@@friedrichhayek4862 The comment was made 1 year ago thank you but yeah. You ARE right just that a beam of this size would need titanic contraptions and timings.
pretty much, having installed one into a ship and i can safely say that's exactly what happens, small and mid-size large grid ships do not last long at all in front of it, it's basically the space engineers equivalent of the wave motion gun from space battleship yamato. just for shits n' giggles i made a heavy armor target about 75 layers thick and my ion cannon (with 16 capacitors) punched straight through.
It's fitting that it takes such a long time because of how OP it is. It would be awesome to put it on a ship, and have it so when it's fully charged, you can move it out of the ship via a bay door, aim and fire, and then retract it back in before someone can get a clean shot at it.
You can setup a rotor based firing mechanism fairly easily aswell. Seems considerably more stable than a piston based one. I would take a pic of my setup but I'm away from my main pc atm.
@@LoRdLoSs1337 Actually I tried that and it kept destroying one of the combiners. I had a 4 combiner setup with one on the front corner rotate upward 90degrees in order to fire. But if you can find a way to fix that system let me know! :)
@Raganui If you use the laser splitter as the firing mechanism, you can set it so that it receives a beam from the side and launches it backwards into the loop of combiners. In other words, make a square with the splitter as one of the corners with the front arrow pointing outward and the back-end pointing into the loop and receiving the laser from the left or right side. Set the ratio to 100% so it launches it backwards to charge up. Then when ready to fire, turn it off and the entire beam should come out without using rotors or pistons. Have fun! :) PS: Ion System doesn't have a splitter block yet. Cross your fingers the mod author makes it sooner.
Ive tested both lasers and ions myself, and it depends how much power the shield has, a low power shield will get ripped right through, decent power will stop a laser pulse, but not much else (will reduce the damage from ion noticeably though ) and higher power can block an ion pulse entirely, and can if the power source is maintained, appears to be able to block a continuous laser indefinitely (i powered the shield with a 100x arc reactor for that test, and left a 100% efficient laser on it for 20 minutes without an issue )
Wrong, it does ALOT of damage to voxel. Laser holes can be from 1 to 4 blocks wide and go up to 4km down, a ION hole can be as wide as 20 blocks and if you are thorough you can dig a 30km path into a planet
personally.. i think thats a really impractical design.. you should make a static chargeup system which redirects the beam to the actual "direction-giver-rotor-platform" which stays quite small... smaller target for the enemy and less problems with the gravity :D - btw.. did you tried the mod in multiplayer? because the shop-desc says something like "on your own risk"
well it's extremely dependent on power if you have a lot of power it is a good idea but if your subsisting off of wind and solar with hydrogen you probably won't have enough power to keep the fence up. at that point it would be better to just use turrets which are cheap on energy just not on ammo. but you can find the stuff to make ammo on planet but you can't find uranium.
I still prefer the Welder defense against wolves. Though, has been a while since I've used wolves as they kept glitching and just staying in one spot forever.
few questions, how long did the last iteration of the big cannon take to charge, and how many beam generators did you use, because that could be perfect as an orbital cannon.
New blocks? Damn, just got done using this to make my main weapon on my battlestation. Also, a charged Ion Beam lasts longer if the target is thick enough. @@gozzilla177 It's pretty fun but yea may not be good for a server unless some limits are put in place. I love this mod! Finally a weapon system that you can tinker with, beside missiles. But it needs balancing! You NEED shield's or it will evaporate everything in it's path. If you go for power efficiency with the ion cannon build, the defender needs to invest a lot more energy to defend against it.
You could build a big ship with an additional combiner outside the loop which can be tilted by rotors so that an ion beam can be easily aimed by a turet script.
I ran some tests over the weekend and 5 Laser emitters takes 20 seconds per capacitor block to charge said block. i don't remember my numbers for the ion laser.
In term of ease of use? The atlas laser. As it is a glorified laser pointer that is very easy to instal on a ship. Most powerful? Well... let's day a decent 2cm ION can overload a station shield and then proceed to melt 1km of terrain and remove the station form existence
Weaksauce compared to the one i built. I actually accidentaly gave it the ability to fire at max power forever due to the ammount of ion generators and capacitors. Downside is that it's not mobile at all.
@@yawnos Firstly it's already in space. Secondly, you don't understand, it needs an insane ammount of thrusters in order to get anywhere. It's not suited to be a ship's spinal weapon, it's better suited to a battle station.

Doesn't work. Laser gets destructive at 10 blocks, ion at 40 blocks if I remember it right. That means beyond that distance you can't redirect the beam, it will just destroy the block.

Add an aiming laser so you can actually hit stuff with some resemblance of accuracy.
Semblance of accuracy
there are turret scripts that are even more accurate than that
Or a laser cannon which accepts a laser through the bottom
So we could just have a simple low power laser always on for aim then redirect the beam into it.
Easy
The military uses tracer rounds for their bunker busters so as to know where the shot is going to land before using the single use weapon.
