- *Torque Specs below* EVERY STEP NEEDED is in this video!!!
Watch the whole video so that you don't miss out on any of the TIPS and TRICKS we use to get this job done the correct way!!! This is the most in-depth video on this project on UA-cam. All inclusive video with torque specs.
Replacing the valve cover gaskets on the VQ35DE the CORRECT way. I cover pretty much everything you need to know to replace your leaking valve cover gaskets. If I forgot any information I will add it below in the description as I remember it.
--------------------------
Total time: 8 hours with lunch break and 2 hr RTV dry time
REMEMBER: When loosening bolts, go in reverse order of the diagrams. When tightening bolts, go in order from 1 up on the diagrams.
Valve Cover Torque Specs: 9-26 in lbs first pass - 60-83 in lbs second pass
Lower plenum torque specs: Pass #1 40in lbs - Pass #2 80 in lbs - Pass #3 110-120 in lbs
Upper Manifold torque specs: Same as lower plenum
Man I wish I had friends like this... they always come asking me for help but when I need help on my car they're nowhere to be seen
Seriously!!!
Ain't that the truth
Facts
Facts lmao
Because you doing wrong.. if you need help just tell them .. hey guy's a have a 36 package of beers from Costco.. and will see a many assholes show up
Everytime I work on my 350z I wish I could just rip the wiring harness out and throw it in the trash cuz it's always in the way😂 Thx u guys 4 making these videos! It really helps guys like me out👍👏
This comment got me deadddd i got 04 g35 Lmao. I feel you just had to do sparkplugs i was talking shit to that harness lol
start the car at the end of the video, brings your viewer satisfaction
Yeah, the car can be started right after repairs, it shouldn't affect anything.
He used high temp gasket maker lol had to sit for 24 hours
@@dehd1457 true
I agree! That would have been good to incorporate. Thanks for the suggestion.
Anyone notice how undercooked that pizza was on the bottom lol
Yea lmao
St. Miina who cares his hands were dirty ass fuck touching it !!!!
“What you do is grab a beer then man up and get that shhhh done “😂😂😂
How has this held up? Is it leaking anywhere? Just wondering if there was anything in hindsight that yo would have done differently because I'm about to attempt this myself on my '05 G35. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Great job on the vid.
Thanks for this video man! Nicely done. Where did you get the gaskets ?
To save time on organizing your bolts, just get a box with a lid and poke holes in the lid, and label them 1-18 and stick the corresponding bolt in the hole to hold them til you reassemble. Just saves time taping, searching for and untaping each one. Plus you don’t waste blue tape which isn’t cheap.
was gonna say, that tape method looks super slow lol. I just poke holes in a piece of cardboard and write labels directly on the cardboard. Shoebox would work well.
UghDroppingLoads that is a great idea, I always just put them nearby where I took them out and crossed my fingers I remember the correct arrangement
UghDroppingLoads what I did on my upper oil pan on my 350z was print out a diagram from the FSM, tape it to a pizza box, and then poke them through the diagram where it went and it just stuck in the pizza box.
Thank you guys. I was able to follow your directions to replace the valve cover amd gasket. I also changed a couple coils and all spark plugs while i was at it.
It took me about 10 hours going very slowly and carefully.
Expect to buy replacement generic hoses. Mine were extra toasty.
Awesome to hear. Glad we could help!
Old school tuners trick :- use aviation gasket cement instead of rtv. That will hold your gasket instantly and give you a better seal
Wanted to say thank you for this video. I just completed the job today on our 2003 G35 Sedan and this really helped. Knowing what to expect before you start is invaluable - thank you. Only 1 bolt needed a wobbly - passenger side left corner. I used snack ziplock baggies to organize my bolts as I took them off. The entire job was 10mm only. (8mm for clamps or use a flat screw driver.) I did not have to clamp the throttle body hoses when I removed them (as someone asked below) - you lose about 2 oz's of coolant - no big deal. I did not use the blue tape trick for the valve cover gaskets. I siliconed them in place the night before. I did have a very small leak at the variable valve solenoid on the passenger side when it was all said and done. A trip to Infinity for a new gasket (5.00) fixed that problem. All is well - looking clean. Thanks again! If anyone else is doing this - I recommend replacing the cam position sensor on the drivers side if you have more than 150K miles on the original. We have 223K miles and have already replaced the passenger side. Since it was so exposed and easy to get to, I replaced the drivers side as well (65.00). (New set of plugs of course! NGK Iridium's.) New PCV valve.
