- Here we go...Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics takes a road trip to Staten Island, NYC!
A huge thanks to Keith DeFazio of New Level Auto for inviting me to tag along and see how a professional mobile automotive diagnostician operates. I learned an incredible amount in three days.
Luckily, sometime during the hectic 14-hour work days I managed to get a bit of awesome video footage of live diagnostics. If I recorded every car that we worked on, one typical 20-car day would provide several months of prime case study material! Insanity!
Anyways, I'll post the clips in chronological order...well mostly :)
So welcome aboard and enjoy your ride on the "Staten Island Express"!
I was Mobile from 2003 to 2014 in Ann Arbor, in the beginning I was the only guy within 50 miles. I put in countless hours on the road and loved it! I had everything in my van Generator, Welder, Compressor, work bench etc etc...I had a lot of accounts including the security vehicles at the Detroit Metro Airport. Working on all vehicles really steps up your game. Thank you Ivan for all of your Platinum level educating videos. Hope I get to meet you someday and shake your hand.
Ivan, just watching some older videos of yours (3 yrs old / its dec 2019 now) Enjoying these older posts. Trying to get caught up. Great info and diagnoses as always. Thanks!
Ah yes the Grand National! I'm currently organizing the entire PHAD catalog into "playlists" for easier browsing :)
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics, sort into playlists? Could be good especially for non subscribers looking for a particular repair idea! Thanks as always for all your posts. Learn something every time!
I like UR humility
Many Many Many Many years ago, an ancestor of mine captained the Staten Island ferry boat.
the Grand National must be a long diagnosis?
Keith is the man!!
i love your videos
I called it. As soon as I saw the ground was dancing all over the place I though bad PCM. Thank god they are fairly easy to get cheap second hand units.
Where was the ground dancing all over the place? Nothing wrong with the grounds in this case...
Ivan that was great, But what a Tess start with one and then switching like that.
I want that grand national
Good diagnosis with the computer, but how do you know for sure that the IAC isn't dirty too ???
common problem on the engines
Just across the bridge Ivan ! How's nyc treating you? Besides the infamous Staten Island traffic and smell
Traffic yes , but that smell wafts in from those Jersey people 😆
They just sprayed cow manure here on the farm...makes Staten Island smell like roses XD
The Crustys win again! But you found them. LOL. HEy Ivan.... I hate teasers....
Would silicone on the seals help keep them fresh to keep the moisture out?
Silicone paste/grease yes, silicone sealer no.
Silicone paste/grease will not prevent the corrosion for very long either, it will breakdown in the presence of brake fluid, corrosive salts/deicers and moisture/water.
Adding a polyethylene/polypropylene shield is about the best long term protection.
*RELOCATE PCM TO INTERIOR*
Help me Kia was driving park and won’t turn over tried to put in N did not want to move lights turn on radio works but car won’t start kia forte 2010

Wow!!!! Ivan you were NYC, my home town and I wasn't there.. When ever you come back I would like to tag along on one of your mobile calls. Nice job with the van!! As soon as you said TPS was fine and you said lets go under the hood, I knew where u was going, reminded me of scannerdanner's case study the PCM was completely rotted away. I can imagine what the one in this van looks like.
the GMC has a MAF sensor and a MAP sensor????
Way cool video Ivan...tell Keith thanks for letting us ride "The Staten Island Express".
my pleasure, plenty more rides to come I'm sure
I think Keith is slowly warming up to this whole UA-cam thing eh?
+motoYam82 Humbug
a little rubbing compound on that VW bus......good as new !
Wow, 15 a day? That's crazy but ka-ching! You made a tough call but it seems to be correct by your scanner data. I'm impressed by your skills.
Made with attention... consumable society.
15 calls a day on a slow day, wonder what the per call number is. I am guessing he does not do all the repairs himself? No signage on his van? Was it the white one? Good example of what one would see in the real world, lots of shops, no time for DX, farm it out and do the brakes, ball joints, etc. 4 wheel brake job, would pay lots more than this, so you as a mobile tech have to have a game plan, good tools, lots of scanners, and impress the shop owner so you get the call back. great job Ivan
John Anello is who I think about when it comes to Mobile Diagnostics. He use to sell classes, $1500/week, you as a technician would ride with him on his typical day and he would teach and allow you to learn from one of the best. We tried to do that with John Thornton in Chicago, but no go with JohnT. Anello does not do the 1 week classes anymore, but I have been to class with couple guys that says it was worth the money spent. John does do stuff on TST. I have been watching you a while Ivan. You are getting better in the field, as far as teaching. That is the important aspect to us techs who want a different perspective from someone with a highly technical back ground, schooling, and how one can take those skills to diagnosing cars in the field in a fast, not throw parts at it, prove the thought process way. Keep it up!
Nothing like jumping in the deep end-------good progress so far.
