  • Recently I had a problem with my Hornby BR Standard 4MT 75071, it was a poor runner, it would refuse to move in reverse and would instead make an awful grinding noise. One day whilst running the model, it stopped working all together, upon removing the body and refitting it back on, it suddenly started working again with no explanation, weird. However a short time later (a week or so), the model again stopped working, whilst removing the body, the valve gear decided to break. Also upon inspection it appeared that the rear motor retainer on the chassis is suffering from mazak rot quite badly.
As there isn't anything much I can do, and I doubt I can get it repaired as specific spare parts I'd need aren't available, I decided to withdraw this model from service. I instead ended up buying another one, this time 75072 and this model and the other Hornby Standard 4MTs aren't suffers of the dreaded mazak rot, I suspect the mazak rot possible accounts for the poor running I experienced with 75071.

I decided to do a running session video with this replacement model, which features the model running on the layout hauling various different trains.

Such a shame when Mazark rot takes one of our locos, luckily though it hasn’t happened to me and hopefully never will, while I do say that though I have had a minor experience of it with a hornby class 50 but luckily it seemed to be isolated to some specific parts on that model and the rest wasn’t affected, luckily I did get some replacement 3D printed parts for it as well, great running session here Peter, good to see you could get a replacement model that isn’t affected.

Cheers David mate, not the first time I've had a loco suffer from mazak rot, had a Hornby 31 that suffered from it, needless to say that its no longer here. A pity indeed

Wallsrail ua-cam.com/video/Nwrbkozq2OU/v-deo.html has a whole playlist on repairing mazak rot locos.

Nothing on repairing the 4MT though, also need the skills to do which isn't something I have ir I woukd be good at unfortunately. If I could repair the rot, I'd still need to repair the valve gear which can't be sourced as spares