Forgot to mention - I bought a 20.00 torque wrench from Harbor Freight - it worked great for this job.
Parts: Valve Cover Gaskets, Intake manifold gasket set, 6 plugs, PCV valve, Throttle Body cleaner, Grey RTV - 110.00 Purchased most through RockAuto.com (Felpro)
Extra part - Cam Position Sensor - Drivers side 65.00 local - About 35.00 at rockauto.com)
Not an expensive job - just a bit time consuming.
Glad it could help you out man!
Thank you as well for the great details.
thank you for this info im about to cry because i just brought a 06 g35 awd and my husband just informed me that the head gasket needs changing he has mechanic friends but they dont like to do the work so now i have to either sell mines and cry or man up and do it myself
I have an 03 g35 w 119k original thanks for this comment lol
How much you charge me to fix mine
Man this video saved me so much time and money!! Thank you guys! Great work!
Just wanted to pop in and say thanks for this video. My 04 g35 had 4 plugs covered in oil and misfires, so went ahead and swapped both covers. This helped a bunch. That passenger side cover was no joke heh. Turns out 2 coils were also bad, swapped those out and now she's back to her old self. Took about 6 hours including dry time, lunch and a 30min power nap lol. Was quoted $1700 to fix. Thanks again!
Dude that's awesome!!! Good job. Glad she's running well now
How do you tell of a coil is bad
David DeLaTorre did u just replace the gasket or the whole cover ?
that was good, you need to invest a day or two if doing it alone.
You guys are cool. How Nice to have a brother, especialy when he knows mechanic 👍
Watching the video i think "oh look, this looks like the mid west". Hearing the sirens at @12:36 "nope, its silent hill"
How did everything hold up and do since the 3 years you put this on? Im changing my valve cover gasket within the next week since its blowing air and oil out from the seal. Need to order parts now before finding out im missing something i should have ordered before hand. Any issue with the fle-pro gasket? What other seals or things would you cleaned out and change while you have the covers off? Ive also heard about needing bolt grommets and replacing the spark plug seals should be done. Ive checked the spark plugs and coil packs 3 month/ 3k miles ago and looked good. I have an 06 m35 with 27k miles on it. Just kinda has been sitting before i bought it. Minor annoyances cstching up with basic maintenence from things aging.
I'm currently doing this valve cover swap and for anyone who is planning to do this YOU MUST REPLACE THE WHOLE VALVE COVER. The plug seals ARE NOT serviceable. If you don't replace them the plug seals will eventually crack just like the valve cover seal and will cause oil to leak into the plug wells and foul your plugs. Also a lot of the things they disconnected in the video are not really necessary. Just use zip ties to pull back all the wires and hoses so that you don't have to fight them when trying to slide in the valve covers.
For anyone else doing this here is a link to the Factory Service Manual with all the factory torque specs to do this job. This manual covers just about everything on the car you might want to do so its digital gold. I have no affiliation with the website in the link I just stumbled across this while searching for the torque specs.
www.nicoclub.com/FSM/350Z/
Marshall thanks for the warning. Today I just swapped some plugs and coils after an absolute piss-fest of oil on the passenger side bank. Now I know what I’m going to need to do starting tomorrow.
My thought exactly! The sirens started to stress me out when you were removing the valve cover HAHA
thanks guys, my question is what kind of cleaner where using to clean the head or can I use any kind of cleaner?thaks
I change my valve cover gasket, and still leaking i don't know what i did wrong, by the way do you know the torque for all the upper and the inside screws??
I see you've got a plenum spacer.are they worth it? Any thoughts about throttlebody spacers? Im in the process or replacing my valve covers and think i will add silicone to the spark plug boot seals as well. Might get those spacers in while i have engine taken apart.
Wish I knew Infiniti spark plug gasket rings weren’t removable accidently broke mine🤦♂️
Wait, they arent? Did you have to buy new covers? Any other issues or areas of concern when replacing the valve cover seals? I have an m35 as well with 27k miles but its aged and itll be the first time the valve covers have been off. Much appreciated
Don't underestimate the need for a quality low torque range torque wrench here. I tried to do it with my big torque wrench and snapped a bold off. Took me 2 hours to get it out... Great video guys!
