- I hope you're sitting down cause this is one long, strange and fun road trip. Episode 286 of Mike Finnegan's Garage is all about a trip my friends I took, which began in Georgia but saw us driving to the coast of South Carolina and then to the mountains of North Carolina and finally, back to Georgia. Along the way I bought a 1970 Datsun 510 two-door, with the goal of driving it from the beach to the mountains so we could go snowboarding one last time before the season ended. The car was mostly great and it made it home intact. My leg? Not so much. lol

We're glad we were able to help you out with the connectors, and we enjoyed hanging out with you and the guys for a few minutes. Sorry to hear about the injury and hopefully the recovery will be a quick one. Welcome to the Datsun community! You'll find that the old Datsuns are nimble and fun to drive. Enjoy!
You legend! Beautiful datsun dude!
Thanks!
Have a white 1969. I'd love to say as nice as yours!!
A Z260 is nimble??
LoL
Peace!
Wish I had B210 back
Beautiful 1600!
Pro-Tip: Use a Gatorade bottle for the puke/recovery bottle. The ribs in the bottle help it not slip out of the zip-tie. 0:03
plus it can take a bit higher temp then the flimsy water bottle
I like Vermont maple syrup bottles - the little.jug handle is great for a zip tie 😂
For years he will hear” turn off the car, Jordan!” Lol. Glad everything worked out. Cool car.
Jordan with the reflexes of a jet lagged sloth there! 😅 "Turn off the car Jordan!" and "Open the trunk Jordan!" 😋
Talk about stirring up old memories. I was stationed in Charleston in 1972 Since my Malibu SS in CA, I ended up getting a Datsun 510 for transportation. Basic 2 door, L16, 4 speed, and not much else. I drug that thing around over the years... Charleston, Rota Spain, California, Hawaii, and back to SoCal before finally traiding it in on a 1977 Datsun 620 pickup, with an L20 and a 4 speed. Trashed the 4 speed, and upgraded it to a 5 speed. Good memories with both of them.
That car has been to more places than most people. How cool.
Mike, great 510, get well soon.
Love this episode, it has that strong OG Roadkill feel. Mike you have always been the driving force of that show from day one. Wish you would do more like this one!!Mad❤ and respect Bro!!!🤟😎👍💯💯💯💯💯
Did you not notice the white truck following behind through them whole show.
this was a great watch, really nice datsun and i hope you get better soon
37:33 in the dump trucks defense, you completely ignored that there was indeed an entire right lane for turning you chose to ignore 😆😆
yeah i didnt even notice the turning lane until it was too late.
I would have cut that part out. Whoever edited this did him dirty lol.
A cam and twin sidedraft webbers will liven that little legend up i love them you cant even find a four door in Australia now
Correction Mike. The 55 mph speed limit started in 1974, the year I got my license. Major bummer. I had a year of a restricted permit to know was I was missing, and plenty of speeding tickets, because I didn't like it.
Thanks for the awesome video! This was worth watching as a owner of a 510 🤙🏽🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I'm naming it the Piss Missle!
Speedy recovery Mike🙏
Epic!
I had a '72 240Z. Miss it, Mike! It had good leg room, but yeah, kind of tight side to side. Love that 510!
I am shocked the people at the gas station didn’t give you a bunch of grief about turning their pumps into a repair shop. Good on them.
Yeah I was surprised no-one came out to ask what they were doing. Didn't look busy though.
The older the car - the more latitude you'll get. You know it's real bad when they are bringing you free hot dogs, coffees and drinks. Ask me how I know 😂
I had one of these back in the day, not sure of what the year was exactly. The throttle linkage went from driver side compartment to passenger side compartment, then thru the firewall to the engine. You could put your toes up and under the linkage and FLOOR it from the passenger side.... Ask me how i know, LOL... ENJOY IT, WE DID...
When we had Raver Motorsports, my old partner Vern Brunges had THE recipe for a killer L23 using all stock parts. We tore apart so many VG30Es to get the connecting rods out of them. I could still tear one down in my sleep...lol.
Bro is there anyway you can bring me a new strut for the passenger rear
I soooo miss my 510's!!!! they were such a blast to drive the curvy mountain roads! oh! and comfortable with velvety caddy like seats squished in her! lol & Summit Point great memories!
It’s like watching Faster With Finnigan.
WATER BOTTLE FIX---Bought an 04 Ram w/5.9 Cummins did not have an overflow for the coolent.. put a rubber hose to a thick water bottle and it's worked for over a year!😂
Gatorade bottle is best, very thick and has the grooves for the zip ties.
