- In response to a question I saw on Talkbass, I made this review of the Roland BA-330, which is a very good solution for pretty much any instrumentalist needing the flexibility to work without plug in power.
Dude! I bought this today because ur video showed me that it can handle the lows! This thing rocks!!!! Thanks for helping me make my decision to get one of these!

@ 3:12 "I believe them." I agree. I have one for acoustic guitar for weddings/events. I put the speaker on a stand up high it and it goes wide stereo spread with the reverb for guitar. I can accommodate 200 people as background guitar music for ceremony with a mic also for officiate, and1 hour cocktail hour guitar music while the crowd is pretty loud chatting away. Then go to a friends house and play techno house music through the aux input for a few hours at a decent level, with the master bass knob 90% up for a fuller bass sound, all on the same batteries. Pretty amazing. I don't have to bring along a separate reverb pedal anymore, which is great. I also have two battery cartridges, so one as a back up on the spot if I want to go even longer. This is a great PA speaker all around and glad I got it. This video may have something to do with my purchase :) Thanks!
Many thanks for posting this review. I have been using this PA for nursing home gigs for a while. It has served well to support guitar and vocals. Also does a nice job with backing tracks. A few years ago I bought a electro-harmonics Bass9 pedal. That allows any guitar to down shift octaves, thereby sounding bass notes. Additionally, you can split the tones where the lower strings play bass, while still being able to simultaneously play lead or chords on the top strings. This eliminates the need for a bass player. I was concerned about sending bass tones to a PA like this until I saw your review! Since I have several songs where I do finger picking, this setup is awesome!

I hope you're well.. soooo i have a question.. actually some questions .. i dont know if you can help me.. i have to buy a battery PA with all ranges cause Im planning to Sing and play Acoustic guitar.. but as well do some voice with backing tracks..(Karaoke type) .. well i think the sound of BA330 its amazing but its the most high price equipment that i saw.. and it has a few years since its release.. otherway there is the Bose S1Pro System.. wich is cheapper.. Im fighting between these 2.. can you help ? I could use some advice.. thanks man.. great videos.. 🙏

I have a Pignose 30 with 2 x 6v Lead/Acid batteries inside.
It's pretty good with it's single 8" speaker but it has less lows than that BA-330 judging from your video.
I actually gigged once at a band competition due to the last minute nature of the circumstances.
Folk rock, drums bass, acc guitar and fiddle.
We didn't win but they created a special category for us and gave us a prize anyway ... which was nice. ;^)
KozmykJ these are extremely useful amps/PA’s. Pig noses are fine for guitar, but yeah, I’d doubt you’d get anything resembling lows from it. Sometimes that doesn’t matter, sounds like you’ve made it work. The Behringer MPA40 BT Is actually a fabulous sounding SLA battery micro PA that handles bass very well, the problem is, just one of them is not really loud enough to compete with drums, and maddeningly, they don’t have a line out so you can’t link them together. I don’t know what the hell Behringer was thinking with that move, since you could buy 3 of them for the price of one of these Rolands.
Ummm not a little baby Pignose . I have the Pignose Hog 30. I believe it is intended for Bass guitar, though it works quite well for guitar and keyboard also. Or as well as a straight solid state amp can be expected to.

KozmykJ yep I looked at it from your first comment, I bet they’re actually pretty good for acoustic guitar, but several of the comments from bass players mentioned rattles etc. if pushed at all, and lack of low end. They do get good reviews from people looking for an acoustic bass sound, I’d like to compare it with the Behringer I mentioned above because it puts out KILLER acoustic bass tone, check out my Ohana bass uke review to hear it in action.

Yeah. I got the Pignose Hog30 for a quiet practise amp or for writing with acoustic players.
The gig was a last resort and surprisingly it held together. I was playing fretted but with a fretless type of mid tone so the low bass response wasn't a problem in that situation.
The batteries seem to go for days. No rattles in mine by the way.
I also discovered that with the funk/bright switch on it's takes pedals for 6 string electric quite well too.