I did the same trick with the valve cover except instead of tape, I used zip ties and it was perfect. Same problem, gasket kept falling out and I was like ok, u wanna play, let's play 🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
What's wrong with the engine is it's a Nissnault VQ
All seriousness tho, when you disassemble, you follow the same bolt sequence as during assembly. So bolt #1 will always be #1, 2, will be 2, and so on and so forth.
I replaced my spark plugs for the second time now 60k+60+=120k miles, and noticed spark plugs #1 and #6 in the firing order have oil on the spark plugs. In my search for remedies, it seems many people encounter #6 being bad. Anyways, I ordered replacement coil packs to see if that fixes the problem but I thought about it and while that may help, I don't think that's going to fix my problem because the spark plug socket also came out with oil all over it telling me, theres a problem on the top half (passed the threads of the spark plug). Seems I'll be following your video in the near future. Any idea of what else I should replace since I'm going to have to open her up?
If there is oil on the spark plugs your valve cover gasket is leaking at the spark plug gasket. Advise replacing both since your already taking the engine apart that far. Buy new valve cover gaskets and follow the steps on this video to replace both. Simple job just time consuming.
@@EdibleGrandpa
Yep, I'll be ordering soon. Just replaced the coil packs yesterday and my car runs sooo much better now. I had no idea they were bad. I hope nothing serious happened to the engine. Now it runs smooth, it's quieter, even the RPM dropped a little at highway speeds, 6th gear. I'm going to fill up today, reset my odometer and see what kind of fuel consumption I'll have now.
If you are getting oil in your spark plug tubes then just replacing the cover gasket will not fix that problem.
that was super informative. Thanks for taking the time. and sharing great ideas.
When you put the gasket you need to add some silcome on the top corners to help the gasket sit and make a better seal
i've done mine without watching this video first. i sort of have a strong knowledge of what i was doing the entire time. What bothered me, was that Nissan made the Spark plug seals not serviceable, so if you're finding an oily spark plug in any of the cylinders, you have to replace the entire cover gasket. which i had to order and waited for. beside that i've also changed the upper intake gaskets because i refuse to have to open the top of that engine again. Everything is fine now, And Steven R Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Cheers Mate !!!
thank you that answered my recent question (: didnt know if the mechanic was trying to juice me
I hate that the spark plug seals aren't serviceable. Freakin' annoying considering that the valve covers Range from Unknown $400 Ebay one's and $1000+ OEM ones.
@@birpstudios6698 Yea, its some bullshit !
I'm spinning the lottery wheel with a pair of $100 valve covers because of the tube seals. Hope they work!
Jean Loizin I saw the same thing with my old Saturn. From what I recall, what a lot of people do on that is to cut or drill it out or something and then they can replace it.
Starting mines right now but on a 08 g35x. Hope it goes smooth
Could this be the reason why oil is dripping onto my headers and making a lot of smoke come from under my hood??
nothing better than that "dag gum" 16:48 RTV, Brake Kleen Pizza....recommended daily allowance of fluoride.
How long overall? 3-4 hours minus the lunch break? But definitely like your boy said...
"Whatchu do, is you drink a beer, and you man up and get that shit outta the way, and don't worry about it."
Thanks for the video knocked out my g35 today 💪🏾
When I took my bolts off I just threw it into a cardboard box and when I need to put it back I just guessed half of it
xToy_Soldier 808 A
That's stupid.
William Huff let guess your type of person to label everything
xToy_Soldier 808 Haha. Love it.
With a half ass decent memory it doesn't take a rocket scientist to put things back in right places without labeling everything.
I've already done my valve covers, intake gaskets and I went ahead and did a wire tuck too. No splicing or cutting needed, just de look and re loom behind intake and all wires hidden.
I'd be interested to find kut thd steps to de loom and re loom the wiring harness to move it out of the way!
Excellent write up! Did you use new gaskets for the upper and lower plunem? In addition to gaskets, did you use rtv on valve covers and plunums? You mentioned you can do this job without totally removing the plenum- is that true? Lastly, isn't there a coolant line that you need to drain or can you just clip that off? Thanks again and stay safe!!