Can't wait to see the grand national
might be possible to make a shield slightly larger than body of comp. use piece of plastic cut from cover of storage bin for example. attach with a little flexible sealant. awesome video ivan. good direction u r going with this. would not hurt to carry some mace. this would go for most any place these days.
good one ivan, seen these aplenty... used roofing felt to keep the water at a minimum from intruding the pcm. seems the corrosion jacks the seal and its a goner.
Great video Ivan. I've seen this in the past. What happened to the Grand National? Looks like you had a lot of fun.
Grand National is still in progress. A follow-up trip is in the works :)
Yes i would also like to see ivan fix it he can.
+Eddie Martinez Hello Eddie. I see you watch a lot of the same channels that I do.
***** You must watch eric on SMA as well as scannerdanner?
+Eddie Martinez I do
Hey Ivan ! Welcome to my home town ! Wish I knew you were coming , would have been cool to hang out for a minute ! Hey , maybe you and Eric and come on down sometime ! Hard core diagnostics as usual ! 👍
Actually I'm visiting Staten Island this week now until Thursday!
Young Jedi
Very nice diagnostics of the TPS circuit Ivan. Hopefully, you'll be able to show Keith on camera as he says like a pretty nice guy.
why does the mass air flow sensor read 2.75 grams per sec with the key on and engine off? ive always wondered that.... gm series 2 3800 cars do the same thing....
forgot about the air to keep the comp. from getting too hot. u could still use spacers made from small pieces of wood.
thx for the video...I'm learning myself to help others...I can't find the site new level auto...kind help pls...thx
Man Ivan if you would watch the channel Schrodinger's Box you would have know you could have found that with a visual inspection haha. Great find man!
Oh yeah this old girl was crusty inside and out...hard to miss with a visual inspection ;)
😅😅😅
One thing I have learned is that 90 percent of the time the problem is either aftermarket garbage or a bad module. The other 10 percent is annoying intermittent problems that you can't reproduce 😜
aftermarket garbage.... ahhhh music to my ears
Great video Ivan. Enjoy nyc
Good old GM trends! cool video Ivan!
eric smith iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiuuuuuuuiuuûuyyyyyyyyyyuuyyyyuy
good video ...as eric o says .always start with a good visual inspection.
Excellent example of raw versus processed data. Can't always rely on the scan tool data, although it pointed you to use a scope on the component for verification. Good job Ivan.
Ivan passed the test for sure.
Let's just say the learning curve was pretty much a vertical wall
Great video Ivan!
Great tip on loading the ground like that, using the test light to load the signal wire how are you sure it only receives 5v? (as measured) and not any more?
Always nice to learn how another tech diagnoses vehicles and learn from each other. Sounds like you are having fun and picked up a very valuable friend to share data with.
That is the pace of NYC for you. If you make it to Coney Island next time let me know and we'll ride go karts and have a beer. That is if you are into doing that with someone you never meet before. :)
gm engineer: "where can i put the pcm for this van? i know! i'll put it in the engine compartment, right below the brake master cylinder. nothing could possibly go wrong!"
Engineers pfft... 😜
Yep crazy like they wanted it to fail???
thats why i don't own a gm vehicle!!!!!! that is why i own a Ford!!!!!
hey I have a master's degree in electrical engineering but I'm lacking in common sense😂
"After you've thrown a TPS sensor at it..." Hahahahaha
LOL. That's what I would have done without a scope. Got one on order. Not gonna be a parts changer anymore.
Changing the PCM is still "changing parts" but at least it's the *_correct_* part.
"Plugs and wires!" LOL.
what the Hell those engineer at gm were thinking
*PLANNED OBSOLESENCE*
after looking closely it appears there is not enuf room for shield spaced above comp. what a bunch of phucknuts at these car companies.
Wow, man- gotta love them *SOUTHERN* cars, huh? Static electricity+salt air+water=electroplating.
this is really good content Ivan. please let us know what else you've learned while on this adventure !
Pac man ghost cruzers for ur varus. Lol. Ehhhh
Ivan, get away from Staten Island as fast as you can!
Why?
S.I. has become a very dangerous place because of crime and drugs. I know you can't hide from it but S.I. has a major problem.
+John C couldn't we say that about just about any city? Where are you from?
Staten Island.
lol it kind of started growing on me after the third day! Good food and great people (most of them), but not enough elbow room for a country boy like me :)
Boy did you shoot to the "cut" fast ! I don't know if you'll be able to fix that Grand National? ! Seems like it'll be a bit too much for a country tech. Unless of course your ready for another go at it 😉
Ivan has the skill to pay the bills he can fix it and he has eric at SMA to back him up.
+Eddie Martinez hear that Ivan , you're gonna have to live up to his expectations now !
He can do it.
Alright Keith, let's fire up that parts cannon! What's the customer's budget on the Buick? XD
This one will require the hardcore scientific approach and maybe even the dreaded whiteboard...
motoYam82 No ivan not that!!!
Airfilter.
Click bait! LOL I wanted to see the Grand National.
Good video Ivan. But you've got to steady that camera some how. You are making me sea sick