I don't think it's any kind of match for those modern PA/FRFR units Roland or Behringer.
I only mentioned it because it has proved itself more useful than I ever though it would be.
Great video. 8’m planning on doing gigs on our Main St. I’ll be using my iPad and the LiveTrax app to run my backing track recordings. I’ll be using a wide range of guitars as well as a Roland GR55.
I was wondering if you’ve used different brands/types of rechargeable batteries and which you have found to be the best.

The thing with the ba330 (I own one too) is that you have to go a few metres away to get the "right" sound. What I really enjoy with this unit is that it throws the sound everywhere and very far. You basically hear the same thing at almost the same volume at a 20 metres or a 10 metres distance. When you go velow 3-4 metres it actually sounds lower and not so well defined. I guess it's the ideal busking amp, because although it can't blow your eardrums out like the Street EX, it shoots out sound at the same level at a big area. Everyone will hear you, it sounds nice and clean. Itøs a gentlemans amp!
Agreed. It's not an amp for close-miking in a studio, that's for sure, but it projects well. Very efficient speakers, it's pretty stunning how much louder it is in front of the PA than behind it.
If you stand too close to any bass speaker you can't here the whole wave form
Hi Nick, I hear what you're saying, I'm going to be doing some outdoor stuff where I sing to recorded tracts, and when I can't use my AC powered set up I am going to use the Roland 330, Like you I'm going to purchase 2 units and link them together, Like you said for this type of set up you can't beat this, I've got a bunch of stuff on youtube under Eddie Lanzarin, Feel free to check them out, Thank's again for your demonstration and I totally agree with your satisfaction.
Eddie Lanzarin yes, for vocals along with recorded tracks I can't think of a better battery powered system than a pair (or more) of these. The Anchor systems can get blaring louder, but without a mixer they sound awful, and even with a mixer they still don't sound very good.. The Rolands have a simple, but good sounding mixer built right in.
Sounds pretty detailed - I don't mean the narrative, but the sound replication out of the speaker. This would be very nice instead of the cheaper mono units by Kam and QTX etc, but for the obvious fiscal drawback! But thanks, worth hearing.
sleekitwan totally depends on the need. I also have the behringer MPA40BT, in fact it’s the Bluetooth speaker we’re using at a party as I write this. It’s a fantastic speaker for the price. But for a bass instrument, only useful for the very smallest gigs or rehearsals.
Do you have it turned up to max? I have my inputs and output at 12 and my moog will make the speakers crackle during ambient sets. Nice vid!
Zodiac Gallery no, and I don’t generally use any equipment maxed out all the way. Like any pro audio equipment, you have to judge how much the amp/speaker can take based on sound. I’m sure an active synthesizer has more output than a passive bass or guitar, low frequencies require more energy than high, among many other factors. If the speaker is clipping, roll it back or risk permanent damage, there’s no way around that. Also note, for bigger gigs I use 2 (or more).
The guitars get away with that because it's a peak thing - the peak comes and goes, but the keyboard may well be considered capable of 'infinite sustain', and the speaker gets no time to settle back down. If anything was going to show up limits, it would be a keyboard. But, as the man says, you just don't max it out, so keep clear of the limits. Just my view, the guitar peak comes and goes pretty fast, different kind of treatment the speakers get.
Also, you might be overdriving the input... Not sure if the amp has input meters?
Craig Packer agreed. If you turn your active instrument up too loud, you could definitely overdrive the preamp. The BA-330 has mic/instrument level switches on the first 2 inputs, but there are no meters or lights to indicate level. I notice a lot of people commenting on issues that are possibly just improper gain staging, sounds like a good idea for an instructional video...
Is there like an older and newer model because on some models the logo is greyer and on other models it’s whiter
I own one also and if my memory serves right it is 30 watts, When you combine the two does it boost the watts to 60?