Did any coolant lines need to be taken off? (watched but hard to tell)
10:20 before you start buying spark plugs, swap spark plugs from another cylinder with a known good one. See if problem persists, and if it does, do the same with the coil packs. My misfire was a coilpack
i like this, i have my vq25 and i suspect the valve seals are worn-out since some of the plugs are having some oil when i check them,,,,and this video does exactly what i need to do,,,good job guys
That would be your valve cover spark plug tube seals not your actual valve cover gasket. From experience they supposedly don’t make replacements that fit. That was a few years ago but now auto-zone supposedly makes them. I would just replace the whole valve covers to keep it minty replacing the seals independently is a real pain.
Can alex come help me with my g35 ?
sorry im new to this. Do you have to take out all 6 coil packs?
Dude that pizza break 😂 looked so good
You should just poke holes in some cardboard to hold and label your bolts. Also, you could label your hoses to make things a little easier when putting it back together. Just label with letters or numbers. A goes to A, B goes to B, etc.
Hey guys..im in the process to change my valve cover gasket..and my problem is that i cant seem to get the right passenger side in correctly. Onces its done and put together...start my car and its leaking oil...
Thank for the video it help a lot I show my support!!!
Got my first G a while now and imma attempt this to see how bad is the oil consumption rn and there is a leak in the upper plenum. Thank you for the video! Helped me find the right rtv!
your best video. but the hardest part is putting shit back together, I'd watch that completely.
revvolutions ... honestly, putting it back together was the easiest part!!! Taking wiring harness and bolts out were more stressful for sure
Steven Rickett good prep work makes it easy. props.
I like your video man thanks !!!!!
Steven , i'm a big fan of your videos especially because you have G35 infiniti coupe. i have a problem in my coil cover ( driver side), and i watched step by step how to reach there and put gasket, but i missed the last part where re-installation took place.I live in Dubai and weather is so hot in here, and i began to fix my car by my own since most of the garage here doesn't apply any of such way to fix like you do guys. So, May i kindly ask you to help? what about the reset of the ECU? Does it need the scanner?
Mazen Marakebgi ... look up g35 ECU reset on UA-cam. Tons of good videos on how to reset.
Great , Thank you Steven... looking forward to watch new things on g35.
Does anyone know if the gaskets for the spark plugs on the valve covers are replaceable? On my g I have a problem with them and I was told I have to get new Oem covers
That's correct. Thanks to Nissans brilliant engineering (heavy sarcasm here), those gaskets aren't replaceable and instead you have to buy a new valve cover.
Getting ready to tackle this on my fx35. I'll make sure to post a video.
How’d it go?
@@anthonypena986 it was ok. Valve cover didint work. A little different. But, changed plugs while I was in there. Runs great.
That catch can is putting in some work lol my plenum was brown with burnt oil
Great video guys, i got a 2006 350z and im getting ready to do the exact same thing, valve cover gaskets
excellent work
Wow, if I ever need to do this procedure , I think I'll just sell of the my 04 G35 😢
Guda Lawrence you’re one lazy owner then. Every VQ35 needs this done within about 100,000KM
@@roddydykes7053 na shame in admitting what I can't do than try to shiit I can't undo.
Doing today thanks for the video
I dig how they are jamming DGD in like every clip 🤣
Bit late to your video's, as we now have two Stageas with these engines.....but what would cause the oil to leak into cylinder 6 spark plug ?
I have the same issue on 4 and 5
Cheers
i did not know that they sell the gasket separately... thought you had to buy the whole cover with the gasket together.
Rex Erection - you can get both new valve covers plus all the gaskets on eBay right for about $70. Getting ready to do mine, I have a leak on the driver side coil pack gasket.
Its recommended for the people who have high mileage on the valve covers. I screwed up just buying the gaskets and then started the removal and the spark plug seals were cracked up and they are molded to the valve covers and are not replaceable on my covers. therefore i should have bought both valve covers. I had 147k+ on my OEM valve covers.
D'anjelo Frazier welcome to Nissan life. Complete shit buckets
$40 valve cover and gasket on Amazon
Lynx Star Automotive I’m coming from turboed Subaru so this is still an improvement in reliability nonetheless
What's that alarm going off when spraying brake cleaner?
Hey Steve, great work!! How many miles did your engine have when doing this job ?
