Along with my husband Clay, our dogs, cats, bees, and some poultry, we live in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming and are working on setting into our own new little homestead. I've been living this lifestyle since 2014 and my wonderful partner has joined me more recently. What will you find if you follow the channel and watch the videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. We split wood for heat, fill the water tank from a gravity fed spring, and attempt to grow as much of our own food as possible between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
We live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning scenery and wildlife that we are surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of the nature and wildlife around my home. My mom and step dad live next to a farmer with many feral cats that were malnurished and ill. My parents began feeding them simply because they couldn't bear to watch them starve. This has been going on for over 30 yrs., with 100s of kittens of which the majority do not survive. We were able to tame and find homes for a few, though it was very difficult finding good homes. Now my mom is in her late 80s and unable to care for them any longer. I have seen so much suffering with kittens and cats, rotting eyes, respiratory illnesses etc etc. Also raccoons and other animals would feast on these kittens..I would find dead kittens with missing limbs. I have shed many tears over the yrs dealing with this overwhelming issue. Finally I decided enough is enough! Through a TNR program I managed to trap 13 females and 2 males and had them all fixed. You can imagine how many kittens would have been born this yr if I had not taken action. I agree it's much healthier for people and animals to keep all their healthy parts intact. Though these feral cats and their kittens were suffering horribly. The local shelters wouldn't take them as they were always full. The Humane Society didn't want adult cats especially feral cats. I honestly believe getting them spayed and neutered was the kindest thing I could do for them. They all appear happy and much healthier. A couple females have warmed up to me and even allow me to pet them. 😻 I think it's wonderful all you are able to accomplish Ariel!! I'm always amazed by your knowledge, wisdom and genuine spirit. 💕

At the time I thought it was the right thing to do but now I regret it. I would definitely have gone for the tubes tied if I knew about it. I adopted 2 kittens years ago…one an orange tabby named Blue and a gray tabby named Fat Boy because of his often full belly). Their mother was a neighborhood cat who was killed soon after kittens were born. That’s all the rescuer knew. The whole litter found amazing homes…all were thereafter spayed or neutered. Sad but happy ending.

We have a crazy cat lady around the corner. We are farm country. She refused to allow any of the cats to be trapped and fixed after many many complaints from the neighbors due to dead cats on the roadways, tons of kittens and the horrific smell of cat pee everywhere. The town finally stepped in. They were all feral cats. The fixed them and released them back to her colony and whatever kittens they could take they adopted out. She has a much more manageable colony now and they seem to stay closer to her house now.

As a person who worked or volunteered at humane societies I am always saddened by the usual population found within those confines. The problem as I always saw it are the humans who are the reason so many dogs/cats wind up in “rescue” places. If everyone could be as conscientious as you & Clay, those cages would be (mostly) empty. It’s a “hot button” issue for sure. So glad yours were born into completely good stewardship. And, no matter what - there’s nothing cuter than a kitten ….(or a puppy, or a kid (as in goat), or a calf or a colt 😂)

I’ve wondered about the impact of fixing every adult animal on its gene pool. It’s a slippery slope.

I like the way you think things through to the logical conclusion. A birder friend once informed me that all cats should be kept indoors permanently - and neutered and spayed - because cats were entirely responsible for the great reduction in songbirds in recent years. I think this is propaganda spread by people who don't want to admit that modern ag chemicals are killing off more than insects and weeds. A hundred years ago no-one spayed or neutered their pets and they all ran around outdoors catching and eating their prey, and there was no shortage of songbirds, mice or anything else.

One argument to consider having your cats spayed/neutered is to prevent them breeding with their parents and each other which will eventually lead to birth imperfections. If you could find a vet able to perform the procedure, i think having their 'tubes tied' is very expensive.

I think your reasons for how and when you choose to let your cats breed are well thought out. They work for you in your environment.
I do think the local environment plays a huge role in how people need to manage pet breeding. I live in the suburbs of a town in the UK. I would like to have a cat as a pet but there are so many around here (I see at least 5 cats visit my garden daily, often more than that) I won't add to the number. Our song birds and small mammals are under huge pressure from loss of their natural habitat and predation by cats is another stress on their populations. That is another reason for me to not have a cat. There is no one size fits all approach to responsible animal ownership.

