I like your build and the fact that you built it yourself is even better. I finished my '30 Model A coupe (50s hot rod) about a year ago after about 5 years on and off. Started it to have something to do in my free time. Finally got it on the road and couldn't get it to go 55mph without it shaking all over the place. Tried everything, balance, alignment, etc. No luck. Finally put the front wheels and tires off of my '32 on and lo and behold took it up to 70 with no shaking. Turns out it is my expensive American Classic white walls are out of round. Life is better when you drive a hot rod.
Just found your channel, and thoroughly enjoyed your walk-a-round. Your rod brings back memories from my hot rodding days in the 50’s-60’s. It’s great to see young guys still carrying on with hot rods like yours. Good job, my friend.
Great looking and running car! I love to see young people building these old cars. I'm 73 had a '30 tudor in my youth (15). Keep up the good work. Subscribed.
I'm watching this with my father who is cutting up the first car he has owned, a 31 Model A Ford Tudor, and we have been searching for Model A hotrod vids and yours has stood out the most for the home built one man operation. Great work! Will love to see how this goes!
Congratulations, I know its not 100% where you probably want to take it, but you have come such along way, hope you enjoyed the journey and any future journeys and projects.
She looks amazing! Just a couple of days ago I looked to see when was the last time you posted an update. So happy to see this, and that you didn't just give up like so many guys do! Congrats on the awesome job at the hot rod shop too!
Nice job Ben, not sure if you realized the magnitude of that project before you started, so happy for your accomplishment! You've acquired much knowledge and experience that will serve you well in the future, hard to put a price on that... Ben's Dad
Ben, absolutely fantastic achievement. Well done. As your father stated previously, lessons learnt will last a lifetime. Very impressive. Regards Ron (UK)
Great update Ben, I've followed the project from the beginning. What an accomplishment. The car came out great. You should be very proud of yourself for putting it all together, there was a lot of stuff to figure out, and you did it, learning as you went. TROG 2018!!!!
Ben, I have followed you off and on and its great you have it running. For a young man to do this project on a car port you should be very proud. Keep up the project, I hope to see more progress at a latter date. Guy Pearl
nice work on the coupe. Great stance I always like the stock ride height on the model a. I have a 28 model a traditional hot rod sedan. Now I have to get working on it to finish it. Keep up good work.
Real nice old style hot rod, good to see a young guy enthusiastic about an old car, best bit is NOT seeing Chev V8 in there! Good to see and hear the old flat head V8!!
Ben, just saw this. Wow, car looks GREAT! Really has a great look, you nailed it for sure! I want a Model A coupe so bad, and yours is almost exactly like what I want. Great job, looking forward to more videos.
looks awesome considering your age and the fact that you have achieved what many grown men cannot, i personally think it would look more gangster with all the fenders and side steps on it, but hey thats all you. good stuff brother
Wow been so happy to see it running and driving been following since the start and am super impressed! Im 24 and in va building a 31 ford and watching these makes me wanna go out in the rain and work on it haha keep up the great work bud hope to see more of it and meet you at TROG next year!!
If you decide to chop it check out lords of customs and some others these cars make it easier to chop for obvious reasons as for your deck lid think about some short hydraulic prop rods that will keep the lid from twisting a fire extinguisher gives peace of mind too hope this helps looks great
Very nice job. I have a pile of '30 Model A coupe parts and was thinking something almost exactly what you ended up with except mine will be on '32 frame rails. I only hope to end up with something as nice as yours. I wish I had done it when I was your age. Parts were cheaper and time was plentiful. Enjoy that thing, nothing sounds like an uncorked flathead.
Your toe-in should be opposite what you stated! You want 1/8 - 3/16" toe-in at the front! In other words, the tires closer together at the front, not at the rear! With the tires spread further apart at the front, it will never track or steer properly! You also want 6-8 degrees of caster! Camber is built in to the axle. Whoever told you to open the tires at the front does not know what they're talking about! I've been building early Ford hot rods for over 35 years, happen to have a '30 coupe hi-boy at the moment with a 286" flathead, '39 top loader, '36 rear w/V8 quick change, open drive line. Drilled and dropped A front axle, split bones, F1 steering etc. Toed-in, not toed-out!
dude, great videos!..nice to see someone building these cars. i know the guys in tewksbury as well (chris). im building a 31 model A roadster with a brookville body, flathead motor with T-5 transmission. it surely is alot of work. keep up the good videos. mike in boston
The Mechanist the only upholstery in the car is the seat, and it was done supposedly by a local person with marine pleather. I actually traded some parts for it so I don't know all of the details.
Hello Ben, I see you are in Maine. So am I. I live between Farmington, Skowhegan and Sugarloaf. Is there anyway you can tell me where you are. Maybe we can get together sometime. I also am working on a '30 Model A coupe. I have had this car in my basement for about 8 years. I recently got some ambition and doing some work to it. It has a Chevy 350 that came out of a Corvette, but it is originally from a Ford pickup. It has a 4 speed tranny, which seems to sift very nicely. I know Maine towns and cities are all over the place. If you would like to meet up sometime if it is not too far, we can talk shop.
Lloyd Dalton hey Lloyd! I’m actually out in Michigan now, but the car is back in Wells. I am thinking to doing the pinetree jamboree though, so that may be the best place/ time to talk. It should be a good event
Nice car. I have a 31 Model A, Sport Coupe unrestored and in fairly good shape. Just curious, what kind of car or truck did your gauges come out of? I really like the look. Sorry if I missed it.
Just wondering about your rear suspension. Is the spring on top of the axle or behind it. I'm trying to find a spring that I can mount on top of axle. Any suggestions? Mine is a '30 sport coupe high boy.
Nice work, it's been enjoyable to watch you build this very authentic hot rod. The floors came out great! Where did you come up with the hold down clamps for your fuel tanks? I have the same 02 bottle
Christopher Dixon Thanks- I just used 16 gage flatstock. I cut two inch and a quarter wide by however long strips and welded half of a 7/8 in tube cut lengthwise to the end, and gusseted the sides of the tube back to the flat stock. I then cut and shaped a 1/4 inch thick by 1/2 inch wide piece of steel to a round profile on one side and a flat on the other. I put one of those in each side of the strap/ tube ends and put a bolt/ nut through the assembly. That allowed for the bolt to be not perfectly square to the end of the strap while still working.
Can I hire you to help me build mine. I am building a 31 Model A Coupe on 32 chassis with a 302 Ford. I want the top chopped 2" and plan on running reverse smoothie wheels.
The worst thing you can do is chop the top. Everyone does and they look like shit. Hardly enough room in the car as it is. I would suggest that you find a chopped one to sit in and see what I mean. Totally ruins the car and you cant go back. Another thing, you might try and find a beehive oil cooler. Would be really cool on your really cool car!

You realize you know more about these cars than 99% of all the kids your age! You sure know much more than I do!
Congratulations, I know its not 100% where you probably want to take it, but you have come such along way, hope you enjoyed the journey and any future journeys and projects.
