- I finally played Dragons Dogma in 2023
Dragons dogma is a game that has been requested constantly for this channel for almost two years.
I finally gave dragons dogma a shot in 2023 and to my surprise the gameplay is solid and the presentation isn't half bad but I'm also struggling to get through it.
So this video is all about Dragons dogma and my initial impression on dragons dogma's gameplay as well as it's story and world.
I'm a little torn on dragons dogma but lets find out how good it actually is.

Great game, loved it. Dark Arisen is hard as balls, though. "They're master works all, you can't go wrong".
Ok ok I’m going to keep going but I’m gonna take my time with it, definitely seems like one of those games better on a second run
@@JacksGameReviews I dropped that comment before watching the vid BTW. My only advice would be stick with it. If you make it to 10 hours, or so, and still aren't enjoying it, bin it off. Life's too short and not every game is for everyone.
After the dragon eats your heart the game takes time until it the main quest gets interesting, you get bombarded with tutorials and side quests, it can be overwhelming.
Best thing to do is to stick with the main quest to get a feel for the game and then when everything becomes familiar try some side quest in between main quest, hopefully this helps.
If you stick to the main quest, you lock yourself out of a wagonload of sidequests permanently. The game does a poor job explaining this.
@@watchdogCZ you're right, I forgot about that, yeah the game does a poor job explaining that, hopefully Dragon's Dogma 2 makes that clear.
I just picked this up and have about 20 hours in it. I was confused why people kept saying it's got parts of Dark Souls in it until I started playing. The game does NOT hold your hand at all and just says "hey have at it." You can walk into places that you aren't supposed to go early and you get rekt. Definitely see that part of souls games. The combat keeps me coming back to this game, once you get a few hours into your vocation it really starts to flesh out. I had to push through the early game before I really started finding enjoyment.
Just take your time, it will click. It's a blast when your pawns are powerful. Magic archer class is great.
Magick Archer BESTO job, my friend 8D
Playing as a Fighter in the beggining almost made me drop the game, until a changed my class to Strider. You get good ranged and melee options and it's the only class with natural buffs to climbing monsters (extra damage and speed). It's similar to Assassin with dual dagger and short bow, but is much more engaging and balanced in general.
Try all vocations read the description of weapon/armor (the description doesnt lie) and dont bother the story just level up use your potions cuz you will have a lot of them later on do all the quest that you can do and have fun !
Restart the game , pay attention to Dialogue and follow direction. Open quest journal, and keep an eye on what's the main quest. Dabble in side quest once you feel comfortable or ready to explore a bit.
Your purpose is to become the night in shining armor, & slay the Dragon...
Want to be support, with some offensive spells? Mage.
Want to cast the craziest destructive spells (but still just use holy focus bolt to destroy everything)? Sorcerer.
Want an auto aim ranged character that sets itself on fire (and can one shot the "end" boss)? Magick Archer.
Want the most versatility for weapon choice/skills with augments that promote solo play? Assassin.
Want the least versatility for weapon choice and confined to only 3 skills (but you do it anyway because you want the challenge)? Warrior.
Want to sword and shield, a tank with crazy i-frame skills? Fighter.
Want to focus on climbing big monsters to cause the most damage with daggers while being able to still use a bow? Strider.
Want to focus on ranged damage (sometimes extreme range) with daggers to fall back on (or you just want to have more stamina)? Ranger.
Want to be a tank that enchants their shield to punish anything that attempts to attack you and the ability to channel magic through their weapon for some AoE abilities and a 'Magic Cannon'? Mystic Knight.
Every vocation is a viable way to play the game, they all have their strengths and you can mitigate the weaknesses with pawns. Just find the playstyle that suits you and have fun. I would suggest to look into pawn inclinations, or the rules that the pawn ai have to follow. Tweaking these can help a pawn become more proficient at their vocation. Augments can also be a factor in how pawns use skills, such as augments that increase stamina will cause the pawn to use skills more often, or one that betters stamina use while climbing will cause the pawn to climb monsters more, etc.. And lastly, only equip your pawn with a few skills. This will reduce the choice the AI has to make causing them to use the skills you want more often.
I hope you continue on your quest to recover your heart from the dragon, Arisen, and to learn the truth of the Endless Chain. Of course, followed by solving the mystery of Bitter Black Isle. Best of luck!
You get free equipment and items at the beginning in your storage. It's part of the dark arisen dlc. You also get an eternal ferrystone in your inventory once reaching the big city... and you get a portcrystal at the bottom of the first story dungeon, the everfall. Both of which are for fast travel.
Going out at night is crazy if underleveled cuz the higher level monsters come out at night. If you can't beat something, you're supposed to run away....the game overtly tells you this.
And you're supposed to switch out your 2 hired pawns every so often since only your main pawn levels with you. And you're supposed to check their skills, augments, gear and knowledge...and inclinations (most important if you want pawns to act a certain way.
