  • This is Episode number 287 of Mike Finnegan's Garage. Who doesn't like a shot at scoring free stuff and who doesn't like their car wiring to melt? Everybody! That's why I've teamed up with the good people at Wire Care to not only fix the wiring nightmares under the hood of my latest project car, a 1970 Datsun 510, but I'm also gonna give away some cool tools and supplies so that you can do the same to your ride. All you have to do is leave a comment on this video. I'll choose my favorite response from the comment section and that person is gonna win a massive haul of Deutch connectors, tools and swag from Wire Care. Three more people are going to win my signature series Cable Tie kits as well! Just leave a comment in the next 48 hours and I promise I'll read every single one of them until I find my favorite and choose the winners.

Was recently diagnosed with non-hodgkins lymphoma, I watch your videos and Roadkill during chemo, helps the time go by so much better. Always entertaining, never boring! Thanks for the welcome distractions! I have been reading responses and some people think I am 'faking it' to win the tools. The port in my chest and the chemo are not fake. I fully never expected to win the tools, I just made this post to let Mike know how his videos help me get through chemo. Nothing more, nothing less. I appreciate all the support from everyone and for the people who think it is fake..try going through this and see how fake it really is 😐

You may be frustrated with your broken leg right now, but enjoy your down time at home with your family. I know it’s cliche, but everyone says you’ll miss having a noisy messy house full of kids. At least your injury happened while having a blast and making memories with your son. Prayers for a quick recovery. You’ll be rested and ready to tackle your next projects. Good luck!

You crack me up. A few months unable to drive a manual and you consider selling cars😂. Your impatience and strong A.D.D makes me think we are related. Now’s the time to tackle all the tedious projects that get sidestepped because you’re usually going 15 different ways. Wiring panels at your bench, tedious welding, ect. The “downtime” will fly by and in the end you will realize you took advantage of the time for the better.

My golder receivers, yes I said recievers instead of retreivers, and I went out for a pass. I jumper higher than both dogs caught the pass and started to run for the endzone WHEN my dog named Brick tackled me by striking my left ankle and shattered it in 16 places. While lying on the ground after I fumbled, my other reciever Maggie, picked up the fumble and both dogs ran on to score. For the next year my Harley, my Challenger R/T, my boat all were undrivable. Thank god I had an automatic in my jeep cherokee othwise I would have been stranded. Brick and Maggie have since passed but the 12 screws and 8 inch metal plate remind me of the love we shared chasing balls. To this day too much activity means fun with pain medication. I feel you brother with every step. Never met you but we are brothers in injury. Hang in and dont sell everything!

Hey Mike, I love the wiring kit. It’s really a great improvement from the old days of wiring. I’m slowly working on my first LS conversion of my 84 S10 pickup. My passion for this project is still strong but my body is another story. Having Parkinson’s disease hampers my ability to work on anything, especially wiring. Trying to wire my project is a challenge that’s so hard and difficult that I give up and stare, wondering if I’ll ever finish it. The loom kit looks so easy to use, anybody can do it. I know that I’m not worthy of such a gift, but as my hands and arms shake so badly it’s satisfying to watch your video and see your kindness for people and your family. Giving something to someone from your heart means the world to me. I have always worked hard especially with my hands. I can’t change that and have to live with it, but you always make good choices when you’re gifting something from heart and that’s why I’ve always been a fan of you. Thanks again for great videos and I look forward to seeing many more.😊

    Love the Datsun 510's,
When I broke my leg 17 years ago, I also was laid up on a couch.
My wife went garage selling with the kids and brought home two kittens to keep me company. DON'T let your wife go garage selling.:)
All kidding aside, the kittens did help keep me busy.
Pulling the entire wire harness out to repair it has inspired me to look into doing the same thing with my 1986 F-250.
    Please keep doing this show.

After a dirt bike accident I had 13 surgeries on my left leg, only thing that really kept me from agreeing to amputate it was the want to drive my manual cars. My kids would be at school and I would hobble out to the garage after pt, just practice working the clutch.

Mike I watch all you shows and enjoy every one of them. Keep your head up
Back in 2021 I was at a show and a girl was trying to back up a 69 Camaro and had it inn1st gear instead of reverse and ran over my right leg broke my femur and crushed my knee. I spent 2 months in hospital in traction and 6 months on crutches.
At the time of the accident my grandson and I were building his 55 f100 truck. Him and I rebuilt the engine and I was teaching him to weld and do body work on crutches. There were quite a few challenges along the way not being able to get down and then back up. But I just told myself that it’s all going to get better in the long run. We finished his first truck in February of 23 and he is very proud of it , there wasn’t a bolt that he didn’t touch in the total build. Keep up the great work and shows.

