Mom mom used to make these all the time but I never took the time to see how she did them. She died not to long ago and as hard as I tried I could never get them to come out like hers until now!! I tried this recipe last night and was brought back to great time gone by!!! Thank you so very much for bringing a little piece of my mom back to me!! They were AWESOME!!!!!
IT'S TIME TO ACT question..since you are a chef: my go-to recipe calls for a bit of cornstarch, but it's a chicken noodle recipe. Is the cornstarch really necessary with the addition of dumplings?
Finally someone who has a fix to this recipe. I have been making these for 40 years and they never fell apart. My mother never used an egg. But your fix makes sense. I just made a batch without your idea so I’ll have to wait till next time. I even let the dough sit to rise a bit. Thank you for your idea. My sons will be happy eating my chicken and dumplings again.
I just prepared a doubled batch of dumpling using your egg recipe:) I'm a country girl and have eaten dumplings all my life at relatives homes and your recipe is the best I've eaten or prepared!! Thanx Larry :0 Fort Plain New York Girl
I REMEMBER NOW!!!! YAY!!!!! :-). IT WAS BISQUICK. IM 76 YRS. OLD, WHEN I WAS A BOY, MY MOM WOULD MAKE ME THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND DELICIOUS FLUFFY AND FLAT HARD DUMPLINGS. MY BAHAMIAN AND JAMAICAN FRIENDS ALL USE THE HARD DUMPLINGS FOR EVERYTHING. BUT I NEVER HAD THE WONDERFUL FLUFFY YELLOW DUMPLINGS MY MOM USED TO MAKE. I REMEMBERED ALL OF HOW SHE COOKED THE WHOLE CHICKEN AND FLAT DUMPLINGS, BUT NOW REMEMBERED THE BISQUICK SITTING ON THE COUNTER. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES
Just use a simmering pot of broth never never boiling. This is pretty much how I watched my mom from Louisville Ky. make her dumplings minus the Biscuit mix. Just flour, baking powder some salt & butter and milk. After watching some videos I think I will incorporate using some of the broth but will still use all of the other ingredients noted above. I never included broth before but it seems like that would be good for seasoning. The dumplings come out fluffy but fully cooked in the middle. My recipe makes the dumplings fluffy and cooked in the center and you can see the butter melting in the middle but they are not gummy. Always remember do not have your broth boiling otherwise the dumplings will just melt away.
You are my new hero!!!!! I started making dumplings from scratch cause my Bisquick dumplings alwayyyys fell apart!! Now I can finally have those yummy fluffy Bisquick ones like my mom made! Thanks so much hun! Much appreciated!
He is right on with this recipe!! It's the best one that I have used. I use this recipe to make dumplings to put on my crockpot sauerkraut and pork roast for New Years Day. I top the pork roast and kraut with the dumplings about 30 minutes before it's done cooking, and scoop out the dumplings once they're done. I also make some mashed potatoes. The kraut and pork topped on the mashed potatoes and dumplings is delicious. I only make this once a year, as it is definitely "stick to your ribs comfort food" lol. This sauerkraut and pork dish is a tradition in our family, and supposed to bring good luck. Happy New Year 2020!😁
I'm shocked and pleased to find this very succinct recipe instruction was made by a man from my hometown. Ironically I was craving the Front Street Cafe (in Brainerd, Minnesota) chicken and dumpling dunplings. As Larry describes the other way of making dumplings often makes mush. I cannot wait to try this method! Thanks Larry! - Christina Rodahl (former Brainerd girl) and chicken dumpling lover at ❤.
I am trying this method RIGHT NOW.... it's actually cooking for the first 10 minutes without a lid as I type this I cannot wait to see how it turns out
Yummy my Gran would be proud of these dumplings. I use to watch her make them but I forgot to add the egg like she did. Thank you Larry. My Gran Will be smiling now.. R.i.p Gran
I just found you while in my search for dumplings. It's not very often you hear/see a video from someone living in the same town you used to live in!! 😊 It caught .y attention right away! THANKS SO MUCH for sharing this recipe! I used to have one very similar to this year's ago! was so happy to find this!! 😊🎉❤
I tried this tonight. Had to use a little more Bisquick to get the right consistency for the 'pre-cook' dumplin dough - perhaps b/c I had an x-large egg. Cooked exactly as directed & they were perfectly done and did not fall apart. However, they were more "cake like" in consistency than I like my dumplins. I guess I like 'em doughier & juicy from the stew. Glad to have this recipe though. I might try it again w/o the extra Bisquick that I used - just to see if that makes the dumplins turn out less cakey. Also, because I kept adding Bisquick a little at a time, I had to stir it more often than "just to incorporate it"; that might be another reason it was more 'cake like'. (Ironically, though, the video says 1 cup but the recipe in description says 1 & 1/3 & I used even more than that. Anyway, worth your try as well, viewers! They were good & easy.
😅 I was trying to mimic my gmas dumplings n found this trick and the egg was definitely missing....however I thought it was a little to fluffy as well then remembered we often didn't have milk so just used water n 2 cups bisquick instead of 1 n added some salt 😅
Wow ! I’m 65 and been looking for these exact texture dumplings 🥟 since I was 18 when I ate them at a friend’s house 🏠... Thank you can’t wait till morning to make this -I’ll be back ! .... 💐 2-18-2020
OMG! Thank you "Miss Sunshine" I'm 64 and embarrassed to say this is how my Mother made her dumplings and as a kid into adulthood I never paid attention to HOW she made them until I realized it wasn't from that horrid failure of a recipe on the box! This man saved my culinary life and my palate! [5/9/22].