Agreed, that became a very disturbing, misleading discourse . Animal life is totally different to human life. Comparing the 2 is sacrilegious.
Also your info on importing cats and dogs is very askew.
Can't see how your discourse on why people shouldn't neuter/spey cats & dogs is a very wrong constructed reason at all.
Reproduction in People and animals is completely different, and incomparable.
I'm shocked at the tone of this video. Not b'cos of whether we should have kittens snd puppies, of course we shall, that's why we shouldn't try to turn animals into human pets. Let animals be animals and humans be humans. They're 2 different creations. Humans are made in the image of God either a brain for choosing and a Spirit for eternal living, to have communion with our creator God.
God created Animals and all other living things for man's use and fir man to have dominion over. They have no spirit. They live they die. The are born with pre-instinct according to their breed.
I can't reconcile how or where you got such a distorted view on creation and then not discern the differences between man and animals.

Being able to see multiple sides of an issue seems to be a dying art in the human species. Agree with everything you said a 1000%
Also. Because we have manipulated our environment so much to make life easier and we don’t need rain to eat, etc, what humans “like” usually goes 100% against nature. We like sunny days over rainy ones, mature forest over brush, dry land over wet areas, free flowing rivers over tangled “messes”, animals that don’t make noise or have needs specific to them over animals we force into what works best for us, unhealthy “clean” over killing everything on anything we might touch. I could go on and on. There’s always a sweet spot. Very little 100% black and white. Humans will lose our place at the top if we don’t adjust.

Just an fyi (for inquiring minds) ...
In a female dog/bitch it is called an Ovary Sparing Spay (OSS) .... the uterus is removed, but the ovaries are left intact. That way the female dog can still retain all of the health benefits/hormones produced by the ovaries, but without a uterus they can no longer come into season/bleed/reproduce.
In a male dog, it is called a vasectomy. The vas deferens is clipped, but the gonads remain intact. Thus he is no longer able to reproduce, but still keeps his much needed hormones.
It is important to have the surgery done by an experienced vet, however, to avoid the issues of when it is done improperly.

They are so very cute! Thanks for sharing. When I was growing up on a homestead, we used to have cats and kittens because of rodant and snake control. We always grew and kept feed corn that we used to fatten the cows about a month out before butchering, and even though we had a corn crib wrapped in hardware cloth, we still had rodents, so cats and kittens were always a necessity. I had one mamma cat that refused to deliver her kittens if I did not stay there with her. My dad would not have any animal on the homestead that was not a working animal. We kept a German Shepherd for a guard dog and a beagle for a hunting dog. As much as I wanted a horse growing up, dad said it had no use on the farm and so we couldn't have one. I truly understand his philosophy. I loved the animals that we did have on the farm.

Another thought…trimming just front nails has always worked well for me. Start trimming when they are kittens, rub the top of head with fingers or nail trimmers which calms them quite a bit. When nails are trimmed, give kitten/cat a treat. (Those nails can be like fish hooks)
This helps to establish nail trimming in a positive way.
I learned this when a volunteer visited our animal shelter in Pasadena, CA back when I was in charge of a cat room. I still use this method with my own cats and clients’ cats.

I live in a rural community. We need barn cats/farm cats. This time of year there are always a litter or two, but some of us have 'fixed' our cats too. However we have another issue this time of year, folks in the city coming up to our community to 'dump' kittens & puppies. Talk to those folks about 'fixing' THEIR pets.

Totally agree. I learned some new things fromy ou too. I know a family who tried many times to foster dogs with hopes to adopt two, and they all had significant emotional problems such as crying all the time, when their favorite family member left home for a bit (even with other dog and humn family members around) or lashing out in certain situations. They tried hard to help them overcome, but didn't work. So they finally gave up and bought their current dogs as puppies.

  • @catscattying
    @catscattying Рік тому

First of all: the cats don’t do you any service. You’re THEIR servant. Make peace with that. Second: cats catch more prey than you see. But it’s okay. The way you’re set up doesn’t provide your cats with lots of places to hide and stalk birds while they’re eating and more vulnerable, and you don’t have many cats. I doubt they make any significant dent in the bird population. As long as the kittens have responsible homes to go to, it’s not a problem to allow Velcro to have a litter. But cats can and will reproduce quickly even in cold climates as long as they find shelter (such as barns) to survive the worst of winter. Our place is also in a cold climate (we get cold snaps of -22°F and below) and there’s a feral cat problem in the area. Of course, while many die due to exposure, hunger, predators, cars, cats breed rapidly. So those who make it through the winter manage to breed and keep the population going. A local trap, neuter, and release program has been helpful, but not all people who have ferals around bother with it. It’s great that your area doesn’t have a feral cat situation. As long as you and the people who adopt the kittens are mindful, the cats will be all right. :)

Interesting perspective. I appreciate that you seem to thoroughly think thru decisions. Unfortunately, millions of pets are euthanized in US shelters due to overcrowding so I hope no one is importing pets. Your analogies about cutting off a limb are weird. It's not a good analogy. I don't know what city you live near but I checked petfinder for adoptable cats in the first city I found in northern MT. There's 100+ so you shouldn't have had any issue acquiring a cat. Having spent many years in rescue I do not agree with breeding dogs/cats at this time due to the overpopulation of unwanted shelter pets. I hope all your cats get spayed/neutered.