Have you tried the Bose s1 pro? I tried it on double bass for a few tunes a while back (someone had it on a gig). the sound was good with decent bottom end but not a whole lot of volume. Wondering if you have compared it with the roland.
Mark Howard I haven’t, but they are intriguing. This is not a popular opinion, but I really like the Bose L1 compact on my electric upright bass for lightly amplified gigs. Of course, that isn’t battery powered. Bass instruments need to push a lot of air, so the more speaker surface area, or more efficient the system is, the better. The L1 compact is very efficient with its mid range speakers and subwoofer, these Rolands have quite a bit of surface area with the speaker cones. I have my doubts the tiny surface area of the Bose would be very useful if you’re just playing bass. That said, a pair of the S-1 cost as much as a pair of Roland‘s, I really would like to give them a try. no need for them at the moment, but I’m not getting any younger, light weight Bose gear is always attractive :-)
@@NickWeissMusic thanks for the reply. Yeh, not much volume in the S 1 but the sound was very true and had warm bottom end. Tried the Roland micro cube? I'm looking for something really portable as I occasionally do acoustic gigs in shopping centres where there is often no access to power. i just need a bit of extra boost.
Mark Howard the micro cube won’t do it, those are voiced for guitars, very mid heavy. I’d look into the Behringer mpa40-bt, it’s a great sounding, very inexpensive, small speaker, but I’m not sure it would give any more volume than the Bose. Behringer does make bigger portable models too, anyway you look at it, you’re spending a lot less money. I use the MPA 40 BT for acoustic volume gigs and it’s very small, might be what you’re looking for.

@@NickWeissMusic do you tried this behringer with UB or bass? I have Stagg EUB, Squier Bass VI and eastern europe made double bass from 70s. Only Squier sounds good with this behringer - both double basses sounds WERY "farty", it just cant handle lows. And surprise - Roland Bass Cube RX have this problem too: it cant handle B, it cant handle active pickups. Roland BA-330 is the only way for me. Best volume/lows solution on market except maby Phil Jones Briefcase.
Hey man, my wife uses groove boxes mc707 101 mocrofreak vt4 for her vocals she runs through her 707. I usually play acoustic through PA or electric through JC40. We have been looking at the column stick PAs. But do this can handle your bass, and doesnt fart out. Do you think 2 of these would be a good PA choice for a duo like us? We dont get too heavy like boom bap 808 floor rattle stuff, but we do need nice clear low end, for her synths and groove boxes, guitar electric or acoustic and 2 vocals. Does it have the low end to have some clear punch in a bar or coffee shop stuff like that? They could make great speakers at home for the TV as well I bet.
I have Bose towers too, and would much rather use them than these roland speakers when possible. The Rolands are great for battery power situations though. They would be plenty for a coffehouse, but they don't have dedicated subwoofers like most towers do, and they don't have a "hi-fi" sound in comparison. I'd say it depends on how you're performing. If you're mostly busking and can take advantage of the battery feature, the Rolands would be a good first choice. For most people, these are a good second rig to use when needed, and give you a lot of flexibility, but I have better stuff to use if power is available. If I were playing in bars and coffehouses I'd go with a small tower myself.
@@NickWeissMusic Thak you very much, after some research, I took the hit and invested in two JBL PRX one.. That should give us plenty of headroom. I wish Roland would get in the column array market. They could easily crush the competition.
If you can make it sound this good with a bass guitar plugged in, it doesn’t take a whole lot of imagination for me to picture how good it could sound in the application I would use it for if I got one, which is plugging my electric guitar multi-effects processor & a synthesizer into the stereo inputs and my microphone into one of the XLR inputs.
The word is, this PA is intended for presenting to an audience of 80. I suspect it could reach more people than that.
ShreadTheWeapon I can and do use it for that application, far more than I use it for bass in fact. Just yesterday I played background music at a wedding of 150 guests with no problem, with my TC vocal and guitar processor, and my second BA330for the ceremony. I did use a behringer mpa40bt to augment the sound for the ceremony, so it was nice and even throughout the audience. I can’t speak highly enough for their clarity and flexibility.

During this demonstration, you were simply using the lower BA as a slave. Have you ever attempted to insert instruments or vocals into all eight channels?
I have done something like that before, they have an ingenious stereo link mode. It requires two 1/4" cables to do it, but you can share the 8 total channels between the two units. I can't say I've needed to use all the channels, but this setup great when you have 2 players on a spread out stage, or just want stereo for some reason, like you like unnecessary phase issues, lol. FYI, channels 1 and 2 are higher gain and more flexible than channels 3 and 4, which are better suited for line level inputs.
I just bought a used one. Does it hiss more than you would like? I think i hear some, but just want to make sure that its not just mine thats hissing
Grant "Funky" Frabe yes, they hiss far too much to be useful in a studio, but for live sound it’s not an issue.

