On the flip side, I find it fun shooting JPEG only sometimes and having that permanent fixed shot as for me it somewhat simulates the delicateness of shooting film

That's excellent advice. As an editorial designer, it's always important in a printed publication to have photos with consistent colors and exposures despite them being from different photographers. I'll pull my hair if a photographer turns in with filtered jpegs. RAW + JPEG is the way, JPEG for the now and RAW for your present and future self

In my opinion, anything can be solved by shooting RAW+JPEG (although I wish we would have switched to PNG in those modern times).
Sometimes, I just want to be inspired and play with the recipe. It’s taking the present moment.
I don’t really like revisiting old pictures, I have closure with them. It shows my state of mind on the moment, my life and such.
And if I don’t like the JPEG, I can just edit the RAW on Lightroom on PC, or mobile if a want a quick share :)
I’m a Fuji and Ricoh user, recipes have change my photography because I go out more to take random things, which help document my life and my surroundings without having to work a lot for it.

100% agree! Not only do trends change, the photographer's software and skillset may improve, thus resulting in a new image that is very different from the way is was done originally. Impossible without RAW.
The question is, if you can accept taking pictures at that very moment the way you wanted to take them at that moment. I hate editing. And I do not want to change images from years back with a new mindset. So for me choosing JPG is a decision against flexibility, but capturing images in the way I felt at that very moment. A time capsule.
I am by no means a pro photographer, digital art creator or anything like that, so my income does not depend on photography.
I shoot purely for my own pleasure. And I create my own recipes to suit my shooting style.
BTW I also shoot with prime lenses and NEVER had a thought like missing out on shots I do not have the focal length for at the time.
Again, I think it is a question of accepting circumstances, living with limitations. I like it.
If a photographer needs maximum flexibility for any reason, JPG recipes are not for that crowd.

The Fuji x100v has one major advantage over the Ricoh gr3x: their desktop application, X Raw Studio, allows you to save dozens of picture profiles, and even if they are not uploaded to the camera, you can use them for quick RAW development. I miss this feature in the gr3 because sometimes you want to check how several different picture profiles will look on a particular picture, but you can only do this from the camera level, where we have only 3*2 conveniently accessible slots ;(
You can do that in adobe camera raw?
Up to now with my smartphone camera, i tend to shot jpeg only for street photography, jpeg & raw for landscape or city scape where i think I have the concept for processing
I switched to jpeg. Not going back. I had hundreds of unedited pics that gave me stress. Now I just upload the pictures and call it a day. I may do some quick adjustment here and there. Of course these are only for my personal use.
I think shooting film for a while influenced me. The funny thing is that jpeg brings that back: choose the filter well, expose well. You can still shoot a lot… but I don’t like to cull all the pictures afterwards so I try to shoot just enough.
One app I like to use on my phone is Hipstamatic. I’ve used one set of filter for years now. I love it and I’d love to replicate it on my x100 now.

Just wondering if you've ever worked on any Fuji recipes for yourself and if you have ever shared any of them?
As a complete newbie, I like the idea of being able to concentrate on one thing first (subject and composition) and not having to learn another skill (editing). Plus, as a perfectionist who is more often than not paralized by the amount of choices and second-guessing possible, it can be really liberating to COMMIT and not be able to always go back and change details.
for that, I'd recommend a JPEG that looks like reality with proper white balance. A JPEG that won't have a "look" that would potentially age after a while, cheers

Reasons I shoot jpegs (plus RAW) these days:
I've actually stopped working as a fulltime photographer and only accept work from time to time. I mostly do photography for myself therefore am unable to justify the monthly subscription for an editing software. Since Fujifilm allows me to get the look I want in-camera, I never go back to the RAW files. Maybe in the future when I am able to justify a capture one subscription I'll go back to them.
The other reason is more nostalgia than anything as it reminds me of my film days. I used to choose a film stock (now recipe, of which I only have 3 saved including a monochrome) and whatever happened happened. I focused more on getting a great composition.

Dark table is free. It has a bit of a curve to learn but it’s extremely powerful.

I started actually shooting for the first time while in Japan recently, and I found myself already doing the "not taking the shot" choice a lot after a week or two. I got some really good pics with incredible light walking from Yotsuya to Shibuya my first few days there, and I used those and all the photos I've seen from youtubers such as yourself as benchmarks and found myself summarizing a scene real quick and finding it too subpar to shoot. I think that might be a bad approach for a beginner, but after a lot of street photography online consumption, I think I had a better idea of those "it" shots and what comprises of a good scene worth shooting. It was an interesting feeling to have toward my shots during the day while shooting and already having that feel of what is or isn't a standout amongst the moments of the day you encounter. Sometimes I missed a scene that would have been perfect by seconds and I felt so sad about it as well.
It is really difficult to do but we should forget any standards, the one we create for ourselves and the ones coming from internet/social medias. Following our instinct and shoot and shoot and shoot. That's totally normal even for experienced photographer to have super low hit rate and if we don't accept that we're at risk of not shooting enough to refine our craft further and actually getting good photos
I am absolutely the shooting focused photographer you described. I find recipes a bit too extreme for my taste, so I try to stay as natural and subtle as possible and get it "right" in camera. Mostly because I have no idea how to inject soul or personality into my raw edits at all. I have never spent enough time to develop a consistent personal style - and I feel like I'm missing out, but don't know where to start.
Every time I look at my edit and the jpeg my Canon/Ricoh spits out, I prefer the jpeg. I need to put more experience points into editing. 😂
Haha right but I really found your point interesting so I included it in the video. Editing is another skill that needs time to get good at. I think it is really worth it but I get it that some people don't like it at all
@@adriensanguinetti You're right though, it is worth it. It would be great to have a sense of intentionality and signature to my images, and not rely on the camera to give me that look like old photographers choosing a film roll.

I really like the fujifilm because of their film simulations but I like the Ricoh more because autofocus is better. Would I be able to get Fuji sims on the Ricoh?

Very curious as to how seamless your Image Sync experience is...mine is always very slow and janky. Meaning, sometimes the photos load and sometimes it doesn't. Anyone else?
I rarely use it but it is not great ^^' slightly better than the Sony app for example though
