The knock you are hearing in your steering is possibly covered by Technical Service Bulletin 04-17-17R (Rattling Sound from EPS Gear Box, 2015-2019 Legacy and Outback). Had it completed on my 2018 3.6R Outback. Nice and quiet now.
We actually just got a 17 Legacy 3.6R in on trade at work, and I must say, after driving it for the first time, I was genuinely impressed! I think these cars are seriously underrated! I kept trying to find excuses to drive it, haha.
I have same exact car 2016 and already gone through two steering rack repairs; and it's not cheap $2-3k each time. First repair was at ~60k miles, second time was at ~73k miles.

I think I prefer the 2017 Legacy over the new 2020 Legacy.
The 2018-2019 still has the compartment
