Great video, I've totally been sleeping on using the equal constraint for holes. I usually use patterns or mirrors, but I usually end up with downstream issues when I want to tweak something.
As far as other sketch tricks, one technique I use a lot for roughing out a sketch is to purposely overshoot my lines so I don't have any constraints getting in the way while tweaking the placements and angles.
Once I have the rough sketch worked out I'll use the trim command (shortcut T) and cut off the overshot portions and apply constraints.

      Here's a few:
      - Projected line segments underneath actual lines (all collinear). How can you select a line segment that is on the same path as another line? It always picks the one you don't want.
      - How can your force your sketch to stay in the same plane as you started drawing on? Sometimes lines go off in 3D space at a weird angle instead of staying on the sketch plane.
      - Another is finding the centers of circles or objects as you begin to try to work on imported meshes that have lots of rounded and non-uniform surfaces everywhere.

I was trying to use a pattern to replicate a hole with an extruded rim/border today and could not get it to work. Whan I usd the pattern I could only get the holes but not the border. I ended up sketching the circle for the hole and the offset border, using rectangular pattern to create all the hole circles and then separately selecting all the hole circles and cutting them out and then selecting all the borders and extruding them. Grumbling that this can't be right the whole time. What is required in order to select and replicate both the hole and the border?

I don't know if it's a miss, or it's just me not understanding (as per usual 😁):
I have one question as a beginner tho, @5:28 you say that things are good below the line I see blue circles - doesn't that mean that something is missing? Is it that they are black when you hover over the area? If so you just missed hovering at @5:40 where the circles below the line still are blue. But then again, the circles are still not fully defined at @5:54 as I understand it. Very nitpicky, I know, but being new to Fusion 360 I want to get all details right😁
Good video, I subbed to get more tips 👍

I have one thing that consistently WRECKS my models!!! Forgetting to make components active before making edits so I get edits associate with the top of the model hierarchy or worse associated with incorrect components! There really needs to be a mechanism that warns when you are about to make edits while outside the component being edited!!!! I don't think I have completed a single model without wrecking the hierarchy in this way. Once you have made enough modifications outside the correct component there is no going back and the entire model is RUINED! This is the primary fault in top-down fusion modeling and why I prefer the other cad software model of creating each component independently and then adding them to the assembly.
You talk about wasting time. How much time does it waste to spend forty hours modeling something and find out 2 minutes before you are done you made 80% of the edits in the wrong components!!!!! That's a complete restart! How hard would it be for the program to toss a warning - you are about to make edits to component x while component y is active!

Thanks, you just answered why extrude/cut shows to be on the part I wanted to modify but "export" or "save copy as" don't have the edits/cuts.
Since I cut the assembly by planes off the fixture I couldn't have edited the part in its own design but had to modify it after inserting it into the fixture's design
Luckily I just need a Copy/Paste New for now for what I need as I just turn "stock" into the finished part.

Nice tutorial. I came to F360 from 3D Studio Max and figured it'd be a cakewalk to learn, but I find the UI and operations to be completely counterintuitive to the methodology of 3D Max. Even the simplest of models are littered with operations that I'm having to look up and try to remember for the next time and it can be quite discouraging. I'm convinced that it's just a matter of using it enough to finally have a Eureka moment where I realize that there's actually a simple system in place and I just failed to look outside of the box. Only time will tell.

I've noticed several people when they're building several components on their example video they start off far from the origin. So.... BOOM when I try that on my stuff. I've had components disappear completely.
I appreciate you showing how to make the relationship to the origin but maybe just starting with using it avoids problems down the road.
PROBLEM I have, is that the origin planes are not visible inside my components so I'm always chasing around. THIS is my biggest problem. Today.

Re: constraints, referred to as 'capturing the Design Intent' - capturing the fundamental characteristics/relations personality if you like, of the model. Although dimns are generally considered a constraint as well it's worth mentioning parameters at this point because they can be used as constraints - length x is always twice length y, spacing holes relative to the overall length etc. - and they can be 'constraints' across multiple sketches.

Sometimes I just cannot fully define a complex sketch. I miss the Solidworks fully define command. I had the student version of Solidworks for a year and although the fully define command did not always do what I wanted it to do, I got some pointers on what constraints were missing. I also miss the remove all constraints. It can be nice to start adding constraints from scratch. I still have a problem finding and removing constraints in Fusion 360.

disapearing sketchs in the tree, doing sketch 1, sketch 2, sketch 3, going back to sketch 1 for editing a dimension related to the newly added objects in sketch 3 and it disapears. But thats just how fusion works.

I hate auto references. You can turn those off. I always explicitly lay down my references, usually as a begin a sketch.
I just discovered a related setting that might help people be more productive: auto project geometry on active sketch plane. I'm going to give that a try.
Seems strange to me that you would accidentally start another sketch when your intention is to re-open an existing sketch. I never use the sketch command to re-open a sketch. I always use double click either on the time line or browser.

    • @3dbatman126

I think I might just found a way around it, not sure if that's the most practical way. If I first project the previously defined arcs to the plane I will be drawing the new arc, it works.

have you ever heard of Creo parametric. I've been using in for about a month now and it is really good. I have access to various features and I only found my self stuck once because of the programs limitations(the inability to produce sketches on a curved surface). I know that Creo is targeted for business use but they have tutorials on every feature. As of now I am currently learning surfacing with datum points and references. however, cero's starting price is 2000$ which is probably why is so unpopular.

PLEASE HELP! Total newbie transitioning from Rhino 3D.
Thanks for this great video, but I am running into two super basic things that are driving me bonkers -- hopefully when finished laughing at my beginners frustration/ignorance, you can help with these probably simple problems. I find no references that solve these in the forums or on YT.
    1.
I've begun a sketch in 2d and ALL of the points are showing as big black dots -- HOW do I hide all of these? The sketch palette (S key?) doesn't even mention point hiding.
    2.
The second issue is that all my previous work (again just in one plane 2D) has suddenly turned gray! I've read it is because I started a new component by accident (no clue how that happened), but HOW do I go back to showing my work in black like it was before it all turned gray? Really frustrating not to undo this gray appearance.
    Thank you for your help.

@@TylerBeckofTECHESPRESSO Thank you so very much.
I do believe I have it resolved now. My problem seems to arise from the differences between sketches, components, profiles, bodies, etc etc. I have not encountered these strict concepts in past programs (pretty much only layers, not any of the above). It seems everything existing grays out when you select "new component" and it appears there is no undo for that mistake.
