First Squad: How A Western Story Was Adapted Into A Japanese Anime And Manga | Comic-Con@Home 2020
History of anime referring to Russian/Soviet culture is surprisingly wide. From classic inclusion of russian cute girls (Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru) or soviet beauties (Lupin III) to anime diving unexpectedly deep in our everyday life like second season of Darker Than Black. And every story about space or literature must have at least some references, it's a default.
But "Первый Отряд" is forever doomed to be remembered as the time we actually tried, but never made anything out of such deal. It's strange to think how popular anime/Japanese culture in Russia, but how impactless our market is at the time. I'm sure there's going to be a greater anime-collab of countires than some wack occult action about WW2.
And if you interested in actual "First Soviet Anime" try Sekai Meisaku Douwa: Mori wa and Chiisana Penguin Lolo no Bouken. First one is perfect for upcoming holiday season and second one is wonderful wholesome story watched in childhood by many generations of Russians.
Thanks for the video!
damn it says it was made by toei animation was this toei making something for russia?
Mori Wa was made in collaboration of Toei and "Союзмультфильм" (main Soviet cartoon creating studio), it's an adaptation of famous Russian fairytale. Lolo is mostly listed as coproduct of Soviet and Japanese animators, but some resources mention both Toei and Союзмультфильм again.
That was a time of worldwide ambitions and collaborations. Soviet Union was working more with other countries in terms of art.
80's was more productive time than todays.. somehow
In my country during the 80's they aired alot of Russian cartoons that were dubbed to Arabic. Most if not all of them were fairy tales. It was weird but awesome nonetheless.
soviet era animation is really great usually
If you want, you could check some Soviet Era made animated movies, the ones I had seen had been actually quite a delight.
Aside from that, it sort of bothers me that she uses a katana. Russia has a long rich history of bladed weapons.
The 4 c studio anesthetics are strong in this one
I've never watched the show but I have always been fascinated by russian made "otaku culture" like everlasting summer and moe era. I like the idea of anime culture benefiting from the great russian literary culture in some way.
Interestingly enough, "Первый Отряд" isn't actually the only Russian anime which actually tries to be like "Japanese anime" and heavily borrows in style and presentation, there was another project which was directed by Russian director and promoted at about the same time as "Russian anime" at the time of wild 2000s, but wasn't as successful as "Первый Отряд" or had any impact, or well wasn't even about Russia as far anybody can tell. It was some kind of Ergo Proxy ripoff in style and presentation and unlike "Первый Отряд" I remember it more, because of how bizarre it was.
Edit: I look it up, turns out it was released after, but most luckily was promoted and discussed by a community at the same time frame as "Первый Отряд". But I'm not going to check on that, because there is a limit on how often I can revisit 2007s myself, give me a slack, lol.
And the name is?
@@masterxk oh god, you made me look it up, it's Exaella.
but as fair warning, I did mention it wasn't great even by standards of the time it was released.
It's not the first though and definitely not Soviet. There's an actual anime made in USSR in collaboration with Japanese animators, it's called The Adventures of Lolo the Penguin.
i like the concept and potential of it, more animation for new markets can help get more people in to animation
ive seen a lot of russian made movie trailers , they always look great but the movies them selves quite often do not live up to the expectations for me personally , im sure ill find one ill like eventually, lot of filsm i have yet to see
Ooooff, now that’s a blast from the past. I remember when it first came out, everyone and their grandma took a dump on it, since it really wasn’t that great.
its either first russian anime or the first anime about soviet's, not the first soviet anime
There is a version with live action, short bits of interviews of ww2 veterans just bulshitting us as the plot is teutonic ghosts and whatever stuff that didn't happen so people who were there to see what did happen don't help the story. But yeah if they did a realistic sort of story in the soviet ww2 setting it could have worked. Next to this Indiana Jones is a veritable documentary.
jesus
Honestly if they just remove the "mystical" stuff in the anime, it would be probably a great anime by itself.