As a long time Datsun 510 owner, I can safely say that is a nice one! But, that truck shifter is garbage!! We used to run the shortest ones possible, or just shorten and thread them for the knob. The harness can be a real Jekyll and Hyde deal, if they are uncut, they will last forever, but, once tampered with, they can be a nightmare! I currently own a '72 two door with a Nissan Xterra VG33E V6 and a 300ZX 5 Speed. Almost out of the garage. But those L-18 engines are hard to beat! They will run forever with the proper care. Congrats and Welcome to the 510 Cult!
I used to have a 1980 Datsun pickup in high school. It had a 280z motor and trans swapped in it from a wrecked 280. I had a blast in that pick up. I ended up totaling it hitting a deer coming home from work in the middle of the night after I painted it. The deer wouldn't have totaled it if I had the front bumper on the truck. I had just painted it black with two mustard yellow stripes still had tape on the mirrors. I was going to put the truck back together the next morning at home. I feel sick to my stomach just thinking about it. I'm 40 years old now and I still think about that truck often. I've always wanted a 510 to go with that truck in the driveway. Maybe some day. Congrats! The car is beautiful!
Welcome to the 510 brotherhood!
My first car at 16 was a 1971 510. It was given to me by a friend of my older brother. Being a northers car, it was full of rust! I wrenched on that car a ton and learned a lot. It looked like crap, but was fun the drive.
My best friends first ride was a mid 70s 210 it was brornge in color brown/orange and had dimpled hubcaps and we had an absolute blast rallying that thing. He got it from his grandparents and his grandpa had some crazy carb setup on it and it got like 40mpg and in the mid 90s he'd fill it for like 10$ and drive forever
When you pulled into the gas station, I think the guy walking past was thinking about stealing it if you went inside! Lol
Well, it's about time you bought a cool car!!! Now all you need is a 2 litre twin cam with ITBs, 6 speed manual, slightly upgraded suspension and brakes. Making around 300hp and it would be PERFECT 👍.
No need for twin cam, l series is a great motor.
@@koneking2569 There's twin cam heads for them :)
FYI... sports drink bottles or any thick plastic bottle work better for radiator overflow tanks.
appreciate you bringing light to the fact that not all old hot rods are from the big 3. I love my classic american cars but I also have a soft spot for olds toyotas and datsuns.
all cars can be made good.
Absolutely, I struggle with the Mopar or Ford croud when I show up with a 2J Celica. My datsun cars always seem to get some respect
You gotta watch out for those black bellied whistling ducks, man. I saw a group of those things heckle a gator so hard that it needed therapy.
Epic trip with the boys. A badass car... broken leg... worth it
yup. im still smiling.
@@FinnegansGarage the “why didn’t it blow a fuse?” Isn’t a 510 thing it’s a Datsun thing, my roadster has the fuse block with a burnt hole. Get a new fuse block with newer fuses and redo it. I’ve rewired 1/2 my car to melted plugs. Hope this helps
Mike says the word "Datsun" and somewhere in the world there's a man named Mike whose eye started twitching
noticed the star on the rearview mirror switch, now kids, thats fer nite drivin!! cool ride!
dude didn't like your turn because you're turning right, in to a driveway, from the left hand lane....wtf.
Man! There's something about late 60s/early 70s Japanese cars! Love this!
Listen to the doc! We don't heal quite as well as we used to.
....all cars from that Era! Simple and stylish, perfect combo
Grew up racing Datsun 510s in SCCA in AK. Such a great car and love the episode! Some racer friends pulled the 2.7 inline 6 out of a 280z, notched the firewall in a 510 back like 12 inches and installed the inline size. Insane little righ. Wish you could get hold of them these days would love one as a project car!
Yup... gettin' old sucks! Sorry about your leg. Glad you're gonna make a full recovery. And, I really miss snowboarding. 😢
I also broke my fibula. On a three-wheeler Honda 250 or something like that. Piece of s*** death trap
I think Paul Newman raced one as well. Another INCREDIBLE car from this time is the 1973-75 Toyota Celica!!! Same thing and THEY LOOK GREAT!!
In the early 80s I had a 510 station wagon with a 4speed, cam, headers, carb and a glass back. The body was seven different colours, and had rust and lots of body damage, but the motor ran great, and I had tall good winter tires, it was my winter beater and ski machine, when I lived in Canada. We made a wooden box on the roof, just screwed it on to the roof, for the skis, and with the extra space of the station wagon four of us could load up our gear and go skiing. When the roads got really bad, I had a full set of chains. It was a great driving winter beater, it was fun to drive and I hated selling it.
BTW, I’ve broken both fibulas skiing.
