Choosing an instrument, whether it be a backup instrument or not, is a very personal thing. Nobody has the right to tell you which instrument you should choose, or when you should reveal the choice you have made for yourself. It's YOUR choice! Congratulations on your new baby! May you have many years of joyful music making together!

thank you so much for sharing this story! often people try to "force" their way of thinking on others to justify their beliefs and thoughts.
playing an instrument is such an individual experience and certain instruments that work for a large amount of people, will not necessarily work for you.
    much love and support! ♥🤗

Wonderful, thoughtful video. It is true, I suppose, that it isn’t helpful to tell ask someone why didn’t you try or to to comment that you really should have tried something different after you have already made your decision. It’s actually rather rude or maybe, thoughtless.
[I remember someone doing this re where I had gone for cancer treatment - it made me quite anxious and sad. FYI I am a long term survivor--but, still? ]
Lovely video articulating about you flute headjoint wood and how it’s made of the same wood as your piccolo, that it resonates in the front of your mouth (no one ever brought up this concept with me - how brilliant, truly!)
Thank you for your post. Another “nerdy” flutist here.❤❤❤❤❤

I’m so glad you decided to share this story with everyone. I’m so glad you got the piccolo of your dreams. Choosing an instrument is so personal, it’s like choosing a car. Not everyone is going to like a certain brand. Some people drive Chevys but maybe I prefer Lincoln, just like how some people play on a Haynes but I play on a Powell. It all comes down to personal preference and I know this video will reach the right audience and help someone trying to pick an instrument.
So much love!!!❤️❤️ Stay safe, keep healthy, and always be the boss that you are!

The piccolo aside, I'm glad you shared your story, and it would have been okay if you'd decided to continue to hold it in confidence. I'm glad you were able to reframe your relationship with your piccolo. It's important, and after making many such choices in my life, looking back, I realize I feel clearer and am not holding what that would have meant if I hadn't done that. Consider it a gift to yourself and your future. Even tho having a video memory of it would be nice and meaningful, you may find that it is okay years down the line, and that how this happened was just as it was meant to be. Congratulations on doing that! And congratulations on this level of self-care. It won't just be for yourself. It will extend to all those in your life because of it as well. ❤

I can never thank you enough for your kind understanding ♥ As stupid as this whole situation sometimes feels to me, I feel like I can finally move on and truly enjoy what my piccolo has to offer. I'm actually excited to give it a proper review!! I think that's a big step in the right direction 😊

    • @ruth3753
      @ruth3753 11 місяців тому

Yes, it's a HUGE step in the right direction! And one day, you'll find you won't need to judge yourself for it. It's not stupid at all. Why wouldn't we be affected by what other people say? It's only natural, and we are all affected even as we're growing through it. And I was thinking it was important maybe that you didn't film it, so that you could truly honor it as your own experience unaffected by any outside factors that could take away from it. Doing a video much later, when you could have the conditions you're ready for is such a good way to do it. And that is now a memory that includes important life meaning as well. Much love ♥!!! @@JustAnotherFlutist

Thank you so much for your honesty, sometimes getting an instrument out of a brand that is not "a la mode" or heavily featured can be overwhelming because no matter how good the instrument is that self doubt never really fades away; btw, I absolutely LOVE the nagahara mini, I like doing pvc fifes because I love how warm and rich the low notes are compared to a standard piccolo, they speak fine but lack body, I'd love a review of the nagahara mini exploring all the quirckiness of a cylindrical body, how low notes resonates, maybe high notes are easier and it feels like a mini flute, I would like to know EVERYTHING LOL

I totally understand where you’re coming from; How one instrument sounds on one person sounds totally different on someone else. I too am on a journey to upgrade my piccolo; My dream piccolo is the Burkhart Elite Piccolo with a Mancke Mopane Wood Medium Wave Headjoint. I tried three different versions of the Nagahara Mini at the NFA Convention two years ago and it didn’t sound good on me.

Thank you for being so open about everything. You do you. Also you always told us the instrument (flute) chooses the player, just like the wand chooses the wizard. So if you choose something that really fits you, you should make that choice.

I would love for flute makers to start making baroque piccolo. Or if Aulos would make one in resin that would be the best.

I was flat broke when my piccolo suffered a fatal crack. I also live in the absolute middle of nowhere, so I wasn't going to be able to repeat the process that landed me with my beloved Altus. When I showed up at rehearsal with a cheap Chinese composite picc (that was the only one available in my town since driving 160mi one-way to the nearest music store wasn't feasible) I never heard the end of it. Was it pro-level? Absolutely not. However, it was leaps and bounds better than any of the Gemeinhardts I'd dealt with in high school. It was intended to be a holdover instrument and it's honestly a pretty good little picc.
My uncanny ability to accrew massive medical bills has kept me from replacing this $110 el cheapo. I love the Pearl that everyone was gushing over. Unless I win the lottery, the Pearl is never going to happen. El Cheapo is holding up for now and sounds perfectly acceptable for symphonic band. I just wish my sectionmates could get it through their skulls that I can't afford to take out a loan bigger than my car note for a piccolo. And in any case, they're all trying to push Yamaha on me even though I sound like mush on Yamaha flutes/piccolos. It's their brand of choice and their way of saying they'd not be caught dead with El Cheapo.

Japanese flutes way cheaper across the pond, FYI. I have a Miyazawa PCM, I heard you say you think you may want one of those for the copper content. Can confirm they're as good as you'd expect and they weigh nothing.
