And people were bitching and complaining about how big of a moment that is in the game and how the show could possibly prove an equal point. As if this change was rocket science or something. Neil and others probably had so many ideas they didn't use in the game and they could very well be recycling those ideas for the show.

You have a fair point about Ellie not acting like she hates Joel the appropriate amount, but I feel like Joel does show that he absolutely hates her. It's subtle, but there's a little look he gives her right after Tess' death before he walks off, and it's a look of pure "this is your fault, and you revolt me."

Craig has said infected are only violent if you resist, which is why they weren’t violent with Tess. It’s not because she’s already infected, as we know they continue to attack Ellie even though she’s technically infected as well.

  • @ElkjaerTV
    @ElkjaerTV Рік тому +22

A guess for why she got bitten again, is to show she is immune to additional infections. In the game this is done in the subway were she is not wearing a mask in the spores. In the show to my knowledge there is no spores so they needed a new way to show that.

@Marius Boss This might be a joke on your part lol, but I'll tell you what I think anyway. She's infected already. The stalker can tell. It feels it. She isn't trying anything because she doesn't wanna alert the other infected. She is also losing herself a little as she's going slowly. Her body is losing. The stalker is taking the opportunity to make the fungus take her over faster. It's already connected to her, that's why it doesn't rip her apart or just bite her

I suggest you listen to the show's official podcast about the episodes before doing your take because they go over almost every change to their adaptions. You'll get a better insight on why they made the changes instead of guessing. It will also help you go over the episode in your head without having to re-watch it since you don't have HBO max.
Also, they didn't mention this in the podcast, but they combined Hotel with this Downtown episode. You obviously noticed Ellie messing around, being a kid and pretending to be checked into the hotel, but the building they entered in was actually the Hotel. Ellie actually said her line from the game about ever staying in a place like that. This time Tess is the one to answer Ellie with Joel's line, but a little different.

3:52 exactly right. I thought that through both the first two episodes. His motivations seem different, especially since he already wants to go west to find Tommy so the growth Joel and Ellie have is going to be weakened. Also Pedro's Joel is a lot more robotic (trying to show his numbness, but not as effective as how Troy had portrayed him very walled up). I don't think its an issue with Pedro as an actor but rather directorial cues.

In 2003 there was already internet, they should have done a press conference immediately and let everyone know to prepare for it. And during the clock shop scene from episode 1, it was already starting to spread and become a problem in the US. How would Billy even be arrested at 2 am the next morning? Excellent episode (again), from beginning to end with really good world building. I think they made a wise choice to ditch the spores and replace that danger with the 'they're all connected' thing. It adds a new level of creepy to the world. Like a twisted Pandora vibe (Avatar reference). I think it's nice they showed at least one scene that is true to the game. Has to be fan service and I hope they keep doing it. But they are progressing faster because there are also some new things coming up, according to the trailers I saw before the series started. So it won't all be recognizable and that's good too. I agree with Ant that the dynamic between Joel and Ellie seems less unkind but I wouldn't mind if they 'clicked' earlier on because it makes moments where something goes wrong more impactful to the viewer. I believe that this iteration of Joel and Ellie still hate each other. Not in the same way they do in the game, just in a more psychological way. Also, Tess acts even more like a mom to Ellie (though in a very survivalist way), it shows in the way she addresses Ellie during their conversations. The way Ellie did not want to leave Tess behind… says much about how she needed those bits of human emotions.

you are absolutely correct about ellie and joel "hating eachother" more in the game. I'm writing this as of after viewing episode 5... I STILL agree that the turn-around of them actually CARING for one another, will be less impactful than it was in the game. BUT- personally, i think the show is nothing short of perfect... so I'm sure they/Druckman found a way to make their turn-around HIT just as hard.

