  • Subaru takes it's largest sedan and gives it more of a mainstream appeal with this all-new 2015 Legacy. More space, efficiency, and technology should do well with midsize buyers but has it lost the typical Subaru quirkiness in the process?

    I have one of these and this thing is a TANK in the winter when it snows.. I have to drive up a steep hill to get to work in the morning and I've driven around cars that cant make it up the hill when the light turns green every storm.. The AWD is reason enough to choose this car over a Honda Accord or anything else in its class and price range.. Oh and i have seen a 2015 Accord stuck on that hill and couldn't help but laugh lol

      +John t You're telling me. We have an old 99 and it was in the back of the drive way, we had just got ~8 inches of snow plus what the plows put at the road and the thing went through it like a hot knife through butter. I just ordered my 2016 model which I'll be getting sometime next month. But I had a little 98 corolla and when I went back to the 99 legacy. It felt just like you said. A tank.

    Glad to hear to most people the only negatives this car has is the no manual and no turbo. Personally I don't need either. I just want something dependable to get me from point a to point b that's alright on gas and can handle snow like a boss. I wanted to order the limited model but I just went with the premium. The only thing I liked that was different that the limited had was the more stylish rims and leather but I couldn't constitute paying 5 grand more just for that. I could honestly care less about the eye sight thing. I don't need assistance while driving. If I couldn't drive and I need shit like that, I shouldn't be on the road to begin with. I'm not lazy enough to need something to automatically accelerate and brake the car. As for size if anyone is wondering about that I'm about 6'1" and 320 pounds and I had plenty of room to move around. I sat in the AWD optional cars Ford had, Fusion felt ok above the waist, but with leg room it felt like I was in one of those long skinny drag cars, I had no leg room and my left foot was constantly bumping into my right foot when I would use the brake. The Taurus had the leg room, but the center console was so wide that it felt like I was near enough sitting on it. That was only really in the area just above my knee which was really uncomfortable. I checked a few other dealerships out most didn't have any with standard AWD (which I wanted) without paying extra for it. And also all the other cars in this class had worse gas mileage and the others didn't have the touch nav. Not really sure if that would have been an option or not but what ever.

    Just bought one. Love it. One thing does bother me is that while driving the car under 20kph, there's a weird noise which sounds like wind blowing through a narrow gap. The mechanic told me it was just the induction noise...You can actually hear it in this video too, at 20:15, when the car is slowing down...kind of annoying.

  •  9 років тому +3

    Intelligent review. I purchased a 2015 3.6R (6 cylinder) with Eyesight and all the other goodies on the last day of December. It does not compare to my 2004 Honda Accord V6 Coupe in terms of handling and off-the-line grunt. But it does everything else so well. Quieter interior, good ride, very comfortable cabin, great infotainment center, and Eyesight makes my long work-related drives much less fatigueing. It gives me the two things I needed/wanted for my driving through heavy city traffic and high elevations. AWD and adaptive cruise control for a very reasonable price. I can drive through Portland OR rush hour stop and go without ever touching the brakes or throttle. And out on the open road, it really helps with frustration of having to diddle with the cruise control constantly to acommadate changing traffic flow. I average about a thousand miles a week year-round in Idaho and Utah and in the Cascades of Washington and Oregon. Haven't really needed the AWD drive yet, but when it snows next winter on one of my long service trips, I will be glad to have it.

    Was in the market for a midsized sedan. Narrowed my search to the 2016 Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Mazda 6 and the Subaru Legacy. I test drove them all, and each of them were nice. Due to personal preference (and the fact that I wanted a very rare white exterior with black interior) I just purchased a white 2.5i Limited with the eyesight, navigation, and push button start. Having driven the car for about 500 miles I have to say I have zero (and I mean zero) buyers remorse. I love the car so far! Practical is the best way to describe the vehicle. Every feature in the car is just practical. The eyesight system actually works (and carries a discount with my full coverage insurance at american family), the trunk is huge, drives like a dream, the sound system makes my drive to work fun, and the looks that people give this car is awesome. (brownie points for buying a car that not everyone has...ehm accord and camry) Obviously since I purchased a 4 cylinder vehicle I do not care much for crazy speed but I will say that the car does have some pep.