Planning on doing this to my 370 pretty soon, great video and great tips. Now I have a better idea as to what I'm doing haha
Small world seeing you here mr upcoming 400 hp 370z
My Mechanic is telling me i need to replace the valve covers as well as the gasket ?? any opinions
More than likely, yes. I know it sucks but a lot of the time the gasket isn't enough. This is especially when you have oil in your spark plugs tubes.
Riley fuck. Mine was pissing oil into the passenger side spark plug holes, causing bad misfires. Glad I saw this comment cause now I have to anticipate buying more shit than just the new gaskets
cool video. I'd like to see your brothers 240sx, what year and model sr20det dies he Have?
Silviasean ... he actually sold it. He use to have it but traded for a 300 then sold for a BMW lol
How'd you get that crankcase breather hose off without breaking it?
Corps Corpse gonna have to get a new one from Nissan if you break it
After being under there for a good while of heat, the rubber breaks down and hardens it
I broke mine and had to go get it from Nissan lol
Part # is 11823-AL50A
How did you get the valve cover remove on the left side where the wire harness makes it difficult? Im having the same issue with taking off the valve cover
You guys are fucking awesome for this video... Sub and follwed u. Im doing my car next week
Both the wells in the back have oil leaking from the top of the well toward the bottom. You think it's just a simple gasket replacement that will fix it???
i think i have this engine in my 2003 QX4.....mechanic wants 800 for this job..... i mean would the identical pathfinder be so much?
why why whyyyy? why that crazy design? just bought an 03 g35 with 91k miles on the clock. this video makes me want to go back to my e46
Steven: Did you have to clamp the water or coolant hose when you disconnected these hoses? Did you have to reprogram the throttle body after you disconnected it from its sensor?
I just put a towel over the hoses and it was fine. Yes, reprogram the entire ECU, throttle body re-learn, the whole nine after this is done
ecu does it its self. by removing the battery cable the ecu is reset.
Next time just unhook the battery before working on it...
Do you guys recommend changing spark plugs while we ad it? 🤔 and would NRG platinum spark plugs bee cool
How many miles on this engine? It looks clean! I'm working on a 294k VQ original motor rev up. Has carbon build up like a mofo in the lower intake runners and plenum has never been cleaned brown inside🤦 the valve covers have leaked oil for so long that the entire underside in front of the catalytic converters is covered in oil. Original spark plugs, the gap is almost double what it should be 😑 It still ran and drove. Desperately needs some TLC. Cylinder 6 tube seal is leaking too.
Hi bro's. My g35 keep on overheating there isn't any visual leaks that's what im tripping on. Radiator is good no leaks thermostats i changed it new. It can't be my water pump because it doesn't overheat quickly. The needle just keeps going up then back to normal temperature. Fans turn on. I don't have air on the system. I need help bros.
..im looking at a 05 g35 with the vq35, the engine runs but its not 100% ,i feel the ecm is bad could be an easy fix or a total bust. After reasearch I've found the ecm to be cheap but also found that these engines consume a lot of oil, is the oil consumption that bad ? Any advice and help fixing the car would be gladly appreciated!
very helpful video, first time doing this all by myself, well i did get help by my worker cause it started to get super late and we ended up staying till 8 PM since its winter it got dark at 4 smh had to install everything back under a small flashlight, my passenger valve cover started leaking like a water faucet when i turned my car on, i did skip watching the rest of the video only cause the wifi was bad in my area, tomorrow i have to do this all over again, here i am at my house now being able to watch the full video, i will def be doing the gasket tape method and the hour wait for the rtv, had to leave my car at the shop, hopefully tomorrow goes well ahah.
I have oil in my spark plugs. Just got a G35 and noticed she’s running rough. I have one of those computer things for my car it it can back with multiple cylinder misfires. I recently got two used valves covers to replace the ones on my car. Is it bad for oil to be in my spark plugs?
thank you for taking the time to make and post the video
i replaced my valve cover and for some reason now its throwing a random misfire I have linked it to the number 4 cylinder if I unplug the coil pack it doesnt backfire otherwise it does. I need help guys I have replaced the coil and all the sparkplugs and wires now i.m at a loss.