You are a genius. I usually resort to making my own which are ok, just more work. I was reading how wonderful and fast Bisquick was so I decided to try it. I was soo upset, they all just disintegrated in the broth. The broth has to be just right so they stay whole. I could never get the broth temp just right and I gave up, till I seen your method. I believe the egg does make all the difference. Excellent advice.
Thank you larry, I can't wait to try this with my chicken and dumplings. I may have to do two batches so that one can disintegrate for the dumpling gravy.
Hey finally someone that does this like me lol and your right the receipe on the box sucks but this way they turn out amazing everytime !!!!!! Don't boil people simmer !!!!!!
Tried this for my husband and made a huge mess of it.....Larry is totally right about NOT over mixing the dough and NOT having the broth above a simmer!!!! Great Tips.....Probably would work out better if I had followed them....LOL. Thank you for the post!! Will try again soon....luckily I had crackers on hand and the dumplings didn't disintegrate in the actual soup!!! :)
LOL Thank you for the good timing. I had already decided to do soup for a dinner last night before I watched this. I didn't have a brand name product at hand, so I went with half and half self rising and low carb flour with a spoon of roast corn flour for texture and flavour. Dumplings on my turkey soup were a very good addition, they stayed together great, they cooked through, and they tasted great too. Everyone here thanks you for the inspiration!!!
Wow...Thank you Larry " GREAT IDEA " It is snowing right now in Colorado (Our 1st snow of the season ) & very cold day, so I thought what would be great to have & I chose Chicken & Dumpling's & your idea is wonderful. I am new here & yes I did subscribed.
follow the recipe for the chicken and dumplings to the T dumplings came out wonderful but I kicked it up a notch and made chicken and steak dumpling thank you so much for sharing your video I will be making this again maybe tried with shrimp
nunu magee I made dumplings with Bisquick, cream of chicken soup a little of the chicken broth and dried parsley flakes. I combined all ingredients in till I could use 2 spoons to form and drop into pot of the chicken soup and cooked for 20 min. It was my first time making them and they were devoured by my family!
Thank you for solving the mystery as to why dumplings traditionally fall apart and dissolve in the stew or soup. I will definitely try your recipe soon. Thank you for sharing. Happy New Year 2022.
I love to make bisquick dumplings...never in the past 40+ years ever had trouble with them falling apart or thickening g the broth. Yummy...Peace out..
Patti XOX - I am so worried now after watching this video. I wanted to make dumplings for the first time, but now I am concerned. It’s nice to see at least one person whose soup didn’t turn thick to paste.
Right about the boiling dumplings Larry. No Bisquick, no problem. 1 cup of flour and 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, pinch of salt. I moisten as I go when making the dumplings. I add 2/3 of the milk then add the rest if necessary. I like a dryer dough to work with. Stick the spoon into the broth then pick up the dumpling dough, it comes off the spoon easier. Great job Larry. I am a fluffy dumpling fan.
I'm going to use the bisquik dumpling recipe, some leftover codfish that I pan fried up and flaked up, and dill chopped up. So the dumpling will be the main part of the meal instead of a filler base. Thank you for the tips!
Thank you so much for this!! I like UA-cam... seeing and hearing 'it' rather than ONLY reading "it"! Going to try and make it right now! I did not have all my cook books and I did not have a dumpling recipe and there is not one on the Bisquick box ....surprisingly! Susan
Hi, I just did a side by side Larry of yours and some other woman’s recipe on UA-cam. Your right on here. Question, would a little more egg be okay for those who may like a little bit firmer? But this recipe is right on. I added fresh parsley to the batter, and onion powder. I’ll find out how they hold up overnight, separated from the soup. And your right about don’t do a bunch in the current soup. I forgot about your tip and had about less than have the soup content I started with.
Janice Esposito i tried one cup and the mix was like this cake batter. easy to thin. added more bisquick till it looked like mine usually looks, a bit stiffer
Smart I thought the same thing a big wide pan... lots of dumplings. I made some before I saw this using pancake mix Put chicken broth and cream of chicken soup season and dropped in that. You can take dumpling out and pour in your soup after skimmed. Not to waste and than add dumpling to whole soup is what I did. Besides heating my soup to boiling longer started burning my veggies. But I am going to try your way next time.
I used to use Tea-bisk, here in Canada and that disappeared, then I switched to Bisquick and have used it for years. I have never had a dumpling fall apart but I did the same thing the old recipe from Tea-bisk. I left the top on the whole time.
I have used Bisquick to make dumplings for years and all I do is add extra bisquick after I have mixed up the 2 cups of bisquick and 2/3 cup of milk. Thank you! Okay, they didn't fall apart on me this time but I won't be adding the egg next time. They made the consistency too much like cake rather than a biscuit. I needed them to be just a bit denser. Otherwise, great! Bisquick box is wrong to say to drop on a rolling boil. WRONG! Your dumplings will dissolve! If you like a chicken dumpling soup this is it! (Sometimes, I do crave the soup to be thicker, though.I know how to do that.) Thanks for the vid!
Thanx Larry :) I'll try this tonight. I'm in Fort Plain N.Y. LOVE DUMPLINGS!!! Try adding eggs to homemade macaroni and cheese also...it's delicious :)

Such a simple fix!
I sprinkled a little bit of poultry seasoning, garlic powder and onion powder in sifted bisquick.
Very tasty.
