarely fitted well with three point systems. There were aftermarket ones made by Saginaw and Danuser, but they lacked the actual 'Ferguson System' design of throwing the draft created by the implements onto the rear wheels to aid in traction. The Massey guys did have a rockshaft connected to the hydraulic ram, but it was best suited mostly for the two row cultivators, and some with a crude farm loader of their own design. The later models though, were fitted with a fair three point on the 33, 44, 333 and 444 series. None ever were as well fitted as the Fords with the Ferguson designed system like your 8n and of course many later models. I'm glad to hear your old machine stayed in the family and is a smooth runner !!

      Yessir, these little flatheads are pretty bulletproof. Such a reliable little engine. There seems to be a heck of a lot of old Masseys up there because they produced them somewhere up there. The other factory was in Racine Wisconsin, so there's a lot in the upper midwest of the US as well. We had a local dealership, so we have quite a few in this area, but not nearly as many as you guys !! Thanks for the comment Joe...I appreciate the corroboration on the reliability of the Massey line !!

Still need reading glasses if I have dim light and especially if I’m tired. My last good pair I sat on my lawn tractor while I was laying on the ground fixing something and later ran over them never finding a trace. Well anyway, I saw some old Massey restored tractors at R&T that I wanted to take home. So shiny and pretty but there is more beauty in something that has and is still serving it’s purpose. Like the Shakers said, “ That which has in itself the highest use, possesses the greatest beauty”. So I recon that includes us? Maybe? That old tractor just puuuurs along singin a song! My suggestion is to join a Massey Harris Facebook group and put out some feelers or just scoot through the groups threads to find a 33 engine or an entire parts tractor. They are out there. Another option is that you may search out the guys that have installed a 260 cu in 44 engine in place of the 33's 201. I have not done it, but I think they bolt up. I did draw a pretty good total wiring diagram describing the whole thing all the way through when I changed the Lucas electricals on the '72 2000 Ford 3 cylinder. Here it is here: ua-cam.com/video/PXIh78bDr0U/v-deo.html Actually here's the whole changeover short series: ua-cam.com/video/vemzqnr6iEk/v-deo.html Feel free to FF to the good parts. I know I get a little carried away and don't know when to park it on occasion. If you still have a question of what to do after slipping through these, let me know and I'll see if there's a way we can work trough the problem. Adding a voltmeter would be pretty easy especially if you want to keep the ammeter in place. The hardest part would be to find a clear spot to add a 2'' gauge that's not objectionable. The wiring isn't much at that point because basically it will just reference the switch terminal that gets hot when the key turns on and a good ground. My great uncle has a 33 that belonged to my great grandfather. It sat in a shed for a while and became locked up I need to go inside and see what’s going on. I’m nervous because I’ve heard parts are hard to get for these.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  6 місяців тому +1

      If it’s just stuck from condensation entering the cylinders, you should be just fine. Of course you may have to pull the pistons to hone the cylinders and re-ring it. But you are absolutely right there are a lot of parts that are not available for them at all. But on a good note, I am reasonably certain do I have not done it myself, that a 44 engine can be shoehorned in there with a little creativity. I’ve actually seen a 55 engine stuck into a 44 frame but I’ve only heard that a 44 can fit a 33. If that thing was inside the shed, it’s more than likely just oxidation on the cylinder walls. Good luck with your project !!

      That's cool Jeremy. I'd take two more if they came along. LOL I have an old 101 Jr that should have the F124 and it has the F160 in it. They were so interchangeable through the series. Even on the small self propelled combines. There might have been some carb linkage changes here and there, but the engines were the same external physical size.

    I always did like a 12 V battery on a 6 V starter it will really spin an old tractor over.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  Рік тому +1

      On a tight engine, 12v has been known to spin the starter ring too... But no matter to me because every 12v conversion I've done is with a 6v starter. I think the increased speed of rotation kinda compensates for an older and well worn low compression engine whose compression is even lower. The purists argue that 6v starts 'em fine if every thing else is correct. But the sad fact is not everyone has the ability or the money to pay someone to actually make everything correct on a worn out 60, 70 or 80 year old engine. In my estimation the 12v boost on the old tractors gets more people involved in the collection of old iron. Of course that's just my opinion....and we both know what THAT is worth. LOL

      @tinkerinbruce6560 Рік тому

      @@tractorman4461 I have rebuilt several engines and when I do I put higher compression pistons in the units. (Farmall M’s). The just simply won’t spin them since they hit the compression stroke and quite with the 6V system being up to snuff. 12 spins them right over. I’ve never experienced the ring gear coming loose and hope I didn’t jinx myself!😂😂

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  Рік тому +1

      @@tinkerinbruce6560 I can see that as a result of hi comp pistons. I know of two that spun the ring gear with the 12v conversion and they were the larger bore engines. But I too have been lucky. We just heated up and installed a new ring gear on my brother's 8n just a few months ago. It was chewed off though.
