Join us on a nostalgic journey as we bid farewell to an iconic part of music culture - Sam Ash Music Stores. In this video, we delve into the rich history of this beloved chain, tracing its roots and impact on musicians and enthusiasts alike. From humble beginnings to becoming a cornerstone of the music retail landscape, Sam Ash has left an indelible mark on the industry.
But the journey doesn't end there. We take you inside one of the last remaining Sam Ash locations in Madison, Tennessee, offering an exclusive glimpse into the heart of this storied institution. From rows of gleaming instruments to the bustling atmosphere of musicians coming together, we capture the essence of what made Sam Ash special. I also get into why I had stopped shopping at the iconic retail store.
As we say goodbye to this chapter in music history, let's celebrate the legacy of Sam Ash Music Stores and the countless memories they've provided to generations of musicians. Join us in honoring their contribution to the world of music.

I went to Sam Ash a few years ago to check out a Helix. I ask the guy if they had a demo setup with one. He said “not really”. I asked him “how do people know if they want one?”. He said, “they watch UA-cam videos”.
I never went back.
That's funny. I do tend to watch UA-cam videos but certainly he should have offered to let you try it. The Sam Ash here had a display with the Helix when it came out.
I went to my Local Sam Ash store in San Antonio & the deals on the wall were only 5% off. However, online they were already discounting the demo guitars (on the wall) by 10% & if you chatted online they told you they were giving an additional 15% off. By having that info with me I was able to buy a Martin 000-16 Streetmaster with VTS (torrefied) Adirondack spruce top for $1529 (normally retailing for $1999). I was happy with that deal as it was less than I could find the guitar for used on Reverb for an American Made Martin. It’s a great guitar & a good buy so I was happy. I’ll miss having them around. My advice is check online first then print out the info & take it with you & they will honor the price as they did for me.
That is a good deal! Thanks for the info!
You can always tell an old circuit city by the entrance that looks like a plug.
lol
The Sam Ash by me was always a ghost town. I'm surprised that the location lasted this long.
I hear ya!
Living In L.A , I Was In Las Vegas Last Week And Checked Out Sam Ash , Which There Is Only The One On Maryland Pkwy , The Store Looked Fully Stocked , But There Selling Everything , Including Fixtures Some One Bought A Trash Can , I Thought I Would Never See Such A Thing At A Music Store ? Everything Was Only 10% Off, I Was Thinking About Buying A Acoustic Guitar , Its Was Around $700 , With Only 10% Off And It Didn`t Come With A Case . After Watching Your Very Informative Video , Your Right This Going Out Of Business Sale Should Be On A Much Grander Scale, Were Prices Are Concerned, They Can Keep It. I Did Buy 8 Packs Of Strings .One Thing For Me Is True Sam Ash Had Good Customer Service Were As Guitar Center Had Piss Poor Service , To None At All, I Personally Will Never Shop At Guitar Center, Sad To See Sam Ash Go After A 100 Years.
Wow that is incredible. Can't believe they are still sitting at 10%. That's absolutely insane. Guitar Center is hit or miss, as with any stores it helps if you got a guy who works there that you trust. Best to you bro, keep rockin'.
I bought my Martin 00028 from Sam Ash on 48 st. Exactly 50 years ago this month. $375 + 125 for the case. I will die with it
Wow I bet it sounds incredible and you gotta love the prices back then. Enjoy that axe!
Nabbed a Les Paul Classic 2 weeks ago for $1550 in Philadelphia.
Wow now that’s a good deal! How do you like it?
About three years ago I went into Sam Ash in Orlando, FL on Colonial Drive. I saw a new Gibson ES-335 for $2500 that I wanted. It was hanging on the wall behind a counter. I stood for several minutes looking it over, and all the sales people were at the next counter over, maybe 20 feet. Nobody came over, so I went around the store looking at different things, no sales help still. Made my way back to the ES-335 and stood in front of it for several minutes again. Still no sales people came over. I left.
Yeah customer service seems to be a thing of the past.
Just got my dream Taylor (new 912ce Builders Edition) for 43% off. That guitar retails at $5,999 and got it via their reverb store at almost half price. Reverb gives you an option to make offers and counter offers. After an aggressive counteroffer, I got that amazing discount. I can sell it right away and make over 2k profit….but I may just keep it
Wow very cool! Good on you!
In the days before the announcement, online was 15% off entire inventory, even on sale items.
The day the news hit, the 15% off disappeared online and only a very few items were on sale and no blowout pricing. Makes no sense. Sounds like corporate brought in a liquidator firm to sell off inventory. This is how they operate. Agreed, though, 5% and even 10% off is a joke.
Wow did not know that. It's just kind of bone headed. I don't get that at all.
Someone at local shop said more or less that "....the bank is running things and we can't discount more. Check back..." when I made an offer on a guitar with a bit of "shop wear..."
That makes sense. Bank wants to make some bucks. @@ratwynd
Based off your tasty recommendation, I purchased a very brutal pod express. I'm diggin this crazy little unit. I got a great deal on it as well with my points at MF, plus they were running a special if I bought it, I'd get 2449 pts (24.49$). Sam Ash is in dream about all that :)
Wow very cool! I’m glad you like it! It’s still the unit I use almost every day.
There is a store in NYC named Going Out of Business. It's been around for decades.
