As the other person said, there are good unfinished games. The most important aspect of a video game is whether or not you're having fun or if the game engaging you in. That's it. I used to play a game on my PS2 called Crash Twinsanity. It's an unfinished mess but it has very solid gameplay to the point I replay it once in a while... because it's fun. Then there are games like Uncharted 4 which I enjoyed the well written narrative and characters but I only played it once when it came out and have no intention of replaying it because there is nothing enganging about it that makes want to come back. Only if I could wipe out my memory of the game's story.
@@Manic_Panic the "game is good because you have fun" argument is flawed you need to look at whenever playing the game is worth your time aswell throwing shit at a wall can be fun but that doesnt make it a worthwhile activity
@@czarnakoza9697 It's a video game, not productive work. What is a video game "worth my time"? What does that even mean? For example, we know Mario games are liked by many people but why? There is nothing special or groundbreaking about them, though they nail the most important part, they're fun, you could replay them again next year and still enjoy them as much unlike the movie games or games with very weak gameplay. It seems like you guys are too focused on having the next, most groundbreaking thing rather than enjoying the fun we already have. Too worried about metacritic scores, cinematics, top of the line voice acting, pretty graphics instead of just picking a controller and play something actually enjoyable.
The moment games decide to emulate movies instead of being GAMES it was the moment AAA gaming died. Live service slop is just another piece of that cake.
To be fair Resident Evil 4 popularized the over the shoulder camera style but that’s an amazing game. I loved Ghost of Tsushima and the Horizon games it’s just that PlayStation hasn’t been putting out a wide variety of games with different styles. The same thing would happen if they put out nothing but platformers.
The PlayStation brand really started going downhill when they decided to close Japan Studio which was a studio that put out some really creative and unique first party games like Gravity Rush or Puppeteer. Now Sony won't ever express enthusiasm for a game if it's not a cinematic Oscarbating popcorn title like The Last of Us.
Exactly. I see this video pop up all the time with people complaining about how movie games took over and I'm like "where!?" For every story game currently, there are 10 Metroidvania, Soulslike, Live Service, procedurally generated crafting game, farming sim, survival horror, or some roguelike. Most adventure games are these massive open world RPG's which are not the same as TLOU.
Nah. Narrative novels with minimal gameplay have ruined gaming. Im having more fun playing old action based games or shooters (even though I am a big RPG fan) than I could ever have with games like the ones mentioned in this video.
@@ShepardCommander OK that's your opinion thanks for sharing. please give me 5 examples of 'narrative novels with minimal gameplay' that came out this year/2023
@@jlo9993 This. People act like gaming has this problem when we barely have games like that. The obvious "meta" atm is nearly... the opposite. Completely story-free "endlessly replayable" battle royale/season pass/multiplayer/looter shooter nonsense that's just drowning the market, or those "endless hours of the same shit" open world games. In fact, the games with heavy emphasis on story often *still* have a *lot* of gameplay to offer. The fact we're actually in an age where suddenly people say tlou of all games is ruining gaming just speaks of how completely cynical and trying to be miserable gamers have become. I play games from 20 years ago. Games from 15 years ago. Games from 10 years ago. Games from 5 years ago. Games that came out this year. Why? Because I stay away from the actual crap - the things I mentioned above. In most other categories, games are still churning out amazing title after amazing title. The biggest problem imo is that gamers nowadays are so obsessed with every game having to be either as incomprehensible as David Lynch (aka anything done even a bit before ever is bad) or at least as difficult as a fromsoft game. Or maybe those people are just an obnoxiously loud minority.
No! I like cinematic games there are not exactly movies they are something in between tbh. I hate when people say I don't like x you can't like x it's shouldn't exist we only need y which I like. Bruh. I can only agree that we need more diversity in genres, because having only one genre is stupid and boring after some time
Don't play them? You have a choice. Not every game coming out is a "movie" game, infact most games coming out right now are either survival games or live service games.