The reason Tess doesn’t fight it is that if she does, she’ll be torn to pieces! Being dead is not conducive to doing anything, much less blowing these things up to save Joel and Ellie. As for the kissing thing, it’s not like they were smooching, it was doing what the show has always established these things as doing, using the tendrils to quickly turn people and you need an open orifice or wound to do that. The infected also don’t attack each other, they operate in herds, they can distinguish between even like a fresh runner and normal human. Tess was bitten on the neck, the show establishes that being bitten here will turn you in mere hours, so the idea that the infected would be able to tell that someone is mostly turned but not entirely isn’t hard to believe when you think about the other crazy shit like Clickers learning echolocation and Bloaters being these indestructible behemoths, Shamblers growing acid spores and shit, Stalkers knowing to hide and ambush people etc.
As for Joel and Ellie, Ellie and Joel actually shit talk each other more in the show than in the game and Joel takes a lot longer to stop wanting to kill her after he finds out she’s bitten. He has no interest at all, he just wants to go back the whole time just like the game.

    Hello Anthony! 👋😀
It’s interesting how you perceived the dynamic between Joel and Ellie in the tv series, ep2. Because to me it felt the opposite, to me it felt he almost hated her more/hated each other than in this part of the story in the game. To me it felt they compressed the timeline in which their relationship evolve + they’ve changed the order of some of the lines in tv series(which doesn’t bother me at all).

I think they're doing a good job but I'm not enjoying it quite as much as I'd hoped. What I'm not a fan of in particular is the way they are filming, everything is in short shots, 90% of the picture is blurred at any given time. They really had very little faith in the FX department. I feel like Joel doesn't hold his character well enough either. He often looks cheeky and like he isn't taking it seriously, like he KNOWS he's making a videogame adaptation and therefore isn't putting full effort in. He has very good moments, but weak moments, too. He's a bit too inconsistent, and like I say, doesn't look his heart is in it, YET. Ellie and Tess are/were doing a good job. Tess was the standout actor in my opinion, her eyes never wavered from the role like Joels. Ellie feels like she's feeling out the role but is taking it seriously and is doing a very good job.
I think with the new lore about the infection/fungus acting as one big brain could lead to numerous plot holes but we'll see how they handle it, it's a tricky thing to navigate lore/plot wise.
I really think the characters need more development, I'm worried that the series is going to lean more into the action than the development. Action is fun to play, for me, but to watch I'm really not interested. So altercations with clickers etc don't get the blood pumping, I more zone out. I much prefer the stranger interactions like what we see with Tess at the end, though one of the grossest things I think I've ever seen it genuinely made me think about how the fungus brain works, are they docile in certain situations, can they be coerced etc. I think it adds a level of depth that hopefully can separate it from the more cliche zombie slasher.
My hopes for the show are for it to ostensibly evolve, both with character writing and action pieces. I'd compare the Jurassic Park scene where the kids are in the kitchen with the 2 velociraptors to the Clicker scene, it's actually full of Jurassic Park nods throughout, however it doesn't get close to how effective that scene is in Jurassic Park. Fear has to be illustrated properly, compare how scared the kids are in Jurassic Park and how that amplifies the fear in that particular moment. I think that's a good example of how something should hit compared to when something slightly misses, and that's my general takeaway so far, it's not quite hitting hard, but it's only very narrowly missing. Not all the pieces are quite coming together perfectly.
It's a brilliant videogame adaptation but it's slightly faltering as a standalone piece of work. I will keep on watching because I'm a fan of TLOU and hope to see it come together properly at some point. Ep 1 I'd say was a 8/10, ep 2 a 7-6/10.

I think it’s cool that they nerf Joel, Ellie and Tess by quite a lot. In the game you kill about 500 infected and another 500 human enemies. You’re quite invincible actually. I mean at Winter, Ellie probably take out 50 grown up mans in that chapter. Now they can’t even properly deal with 2 clickers, really add up to the danger of the whole infected situations.

Your talk about the "kiss" made me remember Tess' line to Joel about him not feeling the way she feels. What IF she allowed the kiss because after longing for Joel and recieving nothing, the infected noticed, pursued and wanted to share a kiss with her... with Tess knowing that this will be the last one she will ever have.
