I think it is an important topic in today's times and I would like to add the word "laziness" into the conversation. It has a negative connotation to it and nobody wants to be viewed as lazy. But I think there is a lot of importance in knowing how to rest, take time off, be in the present and learn/know how to do nothing, practicing it continuously in everyday life, as an important habit. I personally proudly strive to be more lazy (or call it "present", less occupied, etc) haha. :) Another great video Nathaniel!

“Beating boredom is about paying attention”. Everyone’s quoting that in the comments and I think it’s really true. “We need little pockets of boredom to create contrast”. I’d never thought of that, but it makes a lot of sense to me. History tells us that life for people whom everything is the same is the most boring of all. Luxury becomes dull if it’s constant.

Meditation made me realize that staying home and letting the time go by is a deep fear that I have. That if I don't make any use of my time, that time will escape and that I might miss out on experiences because I'm older. I think some people have this fear and although it can be the uncomfortable sensation of doing and being "nothing", boredom for me is just a word I describe my fear of time, my future and not living in the present moment. I think it's a healthy fear to have because we do have our final appointment with death and that we should make the best out of our time. But I forget that spending time with myself can be something that pays back a 100 fold and that it's ok to settle things down with myself. To appreciate and be with my thoughts, with nature or what Terence McKenna would say "The Journey to be alone, to be alone." To gain insight, to learn about yourself, to learn about your beliefs and fears and to have a hunger for life. I love you channel and it inspires me to make videos for myself and share perspectives and ideas.

I'd say remembering an internal drive to do something when you are bored is very important. A lot of our lives are filled with external motivators, like work, school etc. Things that you know you have to do. When you're bored, and you no longer have to go to class or work, there's a struggle to even get out of bed in the morning. Really allowing yourself to introvert and filling your bored time with creative projects or things you've been curious about is way to do something great for yourself.

    • @Veronicatastic

Thank you for bringing this topic up Nathaniel! I feel like boredom has to do with the ego because the ego-mind thinks that being bored is boring and wants his way out. Ego loves being in a society where it has all the distractions (drugs, tv, internet, socializing, video games, sex, thinking etc) it can count on just so to not be facing the boredom an sich. This is why going on a solo retreat is not something people do often, because it is hard to do, but when you face the so-called boredom long enough; Being will be something fascinating and very pleasant. I think that why this specific period of time is interesting; we are forced to face this boredom without realizing it is actually something very beautiful.

You spend so much time creating your content, and wishing to get people's attention that it can be overwhelming. I love your videos, with the current events plaguing the world I noticed that working from home was causing me to be bored. I watched your video on self improvement and decided that now would be the best time to do it. The need to travel from home to work and back meant that I was spending two hours a day on the train, to literally no hours on the train a day, from being time poor to time rich. I had never been time rich, I was finding myself feeling bored during the week. So I started to find things about myself to improve on journally at the end of each day for mental clarity has become of one my main focuses. Wow, just wow! This video is a masterpiece and it definitely hits a nerve right now. During the last two weeks I realized really how much I lost the ability to focus and enjoy boredom. It came to a point were I was not able to watch a 10min youtube video while doing something else on my phone or reading the comments while the video was running. However, the last two weeks really helped me to get back again to a more delibarate and intentional stance towards life. I got reminded of how important it is to enjoy the little (sometimes boring) things like sitting on the balcony in the sun and reading a book on how I can set up a small garden on my balcony. I'm convinced I can make it happen but I need to focus on the crucial aspects and cut away the unnecessary distractions on the way which only serve to cover the more boring parts of such a project. I also started to write poems again in the morning which I find really fulfilling. Thanks a lot for the video Nathan and keep doing what you do!

Why does everybody keep posting things about boredom? The real problem is not boredom, at least for the ones like me who really have work to do but now from home. The real challenge is to stay in focus, not to deal with boredom. I would gladly take boredom instead. Staying in focus and not procrastinating is the ultimate deal breaker these days, as you don't get to experience the difference between your workspace and your home, so your brain automatically tells you to go watch a movie, read a 4-month old magazine, go bird-watching to the balcony or even cook a frozen pizza. So you just live in constant limbo of thoughts, where you can't really set goals anymore and neither be good at work nor at life outside of it.

I was in 18 days of total isolation quarantine in China battling the inner anxiety to be productive, and my need to just stop and relax for a moment, by the end I feel like I can out a totally different person, and I start d actually doing the things I've been putting of for years. Now I have a UA-cam channel in a very similar genre to you, and I appreciate your honesty man!

