When attempting to split the extruded body with the surface mesh, you need not create a surface, the split can be done with just sketches as the split tool
In order to flatten this part, you might have to built it in a different way. You can´t flatten this one. At least I ´m not aware of any tool to do that.

I don't know if you still reply to comments on this, but I was wondering if you could help. once you have made the bulge in the back of the chair and you need to combine it with the rest of the seat, mine just has an error saying "failed to boolean bodies together"

Maybe you bodies don´t touch/intersect, so it won´t be possible to unite/join them.
