if you slide the muffs on from the backside won't that allow you to test out you motor in gear if you need to. Thanks for the video it really helped me change out my impeller.
Good details. Nothing more annoying than a quick "how to" video that skips important details for the sake of being short. Much appreciated. I'm doing this repair to an '04 model that has been in storage several years since my Dad passed. He'll be impressed thanks to your help. Godspeed and tight lines my friend.
Thanks a million for this video! First time working on an outboard and I was able to replace mine with no trouble. A little comment for anyone watching - I thought I had a part that was too big, but the fins will bend when put into the cup. I went back and watched this a second time and he says "you might need to twist the prop to get it in" - this is so that fins bend and pop in. Thanks again!
Just a reminder that anyone watching this should remember to turn their driveshaft clockwise only when putting the housing back on the new impeller, as he did. I think some motors may turn counterclockwise but I'm not sure which. Cheers.
Excellent video! I like how clear and well lit it is thereby allowing you to really see what's going on. Also, nice that you take you time and show each step.
Nice instructions. Just did this on a 2010 Yamaha F25LA. Not too hard. Found it easier to partially install one lower bolt (to hold unit) while reattaching shift rod screw. Even purchased the quick silver grease. Thank you
Great video, one of the best instructional videos I have ever seen. The only thing that could have made it better is if you came over and did the work for me 👏👍
You should first bolt the lower unit to the outboard then connect the shift shafts together. By doing it opposite, like in your video, you might hear clicking sounds in the gearbox, like when you have your shift lever halfway pushed. By having your lower unit in reverse before you remove it, it will give you greater access to the brass standoff and the nut.
@@adambaumbach6763 you don't have the shift shaft of the lower unit in reverse. Get the lower unit out of the outboard. Push the shift shaft of the lower unit downwards WHILE turning the prop, make sure that you can't push it down more!! Push the shift lever of the outboard to the reverse position. Bolt the lower unit to the outboard. Connect the shaft linkage and you are done.
Mine had some type of white silicone on the bolts because of dissimilar metals (aluminum/Steel). Also its best to call a Yamaha dealer and get the EXACT part number for your kit. Mine had 11 different kits and only 1 is the right kit. Use your model number off the plate on side of motor and call a dealer. Best to order the kit right from the dealer vs off of SCAMazon. Yamaha does not sell direct or through parts houses so the only way to get OEM and not CHIN-HO-OEM-Knockoff is to buy from a Yamaha dealer. WARNING if you spin the propeller the wrong way during cup to impeller insertion the impeller will be in the wrong way with fins backwards. Fins should be pointing clockwise when held in left hand looking down at upside down cup. I insert my impeller in the cup while in my hand C and then slide the cup/impeller over shaft. For a 2021 F25swhc the kit number is 6fm-w0078-02-00 and the impeller alone number is 6L2-44352-00 Also for removing a stuck key here is how. 1.) Wire brush any rust off. 2.) Spray with penetrating oil. Let sit overnight or for one hour. 3.) Tap one side of key with a large flat punch on one side so it rocks in the slot and it should rock out easy peasey. 4.) If its still stuck you can freeze it with any compressed air item hel upside down, like a can of propane or dust off and freeze it to make smaller then use tap/rock method. 5.) If still stuck and least desirable use a small dremil cut off disk to cut a slot in the top (dont nick shaft) and pinch with vise grips and pull out.
Good video! I just bought a boat with this exact engine, quick question: what is the little wire sticking out the front of the lower unit/leg seam? You moved it when you were putting the lower unit back in.
Great stuff! Talking about the lower unit, do you have a video showing how to pressure test it? I have a suspected tiny leak and read that you can use low pressure in the case to find which seal is leaking... :-)
I liked your video but I have one question if you put your water muffs on from the other side of the motor wouldn't that solve the propeller from hitting it if you came in from the other side
Agreed but I had to do it that way for some reason I can’t remember. Also never put it in gear and Rev it with no load (i.e. not in the water) it can ruin the gears
Are you in neutral when first looseing that first barrel nut? Im working on a 25hp 1996 and that shift rod wont come out...when backing the that nut off I get a ton of tension
I have a similar Yamaha 25 hp 2-stroke engine. In replacing the water pump impeller I noticed that there is rubber Seal Damper (Yamaha part # 6L2-45375-00-00) adjacent to the water pump that stops water and exhaust from entering the compartment with the water pump. There was a sealant with the consistency of silicone used at the ends of the seal damper for sealing purposes. I want to replenish this sealant when reassembling the motor. Do you know what type of sealant would be good for this purpose? I am thinking of using Permatex Ultra Black max oil resistance RTV silicone gasket maker. Does this make sense?
Heeeeelp!!! I've searched everywhere I can't find an impeller for my motor did you say what year yours was, when I follow the link it's the wrong size shaft hole

Totally agree. I said to myself damn got the wrong part. Watched it again an I was good to go. Saved a ton from the video.

That’s exactly what happened to me. Now I can’t get the clicking noise to go away. I’ve taken it apart and put back together about a dozen times now 😩

like how you setup you work space to hold the lower unit, easier to work on!
Clear demo. Thank you sir🙏👍
Thanks for this video! Super easy follow along.
Terrific video! Thanks so much for posting. What is the wire sticking out of the base unit that you move when you're refitting the base unit?
Great video, thanks for sharing
Very helpful, thank you
My little metal impeller housing seems like it was glued into the plastic housing. Would make sense since it shouldn't move
Did exactly what you said and shift rod will not unscrew enough to release shift rod..

Good video! I just bought a boat with this exact engine, quick question: what is the little wire sticking out the front of the lower unit/leg seam? You moved it when you were putting the lower unit back in.
Pretty sure its what remains of a safety wire between the lower unit and the upper housing.

No
Will this repair kit fit a 2002 F25TLRA? Everything I see is it only fits years 93-96 C30 but you used it in a 2003 so curious
It appears that your water muff is backwards… install it from the front and you can shift it as you please
Are you in neutral when first looseing that first barrel nut? Im working on a 25hp 1996 and that shift rod wont come out...when backing the that nut off I get a ton of tension
Yes you have to play with the gear some. And I had the same issue with paint buildup around the lower unit shift rod shaft
I would like to know what trailer you have? I have the same G3 boat and the same motor, but could use that trailer.......
Came with the boat. It’s a G3 trailer