Giving your pawns lanterns and pickaxes and they will use it. No need to add oil to your pawns' lanterns since they never go out unlike yours.
I would level other vocations simce they may have augments that are good for the class you want. Augments are cross class, skills are not. Skills do more damage than regular attacks but they drain your stamina.
Character creator actually influences your gameplay. Creating a bigger guy allows you to reach higher ledges but drains your stamina faster and allows you to carry more.... while creating a smaller guy allows you to get into small caves (only 1 area applicable), is faster, and uses less stamina.
Once you reach level 10, you can switch to the advanced and combined classes but only in the big city and bitterblack isle.
You can climb and/or target different areas on big monsters for their weakness and more items. ie target the tusks on cyclopses to get more drops and target the eye as their weakness. Also a lot of monsters have elemental weaknesses.
Careful of doing main story quests as side quests auto fail when reaching certain milestones in the story....the game is meant to be replayed, that's why.
Make sure when you finish a story quest to listen to what the npc says they tell you where to go to pick the next one up or meet them
try strider, or assasin with dagger and bow, let other pawns be other vocations, try one fighter, one mage with healing and one sorcerer, climb monters and always unlock core skills for any vocation you are trynig. Finally rotate pawns a lot and listen to their advice on monster killing.
I really want to like this this as i love open world games but really struggling with difficulty and knowing where to go 😢
Same
I'm currently playing the game and the dragon taking your heart was a curse he put on you bc you were the only one to pierce his scales strider, magic archer, and assassin are amazing classes. It's good to play all classes bc they give different passive perks that you can equip on any class and some of the best ones don't sound like they would be any good but are amazing the leveling takes time unless you go to the dlc with throw blast then you can hit level 50 pretty easily before starting story I love this game and love that you made a review
I love the game! Try to figure out what you like to play. Play your game, not someone else's. Dragon's Dogma, for me, was very mysterious. I had to beat it to know what was going on. It had me hooked. I beat the game the first time as The Mystic Knight.
I can completely understand where you are coming from. I happened to get hooked in the game, though I did struggle at times to find the 'fun' parts toward the beginning of the game.
Apparently, about 80% of the game's (would-be) content was scrapped due to budget constraints. There are also a few issues with certain aspects of the game - one of them having to due with not enough content in the earlier game, and I therefor find that there isn't much player agency or direction at that point.
I don't recommend searching the internet for answers, or you will lose the magic of learning and experiencing the game for yourself. I will contradict myself when it comes to learning about the method of fast-travel. I would recommend world exploration and some main quest progression.
If you don't find much fun in the next few hours (ignoring how long ago this video was posted), then it is possible that the game isn't a good pick for you. It is the type of game that excels in specific areas, and you will suffer through a couple others in order to experience something special.
Actually the Goblins scream "Who let the dogs out?!!"
Oh and sprinting in towns doesn't consume stamina but running outside does
Believe me, I had the same feeling when I started this game. i even thought about refunding it. But then I gave it another try and I havent stopped playing it since. You will struggle in the beggining, its hard, youre gonna die stupidly, youll rage quit. But keep going. Its worth it.
Mystic Archer is a good class in case you go after heavy hitters and want to shoot them from a distance, sure you can use other classes for that but Mystic Archer has both magic and melee, plus a decent health pool and access to alot of armor which magic users don't gave much access to.
Magick Archer.
Love this game to death, there is a LOT of great things about it, but there's some bad (mainly the lack of tutorials for newer players - it IS and ISN'T a problem; not everyone likes tutorials, should be optional for others who need the help).
Tips:
Try understanding the Ferrystone system (fast travel)
Test out vocations, there is no wrong way to play the game. Don't worry about stats too much, stick to what you like playing once you get used to stuff. (May not have the luxury of time to test all vocations out, but there's some cool videos showcasing all the possibilities, EX: "Every Vocation is OP - [Dragon's Dogma]" - NOTE: Spoilers for zones/enemies)
The story, while it is seen as hot garbage by most people, is more so filled with lore than the initial quests give. The options are wide in terms of scope for the game akin to BG3 (not as much, but similar aspects).
A second playthrough is always fun and allows you to try new things in the story. (You keep your level and equipment by the way, so you can pseudo-speedrun it.)
Eventually, when you play enough and get good at the game you can do Level 1 Bitter Black Isle runs (Mid-to-End-Game DLC zone). That stuff is exciting as hell.
I'm just starting this game as well, right at the start, good first impressions though. Maybe watch a Giantbomb let's play?
I bought this game and i have no idea how to play it
The game at the beginning assumes you will overlevel a bit. Enter an area, farm it at night gain some levels, and when you get to the next area you will be probably at the level you are supposed to be.
Absolutely moronic advice.
What on earth are you even talking about?
