I just purchased my Burkart Resona with a Wave Style Headjoint earlier this summer and have fallen in love with it. Such a quality sound for such a good price.
Your reviews are the best I've seen in UA-cam, seriously. You're very clear. I also like that you're transparent by saying that you earn a small comission when someone uses your code. I think everyone knows that, but you're being transpararent. I really appreciate all your videos :) Regards from Argentina!
I own this picc with traditional style headjoint. I did try both before purchasing, and my backup instrument has the wave style. I bought it when it was called Global. I am very pleased with this instrument. It solved most of my frustrations with piccolo playing, chief of which is TUNING! Over a period of two years I finally developed trust that it’s ok and better to play with headjoint pulled out quite a bit. Unlike with my Powell flute, this picc does have some notes and ranges that I have to adjust for pitch fairly significantly, but it is actually quite easy to adjust them and still maintain wonderful tone quality and color capability. I finally had some repair issues after about 5 years of ownership and crazy psycho instrument care (I am very afraid of owning a wooden instrument in Colorado), but nothing that is not achievable by a good technician. I do highly recommend this instrument. It is capable of a high-level professional sound for an attainable price.
Loved this review! Can we see the new Powell Sonaré and Signature piccolo? I would also love to see the Burkart professional piccolo. I heard they are some of the best piccolos on the market!
I already have a pearl pfp-165 but the resona piccolo was a really great choice but I found it a bit too expensive for me because i'm only a sophomore in high school and I wouldn't be playing it much, but now i'm kinda considering getting one thanks to your wonderful review!
I started high school in 2007 and I didn't know about Burkart until about 2010 but that was because I did Miami-Dade College Honor Band and the lady who eventually became my teacher in the early years of my undergrad had a poster of Jim Walker in her studio. I've heard good things about Burkart. Fun Fact: Emma Resmini and Gina Luciani both play on a Burkart Piccolo. I really like the Traditional head joint on this piccolo😃❤️🎶🎼🎹
Very good review. Actually I have this piccolo with the wave head joint an it is interesting to compare with the other one which I never play with. You described your feeling with some terms I never heard before. Very interesting. Could you review the Nagahara mini since it is a very special flute/piccolo and it comes with a lot of optional head joint and choice of wood?
i came across this video as i was researching because i've finally decided to replace the piccolo i've been using since MIDDLE SCHOOL (aka WAY too long ago lol) anyway, my name is also joanna!! and i have that same poro plush in the background (is that in an ikea shelf? because then that's also something we have in common LOL)!! (don't have any poro stress balls unfortunately, but do have a bard meep and maokai sapling stress ball!) just wanted to share the coincidences!
I have a metal piccolo and I used to play on my schools wood composite piccolo but it broke. But from my experience yes. Wooden piccolos require a lot more control. For me at least. When I played on the wooden one it was much harder to play higher notes
High notes aren't necessarily harder on either. For a beginner, High notes are going to be difficult in general. The Yamaha picc with the metal headjoint (ypc32) is what I believe you're talking about. These have a metal headjoint, which is a far bigger gap than the difference between wood and plastic. High notes are harder to play beautifully on metal piccs, but with practice, both should work well
does anyone know what it means when they say burkart scale? because i’ve seen it with other brands but im not sure if it has to do with the tuning or just the way the piccolo was built…
These are very much different. Dynamics is how loud something is. Tone color is the way a note sounds. This is in respect, for example, between two different flute players. 2 players can easily play the same dynamic, but 2 players have wildly different tone color. Tone color is basically how a certain note sounds but not it's tuning, rather it's feel
When I started playing C8 on piccolo, I just thought it was expected to be able to be played... So I practiced it so very much. I can just about get it on even Chinese made piccolos. Harmonics too. I just treated the piccolo as the "mini flute" and I expected to be able to play all the same harmonics as on the flute
Zachary Coronado this was me too, I even practiced long tones all the way up 😭 im a flute performance major after 2 years I’ve had to play exaclty one high C on flute, and one on piccolo, both in band with optional 8va. It never dawned on me how rare and hard it is to play the C8 well
The embouchure shape in The piccolo is different. Approximate the upper lip to the hjoint and close the lips to to make a tiny embouchure. On the flute is wider. I use a wave, a lot easier for doublist. Use less Vibrato and look for ressonance, it will gain in dynamics and control.
Which piccolo would you suggest for a college student living in a dorm? My daughter plays the flute and started playing the piccolo a couple of years ago at the request of her high school band director. He gave her a school piccolo (metal) to use. She would like to bring a piccolo with her to college, in addition to her flute. She will be studying science and might join a music ensemble as an extra curricular activity. She is not a music student. With that background, would you recommend the Burkhart or is it too delicate for dorm life? Is there a quality piccolo that is a touch less expensive and maybe more hearty? Thanks for your help.
I would say this really depends on her level of playing! And also what kind of ensemble she would like to join. I think, for amateur musicians a piccolo like the Pearl 105 or 165, Yamaha 62 (only with a headjoint upgrade like Mancke or Fischer) and maybe the Powell Sonaré are cheaper alternatives to Burkart (though the Yamaha is quite overpriced in the US). I would probably wait with purchasing a piccolo unti your daughter joined an ensemble to see how much piccolo she will be playing in the end because if she only plays piccolo once every month or so I personally would not invest into a Burkart. Also: Let her try out as many as possible because especially for piccolo it is crucial that the instrument fits the players needs!
Hay JAF I'm in high school and my band director told me I need to start playing piccolo but I'm having major trouble do you have any tips in general or maybe on piccolo embouchure
Yes. Absolutely. High notes sound like intolerant screams on a metal instrument. Wood piccolos are much more pleasant sounding. Metal piccolos are great for outdoors where sound quality doesn't matter. Don't play a wood piccolo outdoors
Zachary Coronado thank you for the advice! i'm just starting to learn piccolo for my high school band/marching band. I was switching between a wooden one and a metal one since not all the instrument are back for being fixed, I was really confused with how they differed besides what they were made of :) thanks again! :))
metal ones produce a sharper sound that cuts through the noisy brass like trumpets, which makes it suitable for outdoor bands as other instruments will usually drown out the flute. wood is not advisable for outdoor due to it's sensitivity to temperature causing cracks.
I play the flute and my teacher isn't an actual teacher so she doesn't know how to play the piccolo, do u think I would be able to get a piccolo and teach myself? I'm basically asking is it the same as a flute 😂👍🏻
Eve Marie it's the same fingerings(there are some alternates to make it more in tune) but the embouchure of your mouth is different so it takes a while to adjust
You get what you pay for. It sounds so wonderful compared to cheaper pics and easier to get top notes with more tone. I can only get 2 octives on my cheap pic.