Telltale's Walking Dead had even less gameplay, and it was amazing. This type of genre has its place in the gaming world and it shouldn't affect other genres. Although, I do agree that its not good when they do reboots and sequels and they change the gameplay completely. I absolutely love story-driven games, but I agree that the gaming industry is turning into hollywood, focusing more on cutscenes and motion-capture acting (probably because it is easier to make and since people are lazy nowadays, they find it easier to watch most of the game, rather than having to put some effort to play it).
It's a point and click choose your own adventure game, tf do you expect? Clearly i was expecting too much when i wanted ND to evolve their Gears Of War type gameplay, but at least i got my wish with Uncharted 4. How does TLOU justify gameplay outside of being a poor mans Gears Of War? Genuine question too, I'm still trying to figure out if it's more successful as a show than a game so if you're a fan then your answer matters
@@XpertGreekGamer The story is great. Even the gameplay was interesting since I played on grounded difficulty. I had to resort only on stealth and nelee weapons, and also bottles and bricks, and since the ammunition and scrap material was scarce, you literally had to look for it throughout the game. Problem is that if one thing is very successful then everything will be a cheap imitation of it for the next decade to cash in on the formula. It happened with superhero films and overly narrative based games, and who can forget the cesspool that was YA fiction.

So this is new trend, complaining about cutscenes like if old RPG Snes games for example didn't have super long "cutscenes", or if MGS didn't do this in 1998, much more than TLOU. This new generation of younger players like to say these non-sense things like this video as if they wanted to prove something, like if they were "old school" and because complaining about some popular games is "cool" and all. Complaim less and play more, apreciate the game for what it is.
"it's not fun, this doesn't make a good game" is a HIGHLY subjective statement. I enjoyed ALL the style of games similar to the last of us or metal gear solid or Detroit become human or telltale games. Sometimes I just wanna lay back, relax, and not think too much, but rather be immersed in a good story where my decisions matter
Actually it's a bit of a misconception. Video games just like music and movies can be objectively bad. However that does not mean that bad games and movies can't still be enjoyed and liked by groups of people. The quality of movies and games is very concrete as there are many things you have to take into consideration when developing a game or writing a script for a movie. Example: Say I were to write a script for a movie. I would have no time to put effort into it and I would be complete inexperienced as well. I could litter the movie full of setups and no payoffs along with a couple of characters with no personality traits. That would make for an objectively bad movie. There are rules and guidelines that apply for good game design just as with movies. Game balance and difficulty curve are just two of them.
100% a HIGHLY suggestive statement. For me TLOU 1 and 2 is the most fun I've ever had gaming. The stealth and aggressive game play styles make me feel like such a badass and I love having to think critically with my choices to avoid running out of bullets.
The problem with these games is not the over the shoulder camera angle but the fact that 50% of the game is just walking or some other form of exposition dump or whatever. Implying that these games would be better if instead of just holding forward, you held right or left or down as well for extended periods of time seems foolish. I know that’s probably not what you were trying to say, but just be aware it sounds like that.
Gamers are ruining gaming for themselves because they can't step outside their tiny western AAA bubble. I've been gaming for 28 years and I'm still not tired of it. But that's because I avoid playable movies and AAA open world slop like the plague. I also make sure that at least one of my platforms is the latest Nintendo console, just for the variety.
I like how you say this as if Elden Ring and Baldur's Gate 3 never happened. Hate to break it to you, but Sony exclusives only make up a fraction of what's available today
Once again you people attack on good games and praise bad games that you suffer and lose in it and there is no fun in it like literally the soulsborn from software games and every single hard core video games that you lose and die over and over and over again and have no fun with it
Same here, I play mostly JRPGs, Mega Man, Souls games, and old Nintendo titles on emulators. Gaming is still as fun as it was when I was a kid, the problem is that gamers buy into the hype instead of the quality!
Death Stranding is the outlier here. It's made by Hideo Kojima who is a man who ALWAYS pushed cinematic experiences in-game, like the Metal Gear Solid games. It's similar to that - the game has an amazing story and the story really isn't the focus, but instead the focus is the puzzle-like hiking gameplay. I agree with you but let's be accurate on the games being mentioned here.
