The diesel supplies electric power to the rest of the train. Steam engines don't have electric generators except for small ones for the side markers and headlights.
Thanks for your comments - Yeah, I found out after I posted this that the diesel locomotive provided power, WiFi, communications and dynamic braking AND a backup push engine if it ever became necessary..

It did have just a normal painted UP engine providing electrical power behind it. It may be delivering 4141 back to the Presidential Library.
It's going on permanent display next year.
