Rats/mice. There is a 5 gallon bucket top with a ramp that has a pivoting floor and bait cover... the mice climb the ramp, walk across the trap door and slide into the bucket. Maybe even sell them to the reptile mart with your quail eggs?
Quail popping up and breaking their necks is a myth,, I use dog kennels for cages and with no miss haps.. buying these kennels has been a blessing for my quail,,sliding tray and plenty of room.....makes life easy, I also use large water bottles with the bird watering systemgravity fed,.works great also..thank you for all the fantasic ideas for my birds..I raise TN red quail with ver little info anywhere,, they have a great hatch rate,, and they don't start laying for 6 months, but very hardy birds and they lay longer with many eggs..The only quail known for being nesters and raising their own chicks,,, I give them their own natural ground coop..Very healthy and intertaining birds, they can not be put with other quail, too aggressive,,but they don't fight much among their own species... I love them..great egg and meat quail..
@@jenjabba6210 1/2x1/2 aviary wire. hooked by zip ties. from the inside. for stability on the bottom wires of the cage, but also can use the tray, and wrap the sides with 1 foot bubble wrap for sawdust or chip spillage...unless outside and that won't matter..
I put my newly hatched quails in the brooder and the heater failed a few hours later the chick's were stiff dead so I quickly turn on the heater and after an hour those little birds started to come back alive now it's been a few hours and they are back to normal again. 😆

@Coturnix Corner What issues can develop from quail manure in the water?? Never fails, I can clean the waterers in the morning and by 2 pm they are dirty again. I need to know what kinds of sicknesses and meds are needed? I want to be prepared just incase something happens. Thanks so much!!
Add a circulation pump with a return feed (top of bucket) and a temp controller that turns the pump on anytime below 40°. Also use a submersible bird bath de-icer in the bucket that kicks on (controller usually included) at freezing. Insulate the tubing (and/or use Pex vs PVC) You can replace the HD bucket(s) with a $150 rainbarrel and diverter from your gutter for free, chlorine free water. Finally, if feeding city water directly into a closed system (bypassing the bucket altogether) make sure you place a pressure reducer inline (40-60 psi normal reduced to 1-2 psi) so the water nipple can be pushed in by the quail and not squirted like a hole in a hose.

Tractor supply has dog kennel (pvc) crate pans. I'm looking for a source for old lg school cafeteria trays. I used one to make a hitch hiking sign in college to go home once. I would build cages around the size of the tray, not visa versa. See what you can find, or buy some tin and pound a lip around the edges

I'm wondering if PES pipe wrapped in heat tape would worrk in freezeing temps. It works fofr houses so maybe for quail water systems too?

Gypsy, are you talking about the 2'x3' pans? Those are "oil drip pans" available at Auto-Zone, O'reillys etc. auto parts stores, nationwide.