    1. Watching your videos, no matter how long they are, is always a heartwarming experience.
    2. There was a book I read like three years ago. It was about how old people are constantly meditating about their life when getting bored; evaluating, thinking and sorting things out.
I remember my grandma never had an argument with my mum, she was just smiling and always saying to her "you´re too busy to see your own problems"
Boredom might be a scarecrow for the modern world though I'm sure it's probably one of those things we need more than anything else.

Not only that, I love the way you portray these ideas in your videos - things like editing, examples, quotes .. I appreciate it all! Keep up the good work.

Is anyone else feeling like they don't have any amount of energy in them while we are just inside our homes, doing nothing! My room is full of books, and surprisingly i used to read a lot on normal days, but as we are under lockdown, i am unable to focus, is there anyone like me out there?
    Please help me

    • @ChasingObstacles

story point it’s most likely because you use social media more during these times, which spikes up dopamine levels in your brain more than reading books does, that’s why when you go and try to read a book you’re brain can’t focus and wants to go back to the more “entertaining thing” like your phone. Try a dopamine detox to stop it. I have a video about it on my channel you can check it out :)

Brian Diehl sorry that didn’t work for you buddy, there could be multiple different reasons you’re suffering from lack of energy, your nutrition, lack of physical activity, poor sleep or too much sleep, it could also be as simple as you lost momentum on your goals and don’t have the motivation or purpose to start again, or more serious problems like depression or underlying disease. Because of lack of information about your situation I can’t determine which one it is for you, I suggest you take a look at each of these problems and see which one you resonate with the most. Good luck, you got this!

The problem with this is that I don’t think boredom IS that space of daydreaming and creativity when you wash up and go onto autopilot or when you spend a long car trip staring out the window- that might be doing nothing, but it isn’t boredom. Boredom is so much worse. It’s when you spend hours sitting in your bed staring at the wall because it seems like the only thing you think of doing, it’s the time when you want to get up and do something but you can’t so you just sigh and watch another episode of that minecraft series, even though it makes you feel ill. Maybe it’s because you’re such a productive and self caring guy that you don’t feel this as much, but as someone who is inherently lazy and unfocused, I have said on many occasions that boredom is the worst possible feeling. Even if you are in pain or angry or scared, at least you’re doing something with your life. Being truly bored is just a bit shite to be honest.

    • @2992user
      @2992user 4 роки тому +1

Hey, I'm not sure exactly how to respond to this, but just wanted you to know that people can relate and you're not alone :) I definitely get what you mean and I don't have a magic cure. I'm having that frustrated, hateful sort of boredom today myself - consuming (eating/watching) stuff that makes me feel worse. I noticed in what you wrote, and it's something I'm guilty of myself, that there was quite a lot of self-criticism about being 'inherently lazy and unfocused' and the idea that you're not 'doing something with your life' or not enough. It made me think that there was more to your description of 'want to get up and go do something but can't' than a physical lockdown. It helps me to remember that lots of these thoughts and feelings about ourselves really are just thoughts and feelings and, like any perspective, they can change, if we gently start challenging our assumptions. In my experience and in the opinions of people more knowledgeable than me, the self-flagellation can keep you more stuck than any actual deficit in your character or abilities. Good luck

Thank you for another great video! It came at exactly the right time. It is scary to strip away all those actions that serve the goal of being interesting and occupied all the time. I think a reason for this behavior is our dependency on other people. You´re depending on others to get money, social interactions, appreciation, a career... We´ve been taught that in this speeding world we can´t just do what we want whenever we want to do it. We have to get in line, we have to function at all times and we have to keep up with the world. We´ve been taught that there is no time for boredom.

I've been in a sort of mental limbo in the past month where I've spent a lot of time on distractions like UA-cam and Netflix. It was mostly mindless consumption of content to keep myself from facing my poor productivity. And then two days ago, I actually sat by myself in my room for fifteen minutes, let my mind drift, and I somehow ended up grabbing my sketchpad and drawing a fictional character I had recently created for a D&D game. And after that, I started thinking about all the other things I could get done, and making strategic plans, which got me back on track.
And then I saw this upload. It came at a pretty good time, and affirmed what I just experienced. Giving attention to creativity really does work wonders.
    Thanks Nate.