Cheers from Tokyo
I would say a big shout out to Jason for being a great car guy is due ! Thanks Jason. Mike try to pay attention when carving and good news about your leg and I hope everyone else had fun and now can we please get back to building ProMod Street cars, thank you and good luck.
Dr.Wall is freaking awesome. Most of my family has used him. Great doctor
I broke my fibula the same way during my first deployment, it was diagnosed as "high ankle sprain" (no, the PA didn't order x-rays)
I NEVER got it wrapped or even crutches, it was quite painful to walk on for the first 3 weeks.
I didn't actually find out it had broken until 5 years later during my exit physical
The big bummer, I was getting into cross-country running, after the break (which did NOT fully heal) I no longer have the stability to take on un-even terrain
Glad yours was diagnosed and does NOT need surgery!
lol those cars always melt the headlight wiring, headlights are permanent hot and grounded by the switch at full amps!
I had a workmate who owned a 70's 510. She had it all tricked out and was an SCCA racer. It was her daily driver too. She had a lead foot for sure. LOL. I knew folks who had down draft dual Hollies on those cars . They liked them better then the side drafts. The Datsun side draft carbs were notoriously cold-blooded on start-up. I had a 72 240Z and those carbs were tuned and they still had cold start issues. Get the Hollies for better running overall. Get well soon Board Runner. Hope it heals fast.
1:31 He honked at you because you didn't get in the turn lane. Cummon man.
I would 1000% name that car crème brûlée
Memories, my old 71 DATSUN 1200 was so cool. I wish I had not taken it 4wheeling. (kid stuff)
Head gasket eater but easy fix.we stuffed that 2.0 into sunbeam 5speed was great
Imagine watching an hour and a half video just to NOT see him eat snow.
Sweet as, the Datsun 510 my favourite little car. Such a fun thing to drive.
Great video guys.
Just like back in my day "We just hit it with whatever".
LOL...
Brings back memories. My first car was a 1978 510 with a 1980 grille and headlights. 2L engine out of an 83 240Z with dual Weber sidedrafts. Went like a bat out of hell! Brock rally edition red/white/blue paint and 50 series tires all around, cornered like a rock! Would give a body part or 2 to have that car back again!
Did I hear a nod to Die Hard while you were looking for the cause of the electrical problem ? 😊
27:00 you two look like The Blues Brothers with your matching attire😂
If we can get a shirt with the Smokey 510 with a sillouette of you standing next to it with your boot on that would be awesome, thank you.
As soon as you started that thing, I could smell my teenage years. That is such an iconic sound.
We have Bear World in Idaho. Some cool animals like an Albino Elk.
FUN FACT: Paul Newman's first race car was a 510. Bob Sharp told Paul he needed to race slow underpowered cars to learn smoothness. It worked. He had a very successful driving career. Probably the highpoint was when he finished 2'nd in the 24hrs of Lemans after losing the lead due to mechanical difficulties.
A Datsun, really a Datsun. Think about it Finnegan, God gave you a broken leg for that. Get better quick.
Momma said that alligator have all them teeth but no toothbrush that's why they so mean
I too am California born in bread, but I have transplanted to New Mexico. Don't ask me why period
Awesome, ive always wanted a 510. There was a guy I went to high school with that had a baby blue one with bronze wheels, was a badass little car It was slammed to the ground and had 3 jl audio w7s in it. That little thing would shake windows 5 blocks away.
I had something similar happen on a semi kept taking out the marker light wiring or tripping the breaker eventually found that the driver had forced the wrong bulb in one of the markers causing the short
They really keep re describing everything that happens zzz
…. Yea dude we know… obviously just seen it with an explanation….. you don’t have to keep doing it.
It’s messing up the content. For sure. You won’t get ppl skipping thru a video if those parts are removed.
You need to come buy some ls swapped mustang cobra. I’m about 2.5 hrs from you. On Holley terminator.
Yeap. The wiring harness was " Show Car'd ". Datsun never ran the wiring through the Fender well like that.
ive heard left hand ignition was Lemans start as well. but ive also heard it was due to metal shortages during the war. left hand ignition used less wiring.
Should cut the shifter down a few inches idk if that's possible but shit grabbing it not knowing or thinking and blasting the dash that would suck
Break a leg bro I’m stoked about your Datson Hope you get better from a friend north of you in Ellijay Ga
I love it up there! I adopted a pair of very senior kitties from Gilmer county AC in Ellijay.
Some people it's all about the money..... Other's like Matt do to help people and sure make money but will work with you.
funny you're in a Datsun today Finnegan... I'm looking at a roadkill hotweels 'Rotsun'... I'm SO tempted!
