Please please keep doing these videos…I am 71 and have never ever been to New York…so,I am seeing it all through your eyes…..you are the most handsome guy…but I like it better when you don’t wear a hat because you have beautiful hair and a gorgeous face!
The reason she has that cheap rent is because that was what the rent was ( or maybe slightly lower) when her aunt and uncle contracted for 25 or 30 years ago. The rent control agreement only stays intact, if the new tenant is a blood relative of the previous one and you have to demonstrate that you are a closely related person ( in other words it doesn't work for a 3rd cousin, step son, etc. ) There are fewer and fewer of these rent controlled apartments in New York because over the years, older people who had these leases moved away or passed, etc. Once the apt. is empty again, the landlord can make changes and take it up to rent for market value. ( There is another category of apartment lease called "rent stabilized" with different rules that results in somewhat higher rates than rent control but still better than market rate.) But all these things are subject to change if NYC housing law changes. If I were her I would take advantage of this time to save money in case the situation changes at some point.
For anyone who didn’t watch the full video: She lives in downtown Manhattan in a prime location and her apartment is rent controlled. She said her family started renting two apartments in the building in the 1990’s and they were across from one another, so she grew up in that complex. Her aunt and uncle rented her current apartment that you see here in the video and she moved into it when they moved out.
My uncle lived in the apartment my family lives in currently in the 80’s. Then my mom moved in with him, he eventually moved out and my aunts moved in with my mom then my mom started her family, my aunts eventually moved out, and the rent is now $1600 monthly. It’s a 1 bedroom and both the living room & bedroom are very spacious. You can even convert the living room into another bedroom if you wanted because it’s separated from the kitchen, bathroom, and all three closets via a hallway. The entrance of the apartment leads directly into the kitchen and from there you can walk down the hallway to the bathroom, living room, or bedroom. I wish the apartment was cheaper tho. The rent has definitely increased since my uncle first snatched it up in the 80s..it’s also in Jackson Heights in Queens so..still pretty expensive for the area 😕
They aren't creating new rent controlled apartments. You would need a relative already living in a rent controlled apartment and the landlord would have to agree with your name being added to the lease.
@@FaithandNovaDUH. SHE said it was rent controlled specifically, NOT me. I didn’t just come up with the idea out of thin air. She didn’t elaborate on who the specific lease holder currently is, so you’re just speculating, but if you feel that I posted wrong information, you’re always more than welcome to watch the video your darn self instead of trying to make it seem like I don’t know what I’m talking about when I DID watch the 7 minute video 🥴
Shes beautiful but the neighbors know her voice through the walls. Its one thing to be performative in front of a camera. Who really knows...shes probably really nice but we only have this. Great first impression!
As I mentioned in another comment reply, she said rent controlled. That's even stricter than rent stabilized. Depending on the succession rules, the apartment might go to market rates and she could be on the hook for past months' rent payments.
Rent control is wonderful for people who get it, but it screws over everyone else. The fundamental problem is that there is huge demand for apartments in NYC and not enough supply for everyone, so prices are bid up. Rent control discourages the creation of more housing units. It also creates inefficiencies that result in sub optimal housing allocation. For example, a single person living in an inherited 3 br apartment with 2 unused rooms. They can't leave because smaller apartments are more expensive than the rent controlled 3br, so now most of their place is sitting empty while families who could use the space struggle to find a place. The only solution is to encourage more housing construction to meet demand. That is how Tokyo solved their housing crisis. The regulations are very loose in Tokyo so developers are free to build housing units of all shapes and sizes to meet demand, and prices are stable despite the fact that Tokyo has had a steadily increasing population and lots of people want to live there. Meanwhile, in Stockholm Sweden, every apartment is rent controlled, which sounds great until you learn that the waitlist is 10 years long. That is not a solution. If supply is less than demand, then you will always have problems.
Lived in that area when I first moved to NYC( I’m guessing Lower East Side). Moved into a rent stabilized building, prewar, no elevator, 6th floor walk up. Yes, 6 floors. The lady who lived there before us, was a 92 y/o Turkish woman, she walked those stairs everyday till she passed away. Her family didn’t want to take over the apartment. We paid $950/month, they raised the rent by $25 every year. Amazing right? Some of the other tenants, mostly Chinese and Spanish, had lived in the building for decades. They were paying $100, more or less/month. Rent stabilization is the best thing ever. Only downside of the building was, the water pressure sucked, we literally boiled water on the stove to bath in the mornings. Also no elevator but that wasn’t so bad because we got in really great shape lol. Also the neighborhood was a bit shady but then gentrification changed the area 360 degrees. Delancey Street was scary at night.
this apartment is so damn big for 350 dollars in nyc, just shows how it really is to spend two thirds of your paycheck on rent for a storage room. She's so bright she made the cameraman talk
I already posted this under a comment but: As someone who’s lived in NYC my entire life, native New Yorkers ARE naturally like her. Even before I clicked on the video, I saw the price and looked at her and immediately thought, “inherited rent-controlled apartment/one of us❤.” Period. In fact, most of my friends who are still in NYC either have an apartment that was passed down to them or live with their parents. And I will say this, the insanely-high rent prices were NOT our creation. 😬 My real estate people have to carry the bag on that one 👀
There are about 16,400 rent controlled apartments in nyc. Succession rights work like this. If a family member lives the family member tenant two year prior to the death or permanent leaving of the apartment ( one year for senior citizens or disabled persons), that family member will then have the lease to the apartment.
@@snickersimsocute2438 thank you! I thought it was something like that. One more question, if you know. Compared to the number of apartments in NY, that seems a low number of rent controlled. Is it a set number or what?
Unfortunately nothing will change until you take personal ownership. How can you argue for rent control when its only resulted in higher rent??? Elect officials that will take care of the people, not themselves.