Hey Joanna thanks for the piccolo review you did great keep up the good work
+Nuxes101 Games Thank you so much!!
Loved this review! Can we see the new Powell Sonaré and Signature piccolo? I would also love to see the Burkart professional piccolo. I heard they are some of the best piccolos on the market!
THANK YOU FOR THIS REVIEW! I am planning on buying this piccolo soon!
+Karina Montanez That's wonderful, you'll love it!
This was so helpful! I am currently looking at piccolos through flute center of new york and I was looking at this particular model.
Can you review alto flute that would be interesting to see... Can you review the di zhao 700?
+hunt artist 3 On the list!
Definitely would be nice to see a dizhao 700 review!
I love these reviews so much
+Ryan Clever I'm so glad! I hope you enjoy this one!
True piccolo players will burst into stars and stripes at random times, have you ever done this.... because I have... its embarassing sometimes

I really like these piccolo videos please do more!!
+CamTV Haha, definitely on the list 😉
When you were looking for a new piccolo I’m surprised you didn’t end up getting a Resona cause you sounded really well on them.
I got a piccolofrom fcny a few weeks ago! They are really helpful! :)
I'm just learning flute and piccolo, and you are the reason why I love it!!
Thanks! Had no idea Burkhart was run by a woman, great stuff. Just lost my piccolo due to moth-eaten pads, so this was good to watch :P
Ruined pads aren't the end of the world
A repad is so much cheaper than a new piccolo
Can you do a review on the sankyo flute cf 401 and 501??? Thanks for all your videos, they're really informative and helpful :)
Why can a flute walk? Cuz it has a FOOT JOINT
I watched your day in the life of a college flutist, and I was like "Omg Joanna is so professional and beautiful!!"
+The Tabletop Mage D'awww, thank you!!
+The Tabletop Mage Also, YES TO THE PUN 😂
JustAnotherFlutist Lol. Btw maybe you should do a rant video.
I mean, it's only one foot. Flutes can hop.
I started high school in 2007 and I didn't know about Burkart until about 2010 but that was because I did Miami-Dade College Honor Band and the lady who eventually became my teacher in the early years of my undergrad had a poster of Jim Walker in her studio. I love these reviews!! Hopefully I can save up for a piccolo because I think these sound good!
+Brittany West They're such a joy to play!
Hey can you do a piccolo LefreQue video, I've been looking into it but I'm not sure if I want to get one yet. If you could that would be fantastic! :)
I really love your videos! I'm a clarinet player, but being a music nerd myself, I nerd out in every video!
Also, grenidella wood is really THE wood instrument wood
+Gianna Magrino Siiiiiigh, grenadilla 😍