The beauty of the BA 330 is that it has many inputs and outputs. Inputs 1 and 2 have the most features so I will use one of those especially when plugging in a single instrument. Since my bass signal is mono, I simply run the line out from one BA 330 into a channel strip on the other, a 1/4 patch cord is all that’s needed. The stereo link feature is cool, but not useful with a single mono source.

I wish I could really hear the BASS response on this video. Did you have the "LOW" all the way up on the Master EQ? Is it enough? I don't need a lot of bass in what I am doing, just want to know that it's audible as far as feeling the bass goes. Thanks!
Sunscribes what you're hearing it's a pretty accurate recording of what you'll get, if you're listening through headphones or a decent computer system with a subwoofer. Keep in mind UA-cam compresses and loses sound quality, but this isn't a bad representation of the live sound, it's recorded on a zoom camera/audio recorder about 10 feet away. It's punchy and pleasant, but you shouldn't expect to feel earth shaking bass, it is powered by 16 AA batteries after all. If you really need a full bass amp experience, you'll need a generator and a bass amp, and at that point you'd be playing loud enough to drown out the generator anyway. No I did not crank the low eq on the speaker, that would probably cause limiting from the Roland's. Can you tell me what specifically you'd want to use these for?

it's decent! I have a BSX electric upright, does a fine job with it. There's no substitute for speaker surface area, the 4 speakers move enough air to do justice. I still know of no other battery powered amp that does better with bass.
How do you have the bass connected? There isn't a 1/4" input is there?
epb111 yes there are actually more 1/4” than xlr inputs. This is 1/4” direct to the PA, no outboard preamp.
I’ve been busking now for two years. My playing times range from an hour to two. I’m two years using my rechargeables. I need to find out if the battery I use for my Roland GR55 can be used for my Roland Cube Street Ex. I use the same battery for my Digitech RP1000.
As far as I know the cube street uses AA batteries too, they used to anyway, I bought two of them over the years. It’s not a full range PA speaker though, if you use non-guitar effects and sounds and vocals, it’s really not the best amp to use for that. It’s got whizzer cones in it, not true tweeters, it’s voiced and mainly intended for electric guitar. If you don’t mind everything sounding like it comes from a guitar amp, go for it. I still have one, would use it in a pinch.
What battery do you use for your GR 55? I have a Godin synth access guitar and have never gotten a synth.
@@NickWeissMusic First...yes it does us AA batts. But I am wondering, if the battery pack I use to power my Roland GR55 and DIgitech RP1000 will work. I'll try it tomorrow. IF it doesn't, the AAs will be fine.
As for the Roland amp...you are right...other than guitar, it SUCKS!!. Using different effects boards requires different setting for each...and I have arrived at some great guitar tones. AND....I have been able to compensate wonderfully with my backing tracks. The problem I encountered was a total lack of bottom end. I tried swapping out speakers as MR. PianoMan did but I found no improvement. My backing tracks are mixed very well on everything possible except the Roland EX amp. So I have used a OS DAW's eq on my iPad to boost the bottom and also any other anomalies. I can honestly say that now, the backing tracks sound great.
SInce I am doing jazz, bluesrock and new age, the amp suffices. I am happy with its limitations. And its compact.
I think the BA330 is excellent. It’s not very sexy. It’s a Roland. No sleek line array or subwoofer, but this is a surprisingly nice sounding compact unit. I own one and I want something “better”, but it’s not that easy or cheap to beat this unit.
It takes 2 Bose s1’s to get “better” than one Ba330 imo. The Bose do sound more refined, but the Rolands still sound good enough, and SPL the ba330 puts out still makes them very useful. Plus, $1200 for a pair of Bose vs $769 for the BA330 is a pretty big swing. I own a pair of both and still bring the BA330 around when I’m not sure the Bose will be loud enough. It is hilarious that there’s still no Bluetooth on the BA330, but you gotta love Roland for sticking with what works.
I'm trying to decide bwtween this and the roland street cube EX, the street cube seems to lack in the bass department from reviews i've seen so far, do you think this would be better? i just need something to play backing tracks while i play electric guitar over it. I already have my battery amp modeler sorted so the street cube inbuilt amps are not something i'd use. Does anyone know if this has more bass frequencies than the street cube?
Brummie Comedy I own and like the cube street as well, but the BA 330 is in a different league- price, sound, and size wise. The BA 330 is a full range PA which will do much more justice to backing tracks. The cube street is tuned specifically as a guitar amp, and has more guitar amp features, but has the boxy, nasally sound of a guitar amp with backing tracks. It will work, but the sound quality of the BA 330 is far superior overall. Depends if you want more onboard flexibility of guitar tone (Cube Street is far more guitar oriented) or best overall tone, especially for an acoustic instrument (BA-330 by a mile). Good luck, they’re both good pieces of gear.