Hey mike, just wanted to say thank you for all you do. I actually got the pleasure of meeting you with my fiancé at LS Fest in bowling green and I was all kinds of star struck and fan girling. I recently watched your boat racing video “ broke the 632 and still went racing” got all the way to you crying getting your trophy’s, expressing to the legendary boat racers that you admire and look up to them. So I sat there thinking and said damn I hope one day I get to experience to him that Mike is the same way for me. I can’t tell you how many time watching your videos has made me tear into my car and just started playing with it. Or the classic watching UA-cam at 1am seeing something and going holy hell I’m trying that. So I just wanted to stop by and say that how you feel about all those legendary boat racers in your video, is exactly how I look up to and appreciate you in racing and just going out with your buddies and having fun. Thank you for being you and thank you for inspiring an entire generation of people like me. I find it interesting you have been sidelined at this time in your life. I went through an acid test so to speak as you are now.
You have to give up a lot in quitting some of your tv stuff while still knowing it was the right thing to do. Apparently someone didn’t think it was enough to quit that! He sidelined you harder and said, “Sit down! Listen!” You have to listen now. You will come to realize what is truly important. Better now than when you can’t do something about it! Enjoy your family! You’ve got the right idea. You just needed a little push.

Sorry to hear about your injury. Welcome to the wonderful world of Datsuns. While they are mostly reliable, you do run into some learning experiences that can result in fond memories.
My experience with Datsuns started about 15 years ago. I bought my first Datsun 510 and I still have it. As a matter of fact I own three first gen Datsun 510s.
May you have many wonderful experiences and less wiring issues in the future with your Datsun.

You have renewed my motivation to start the rewiring of my 83' square body pick up. I have put if off due to the pain staking of the putting the plastic wire loom on. Now I see there is an easier and faster option to doing it. I'm all about it. The box wrench method is not going to work for me anymore. Thx for bring the new method to light. Heal quickly we need you back to bang shifting some death metal scrap down some unsafe road. :)

One of my favorite cars, along with a couple 69 and 71 road runners, a 67 cougar, a 69 ranchero, I still absolutely loved my 76 Datsun B210. Blue with red and white stripes, manual tranny and a 4 cylinder that was abused beyond it's capabilities, it was the car I had so much fun with. But like others, it was plagued with electrical issues. I had to remove the dash and the front harness many times. I got to where I didn't even fully bolt the dash back together cause I knew it would go nuts again. I'd so much appreciate to have great tools to help get through issues like the ones above. Love your show, your attitude to keep going no matter what goes nuts. I do the same and even by brothers don't understand how I keep it together. LOL, keep it up.

This cars wiring reminds me of my grandparents Volvo p1800 that i inherited.
It is sitting still for ten years at least and the is so much wire corrosion and bad wiring, more then half of the electric system doesn't work.
At least I got it started last week and it runs like a dream surprisingly.
Now I need to make all the lighting and sensor work or maybe just engine swap it and make everythign modern instead and start fresh.
Thanks for the great content and all the useful information 👍🏻

I have a 77’ VW bus and also melted the main wire harness. I had a brand new harness made, and I am rewiring the whole bus. I decided that just doing the front wiring was not worth it. Making that decision was tough but what I have found proved that I made the correct decision. I also fell and tore up my shoulder so wiring was something that I could handle while recovering. I love your show and you are the reason I bought a power probe.

    (around 10, I'm 62now).
My uncle Jim had one that looked just like that, and one winter he slid it into a ditch.. well, my uncle was raised on a farm in Nebraska.. at 6&1/2' tall and built like a linebacker.. he got out of the car, picked it up and put it back on the road.
It's been one of my favorite cars ever since (but never had one).

Good call on not buying the Mazda truck. Mini's are awesome, but that one would need a engine swap or a full bada$$ build on the engine.
Your channel is the only one I have set to send me notifications when a new video is available. I always wanted a tacoma like the 97 you had in mini trucking years ago. I actually started building one but got rid of it and focused on family. My next build I want to build either a 55 or 57 chevy, it doesn't matter if it's a 4 door, a 2 door post, a 2 door, a nomad or a station wagon; I just want to build one. I think the wagon would be the best option in my opinion because not that many people do them and most people think that they are a nomad anyway.

HATS OFF TO YOU TWO!! After more years than I care to count, me and wiring are just like oil & water. You see, many moons ago I had a really nice hot rod (50 Plymouth, Cragers, etc., etc.) One night while out with my favorite girl (of course trying to impress her...) I smelled something burning. Now at 50 MPH my old tank did NOT stop on a dime, more like an out of control freighter coming in to shore. In any case, along with the smell came the next phase....light or in my case fire. After finally bringing my land shark to a halt and tearing all .....YES, I mean all of the wiring out from behind my 8 track tape player we successfully put out the under the dash / tape player fire. Once back home, I figured I could simply replace the burnt wires with new and all would be good....except it still left a short and once again we were sitting around the camp fire. At this point, the job was farmed out to a professional......OH, I used to have long hair then.....shortly there after I had none.....

Hi Mike, my nephew just bought a Datsun 510 himself and is already starting to do some work on it, engine is already shipped out to get refreshed and he wants to start on the rest.