Elden Ring is an example of a game putting gameplay first, and you trickle the story in at the players pace, and wow them in a way theyre discovering the world for themselves, not because of a scripted or linear path. You can have those wow spectacle moments but not slack on the gameplay. A player driven experience can also be a narratively driven one, if done right.
I agree, but not entirely: in terms of storytelling, From Software has never been exactly good at it. The story of the world around you is only ever interesting if you actively search for it, and while it's important to have gameplay first (after all, Elden Ring is indubitably a masterpiece), a dark fantasy RPG world *should* have an engaging story. And story it has, but no storytelling- or rather, in the form of item descriptions and online lore searches, which ruin the atmosphere of living everything with personal experience. Regardless, I agree with the general sentiment
@@rubber161 I second this. I get the appeal of learning new story and lore beats that are told in indirect ways that the player has to put special effort on, and discussing the lore with the community is fun. But only if it's used as a bonus. The problem with FromSoftware games is that is their main storytelling technique, and they barely use anything else. That creates a constant emotional barrier between the player and the world. How the hell are you supposed to form an emotional connection with a character by reading about something they went through in the description of a ring? That's just "Tell, don't show" with extra steps. At best, it feels like I'm studying the world as an archeologist, not experiencing an actual story.
@@XanderVJ Exactly. Which, like you said, can be super interesting- if there is a storytelling that *makes* it interesting to purposefully seek and discover these descriptions. Ultimately, From's games have a great story-writing but a very poor story-*telling*
@@rubber161 i don't agree. fromsoft has mesmerizing gameplay instead of a story, which is what i prefer. i don't need a narrative type game story in my fromsoft game, it's excessive and not necessary. story is like fat on edge of a steak. some might prefer but i don't, i prefer a lean cut like from gives us
The way i see it, a bigger problem with AAA gaming is how asthetically repetitive they have become. There is nothing unexpected anymore, no new control mechanics you have to figure out, no interesting new visual styles, no new storytelling methods, no compelling gameplay beyond the usual AAA slop. Elden ring is one of the few atypical AAA games that actually felt new and it's basically souls+ in an open world setting. Playing a new AAA experience today, you will never have anything that you haven't found familiar in RE4 or TLOU. Neither game is bad, but it's the game feel with all of the novelty and nuance removed for RE4 all the interesting gameplay is gone and for TLOU all the character development and dynamics are thrown out for generic cliches and tasteless melodrama instead. It feels like it's just the same crap rehashed over and over again without further developments or anything new.
AAA has been kinda meh for very long ass time. AAA just doesn't innovate, in general it does not. There are few exceptions but not nearly enough. That is why I keep having far more fun with AA and small budget games and occasionally enjoy a few AAA when they make something good.

I don't know. I feel like theirs's room for both styles personally. If anyone does feel fatigued with modern gaming I can certainly understand. This is such an idiotic video. When I first played Last of Us when it was released in 2013, what made it so great wasn't the "camera" . It was the storytelling and its innovative slower, semi-realistic and visceral gameplay. The over the shoulder third person camera was already a popular thing since like 5 years prior with games like Gears, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, Uncharted and Batman. And if you go further back, we had many popular cinematic focused third person games with lots of cutscenes. Shadow of Colossus, Syphon Filter, James Bond, Splinter Cell, Mafia, Hitman. I mean heck, if you play GTA games since GTA3 and only play the main missions, you basically have a linear cinematic third person game on the same vein as Last of Us. Plus, most people seem to forget the Last of Us had an incredible multiplayer mode called Factions. It was basically a battle royale game before it was even a thing.