The phrase she used is rent-controlled which is stricter than rent-stabilized. I would be concerned about the landlord seeing this as it's possible that the succession from her aunt & uncle to her would cause the rent to go to market rates.

There’s very few things that is she does it would trigger an eviction notice…renting out her rent stabilized apartment and making money from even a roommate is a definite NO. She’s amazing. Love her. I imagine in any other building you could add a zero to the end of that rent. Also I assume it’s never gone up because she or a family member has had their name on the lease for 20+ years.
The problem with these small apartments is the dwellers don’t know how to utilize the high ceilings enough for more storage. There could be more kitchen cabinets or metal shelving above the current ones for so much more storage. There’s literally so much space up higher to make use of along the walls. She would have less clutter and more walking space.

This apt is only $350 it’s not really small compared to the others you’ve interviewed. I would definitely stay for decades in that apt. I miss nyc best place ever and her entire personality is amazing
What an awesome, upbeat person she is. Full of life and energy. We need more people like her. She should be in a job dealing with the public, everybody would love her.
Lovely 🎉
of course she is upbeat! she is living in the middle of NYC for $350/mo. who wudnt' be upbeat with that..... that apartment is a $2k apartment. she one the jackpot having relatives gift that to her
Caleb…I just LOVE you even MORE…I am so glad you spent longer in this video…the more of you…the more better!
They had to have added her to the lease before they left cuz they don't allow another family member to just take over.
Thanks lmao saved me time title so misleading but more black people need to do things like that
They aren't creating new rent controlled apartments.
Not only I love her apartment, this is one of the best conversations among all your videos I've watched! 💖
Her personality is AMAZING!! I love how upbeat and happy she seems..just going with the flow and enjoying life. Love it!
Shes beautiful but the neighbors know her voice through the walls. Its one thing to be performative in front of a camera. Who really knows...shes probably really nice but we only have this. Great first impression!
h1 you from usa?
a rent stabilized apartment in NYC is the dream 😭
As I mentioned in another comment reply, she said rent controlled. That's even stricter than rent stabilized. Depending on the succession rules, the apartment might go to market rates and she could be on the hook for past months' rent payments.
I was about to say rent stabilize still goes up and changes not that much but it still changes 😢
*rent contolled omg ppl calm down
@@alexiszollicoffer1257how much you pay ?
Love her energy and attitude! 💜💜💜
Whenever I don’t like my house, I turned on these videos. After 3 mins, I feel blessed again
Can you explain what went control/stabilization is in layman’s terms and how it works? Who benefits?
@@loria287 simply put, landlords can raise the rent each year by only a small percentage(3% more of less).
I was going to guess LES for sure. Maybe alphabet city. Good east side vibes
@@loria287 In addition to the price increase limitations, it includes various rights that market rate ones don't.
@@TheArnolds326 it looked like Allen Street from the opening shot
this apartment is so damn big for 350 dollars in nyc, just shows how it really is to spend two thirds of your paycheck on rent for a storage room. She's so bright she made the cameraman talk
I already posted this under a comment but:
As someone who’s lived in NYC my entire life, native New Yorkers ARE naturally like her.
I've never had rent control so i dont get how it passes to someone else. Could you explain that, pls?
There are about 16,400 rent controlled apartments in nyc. Succession rights work like this. If a family member lives the family member tenant two year prior to the death or permanent leaving of the apartment ( one year for senior citizens or disabled persons), that family member will then have the lease to the apartment.
@@snickersimsocute2438 thank you! I thought it was something like that. One more question, if you know. Compared to the number of apartments in NY, that seems a low number of rent controlled. Is it a set number or what?
I wish my mom had lived in an apartment to pass to me :(
