    i highly recommend the live studio version where they recorded 3 songs, The Mara Effect. 16 minutes of pure bliss there.

    Welcome to the club! This is my song of the year. Spiritbox seem to get better with every song and they set the bar high from the outset

    Started listening to Spiritbox winter of 2018, they're contending in my top three favorite bands now. Every song has something different and unique to that track. These guys have quite a future ahead of them if they keep digging like they have been.

      Honestly that's all I need to hear to revisit them. Got any good suggestions?

      @@CriticalReactions The Beauty of Suffering (live vocal performance) is probably the most diverse and impressive track to date vocally and is alot of fun to watch. Instrumentally it's as equally diverse and keeps you engaged. Looking forward to more!

      @@kuneefay agreed. Love the live performance of it. Courtney's live performances are just incredibly good in general. She also did Belcarra which is an awesome song (damn, all songs are freakin awesome, what am I even talking, lol). Also loved the live performance of The Mara Effect of Spiritbox where they played all three parts of this series of songs - pretty amazing imo. I would like only to say that one is harsher than the other hehe. And her cleans are damn beautiful aswell.

    I love that you hear P.O.D. in this .. because I did too! I loved P.O.D. back in the day ... they had such a big, melodic sound. And Spiritbox has taken that to a new level for me.

    Spiritbox is pure love. That song was a nice introduction to the band I would say, wasn't it? Welcome to spirit land. My favorite song since it was released for sure. But damn, I love all of their amazing songs, it's such a unique and talented band. I liked your reaction and technical analysis of the song and composition as a whole. That ending really blowed you away haha. I think it got everyone of us. It just hits you right in the face - just incredible. One of few reaction videos I really found interesting to watch and hear someones opinion to their music. Nice one! Would love to see some more Spiritbox on your channel tbh. Keep it going!

    She's not using fry. It's a false chord with a shouted belt layered on top for most of them. The lows are just a straight false chord.

    So we had an extended discussion about that china groove. The consensus was that it’s NOT actually triplets but super syncopated dotted 8ths with occasional 8th notes thrown in to make it resolve in weird places. Also, they have a one take “live (in studio)” video of her doing this...she’s the real deal.

    I fairly sure they program the drums of course for the sake of creating their sound... Of course the drummer can totally play exactly everything organically.... I could be wrong that the drums are programmed... It does have that feel and sound to them in my opinion... It obviously just a creative choice that meshes with a perfect blend with their mix....

    Their tracks Perennial or Trustfall are two of my favorites. I have all of their music they've released and none of it ever gets tiresome listening to repeatedly. If you like Spiritbox as much as I do, you will definitely appreciate Unprocessed, they as well have phenomenal skill with their instruments.

    I only heard Spiritbox for the first time very recently. Just like with Jinjer I think the combination of very beautiful feminine singing with good "distorted" parts in between is cool.
    There's a one take recording of her doing this song, which I actually like even more than the more "processed" sound from this sort of full studio version. For me the effects they added to her voice for the album version actually take a bit away from the way it just floats above the music.

    That first verse, the drummer is playing a 3 over 4 polyrhythm on his china cymbal. If you catch the tempo, imagine the right hand is accenting every 3 8th notes, instead of grooving in a straight 4/4 pattern. If you keep in time with the snare, it will guide you around the polyrhythm by staying in 4. What makes it so hard is factoring in that foot pattern he plays on top of that. It's all in 4/4, they're just showing off their musicality.

    If anything I feel this is their most "radio-friendly" song, most of the rest of their tracks are so much more interesting.
    She has several live vocal performances of certain songs, my pick would be The Beauty of Suffering. She goes from growl to singing in a hearbeat. Love it, seeing them play this weekend!

    You should check out their live session for the song The Mara Effect. I know you generally prefer pure studio versions, but The Mara Effect is a multipart song and this is the only way to get them all played as a single song. And it's a live session and not a stage performance, so it's cleaner and better mixed than your average stage show recording.

    the accents on the opening guitar break down this way: 3/16, 5/16, 5/16, 5/16, 5/16, 9/16. So it is 32/32 = 4/4, but those weird subdivisions make it feel off time a bit.

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  3 роки тому

      Excellent! Thanks so much for this. I love when people when take something simple like 4/4 and strip out all of the comfort of it and replace it with weird accents and subdivisions.

    They're not offbeat triplets on the "splash" (it's a stack) he's playing something called a polyrhythm, which is when you play in 2 different time signatures. For example playing 5\4 on the cymbal but 4\4 on everything else. {Don't know what the actual time sigs were} It just overlaps at a certain point. 👍

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  4 роки тому +1

      You're not wrong. Polyrhythms are definitely how most drummers end up counting or 'feeling' drum patterns. That's the musician point of view. A composer point of view sees how the notes fit into a single time signature. It has to be this way since there isn't any "good" method of notating in multiple time signatures (there are ways but it gets messy). Both ways of explaining what is happening is correct, it just depends on what angle you are approaching the music from.

      So far I think I'm one of the few to catch that. I don't know if it's purely coincidental or if they are influenced by P.O.D. but the sound of that section is very, very P.O.D.-like.

    This band is cool but the only problem I have with them is they sound exactly like the band Monuments but with a female singer...except the guys in Monuments are a alot more talented...guitarists John Browne/Olli Steele and Bassist Adam Swann are unreal.
    I personally prefer Courtney in IWABO