It´s really wild how he keeps focusing on the camera as if thats what makes the gameplay the gameplay lol He keeps calling the games movie games as if combat doesn´t exist or level design, or even exploration (which i can understand for some games like TLOU but... Days Gone? Horizon? God of War? all of those games are open levels and open worlds with a big focus on exploration. I guess we need games without story telling or any sort of cinematics for video maker to be satisfied lol Ironically making gaming less varied
Totally, I mean I'm just half the video and the only thing I understand is that he wants a game that continuously have game play, I bet that if will be ever a game that only has random good gameplay without story or telling why he would love it, is just like he likes gameplay and doing something all the time, he doesn't like pauses. Sure, there's only 19 buttons and a touchpad on a standard PS controller now, and every one of these games probably uses every single gameplay related one for multiple actions, in multiple contexts, but because they're "cinematic" it's watered down... Like they're mobile games or something.
I want to toss my two cents into this as well. One thing I find fascinating is how people think Kojima should have been a movie director instead, because his games are so cinematic. However, I tend to digress. Kojima is perhaps one of the "movie game" directors out there who actually seems to respect the gaming medium to the point that his games tell stories and events which movies or TV shows never could. I know *Death Stranding* is very divisive, but you can't argue that it plays like any other game out there, unlike "The Last of Us" style games which basically just come down to a boring "walk forward and listen to dialogue" thing, which got old very quickly for me.
I gotta disagree. Metal Gear Solid games had excessive cutscenes that dragged 1000 times longer than either Last of Us game. Maybe you preferred its premise over Last of Us or the setting, but the fact that Kojima enjoyed wasting your time with cinematics, can't be ignored.
Honestly, i am more of a story guy, i like reading books, watching movies, tv shows, dramas, documentaries, good UA-cam videos and well... Playing games, all for the stories, i am sucker for stories and gaming is the only form where the story can be "interactive" and not just an one sided consumption
Yeah me too, that's why I feel a bit surprised some people don't vibe with GOW, like in terms of storytelling that's such a flawless experience... What games did you find had the most compelling storylines?
This is stupid! Having fun, being entertained, and being intrigued can all work together or separately. YOU ARE NOT THE ARBITER OF WHAT IS OR WHAT IS NOT A GOOD GAME! Your opinion is less than nothing. It’s simply your preferred style. Broaden your mind
If someone says "This looks like a fun game...to watch" you're doing something wrong. I've said this myself watching clips of the new God of Wars and the FF7 remakes.
For me personally I really lost interest in both god of war and FF7 remake. The first new god of war was fun at first but I got really bored playing. The story was fantastic but that just met I started watching clips on UA-cam instead of playing it. Same for FF7 remake. I found it clunky and just not fun to play, so the story and characters weren’t enough to keep me playing when I could just watch it instead.
@skermcgurt8681 He's has a right to be upset about video games. (A lot of people, including myself, do.)The majority of video games nowadays have been bad. Besides getting a girlfriend isn't gonna make your life better.
It partly rose from the insecurity of some game devs not having their art form taken seriously by longer established art forms - film, being the main one. Also, there was a time when adults (and late teens) who played video games were considered lame and/or immature. And then you have those who couldn't succeed in their moviemaking endeavors decide to pursue game dev. Kojima is probably the most successful example.
The video could basically be summed up as: a completely exaggerated claim and an extremely superficial comparison focused on a single game (and considering that you only used early parts of GoW 2018, it's obvious that your comparison didn't delve into elements such as combat and exploration, just some narrative elements and the camera angle). In fact, if you want to blame someone, blame RE4 2005, it was RE4 that popularized all these elements present in this game

@@EggEnjoyer And he only uses GoW 2018 as an example, which makes it worse, as Sony usually releases 2 or more AAA per year, that is, it is not even 5% of PlayStation Studios games since 2013-2024
Honestly I think that the new God of War combat works great, it is visceral and very "heavy", the problem is that it would have worked better if the camera took like 4 steps behind, allowing you to actually see your surroundings
I personally like Last of Us and Uncharted type games. Heck I like games where story comes first. That being said, I also like JRPG games, CRPGs, action / adventure games, hack & Slash, city builders, racing games, first person shooters, 3rd person shooters, dance games, Metroidvania games etc. My point is, there is a world for all these type of games. I hate the argument of "this is not a video game" as though Crash Banicoot wasn't mostly just holding forward and pressing X and the correct moments.
