So I had no idea this thing was coming to town that day. At 12:17 in the video I heard it all of a sudden and it shocked me for a second I didn't know what it was at until i went outside and saw the steam. Unfortunately I never got to see it that time. But this past week a similar thing happened. Minding my own business when I got blasted again, but this time I knew what it was and I refused to miss it. I hoped in my car and followed it down to Navasota. Finally got to see it 2 years later. Whole Lotta fun.
Absolutely one of the best Big Boy pacing videos ever made. Big Boy and the George Bush tribute locomotive together gave me goosebumps and misty eyes. Very few moments in the history of railroading are as special as this occasion. A heartfelt THANK YOU for your OUTSTANDING efforts. This video is indeed one for the history books.😊👍💯❤️🚂❗
Thank you for the video!!! When I was young, my dream was to become a steam engineer. I am over 65 years old and still think of my childhood dream when I see trains like this. Thank you for this video!!! Thank you!! In Seoul, Korea.
Awesome chase video. Really cool you caught most of the trip. I was there when it crossed Old Hwy 6 at 5:17. Really weird seeing yourself in someone else's video.
The repositioning of the rods at 29:03 was not for smoother operation. I was so a couple of grease fittings could be accessed with the grease gun for greasing.
Nice Catch UP 4014 Big Boy Steam Engine Locomotive With SD70ACE George 41 H.W. Bush Heritage Power I Saw UP 4014 Big Boy Steam Engine Locomotive Magnolia Tx
The Bush unit 4141 does not have Head End Power, meaning a generator for supplying the passenger cars with electricity. That comes from one the cars themselves (UPP 2066 @ about mid train - www.up.com/cs/groups/public/documents/up_pdf_nativedocs/pdf_power_cars_historical.pdf) which has two quiet diesel / generators sets that supplies the train with necessary power for light, heat, etc. The Bush unit did however supply additional power if required and stopping via its dynamic brakes. Most likely the Bush unit was just along for window dressing, and the Big Boy had sufficient power alone. It was built to handle miles long freight in mountains, this passenger train is nothing more equivalent to a flea on Great Dane.
@@tommythomason6187 I think they need the diesels not only for the dynamic braking..but also to trip the train signals. I don't think the big boy has the capability to trip those.
@@lizzyfitz311 I didn't think about that. Bet you're right. It makes sense. Still too bad it's in the consist - a super modern diesel in a classic old train consist. The SD70ACe is a nice looking unit, though. Bet it'd be awesome to ride in the cab of one.
I saw this coming into Spring Texas yesterday and I also chased it all the way to college Station also yesterday so yeah what an Opportunity and experience it was I have 3 videos of it on my UA-cam channel check it out ♥️
Now that is a remarkable piece of old technology.

This year, one of the things i am grateful for is seeing a fully operational Big Boy.
Watching this I’m remembering stories for every mile.
One of the top 10 YT videos of the BigBoy. Great job!
Thank You!
Was cool to see it stop in downtown Navasota.
Awsome train video, excellent parallel drive! Best Regards Railherbie

Very nice! Great pacing!!
Thanks for sharing Neil , enjoyed!
I think UP Big Boy is world's Biggest, Strongest and heavier Steam engine so far....
So awesome.Unfortuantely I missed it that day.
Good job, Neil. Great video!

Comment was to point out how precisely the engine can be moved for such a monster of an engine. Neil
Hey I saw myself at the American Plant Food Corp, black jacket blue jeans at 6:43, im famous lol. Great Chase!
Nice work Neil!
Awesome...
How many different people drove 4014 on its excursion?

That guy in the maroon hoodie with the black strap is ME! No joke! Also, my parents are right next to me!
NEIL, did u have passenger video it, or were u doing the handheld?
Clayton did most of the video from the rear seats in the Chrysler Pacifica.
Neil Dahl Nice work.
The G.W. Bush unit supplies electricity to the train, but is it also pulling the train? Or, is the Big Boy doing all the work?

I've noticed that when the #4014 is traveling, on other legs, that there is always a diesel engine in the consist.
@@BEDT14 Diesels spoil the visual effect of the train. Just my opinion.

*YEAH!*
What was his speed, mostly, NEIL? Great pacing vid.
For the most part 25 to 30 mph... they were letting everyone enjoy the view! Neil
Awesome video liked Neil Dahl :)

Tyler Pike I was just west of Luling for my runby, which I posted here. Also went to Luling and videoed it’s departure.
11:26 nice
Why was the George HW Bush engine in the consist?
I believe it was being brought to the George Bush Library for a dedication ceremony . Neil
@@NeilADahl Thanks for the explanation. Much appreciated!
It's required by Federal rules. The diesel provides compressed air for the brakes and electricity for the cars and comm equipment.
@@ktl4539 Thank you.
@@ktl4539 george bush is a SD70Ace, its freight type locomotive which means it doesnt have the capability to supplying electricity to the cars
He was taking 4141 to her resting spot. Good bye 4141
The museum, of course
Classy move switching to the George Bush for this stretch.
I believe this was it's last run to College Station. It now sits on display at the GWB library.
It is unfortunate that this got political!