Yayay! Been waiting forever for this review!!
These videos make my day

just wanted to share the coincidences!
I have mine with the wave headjoint and love it.
Hey, sorry for disturbing you, but do you mind reviewing Di Zhao intermediate/professional flutes ( Di Zhao 400 and up ) thanks
Thanks for this demo and review!
think you'll do a live stream again sometime soon (or a flute with mom)?
You should do like 2 of these 4 piccolos, or as many as you want, nagahara mini piccolo #73,#85,#103 or #105 PPLLLLEEEEEAAAASSEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!😦😦😦😦😦😦
Is it harder to get out top notes on a wooden picc like these compared to say the plastic/resin Yamaha piccolo?
I have a metal piccolo and I used to play on my schools wood composite piccolo but it broke. But from my experience yes. Wooden piccolos require a lot more control. For me at least. When I played on the wooden one it was much harder to play higher notes

+Zachary Coronado well I must be fairly decent at picc coz I can get my high notes out better than Joanna
does anyone know what it means when they say burkart scale? because i’ve seen it with other brands but im not sure if it has to do with the tuning or just the way the piccolo was built…
How do you use faster air without using more? I want to still have a great tone and play soft without having to sacrifice the fast air stream.
btw i can play the 5th harmonic on D with my pic
Hi Joanna, I just bought a new piccolo and some one said they need to be broken in. Really? What does that mean.
Julia
Indirect kiss am I right?
can you review the Di Zhao 500?
+Adalia Arellano On the list!
Thanks:)
Could you review the Roy Seaman Storm piccolo? Or other cheaper piccolos like gemeinhardt?
Why do they send the swab and polishing cloth if they do not want you to use it..?
Number11 because of the trial period. Incase u want to send it back
Hello Joanna !!! Tú me recomiendas éste Piccolo Resona ? Gracias , saludos desde Argentina .
Forgive my silly question, but what is the real difference between 'tone colour' and 'dynamics'. It seems pretty much the same thing, for me...
These are very much different.
Dynamics is how loud something is.

Please review the hamming piccolo thin modified wave head joint and the Yamaha 81R piccolo
can you make a video playing "capriccio in d major" by Kerr Elert and "D minor" by anderson??
Can you do a review on the LefreQue?
When I started playing C8 on piccolo, I just thought it was expected to be able to be played...
So I practiced it so very much. I can just about get it on even Chinese made piccolos.
Harmonics too. I just treated the piccolo as the "mini flute" and I expected to be able to play all the same harmonics as on the flute

I tried this piccolo with a wave cut at a music store and I found it was an absolute dream to play. Sadly it was a bit to far out of my budget.
so basically every flute yt I have watched has been sponsored by flute center of New York :0
Love this review!

Please do Haynes Amadeus flutes!!! its the last step up/ intermediate flute brand you havent done a review of please tnx😄

@@thoregulden4545 Thanks so much!
Watching these review videos makes me feel like I bought theses instruments myself. Hehe
Hay JAF I'm in high school and my band director told me I need to start playing piccolo but I'm having major trouble do you have any tips in general or maybe on piccolo embouchure
Hold the piccolo up slightly higher than the flute on the lip.
Have a very concentrated "laser" airstream
taylor michaud Don't clench up, also.
Can you review a metal piccolo? Something cheap for students?
+Gianna Magrino There was an amazing one that apparently William Bennett played! I'll see if we can track down some real quality ones for you guys 😊
Thank you!! 😀
If you use the coupon code JAF would you have to pay for the return shipping?
Youd have to pay for it when you take it out on trial, but youll get the money back, when you order it for real.

James SIggs Thank you ❤️🎼
I did it.
My band director refused to play the piccolo so I had to teach myself
Zachary Coronado tysm 👍🏻
can you compare a di zhao alto flute to another brand of alto? or more than one brand?
Pretty
Nagahara Flute, Standard and Concert model!!!!
Don't even get me started on wood instruments cracking (I'm a clarinet/flute/Piano player) 😂
I love you so much ❤❤
+Achuth Raghu Love you too!
I just started playing the piccolo comment squad and tips
YEESSSS
Double tonguing... :3
Yay Resona Piccolo!! 💙💙
Hehe! 😊
JustAnotherFlutist powell also used to work for Haynes ☺️
Oh I wish my section leader last year saw this video before she got her cleaning rod stuck her in piccolo
That’s so expensive 😀😳