Just commented the exact same thing lol, I agree fully. These are different games for different types of people. Not everyone likes “movie-games” and that’s fine because a lot of other people do. The over the sholder camera itself is not the problem, plenty of games have delivered great gameplay using this camera style. I think the word you are looking for is "walky talky gameplay style".
Yeah, I think he means games that focus more on the narrative experience than on gameplay elements/mechanics. Show (play), don't tell. Player choice in conversations makes the narrative sections of some games more "gamey" in that there's player interaction during the storytelling. Games are inherently about being an interactive entertainment experience and less a passive one.
Once I saw a post about a restaurant that run out of money to put movies in the TV, so they choose videogame campaings instead. They put Mk1, Uncharted, The last of us and RE Remake. Nobody ever ask about what the videogame was, but about what movie is that
This video premise should be directed at Sony first party titles and not the industry as a whole, because we had plenty of titles that prioritize gameplay by literally everyone else. Sure some others copy that movie game style, such as HellBlade 2, but i honestly can't say they are the majority, not at all. Also over the shoulder camera doesn't make a title a movie game. RE4, Gears of War and Vanquish all feature such a camera and they are all very gameplay focused.
In death strandings defense it actually uses movement as the foundation in its gameplay which pretty much no other Sony game does, it’s very cinematic but that has always been kojimas style.
Did you actually play Horizon, Days Gone, and the other games that you mention that are "over the shoulder" type? From what you have explained with the "Turn the controller back and the character faces you", those games can also do that. Also kinda weird for you to compare them to TLoU since they have way more intense gameplay and freedom. Literally nothing in this video convinced me why those games are like the "over the shoulder" game like TLoU.
10:06 except Hideo Kojima (the producer for death stranding) loves cinema and has been using cinematic shots, long cutscenes, and boring segments (for example, the ladder scene in metal gear solid 3) for about 15 years beforehand. I do understand the vitriol against the over-the-shoulder camera, though.
This video actually made me realize how wonderful Team Ico really was, their games was always get to the point and don’t drag on the story for too long but also have mysteries that would puzzle fans for 2 decades
FF7 has some of the greatest gameplay and story of all time in 1997 and the game looked like polygons. And they did it again in 2024 with FF7 Rebirth having again, some of the best gameplay and storytelling in any game I’ve ever played. It’s possible
I loved it until island 3 when it felt like they ran out of budget lol. The islands after the second were either completely lifeless, recycled or both. The bosses were also shockingly easy after the second one which was tough. Getting sucked into sidescrolling sections on the islands. It had potential and I'm excited to see how they can build and improve on it.
That thing you’re talking about with the camera, that originated with Resident Evil 4. RE4 shook the world of third person shooters when it released. So much so that that’s what inspired Gears of War’s combat, and that’s where the inspiration for The Last of Us’s camera came from.
there are so many games with deep stories and good gameplay that are old games like okami, kingdom hearts, metal gear solid, fallout new vegas, legend of zelda twilight princess, silent hill 2. I don't get why people think the last of us changed everything
First off, yes I’d be considered as a Kojima Stan, and Eminem Stan but that’s different. And I’m not blind to the faults in his games but to call him a rip off of the last of us is a long shot. From the very start of Metal Gear series, has been about the story with gameplay that pushes the system. Take metal gear: solid and metal gear solid: snake eater, and you can find insane details with crazy gameplay that pushes the limits. He made a playable trailer that was more scary than most horror games. Which resident evil 7 took. Lastly it’s about what people look for in a game that drives the industry.( yes it can be sad, like loot box, micro transactions, and live service) right now it’s about story telling and soul-rip offs (some bad/ some good.) if it’s not for you, show your support to the games you do like. Proving to game companies what they should make. ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.