Hi mate I am looking for an acoustic guitar amp for busking. Is this unit good enough for busking and does it have quality sound for both vocal and guitar?
It’s very good for both, not as refined sounding as Bose S1, but much more powerful and versatile. If you could only have one, I’d still go BA330. It takes 2 s1’s to get the same SPL.

how many hours of play can you get from just one of these? i need it last 8-10 hours
I bet you could get 8-10 hours out of one set of batteries, Roland says up to 15 hours, I assume that's at low volume. But the best thing about these is you only need to bring extra AA batteries! I use Eneloop rechargeables and haven't bought new batteries for 5 years, but I only use them 1-2 hours at a time.
@@NickWeissMusic thanks. i'm going to check one of these out for sale nearby and there's a bass player in my city who busks every day i've never even noticed what amp he uses, upon closer inspection it's a BA330. the only problem is, i have a vox vx50ba bass amp which is awesome volume, size and weight for busking BUT i need a at least 60AH 12v lithium ion battery to get 8-10 hours of play out of it and they batteries will cost nearly 600$

Definitely not the case! Speaker size never matters more than the design of the speaker and amplifier system. In bass cabinets, several small speakers often actually produce punchier, tubbier bass than one large speaker. The 8X4" speakers used here, have just a little less surface area that a 2X12" speaker, and are designed to be full range, so they do the low end justice. Phil Jones Bass actually uses 5" speakers almost exclusively on their cabinets. 4X10" and 8X10" cabs have been used by Ampeg for decades on their flagship rigs. In the case of this setup, it sounds pretty darn good, I think the audio of this video is good enough to display that, listen through good speakers or headphones if you haven't already. I would never use these for a very loud gig, I have a couple Bag End 15's for those ;) But at moderate volume, they work great for bass.
The total surface-area of all the speakers is important, as is porting, for bass response. Radius squared so the 4x 6.5" in one box can be equivalent to a little more than a 1x12" box.

I own 4 of these; I bought my first one over 10 years ago. I have two that I leave at home on Cape Cod. Two I have in Fort Myers. My wife and I do events that cover 75 to 125 or so. Inside or outside and they do a very nice job. I think they have a great sound, vocals sound terrific, as well as instruments & backing tacks. Lately, I've had an issue that I could use some help problem solving. I'm having a hard time sorting out if it's user error (me); the Roland or cables. the problem I have is that I get some scratchy sound out of one of my speakers after maybe playing for 1/2 hour or so and and then it shuts off. Has anyone out there experienced anything like that? Thanks in advance for any help that comes my way.
I have had a channel strip go bad on one of mine, but no shutdown issues. I have Bose s1's now that sound a lot better overall, but aren't near as powerful as the Rolands, and couldn't possibly function as well as a bass amp. So I still keep the Rolands for when I need extra reinforcement. The preamps are much better on the Bose, but if I had about $600 and could only buy one unit, I'd still go with the Roland, double the channels and greater sound pressure.

@@DAVID_PIANISTA_TELFORD_PA to be honest, probably not. I find Roland keyboard amps generally sound good, with a big low end, this BA-330 probably wouldn’t be an improvement, likely a downgrade. If you want portable, and you want to go less expensive, I’ve found the Behringer MPA 200BT portable PA’s to sound pretty darn good. Haven’t tried on keyboard, but they sound good playing back music, they use older SLAB battery technology so they’re heavier, but a really good portable budget speaker.