Good talk on birth control and why cats are useful on a farm or ranch. I`f do not have them then must use lots of chemicals hat are horrible to have near anything living.
So yes to cats. Your right on animal birth control. How they are sterilised is horrible.
Same with humans. I had to have uterus removed after 11 years of pain with endometriosis 11 day heavy periods at 42.
I finally admitted I needed to let go of my uterus. This was in the late 90's
It was mental not just physical. To get the new laser operation ..so less cutting I had to see a male surgeon.
I had laser sterilisation when was 21 so knew this procedure in a way.
First I was reminded why went to female doctors when I saw on his ceiling a playboy piece of some guy in open jeans with his hand down his pants.
I stood up in the table and took it down. I gave it to the nurse when she came in and told her this is not a sex shop.
She agreed but said he thinks it helps relax??? NOOOOO. It makes me think he is a pervert. He was only doc in my area that can do that operation.
During talk he said so full hysterectomy. I said no just uterus. He said why ? you are past pregnancy stage and could get ovarian cancer.....
I almost stood up and left but the nurse was watching me. I said well look old man you are past age but still get urges dont you? I am still hoping and attractive, I like my hormones and need them.
Your business is the uterus and nothing else. he filmed he operation so I could see he left the ovaries..as if that film makes any sense to me..haaaa Yes we need our hormones.

Who wouldn't want kittens? As long as they are cared for and neutered, they're great at pest control and funny companions. There can be too much of a good thing, just like any animal. They're not as devastating on the local bird population as people think, that lands squarely on the laps of humans who destroy habitats. As many cats as I've had only two were good hunters, and we had no shortage of small wildlife.

    @pjr7754 Рік тому

I always worry when someone who has a YT channel decides to pause their filming in order to have a "sit down" to philosophize and offer forth their world view on everything. Outdoor cats can kill up to four billion birds a year, birds who could be eating insects, pollinating plants, spreading seeds, and singing their songs for our enjoyment. The cat population needs to be managed, and if that means taking out their uteruses, ovaries and testicles then so be it. Around here if you walked into a vet's office and asked for a tubal ligation on your cat they would laugh at you. Cats starve, get killed, predated, become sick, and are targeted by some sickos out there. There are simply too many cats out there who are not managed and they are perpetuating the cycle. You can do what you want with your cat(s) and leave them intact and outside for rodent control. If you do, you may want to revisit this little talk in about 5 years and see how you are doing with your population. BTW I am a cat owner. She is shelter cat that no one wanted, and is spayed and confined to the indoors.

Oh myyy!!! i'm glad i found your channel. I talk about this topic in another channel and got alot of attack which i don't care as you say everybody have their opinion, it was about animal adoption and people who give up on their animal or are cruel to animals.
I think there are alot of shelters in the US because there is no good law to protect the Animals which makes it easy for ppl to get away with animal cruelty so as leading to many animals in the shelters.
A lady said to me ... some ppl have reasons like aggresion or with economy to give up animal to shelter, I answer her by asking her, if her child become aggressive or she was poor will she give up her child? to me mý animals are part of my family and we do not give up on family, just that simple. And why do people get pets without learning what it takes to own a pet, it's just selfishness, as if the pets are a pair of shoes that you throw away when you don't need it anymore.
Thank you for sharing and kittens are gorgeous❤❤❤❤

I recently got a GSD that I’ve wanted for a long time… even my vet was so condescending towards my decision to not spay her, to the point I’m not even going back to that vet 👀 after doing my own personal study, ripping out her organs as an adolescent is a money grab! I live in the woods, on the side of a mountain and hardly hear another dog bark and I still get side eye for not spaying her 🙈 blows my mind how ppl take “authority’s” word without doing their own research. In my opinion, the only animal that it makes sense is horses, only bc I worked on a breeding farm and they can be quite dangerous if not gelded. Love you Ariel! Keeping it natural 💜