People simply don't pay attention , before leaving the city the follower tells you buy a lantern and get equipment do people listen ? No this is not fornite you need to pay attention
Haha
Finally! It is confusing for the first time my, it actually is. Hell when I played it on my old ps3 for the first time I kid you not I had like 180 plus hours of gameplay just trying to figure out how things worked in the game. Wouldn't trade it for nothing!
I told you the story isn't all that great or fleshed out and there was a lot of content cut from the final product. It's preferable that you keep playing the game slow and for more hours and then do a complete review.
Yep going to take my time with it, went in expecting the story not to be great thanks to you but everything else is tough to learn
Gonna be a interesting few weeks :D
DD is the single most underrated game EVER made. There’s a reason for its cult following. There’s a reason it still has a consistent player base a decade later WITHOUT MODS. And yes, I realize PC has mods, but the vast, VAST majority of its community have never used a single a mod.
What pisses me off about the game is its critics. It’s one thing to not like a game-that’s fine-but hearing reviewers bitch and moan about shit DD does that they praise Souls games for is fucking maddening.
Fanks for walking us froo your foughts, I found the game fraught but furious and fantastic.
Forgive me.
Oh and when you beat the game, load your saved game for new game+...DO NOT START A NEW GAME as this will reset everything.
Yeah, it doesn't explain a whole lot. But I've loved and played it for years 😂 then I started looking into videos to get advice on how to get stronger. Basically you just start with one vocation level up to 10 then start an advanced vocation to end on. I loved it from the start, but again things aren't for everyone. But it's good to try these things, I mean I put it off thinking it was a Dark Souls games when I saw the announcements 😂 I even put RE7 off for a while because I didn't like the change from the originals and find it's the best in the series now. Far better than the Remakes of 2 onwards.
I understand you man. I just got this game for $4 and I feel scammed. The opening was really good, but then after that they're just a feeling of no progression in the story and inconsistent enemies and a bunch of running around in circles 👎🏾
O man for the first time Jack!?
I loved this game.
It was very janky and convekuded in many mechanics and elements, it didn’t really pick up in the main stream
The big draws are the:
Climb on enemies
Dynamic combat
Pawn system
Where it’s lacking is end game progression
Story is weak af
Settings were weak, all grey and green
The idea that enemies are stronger at night+the darkness was a little ahead of it’s time
I wish the vocations were more nuanced
I’m very excited for 2 because they can improve on all the shortcomings
If u don’t like it by the griffin fight, it’s probably not for you
Love the content, keep the greatness coming dude 👨🏿🍳👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿🔥🔥🔥💪🏿💯👍🏿😎
Cheers max, good to know I’m basically in the same boat
Just gotta stick with it cause I do love the combat
@@JacksGameReviews end game sorcery is the most hype. u can summon tornados and giant glaciers and firestorms. i really wish there was a way to decrease spell cast time tho but again thats where 2 can go crazy
melee builds also get kind of left in the dust in terms of hype moves imo
@@maxpowerscomic7586there is. The Sorcerer augment Articulacy makes it 10% faster. And having a genuine copy of the Wyrmking Ring in your inventory is another 10%
Whats wrong? Simple you are Not paying attention... If you listen to the pawns they tell you important info where to go what to do dont just smash buttons
i love dragons dogma to death. that being said, theres a lot of elements of the game that havent aged well.
A big reason for that is because dragons dogma inspired other action RPG makers in japan to do things better than them.
It is insane to think how this game came out like 8 months after Dark Souls 1 and around the time for Monster Hunter 3 for how amazing it looks and plays.
I don't think any action RPG ive played has come close to dragons dogma except maybe my first impressions of breat of the wild (before it gets very dull) and Elden Ring
I'm pretty sure its also responsible for monster hunter adding a mounted attack system.
You're 3 months late for April Fool's mate. Just pick up a vocation you like, play with it, check out the skills and progress the story. Mount large monsters to deal more damage and stagger them. This game has no tutorial, stop asking for tutorials for your games. There is no 'intention" behind the game. If you don't wanna play it, just don't everyone will be better off.
Not necessarily after a tutorial but it feels unnecessarily confusing for me
Then again I’m playing multiple games at one time so it is tougher for me to remember every aspect :/
@@JacksGameReviews Its just that I don't understand why you call the game confusing. Are you lost as to where to go? Was the dragon stealing your heart and you having to reclaim it not enough narrative build up for you? If you'd explain that more in depth I'd be happy to receive your criticisms. What do you think could be done better? Have you considered that the carriage mission might have left such a bad taste in your mouth that you now hate the game?
This game is so confusing
It was treated worse than Demons Souls, but try to stick with it, it will pay back big time
People will give this game a pass because they say "well its the last 20% of the game that is good, just drudge thru the shit till you get there" is a bat shit crazy opinion...
The developers even admitted they scraped so much content and people ignore that because of the last half of a game you have to walk thru garbage to get thru...
Bad is bad
Elden ring was as empty as dd but its marveled by everyone as goty material. Why is that i wonder
Get good