Unfortunately nothing will change until you take personal ownership. How can you argue for rent control when its only resulted in higher rent??? Elect officials that will take care of the people, not themselves.
Her personality just made the whole video. Much love to her
She is adorable!! I love her apt!! Great job Caleb!!
You deserve your generational wealth gurl! I love growing up and raising my daughter in Brooklyn, NYC. Never got robbed because NYC teaches you how to move. Trust me, when she's in the streets she knows how to put that street face on.
She doesn't own that apartment, that's not generational wealth.
@@Softpaws15 No one owns anything really except our souls. Its the only thing that can't be taken away from us.
🙏 ✝️
We only hold temporary possession of it.
Have a great day.
@@sparkle3000 Generational wealth is something of value which is owned that can be passed down to heirs.
She is so awesome. Her apt looks bigger than a lot of the places you filmed. She scored with this rent!
probably because it's either a fake price, or she does extra favors for that kind of price.
@@yikes710 No, It's not fake and she doesn't do any favours your creepy hater. It's rent controlled idiot. Her uncle/aunt lived there for decades and they passed it to her
She inherited the rent controlled lease probably
Facts this ain’t a tiny space
@@yikes710 its rent controlled. do your research
More apartments need to be rent stabilized like this one!! The rent you need to pay in New York is honestly insanity…it feels like ur working to just pay bills to live in an apartment that could be better.
The phrase she used is rent-controlled which is stricter than rent-stabilized. I would be concerned about the landlord seeing this as it's possible that the succession from her aunt & uncle to her would cause the rent to go to market rates.
@@bikeny I agree the landlords are greedy and usually apt inheritance is only supposed to go to children, not nieces and nephews. I would not have gone online and aired this.
@@michblu legit seriously!! Honestly kinda dumb lol! I've always heard it was only children that could qualify for rent controlled housing! As far as passing on the same unit I mean. She may just regret doing this
Rent stabilized is different from rent controlled. Hers is rent controlled.
Rent controls increase the rents of the surrounding non-rent-controlled apartments - it's part of the problem, not the solution.
We need more people like her in the world. She is pure sunshine
This girl is pure positive vibes
Your personalities meshed so well. I feel like you've made a forever friend. I was waiting for you to rate the bed and try pregnancy pillow though lol
She's blessed, I hope they don't eventually try and force her out ❤️
Agreed, she indeed is. And they won’t because they can’t.
Same. This was such a cool space
There’s very few things that is she does it would trigger an eviction notice…renting out her rent stabilized apartment and making money from even a roommate is a definite NO. Also a RS apartment has to be your permanent residence. You can’t live 8 months of the year some place else. You’ll be evicted.
I was thinking that too, I probably wouldn’t let him tour the place only because I’d be concerned about that.
@@vanessazannis5523 You're allowed to have roommates, but they can only pay up to their exact share of the actual rent. So up to $175 if she gets one.
Loving her energy. That body pillow is a mood
This is the largest tiny apartment I’ve ever seen! It’s very very unique which makes it cool. Akasha is hilarious 😊 love this channel and videos. ❤
LOVE EVERYTHING about this young woman, the crazy-cool apartment and the video's VIBE !
She should have her own sitcom or tv show or something. Caleb you seem to bring the best out of people, great job 🙌🏻
❤️
This "tiny" apartment actually looks pretty spacious from what we can see on the video! Very cool use of space!😀
I really dig her apartment! The kitchen setup is creative, haven't seen that before. Her glasses are also super cute! This video feels very relatable and genuine, as well as satisfying my need to see inside people's tiny tiny homes.
Rewatch this because i like the apt and i really love her personality. Thank you for interviewing her, caleb!
She has the most upbeat, bubbly, personality! This has truly been a joy to watch! 🤗😁✌️
I have to say this is probably one of my favorite tours of all very authentic and wholesome her and her place are awesome
Aww... She deserves to have super-affordable rent... love her spirit and the place is so cute ❤