A fellow Porter Robinson fan!
Ooo Porter Robinson
Another great video mate
The music at the beginning of the Russian music video is used in an animation classic.
Soviet era.
I can't remember if it's one with a hedgehog, or about soldiers returning home.
I glad I learned about this thing even if I probably won't end up watching it.
It seems like a spin off of Annie Lionheart in her very Young. Interesting.
I want to see this ANIME right now!
strangely enough, i remember this movie; there was a lot of hype surrounding it when it was still in development... but once it was complete (and turned out to be painfully mediocre at the very best), it all went away.
btw, there was a lot of soviet cartoons aimed at adults... only they were weird arthouse shorts, nothing like (mainstream) anime.
I don't car about story..... Russian anime girl you had me at showing the Russian anime girl !
That looks amazing
Oh my god I REMEMBER THIS!!! I REMEMBER EXACTLY WHERE I WAS WHEN I BOUGHT THIS! I was at a best buy with my best friend walking down the anime isle and this caught my eye. Hold fuck that's a flashback
What is the name of the movie at 2:46? It looks familiar but I cant remember the name
Omg, I love this movie
I wound up picking this up on Bluray at a resale shop for a reasonable price. I had zero clue what this show was about but I thought the cover looked interesting. I was quite disappointed once I watched it however. Not the best work of Studio 4°C
on this side of the decade its one of their weakest
I read volume 1 of the manga. I didn't like it much and now I know why. I wasn't the target audience.
I really wish they didn't put the mythical story element in it.
Hahaha, it's such a flat yet weird movie.
Do you think is it possible that inconsciously you overly critizy the movie becouse it is aimed to an ex-comunist country? Considering that all the shortcomings that you pointed out are shared by the vast majority of the recent animes of the last decade.
The ex stanlinist angle doesn't bother me, could have been made in Germany for all I care its still a dull watch

i bought this from the bargain bin, it was like 3.99, the shipping was more. 4C let me down in this one
If you watch First Squad music video you can come up with way better story than the full blown anime has.
Wait so what exactly failed here, the script is so bland and kind of random, forgettable even, but everything else is fine, it sounds good it looks good (well as good as it can look with generic blondes with katanas), but doesn't clicks good...
It's boring, for a 4c production i wouldn't say it looks good it's pretty middle of the road
Dafuq?
Ah. Shit.
I remember the hype for that one, of course, I didn't saw it, just look at those stiff animations and rough designs, even back then I said no to this, and it's Russian made movie, so the plot is typically and normally going to suck by default, as every movie that comes out from Russia.
I hated to be right when the reviews came out.
This whole video is going as fast as 500km/hr, it makes it very hard to listen what you're saying and your pronunciation/enunciation is weird, it becomes very unaccessible towards people with ESL
If you click the settings icon and then click playback speed, you can set a custom playback speed by integers of .05, between .05x to 2.00x. I myself have the opposite problem where I can't concentrate on what's being said if its too slow, so I usually end up needing to turn it up to 1.1x or 1.15x. Try setting it to 0.9x, then tweak it by .05 as you need.
@@lexecomplexe4083 Thanks I tried that, now it's very funny as it sounds like someone's drunk but the accent and improvised speech makes it still hard to understand
It's the whole diction and mouth movements seem like it's all being muttered throughout (which it is).
@@JTR_3 I think that's just down to Stevem's preferred narration voice
@@lexecomplexe4083 yeah welp, I don't think it works that good for an international audience then
Why people treat communist propaganda aesthetics like something acceptable? That's fucked up m8
yea thats what i thought
its even more ironic now, 3 months later
Comminist propaganda
Style can be very anime feeling. Depends at always, but you are wrong that it cant make a good anime style. It can.
Just dont make it propagande but over the top stialized " can" make a good style.
The problem of propaganda us more the maziness often and messaging. Not the style per se.