That’s a good one!
i was in San Antonio Texas location, there was nothing worth buying at basically retail prices. i was ready to drop 1-2k on some deep discount, nada
Yeah it's crazy.
That's too bad. Visited FL over 20 years ago and bought the 50th Ann Epiphone LP Custom from Samash Clearwater, and had it shipped home. Still have it. Just went briefly on Samash website and looks like Michael Kelly stuff is discounted. House brand, right? We had a Daddy's Junky Music nearby many years ago- was sad when they went under.
I loved Daddy's Junky Music bought my first Mesa Stack there eons ago. The location across from Berklee. It will be interesting to see where all this is headed.
That candy apple red WG is so sick, been searching for it and now even one inflates the price of it, too bad about Sam Ash, loved their Long Island stores, we had 3 of them to hang out in and play with the gear
Yeah the candy apple red WG is such a cool color. Maybe they will reissue it? Sam Ash is gonna be missed.
@@badbrad For me will def be missed, also love the candy apple sparkle ESP Eclipse
@@brokenchains I have not see that ESP....
Every time I've gone into a SA store I'm always disappointed and say to my self "why do I keep wasting my time here" I wont miss the place.
Same for me. It just became a place I didn’t want to shop at.
At the start of the bankruptcy they had the Fender P Bass at 849.00 -5% when the new Fender MAP for player series is $799.99
Hard to feel bad for them when they weren’t managing their prices.
Sweetwater never gives a discount either. I've tried, they wouldn't even match competitors prices
Try connecting with a rep. Build a relationship I find that sometimes they will give a discount.
Jeff, nothing could be further from the truth. My last purchase I bought 2 Epiphone inspired by Gibson LP's (50's) A Gold Top and a Vintage Burst. I called in during Gear Fest. The guitars each listed on their site for $699.00 per guitar. I asked the guy who answered what he could get them to me for. $519.99 per along with free shipping. That was on a Friday. I had my 2 new Epi's on Saturday morning. That's a huge discount on a very decent guitar.
Yeah they will send you an open box guitar one that someone has returned.
@@marksanders8066 wrong again, they sell all returns as "demos" and have for as long as they've been in business. You don't become the number 1 seller of gear in the country by pulling fast ones on your customers.
At Vegas store today only 5 percent
Yeah must be an edict from corporate to try and stop the bleeding but reality is it’s just not incentive enough for me.
@@badbrad totally agree
Yeah, but it's too early. Go back in a month or 2. Selection will be sparse but you might find a good deal on stuff nobody wants.
@@villageidiot9867 thanks for the advice, appreciate it
yes indeed....great deals on stuff I don't want or need. @@villageidiot9867
Corner music is were I can deal.
Great store!
I just checked my local store listings on the internet.... Pretty much nothing to see as a deal. Perhaps they will at some point. It all seems very disconnected and surreal.
Absolutely.
Ontario mills had the best sam ash music store in the IE years ago it was the only place to go to play any guitar other than squire/fender epiphine/gibson and the same SS amps they have everywhere fender marshal orange. They started locking guitars to the wall so you had to beg a sales rep to demo anything cool and they will have to get a ladder and spend 10 minutes finding the keys and the guitar wont be in tune or have a trem bar attatched just janky shit.
Man the stories like yours are an eye opener of what not to do when you run a music store.
Going out with the same crappy policies that sunk 'em in the first place.
You could say so.
Sign of the times... Younger people not interested in music, too busy with Facebook.
It sure doesn't help.
Says something when you are even bad at going out of business.
Yeah I kinda of have to agree.
Most of their price drops do nothing but meet everyone elses prices. Sam Ash even sucks at clearance sales.
Edit: you can use brk as a code to get 15% off, but the big banner says no returns. If shipping damage is done, you just screwed.
wow. Yeah that's a risk. @@LB-qf3ef
5% discount ?? ROFLMAO
😝
In JAX store yesterday. New guitars 30% off and used 25% off. Might go back next week but is 20 miles. Not too much to get my eye but had a few things I might try at the right price. It wasn't right yet. 18 hooks filed and no room under the bed unless exceptional deal.
Wow those are pretty good deals.
@@badbrad Yea. They had a few nice guitars but I am not a Jackson or Fender guy. Couple of nice LPs but I have never lusted after one with buckers, a P90 rig would have maybe been interesting, but no bueno. My LP slot is filled with a Gretsch Jet right now, DynaSonics pickups a lot like hot but clean P90s. Chambered body with better balance than a lot of LPs I have tried. Bought a piezo p-up for my classical 30% off. Something I had wanted to get anyway.
Called SamAsh in Houston yesterday for a 61 Gibson SG, they have it at $1899, retail price is $1999. 🫠
yeah not too much of a deal
Haha! Me too! I went in there yesterday, 5% is nothing. I haven’t bought anything from Sam ash in many years, it’s been all ZZOUNDS for me, I know Sweetwater is known for good prices etc. ZZOUNDS has never done me wrong and gives me great deals for repeat business.
Sam ash isn’t owned by them anymore it’s in liquidation, the company who owns us is selling the product to recoup the debt that’s owed. The discounts will get to 30% eventually. It’s really rough the abuse we are getting from customers because of the prices, we all just found out we don’t have a job anymore and people are just being asses, really sucks. The brothers who owned Sam ash just left us all for dead