@@DAVID_PIANISTA_TELFORD_PA EV makes some great speakers, depends which specific ones you have though, some of the lower end ones are pretty wimpy. Behringer is generally not a step up from EV, but its portability and price is great.

Joseph Barra yes... but that begs the question, why? To use 2 different basses to switch between easily, sure, this would do that very well. But To use 2 basses at the same time would be a stretch.
Nick Weiss I was looking for something so my dad and I (we both play bass together) could play outside together without having to drag an extension cord through my yard. I didn’t realize that this is way higher end than anything we would need. Would you recommend something at the lower end that you think would also be sufficient for just playing around outside?
Joseph Barra ah, yes, the Behringer MPA40BT is under $200 and sounds fantastic, has 2 inputs, battery powered (needs to plug in to charge), and you can play with backing tracks via Bluetooth if you want too. It’s a great little PA, they make a larger 200W version too which costs a lot less than the Rolands, I’m going to have to give those a look.

May be OK for leccy bass low b but cannot take a 4 string double bass (either using a piezo or mag pickup (better with mag but still cannot handle anything below an open A string (volume at 50%))). Battery life is awesome but I'm going to have to buy something else which is an expensive shame. Double bass players try before you buy!!!!

How many people can you reach with two ba330 ?
I've used a pair as a vocal and guitar PA for weddings for up to 200 guests, but as a bass amp, I would only used it in a situation where there's no power available. I don't really think in terms of "how many people" in this case, more like, what are you mixing with? A pair of Ba330's would mix favorably with small battery powered guitar amps and moderate acoustic drumming, like a busking situation, small street festival/farmers' market stage, etc. If you're miking the drums, this setup wouldn't be able to compete, but then you'd hopefully have mains power for a true bass amp.

So maybe buying a second ba 330 is the best idea :)
@@melanieschluter360 I'll use a single one for up to 100, and a pair for up to 200. A single one can put out a lot of guitar and vocals, but it's more pleasing , less feedback issues, etc, if it's spread out more widely with 2. If you don't have them already, You'll want speaker stands to help the sound carry as well, on the ground I'll use one for up to 75 guests or so., depends how close to the ocean, street, etc. I have to set up.

Nedjo Nedjo 30 Watts. I don’t worry much about Watt numbers though, as far as instrument amps go Watt numbers are more useful as a size guideline than a true measurement of loudness or headroom. The speakers in these Rolands are incredibly efficient and directional. Together these 2 amps are supposedly 60 watts, but I can almost guarantee they’ll be as loud, and sound fuller, than a 100W plug in amp. I’d like to test it... if anyone in San Diego has 100 W or so bass amp they could bring over to my studio, we can do a shoot out!

That's another way to do it, I don't own a double 4 but I have tried them at NAMM. I like Phil Jones gear, but I'll bet outdoors without a wall behind it, this Roland is louder and has more apparent low end than the double 4, and handles low B's better. It's just a question of moving more air. Roland speakers are very good and efficient, and 4x5" cones and a larger enclosure are obviously going to have an easier time than 2x4." If you're in San Diego, bring the double 4 over, would love to compare!
Nick, for me, size is a big issue as I get to gigs on public transportation. I can carry the double four with battery in a camera bag. I like the way The Roland sounds though (more speakers)and the battery thing is cool.

Mario Grillo agreed, for portability, there is literally nothing on the market like the double 4. I looked long and hard at the briefcase a decade or so ago, I couldn't pull the trigger because even though it sounds great, it just doesn't push out the lows and low mids I want. BTW they weigh the same as the Roland, probably more with battery, I wouldn't want to bump around the city/subway with either without a hand cart. Phil Jones makes great studio quality gear, I just haven't found them to be capable of pushing bass frequencies as easily as the Roland does for the outdoor weddings/boat gigs I do.
Yeah, the bass briefcase isn't really portable for the city-I had to have it always on a cart even on the subway.With the battery it is heavy. Too bad Phil didn't make something between the briefcase and the double four. That, I would have wanted.There was something he talked about that he called "OTG"-off the grid, but I don't know if that is still going to happen.

It’s all about convenience and battery power. I wouldn’t recommend it if you don’t need it, I work in San Diego so there are a lot of outdoor and beach events, portability and alternative power are a big deal for me.