Over the shoulder camera? You mean 3rd person bro? Its literally existed since the beginning of 3D games. You werent alive when Tomb Raider was first released right?
This is a particular reason why i still love Valve, even in their "cutscenes", they follow a philosophy of never taking control away from the player, a pretty good example is the whole Half-Life series so far, there's no loading screens that take you out of the game, and the whole games are played in one straight line, it's like you're going through the experience of the whole game in real time with Gordon
And it sucks. I love HL2, I have every achievement. But those parts? They suck. TLOU mops the floor with HL2 in that regard and several others, but people are too hiveminded to say it.
Final Fantasy 16 and the 7 Remakes are my favorite games of all time. They came out recently and still managed to have great stories AND great gameplay.
This is why the Devil May Cry series got like a lot of god-tier gameplay and the story is balanced enough that the fanbase wouldn’t mind a Vergil spinoff game.
TLOU was a good 'experience' not a 'game', and it worked for that particular 'video game' only, but everybody else tried to replicate it, to the point that now games no longer feel like games but movies.
@@I_Blue_Rose well this is factually incorrect. It has worked for many other games, some came out even before TLOU. just because some could not replicate the same commercial success does not mean they were bad games. Also, TLOU was in fact a good game. a VERY good game.

Only take away from this video is that you dont like over the shoulder, narratively driven games. Also the jabs at death stranding is low hanging fruit at this point. I get that game isnt everyone's cup of tea, but the gameplay has a lot of depth to it. Kojima gives the player so many tools to play with.
You make some very valid points but it sounds like you are really into and miss button mashing games. I DONT MISS THAT AT ALL. I love the new style of games and the great stories. It is like total immersion. To call modern game makers lazy is a bit of a stretch. They spend quite a bit of time trying to entertain us. Ps. I do like how you mention moving the camera a little further back. from the third person perspective. I've never really noticed it.
The Final Fantasy VII Remake project of games have been the best experiences I’ve had in years with gaming. FFVII Rebirth was a phenomenal experience this year and has a great story and prioritizes gameplay and exploration and strategy in order to progress along the story.

I've been waiting for this kind of video to come out. As much as i love the story of The Last of Us, the gameplay is really not "engaging." I preferred the Uncharted series more because the gameplay was more interactive. And i k ow that the uncharted games are compared to movies but the gameplay in these games were mostly fun.
I've been saying this stuff for years now. For the gameplay loop by far the most important thing as to wether I want to play something. I'm so glad more people are starting to say it too. You worded this so perfectly but not immediately criticizing TLOU and being very clear about why and how it affected gaming as a whole.
But…the games you mentioned are GREAT games though. I can’t agree that God of 2018 and Ragnarok gave mediocre gameplay. And Horizon gameplay is downright FANTASTIC! The games that you enjoy seemed to be specifically hack-n-slash. And they have their place in gaming, just like the story driven games gave theirs
When I was a little kid i liked rpg's because it was like i was playing a movie. And you had to read everything back then. Hours and hours of reading. It just depends on what youre looking for out of your entertainment. You may not like TLoU and that's fine, but it was an objectively good game
It's perfectly fine to like tlou, but if it gets to a point where every video game copies this linear idea with how the tlou went with its story and puts the gameplay in the backseat(like GOW 2018 or any modern playstation exclusive since originally they were gameplay first) it becomes a problem. That's why I didn't like rdr2, the gameplay felt more boring than the first one but story is great.
I understand what you're saying. But luckily, you have a choice when it comes to playing games. There are room for well done cinematic games. MGS 4 is an example of this.
so you don't like cinematic games, so that ruined gaming as a whole ? just stop being to negative, there are plenty of indie and even AAA games that prioritize gameplay over story. people these days are so negative, all they wanna talk and hear about is how something sucks or something ruined everything. this is the exact reason people like synthetic man get so much views. people passionately "love" to hate everything.
they're going down a pipeline to find reasons to hate anything people love, dude says GOW 2018 didn't suit kratos but he's the first person I've ever seen say that
No, "gamers" ruined gaming because they, in fear of missing out, have to take part in everything that the gaming industry throws at them. What happened to "don't believe the hype" and all that?