    • @melead1010
      @melead1010 8 років тому +1

      +Daniel Marrett of course! So my legacy is currently sitting at 8,300 miles and I can easily say this car has been an absolute dream to own. I bought the car with every single option (for 2.5L engine) at 30k. So yes it was a bit pricey for the demographic that it's advertised to but I promise that it's worth every penny. Living in Wisconsin, I needed a car that would be able to go through snow, rain, or shine (all in the same week btw) and this car handles it all with confidence. The eye sight system works amazing, and will let you know if weather conditions are hindering the cameras. I can't tell you how many times people have complemented my car. Easily fits 5 full size adults with plenty of leg room in the front and the back (I'm a bigger guy and that's important to me).
      The touchscreen system is almost great, could be a tad more responsive but it's not annoyingly slow., and the navigation system is just as good as my phone. The amazing Blind spot detector and awesome resolution of the rear back up camera are making me a really lazy driver...
      Could be improved : cabin noise can be just a bit too loud, maybe some stock rear passenger window tints, gas mileage is 25.3 mpg since I bought the vehicle and that's about 70/30 city to highway miles. But that's really about it...

    • @danielmarrett5240
      @danielmarrett5240 8 років тому

      +Adrian Melendez Adrian, great update and thank you. I'm pretty settled on a Legacy but Subaru has got to bring Apple Car Play and Android Auto for that price before I will pull the trigger. I read way to many bad reviews of Starlink by owners. 4WD isn't as critical for me as you so it has got to match features with the Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata. My wife uses iPhone and she is isn't techie so she won't deal with Bluetooth audio pairing and the like. So Apple Car Play is a must if we are going to upgrade a vehicle. Heck, the new Accord even has a web browser built in. The midsize sedan segment is brutally competitive. Subaru has to bring it or remain an also ran. I hope Subaru gets it done soon so I can be driving one by summer.

    • @melead1010
      @melead1010 8 років тому

      +Daniel Marrett while I agree an update to starlink could be beneficial, I'm still not convinced om mirroring my device to the touchscreen. The bluetooth connectivity is perfect for my music, contacts, phonecalls and even reading incoming text messages. Navigation would be cool I guess but I honestly really like the subaru navigation. So I'm not sure what else android auto would do for me besides provide more of a distraction on the road.

    • @danielmarrett5240
      @danielmarrett5240 8 років тому

      +Adrian Melendez do you have a working "Mirror Link"? The review I saw said Subaru had not enabled it for the US market and the app shows but is not active. What can you do with Android Auto, actually reply by voice to text messages, do Google search by voice, access your custom play lists etc. I do agree the factory navigation looks very good, and too much connectivity could be distracting. But no car maker is going to integrate a smartphone to a car better than Apple or Google can themselves and automakers shouldn't try but just let them take over the vehicle head unit with their already advanced UI's. I am glad you are very satisfied with your Legacy and yours sounds really nice!

Secondly the review of the interior, he said that Subaru haven't been known for very good interiors..i own a 2007 Liberty (legacy) 3.0 R Spec.B and compared to many common vehicles of that era the interior is much much nicer...sometimes some car reviewers just talk crap to hear their own voice and fill time in videos.

      I think the reason they have a hard time in some places is because of the fuel efficiency. I live in Canada where the AWD is definitely a huge selling point..but if you were somewhere warm like Florida, or Arizona than the AWD (and the fuel consumption associated with it) is not worth it.