Lmao unlocked memory of taking chrome wheel caps thinking your so cool with them on your bike 🤦♂️
There was a dude in my high school that had four 510 one two door I'm not stoked on there engine but the look of them slammed is sick it doesn't look.like a BMW the body lines are so much better idk how old mike is but I graduated in 02 an the cars that he loves were the same ones we loved an had good score finne
Pretty sure those wheels are the same type that come on the 60’s mini in England. I could be wrong though.
37:35 That happens when you don't use the dedicated turn lane
I checked out a B210 "Honey Bee" back in the 70's and the air rush through the carburator was louder than the exhaust. When I punched it in 1st gear it felt like it was going backwards.I bought a '74 Celica GT 18RC and I loved that thing. I drove the wheels off it.
Jordan does not move fast. We know that now.
I've spent many a night snowboarding down Sugar Mountain.
Love the 510, so much potential in those. Bummer about the leg though. Hope recovery goes well.
First car I drove was my Dad's 1967 Datsun 510 4 door. 67 cu in and 67 HP! 4 speed. Only thing I could drag race was my friend in his VW Bug! I remember on the Interstate you just put it to the floor and left it there. You'd go 65 up the hill and 75 down the hill so you averaged the speed limit!
Yo Finn them wheels are original factory Datsun/Nissan wheels and they are in really nice condition
rewired your car at a gas station.... AWESOME IMPRESSIVE
Sweet ride my dad had this exact Datsun when I was a child so many memories ,I would have probably paid a whole lot more then 12 k because they’re so rare and the emotion connection I have for these cars cool car great content 🫡💯
Sorry Mike but it was 1974, not 1970.
In 1974, the federal government passed the National Maximum Speed Law, which restricted the maximum permissible vehicle speed limit to 55 miles per hour (mph) on all interstate roads in the United States.
I remember because I got my license in 72.
What sites do you research prospective cars from?
I use to have a condo at The Highlands at Sugar, howd you like the twisty turns?
Best thing about mike is he listens to the people around him. would have been easy to not tape anything up, but they did the parts needed.
I was one of the underbidders on that auction. Part of me is kind of sad I didn’t keep bidding, but I had this feeling I was always going to lose, ya know? It would have paired nicely with my BMW 2002.
Sorry ‘bout the leg.
You're wearing warm clothing. Gators don't like to come out much in the cold. There's a transition temp where they'll come out to warm themselves via the sun. So, folks can help for that.
I'm a bit of a gator aficionado. This is for others who want to spot gators in their travels.
Glad your injury was not overly serious to need surgery! Cool ass car to boot but through the whole episodes all I could think was...
"This is pure snow! It's everywhere! Do you have any idea what the street value of this mountain is?" Charles De Mar
Congrats on the Dime,Mike! Sorry to hear about the injury though. Looking forward to this project. Drop an SR20 in that!
Such an awesome video and trip, love a Datsun. Your son is a little ripper on a board! If he keeps at it he'll be shredding, you wont see him for half the year but he'll be sick!
I use to have a 510 rally car. The most fun you can have on dirt or wet roads legally. It had twin SU’s and a built 2L with a 10k redline pushing 200 ponies.
There’s a huge amount of parts available to get them handling like they run on rails.
These days the few remaining ones in Australia tend to have an SR20 under the hood.
This felt more like an old school Roadkill than a Finnegan's Garage episode, good stuff. Thank good you got the power cut before the harness actually went up in flames.
LOL@ Smokey and the Band-Aids ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
SO, in the late 70's, when I was a kid, my buddy had a Datsun 1200 and I had the exact blue 69 Impala (Crusher). We're rat racing up the highway and I'm letting him stay in front of me and we're going about 75mph. He then decides to stop for a yellow light without the slightest thought that my car weight about 4 X as much as his. Well, let's just say he was the luckiest person in the town that day.
I would like to see an RB26 in that 510. Everyone does 2JZs. I'd like to see a RB26. That would make that car dangerous!!!! There is a company in Australia making cast iron RB26 blocks and suped up heads for them.
So it's funny, my vintage Datsun racecar is a roadster, as seen in the episode, and was sponsored by both a SC beach business (from Myrtle Beach) and was also sponsored by Sugar Mountain.
Glad you met some of the Datsun gang out there!
What ever happened to the toter home???
When I was 5 I was riding shotgun in my dad’s 510 and someone cut him off. I slid right out of the seatbelt because I was way too small to sit up front and head butted the windshield. It cracked and he panicked but I was fine. I feel like that’s when “the bug” was planted and I’ve loved cars ever since.
