  • Which is Faster 1968 AMX or 1969 AMC SCRambler ??
    @Road Test TV
    Two Old school muscle cars go head to head in a 1/4 mile drag race. Both cars are competing in the Pure Stock Drags, so modifications are limited to porting, blue printing and minor weight reduction without altering the stock appearance. That means stock intake manifold, stock exhaust manifolds and street tires.
    The rare and little known muscle cars in the the video were built by the now defunct American Motors Corporation (AMC). AMC was known for making 4 door sedans and station wagons, so these 390 cubic inch, 4 speed, posi rear beasts were a departure from AMC's family car formula.
    The 69 SC/Rambler is the video is powered by AMC's 390 cubic inch V8 rated at 315 horsepower, is backed by a 4 speed manual transmission and a 4.10 posi rear.
    The 1968 AMX in the other lane was also built by the now defunct American Motors Corporation (AMC). This particular AMX is also powered by AMC's potent 390 cubic inch V8 rated at 315 horsepower and backed by a 4 speed manual transmission. The AMX has a 3.91 posi rear.
    AMC vs AMC, 390 vs 390, 4 speed vs 4 speed, 3.91 vs 4.10, so, WHO WINs? Watch the video and see what happens.

    Back in 74 when I was stationed at Travis AFB CA, someone on the base had 2 of the 68 hurst ramblers. He used to park them in front of the 916th SAC squadron HQ. At the time, I had no idea these things were going to become so rare and valuable.

    I remember the good old days when cars like that roamed the street with GTO's, 442's, Mustangs, Camaro's, Barracuda's and Chevelle's. (The list goes on and on) Was a good time to be a car nut.

      I'm with you. I just read your comment, and realized I wrote almost the exact same thing. My cousin sold his 1971 Buick GS 455 Stage 1 convertible in 1991. Red with white top, white interior, and automatic on the floor with console for 5k. All original, including wheels, and correct air cleaner. I think they only made 81 that year. I didn't even know it was for sale, or I would have definitely bought it. I still pour salt on his wound everytime I see him. Then he reminds me about selling my 66 Fastback GT four speed. Then we both cry together.

    All things being equal, the 200 lbs difference in weight equates to approximately 0.20 in et (1/10th of a second per 100 lbs of weight).....the "lighter" car did win, but 0.60 in time and 5 mph difference in speed was probably more motor hp than weight or a combo of both......that SC/Rambler had a little more balls than the average "stock" SC/Rambler.....love to see AMC's hilighted on this channel......keep them coming!

      The SC/Rambler actually has 400 hp. You saw the jump by the Javelin and he got ran down. RAN down. AMC had factory drag packs... ALL SC/Ramblers had a hot cam and higher gears

    • @FIRE-WOOD
      @FIRE-WOOD 2 роки тому

      @net-rioter Not ALL SC/Ramblers had hotter cams and bigger gears...LOL....they COULD be dealer installed from the Group 19 catalog but they DIDN'T come from the factory like that.....You COULD order 2.87-5.00 gearsets....Edelbrock r4b manifold....Holley 3 barrel carb....Doug Thorley headers, etc. I have a '69 AMX (bought in 1982) that has several Group 19 parts that the original owner (I'm the 2nd owner) got installed at the dealer....it runs 12.80's all day long....so like I said the SC/Rambler pictured had a weight advantage for sure and a bit more HP than the AMX.....no disrespect I'm an AMC guy and the SC/Rambler is one of my favorite AMC along with the Rebel Machine, and SC/Hornet 360

      @@FIRE-WOOD i just finished watching a youtube video of the guy who did the hurst cars and he's trying to sell the RTS cuda, rapid transit system car that he built back in 71. He was the same guy who did the sc ramblers which was a surprise to me. Its interesting to hear him talk about how he did the mods for hurst and hurst would take them to the mfg's and they would either approve or disapprove for production these mods he came up with. For the scrambler he came up with a decal over the glass which amc disapproved but they kept his other mods

    One of my friends had a gold AMX in Highschool back in 1980 with a 390/4 speed. But getting a muscle car then was easy. There were dozens of em running around, and for cheap. 69 Camaros, 442's, G.T.O.'s, Mustangs. You name it. I had a numbers matching 66 Fastback Mustang G.T., with a Hurst 4 speed, valance exhaust, fold down rear seats, foglamps, and the original radio. It was maroon with lower side white stripes, with the GT badges. Bought it from an elderly man that had it in his garage since new. Then, I really had no clue what I owned. I knew I had made a mistake though. When I watched the new owner I sold it to, drive off in 1987. It was in mint condition, and dont ask me what I sold it for, or I will start crying again.

    Great video!! I love my AMC. Just like my Dad's SC/Rambler. He ran 12.80 with slicks leaving at 4500rpm. With group 19 performance intake n headers. With a cute 625cfm carb. Remember these stock times were with crap of a tire bias ply tires. If the 60s n 70s cars had modern rubber there times wood change dramatically in every aspect.braking,handling,accelerating 1/4 mile.older cars handled like crap cs of there tire technology. Tires really make a big difference.

She was a rustbucket, dark blue...5.00 gears and a 500 hp 390. Removable wheelie bars. Bought it for 1200 in 91. No interior or heater. That damn thing would make the rear bumper spark...did high 9s,low 10s..Sold it for 2 grand in 93. They sell for 6 figures now with the factory drag packs. NHRA racing class website says the 69 Rambler Scrambler, 3050 lb. That's with side guard door beams. I would have though the 375 HP 1967 Camaro because it has no door beams and an aluminum intake. But the 396 weighs 110 lb more than the AMC 390, which is really a small block, and weighs the same as a Chevy small block. All Scramblers were light, no options other than a radio were offered. I'm only including factory cars with over 380 cubes built in numbers of at least 1,000. No acid dipped, aluminum block racers.

      @@oigeeeni Well Nova's didn't get a big block 396 until 68, that was a bit heavier than the earlier models and had side guard door beams. The 67 Camaro SS396 was just a little lighter, no door beams which saved a good 50 lb. NHRA has the 68 Nova 375 hp at 3,275lb, the 67 Camaro 375 hp at 3,161 lb.