  • @Xmvw2X
    @Xmvw2X 7 років тому +1

    The H6 is a nicer engine than the 2.0L turbo. There's something nice about having instant torque and solid low end shove. This is something you just don't get in a turbo. This isn't to say that turbos can feel really good. For example, Mazda's 2.5L in the new CX9 is a very torquey motor with great shove. When you're on the throttle, it feels like a big engine. It also falls flat on the top end, as do all small turbo setups (the vast majority of oem designs). The H6 is just a smoother delivery, a more linear delivery. You'll never match the punch of a turbo, especially when we deviate from stock into aftermarket tuned setups running a lot more boost pressure. Engine choice is a matter of feel. Turbos can be very fun when set up correctly. However bigger displacement engines have a unique feel and a real sense of power. I say this as a guy with a heavily modified turbo setup and a guy who's driven Mustangs and a Viper. The choice in engine is a question of how do you want the experience to feel? Turbo engines are peaky things. In oem spec they may be pretty linear but relatively weak versus their actual capability. Tuned, they're very peaky systems. Naturally aspirated engines are more linear, but they rely completely on displacement for power output. A bigger engine just pushes you up to speed, albeit with less fanfare and showmanship unless we're talking really big engines,
    Personally I don't buy into the mpg hype of turbo engines much. There can be some gain simply because forced induction does allow a smaller, lighter package. That can allow for good overall efficiency. However, turbo setups can actually be very thirsty, especially when driven hard because they require moderately rich fuel mixtures to operate safely. That little 2.0L turbo might be getting 8mpg when you're romping on it, and when it' small you're romping on it more of the time. Plus you are forced to run lower compression in the engine to even allow boost, so when you're driving around lightly, there's less torque and less efficiency in fuel usage than a higher compression naturally aspirated version of the same engine. You're getting worse mileage than you would on a naturally aspirated version. Car weight is important, and smaller engines are a part of the drive to reduce weight. So are new generations of engines built lighter with better materials and design. Right now there's just a lot of development getting placed on the small engine realm and on turbo setups because they can be small and light. This doesn't mean that you can't make a big V8 efficient. Muscle cars like the Corvette can get 30mpg, and it's not because it's running a tiny engine. It's because that big engine is being used efficiently with things like cylinder deactivation which is a very smart way in handling fuel usage.

    Music blasting in everyone’s videos is insane. Cars, automobiles, sheesh, can’t watch a video & learn without cheesy attempts at entertaining. Image trying to be incognito then, Dance dance revolution kicks off at commercial volumes. Hilarious.

    It seems like there is a lot of engine noise -especially on acceleration. I have heard that the 3.6 actually produces less noise.

    Great review as always! Question on the key fob. Are you able to get that key fob with the 2017 Outback Limited? I see on Subarus website it's an option for Remote start with an entirely separate fob?

    • @mdubiansky603
      @mdubiansky603 7 років тому

      That fob doesn't offer remote start- you still need the stand alone remote for that. This is just the prox key/pushbutton ignition system.

    I live in Florida, there's no snow here but it does rain a lot. In your opinion would I see a benefit to an AWD Subaru or would I be better off buying a nicer front wheel drive car?

    • @theredline
      @theredline  9 років тому +5

      The Legacy's AWD system also features torque vectoring. That will assist in making the vehicle feel more agile in the corners and contribute to the nimble feel. You don't need to have snow to enjoy the benefits of AWD, although it will give you an added feeling of security in bad weather. Test drive one and see if you like how it feels, the Legacy can now be considered for other strengths besides just the availability of AWD.

      @neorick27 9 років тому

      Well getting something nicer is easy, I don't know about cheaper though. All these cars are about the same, though if I won't get much out of AWD then there are much better cars out there.

    I used to love Subaru' s but I can't find new one that looks good to me I'm able to deal with the exterior design, but the inside just reminds me of the 90's or early 2000 and the subpar audio systems aren't helping, I like the STI though.

    Go spend $15K on 2008 Passat / CC 3.6 VR6 with 4-Motion and 60K miles. Feels like a $40L car, because it was a $40K car new.....unlike this budget special from Fuji. Too many compromises in build quality with these Subarus. They feel budget grade when actually driving them. Too bad.

      Somehow that 152hp feels like a lot more, thanks to it being a True Sport Model this year. The bigger brakes/wheels, active torque vectoring, and sport suspension are all worth having.

    this guy never drove a Subaru before. He is thinking of Mitsubishi and Mazda with their shitty cars and is comparing old Subarus with those junk cars. I just tested a 2015 and it drives the same as my 1998. There is hardly any noticeable structural betterment, suspension or anything. Super smooth, like they have always been. They have always been Cadillac type of ride when cruising at 80mph on the highway and BMW in the corners. It's like a camry more so than accord, but with 4cyl and awd.

    Personally at the top level taking away the GT turbo charged legacy and having only the 3.6r is a bit disappointing.From watching reviews having the 3.6r lacks the raw aggression of the turbo charged GT 2.5 liter.The sporty aggression is what gives Subaru it's uniqueness sadly the 3.6r doesn't quiet have that aggression. and that's sad.

    • @theredline

      We heard slight wind noise but it was coming from the base of the windshield. We realize that older Legacy had that issue from the pillar-less windows but it's been fixed with this new one, interior is still not class leading in terms of noise level but it's on par with others.

    • @AnhYeuEmMaiMai69

      the wind noise was NEVER due to the frame less design, it was the rubber piece that was part of the mirror gusset
