How Our Senses Influence the Way We Perceive and Interpret Threats with Dr. Kate Truitt

  • Our senses are our first line of interaction with the world around us, acting as both messengers and interpreters of our environment even before we have developed the language to describe our experiences. This process starts with the amygdala, a key part of our brain often referred to as our survival-based friend. The amygdala is responsible for assessing threats or concerns at a significantly faster rate than our conscious thinking brain - four times faster, to be precise.
This rapid response system means that when we encounter a sensory data point, the amygdala immediately evaluates its potential threat level and influences our perception and reactions.