When should you change the valve covers on the g35. I know that if you have oil in your spark plugs you need to change it. What if you don't have any leaks? What other symptoms suggest it can be the valve covers? Btw awesome video. Getting my own G35 soon and I'm glad that you have been posting a lot about the G.
toxicsniper213 ... FIRST: a leak at the spark plugs needs a new gasket on the inside of the valve cover, not an entire valve cover gasket. I did not have that leak so I reused my old valve cover. SECOND: you will know that it is time to change the valve cover when it starts to leak. It's that simple 👍🏽.
toxicsniper213 I just got my valve covers, valve cover gaskets, intake breather hose, and intake plenum gasket replaced.
My problem started when me and my dad decided to work on the G35 (coupe 6MT). We changed the oil no problem then we were changing the spark plugs... the middle spark plug on the passenger side had very little oil leakage but nothing severe. The spark plug that was the closest to the driver side was FUCKING SOAKED IN OIL!!! This is obviously a problem to be concerned with so just check your spark plugs make sure they are clean and not taking a bath in oil like mine were and you should be fine.
I had my mechanics replaced the valve covers and other miscellaneous things since I figured if my mechanics were gonna be in there it was for the best for them to take care of everything and do some good ol preventive maintenance!
do you have the part numbers for the 99 maxima seals? I have heard varying opinions on what does and doesnt work. There used to be a vendor on my350z selling seals and a tool to center the hole cutter on the valve cover to remove the old seals. I dont think he sells them anymore.
Mine started to leak today 😢
When it starts smelling like a Japanese candle burning under the hood..
Dance Gavin Dance in the background tho!😍😍
whats the spark plug tq specs?
Thanks very much…. Just finished this replacement exercise. While I had everything off, took off all the plenums down to the valve chambers. Replaced the knock sensor and the harness (wow!!! What a place to put it) since I was getting P0327. Never got P0328 but since I had every open..
This video was very helpful. I will add that using a flex socket for the left bank left corner by the firewall was REQUIRED.
Thanks again….
My g35 has recently started to release some light white smoke, at idle and a fair amount when accelerating, not over heating and no milky oil, could this be a failed head gasket ?????? Pleas help
I just replaced the valve covers on my g and its leaking again around the tube seals. Do you think I can add rtv inside the boarder of the tube seals while the cover is on?
The tightening order doesn't matter, it's just an intake manifold. It might matter if you're pushing 1000hp but not for this fyi
How did u get the back left passenger one by the harness out ?
I'm a little late here but thanks heaps for the video! was quite overwhelmed by the thought of doing my valve covers but thanks to this vid i got it done myself with ease!
Can someone help me about the code i got P0081 Infiniti G35. My car is not going as it should Going very slowly even i hit the gas 45-50. losing power .
anyone notice that the catch can is installed wrong? lol
whatd they do?
Lol I can hear the dance Gavin dance blasting in the background
Am bout to do one right now.not putting etc though.thanks guys
What’s happened if de person forgot removal that things used for Proteccion and closed everything and Starts the Engine. Plz.
You guys just saved yourself about $2,000 buck easy
Ron Smith yup. $100 for the whole project
more like 400$
How much should I charge to do this job for someone? Exact engine and vehicle, have done many times to many vehicles for my father. So never charged someone, would like some info, Keep in mind the dude is tryna save me from an actual mechanic shop.
Hey man, my car stall each time I put 1st...all gears (MT) from 2k rpm it drops to 0 and turn off. (2007 G35 coupe) it has been resting for a month when I was away. Do you know what could be the issue? I thought it could be the position cam sensor, but the car does start normally and stay idling no problem, but when I push the clutch and put 1st it just stall.
ersbit I would check cylinder #6 for oil on top of sprak plug. It’s pretty simple to check to verify. My wife drive this car never raced or stepped on it & it still needs to be replaced at 120k mark.
Jeff Johnson replaced the engine or you are talking about the spark plugs?
ersbit Yeah sorry I wasn’t more clear, spark plug 6. Oh no, whole engine replaced.. what was wrong?
Hey man when I cleaned my solenoids I was able to bolt both off but only was able to slide one of them out of the metal thing. Were your solenoids easy to slide out?
Great video! How do you detach wiring harness attachment from valve gasket (green, very back ) on driver side? I try pushing down and pulling but it doesn’t work. Thanks you!