Love it!! Such a great space for only one person. She's so full of life. You two seemed like you had a lot of fun filming this.
I love her vibe! From now on, could you please do all the apt tours with her as a sidekick?
I love her. She's a breath of fresh air. Seems like she makes every situation positive.
I’m so happy for her! As someone who struggles with the idea of living in NYC due to the ridiculous rent fees; it’s nice to see someone in a place that’s more than reasonably priced!
Do you actually live in nyc and work your ass off or just sit there and think about the struggle?
I gonna say it, this ONE is my fave so far! The camaraderie you had with her fleshed out her personality. The shorts are good, don't get me wrong. But this one right here, just hit different and brought a smile to this native new yorker. Just when I thought, how in the ham sandwich are people living in NYC, your shorts/reels show up, but this one is a gem!
@sayiddah bey....lol permission to add "how in the ham sandwich" to situations in my daily life...literally lol

i particularily enjoyed this apartment tour, there is just such a great vibe and positive mood between the three of them (incl. camera man) … feels like being part of hanging out with friends and chatting + Caleb’s genuine laughing is quite infectious
Dude, honestly this is my favorite apartment on here. Hella jealous & she seems bubbly & creative. I love taking small spaces & making it homey.
not only was she such a legend, i feel like the vibe got a little flirty and cozy just cuz of how cool she is
Ok l would watch Caleb and Akasha on a reality show just talking, hanging out and being adorable 😍

I really enjoyed this one! Her positivity is contagious! You're doing a great job showing the good side of NYC and bringing out people's vulnerability. I love your channel and I subscribed!
Think Caleb is taken but I was low key rooting for them to get together. 😊
These kinds of apartments are generational. Meaning that pretty much only NYC Families have access to things like this!
She seems like the most fun person in the kitchen for sure! What a fun lady! And such a cool apartment to inherit! She’s blessed ❤
Wonderful episode. She's so authentic and positive, and her place reflects her personality so well. You guys really should do a show together :)
I had an opportunity to live there, this is the very exact one I’d like to have: no need to be luxury with rooftop with several bedrooms, but cheap and livable ! Happy for her 😊
She is a very wholesome human being. I love her energy, she will definitely be a great friend to have! Love her creativity as well
She's awesome, she's literally sunshine in human form.
I’d move to NYC in a heartbeat if I could snag a place like this for the price 😍 I looooooove her spirit and personality! She’s a gem.

I just assume she had a roommate until I saw the whole video I’m like girl I live in Texas and I pay way more rent than she does 😅 this woman is blessed.
Same here, I pay way more even with the rent split between 3 ppl here in Texas.
Texas is gonna be like New York and California in terms of cost of living pretty soon too, it’s crazy
I’m guessing it depends on city for Texas im sure the country has some low cost living but maybe at the cost of convince

She’s amazing. Love her. I imagine in any other building you could add a zero to the end of that rent. Also I assume it’s never gone up because she or a family member has had their name on the lease for 20+ years.
I really see the vibes are going on between two of them and I enjoy the way Caleb looked at her. 😊🤭
Love her vibes too. 💙
They are eye flirting a ton. It's cute
I caught that too! His whole vibe was sooooo different in this one.
they are marred now.
Love these two! They need a show together 🎉
Bro that's not a small apartment for $350 rather minimalistic and decent one. Love it.
Her energy is everything. Love her and don't even know her.
She made it so homey and pretty it doesn’t even look tiny at all. Great job !
I genuinely want to be best friends with this woman!!! Her energy is so bright and positive and powerful!!!! I love it.