@@princepeachfuzz Nah, there are actually a good amount of people that don't like GOW 2018 as a game and how Kratos is as a character. Most of those people are either older GOW fans that grew up with the older GOW games and just gamers that just don't like GOW 2018 or Ragnarok.
@@stevekramerf242 Don't blame every gamer. Besides where have you been?!? There are a lot of gamers that are avoiding new games they know are gonna be bad and keep telling a lot of casuals to not believe in the hype.
The "Last of Us Effect" is simply expanding the medium, not removing the essence of what makes video games good. People define and experience "fun" differently which is why this argument can fall apart.
MGS successfully did that in 1998 without ACTUALLY removing what makes a game, a game. Easiest example, Psycho Mantis boss fight. What's an example from TLOU that showcases how the devs took full advantage of the fact that it's a video game?
@@XpertGreekGamer You're glossing over the question: "what makes a game a game?". As someone who has a love for storytelling, a video game akin to The Last of Us offers a narrative experience only possible in a game. One where a person can partially control the pacing, choose how they want to approach the world, and explore many scattered details that greatly enhance the world building. I find this "walking sim" experience to be incredibly fulfilling and not needing to be stretched out as an identity in terms of its gameplay. I also have a love for games with extremely stimulating gameplay. Fulfilling, but in a different way and appealing to a different part of the brain. I just don't understand why these different types of games can't coexist being equally valuable.
@@sculby What value does TLOU bring to this medium? What is the USP of TLOU? Again what advantage does TLOU take of the fact that it's a video game? A game has gameplay, Bubsy 3D is a game. Now that i answered your question, it's time you answer mine
@@XpertGreekGamer I already stated the value. The game is targeted to a person like me who has a love for storytelling. Again, a game like TLOU offers a "narrative experience only possible in a game." I justified this earlier with points. Adding a different style of gameplay would ultimately stretch a game like TLOU thin. This is because, considering the purpose of the game, it would break immersion. Like I said, different games appeal to different parts of the mind. The definition of a game does not have to be so rigid as to exclude people like me. What makes a game a game is cultivating an experience unique to the medium of gaming, and we are still discovering how vast this could be.
Yeah. LOU should’ve only impacted games of similar genre, but instead impacted many genres. Like I enjoy the heck out of SM2 when I’m doing combat, stealth, or traversal. But then the game forces me to do some slow walking out of costume, ride bikes, run around as a spider-bot, shoot bees, and all these mini games that make repeat play throughs a bit of a slog for those moments. Thankfully, I can skip some of those nows but if the game offers a skip button, then it reeks of the devs not feeling confident in them and it’s probably not needed in the first place. Last of Us definitely impacted Spider-Man in certain areas which I dislike. We even have 3rd person, stealth, cover-shooter segments as MJ. Literally being LOU in those moments lol On the other hand, FF7 Remake and Rebirth have such good and complex core gameplay while at the same time having the presentation of movie, I keep coming back to them over and over.
Ama be honest here, I've been gaming all my life and you know growing up, having to finish University and doing this job thing really has made me so exhausted to delve into something that isn't linear or massively open world like RDR2. I really enjoy games like TLOU, uncharted and God of war now, something with an engaging story.. Games can be anything to be honest
Honestly, there's nothing wrong with games focusing on story so long as its good and the gameplay is fun enough. Witcher 3 has some serious flaws in its gameplay, but nobody gives a sh!t because its still fun enough even after hundreds of hours and everything surrounding it is also S tier to this day. Legacy of Kain is a series that isn't known for its gameplay, in fact outside of the first Blood Omen it really struggled with it, but its galaxy brain story was so mesmerising and managed to incorporate time travel in a way that makes all the games better in retrospect. Because knowing all the machinations that were happening behind the scenes just adds to the poetic irony and grimdark feeling of the setting. The problem is when you're *watching* a story instead of actually *experiencing* it. That's when it goes from a story in a video game to oscar bait in video game form.
