Derek Knee, the interpreter who "got a kick out of it" sadly died today at the age of 91.

If you ever see Useless If Delayed by Paul Wyand the cameraman here, grab it - it's long out of print but it's a fascinating read about newsreel reporting in the 20's through 50's.

Thank You. Remember seeing him as a child on TV. As a young man I worked with guys who'd served under him in Al Alamein. All of them thought he was brilliant.

    GREATLY HONORED TO GENERAL MONTY!

Monty was like the Headmaster chastising the naughty schoolboys. It would be funny if it was not so bloody serious. History forgives but never forgets.

Thanks. Monty was complex like many top military leaders. Ruthless but poetic. A showman. Beat the enemy militarily but also phychologically.

A young lieutenant by the name of Patrick Moore who went on to be known as the great astronomer Sir Patrick Moore remembered what the Germans in that tent said: “ we have learnt that attempting to dominate and destroy our enemies through military means was a mistake, from now on we will approach the problem from a geopolitical and economic perspective.“ The British officers laughed at the arrogance. Well, they’re not laughing today are they, why? Well, is it by accident and coincidence that Germany now is the dominant power in the EU?

Funny fact: both of the germans who signed at the tent commited suicide soon after this. Really sad to imagine their feelings, they felt like they had no more purpose.

@@martinpatrick9915 Perhaps in those days it was still considered an an honour to do so, however regrettable. Even so, this was still the same German army responsible for the most appalling atrocities against unarmed British and allied soldiers, and countless civilians in cold blood.

In fact, two of the three committed suicide. Von Friedeburg, following his arrest; and Kinzel, in late June. The third, Wagner, went on to have a career rebuilding the West German navy. I think it is crystal ball-gazing to attribute motive. But it's hard to believe that German war leaders wouldn't be profoundly depressed, hopeless, and terrified. These people were already on the edge of insanity, and had a direct role in the utter destruction of their nation - not to mention the countless deaths they were responsible for. And then facing victor's justice? Including judgment by the Russians, whom they sought to enslave and liquidate? Yeah, I might be suicidal, too.

HMS Lion I don't know if you have noticed but there has been peace in Europe for more than 70 years. This was due to Winston Churchill's vision a "United States of Europe" - The Little Englanders have now taken over and Naziism is rife in the South East

@@stewartnicol3028 ...I THINK THE "70 YEAR PEACE IN EUROPE" WAS THE RESULT OF GERMANY BEING CRUSHED, DISMEMBERED, AND OCCUPIED- SINCE THE END OF WW2!!!
IT'S WORTH NOTING THAT THERE HAS BEEN PEACE IN KOREA FOR ALMOST 60 YEARS- AND THAT IS VERY LIKELY DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE U.S. HAS MAINTAINED A MILITARY PRESENCE IN SOUTH KOREA SINCE THE END OF THE KOREAN WAR?!
...AND DOES ANYONE REMEMBER WHEN THEN PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER WANTED TO REMOVE U.S. FORCES FROM SOUTH KOREA?! WHAT DO YOU THINK WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THE U.S. HAD DONE THAT(?)