I feel like it's all about how involved the game makes us feel. I don't like many cinematic games but i loved witcher 3 because it made me feel involved even when I was doing a fetch quest.
What about games with microtransactions, loot boxes and battle royals? The stories are more detailed nowadays, so they can reach the casual gamers as well. Just because you are the kind of person that wants only action without exposition in video games, this doesn't mean that Last of Us ruined gaming. Check the market now. Most of the games that are released have multiple DLCs at outrageous prices, microtransactions are involved, and they also have bad gameplay.
Personally I don't fully 100% agree with this. I think for some games it definitely did with how much they tried taking inspiration from Last Of Us, but for others I don't think it did. I personally don't think God Of War was one of them, because by the time Ascension came out, people were getting tired of the series as it was started to just be more of same. It wasn't bad, but people were growing tired of it. They had to try something different, and so they took a chance and it worked. If you didn't like it then that's fine, but part of me will always be slightly annoyed when people say modern gaming is dying when there are plenty of games out that could give you exactly what you're looking for, whether it be a AAA game or even an indie title. End of the day, the idea of whether a game is fun or not is still subjective, and you just hage to realize what you're willing to tolerate. Maybe I'm a glass half full type of guy.
I personally like cinematic games with story focus and I kind of like słower elements in them I just enjoy it, I want to chill and have good time while playing. And I understand that everyone can have their own opinions and like diffrent games but I'm tired of people attacking me how I'm apparently destroying gaming because I like rdr2, god of war 2018, the last of us etc more than souls games like elden ring for example.
@TheTom20 damn, rlly sorry you got attacked js for the things you like in gaming. Although I wish there was more diversity in gaming rather than just "hyper realistic ultra cinematic games with tedious walking sections", no one should be shunned for their preference in games. Also, microtransactions and greed is killing gaming, not slower paced games imo
We don't play movies, we play TV series. Melodrama, drawn out for several seasons. The film lasts on average 2 hours. They remove it in 1-2 years. It takes 2 years to shoot a 2 hour film. Games can't compete with movies, and they shouldn't. Yes, let there be projects like TLOU, Detroid, but in portions. And look how much time it takes to play 1 game.

Bro isn’t onto something he’s on something
It´s really wild how he keeps focusing on the camera as if thats what makes the gameplay the gameplay lol
He keeps calling the games movie games as if combat doesn´t exist or level design, or even exploration (which i can understand for some games like TLOU but... Days Gone? Horizon? God of War? all of those games are open levels and open worlds with a big focus on exploration.
TLOU is ab amazing game and it's successor is even better in my opinion. Gow just keeps getting better even after the reboot. Etc
@@salo37 the only thing I think they should improve is replayability, in GOW it's way worse, between having to go through tight spaces (which is a thing I wish was dead, because it serves nothing but delay the story and gameplay) and having to go through all of Ironwood again (why isn't there an option to skip?).

Trust me... with the movies and shows coming out, the best storytelling is in these games

Adding a different style of gameplay would ultimately stretch a game like TLOU thin. This is because, considering the purpose of the game, it would break immersion. Like I said, different games appeal to different parts of the mind. The definition of a game does not have to be so rigid as to exclude people like me.
Literally being LOU in those moments lol
On the other hand, FF7 Remake and Rebirth have such good and complex core gameplay while at the same time having the presentation of movie, I keep coming back to them over and over.
@@IAmAtAldicacodemon yeah I 100% agree
We don't play movies, we play TV series. Melodrama, drawn out for several seasons. The film lasts on average 2 hours. They remove it in 1-2 years. It takes 2 years to shoot a 2 hour film. Games can't compete with movies, and they shouldn't. Yes, let there be projects like TLOU, Detroid, but in portions. And look how much time it takes to play 1 game. I don't want to spend 150 hours on each game.
4:05 Sonic Forces Reference?!?!?!? 🤯
