I'm a big fan of how you put shadows behind characters in the cutscenes to mimic cell animation. Everything about this mod looks so good, keep up the amazing work!
Was going to comment this as well. It's a really nice detail.
It could be improved with shading ON the characters. As it is the shadows are outlining Homer which gives the illusion he's standing right in front of a wall painted like a living room.
@@KRBrickBot No, you're missing the point. The shadows are supposed to be around the characters, because animation cells tend to cast shadows on the background, causing that effect. It's hard to notice unless you're watching an HD rip, but the older episodes really do look like that. Watch older episodes on a modern streaming platform like Disney Plus and you'll see it.
I disagree, the shadows are the only complaint I have with the animations..
Fake cell shadows is fine, but El Gato is doing it wrong. They are too heavy and should only be about 2 pixels thick. Smiling Friends did it really well.
I think the pixelated in-universe video game animation looks good and neat, and also matches other times the show had in-universe game footage
I was initially going to say I don't remember video games in the show looking pixelated, but after watching a few clips, I see it's a bit inconsistent. Sometimes games are actually pixelated, sometimes they have a blocky artstyle so they look pixelated, and sometimes they don't even bother. But pixelated seems like the most common.
I want to play this so bad. One game Dev to another, this is super impressive stuff.

The amount of time, work, and love put into this mod is very clearly showing itself in these videos. It's honestly insanely inspirational to see this drastic of an overhaul being given to such a classic.
PS - having the thickness for the lines be between what was shown is definitely the way to go, it would probably look even more authentic than what was in the video. Having the game be pixelated also seems like a good idea.
personally i like the thin line design, but i also havent watched the simpsons in a while so thats probably just me forgetting some of the details

This is a great idea! Perhaps the pixelated take with scanlines and an NTSC colour-bleed filter?
I think it should just be remade entirely with proper pixel-art, and then with scanlines and a composite color-bleed filter as Erdrick suggested.
The pixelated filter actually looks really good and similar to how faux video games are portrayed in the show
But I'd love to see an actual pixel art take on it as well if an artist is willing

The cell shading makes it look worse. The art style is actually better in the original. Simpsons game cell shading looks bad.

Hey, im truly admiring what are you doing, literally, remastering completely a game by your own, and getting at the point to learning the art style of matt groening to make the animations been equal to the show, hope you can get much more higher after this, and take your own time to do everything, we don't pressure you, so you don't pressure yourself ^^
Holy smokes. I'm not really into the Simpsons, but this showed up in my recommended, and the love and care you put into this mod is INCREDIBLE.

The Looter arcade game having the pixel filter actually works considering the show used to use pixel filters for video game parodies all the time.
One change I would personally make would be to make the outlines on the player characters slightly thicker, but otherwise it all looks great! The effort taken to recreate the cutscenes in the classic simpsons style is commendable.
4:36 "Don't eat FEEF BY EL BARTO" XD that killed me of laugh, the meme stills there.
I know a lot of people have probably already said this, but this looks SO GOOD. It's one thing to remake the gameplay with higher quality graphics or QOL improvements, but redoing the CUTSCENES in the style of the show's own animation is just pure magic!

Dreams is still quite difficult to work with but I'll keep working my hardest.
If you're wondering which lines to do for that scene, I'd suggest thinner lines for Marge (who is in the background) and thicker lines for Homer (who is in the foreground).
Love seeing the animations you make for this! Although personally there's something strange about how homer turns his head but doesn't really look at Marge. Might be better to just him stay looking forward. Also it makes a lot of sense to have Marge sitting down as she actually does that it in the shot prior, but could be an idea to put something in her hands like a magazine or something that indicates why she's going to sit down.
Honestly, this is looking really, really good this mod. You can tell that there’s love being put into this project. Can’t wait to see the final product.
In terms of the cutscenes, I definitely agree with going with something in between thin lines and thicker lines.
I much prefer those thin lines on the animation, and I quite like the pixelation on the screen the only other thing that could be a potential alternative that would be cool is doing the regular animation with maybe scan lines or something for a more vintage screen effect.

Indeed, the thin lines on the animated cutscenes make it look more HD like the Simpsons movie. While Homer looks okay with the thicker lines while he's close to the camera in that clip, Marge farther in the background doesn't look as good with the thick lines IMO.
This is seriously impressive, great work! The animation is truly a feat to behold, the fact that this is all the work of one person is really something, and you've been doing a great job! If there's one thing I would suggest (and its something small), it would be to have Homer's hands as fists instead pf open. He looks sort of awkward when running and driving with his fingers fully extended. Looking forward to seeing the next progress vid!
I think how you experimented with pixelization in that video game scene worked really well to preserve the fact that their TV is indeed old, but the quality of the visuals don't have to be. That being said, I feel like using either is fine. Both versions looked good.
The fact that you've gone out of your way to learn the simpsons artstyle to remake is really impressive and inspiring coming from another artist/animator. My only advice is for 5:51 is to remove the shadow behind homers head, as it makes the background appear flat. I really hope to see more progress as I've been keeping up with this project for a couple of months. Good luck.
For the video game footage, I like the look of cel-style animation run through a blocky filter, because that's pretty much what the show did whenever someone played a video game, like Dash Dingo.
It works in both making it more like the Simpsons show and more like an arcade super-scaler. It makes the scenery more readable as you're whipping by. Win-win. Great work.
There was more work put into this than most "remasters" nowadays.

Yeah I think you're right that line thickness somewhere in the middle would be best. The thin one looks more similar to modern Simpsons, while in the thick one Marge looks strange
I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but I cannot WAIT for level 7. It was always my favorite (minus the last mission t.t) because of all the spooky :) I loved this game growing up and honestly don't mind what I see next from you because I know It'll be amazing!
I'd say with the game thingy, especially if you go the pixel route, it might be a good idea to mess around with some blur/colour blending to replicate the sorta signal you'd get through a composite lead.
It'd definitely be accurate to how most folks were playing games around the time Hit & Run came out.

I like how it has that nfs unbound design to it characters with cartoonish effects and the buildings and environment having less cartoonish appearances I like this
This is ridiculously impressive. The Simpsons was my favorite show growing up and this game is up there as one my all time favorites. Seeing getting the love it deserves is amazing. Keep up the good work you a real G.
I actually like the pixelated look in the arcade game best - it helps make it look more distinct from the main style of the game. Also in the show, whenever the kids are playing older arcade games they look pixelated as well!
Overall this looks amazing, I hope this has been a fun project!

I think non pixelated on the TV scene and thinner lines on the other scene look the best. The dedication and quality that you have by copying the OG style is incredible.

I think the "thin" lines in the animation you showed are absolutely fine! I also think the Buzz Cola glass signs have black outlines that ware way too thick and look bad from further away.

This looks amazing. I do think Homers model and the cars could use a touch up. The art style is going from 3D to cell so it’d probably look better to make have details like the shine on the sedan be more animated rather than realistic.
I kinda like the pixellation in the video game shot, it kinda looks like something you'd actually see in the series. Keep it up! :D

For me, this mod looks like RoSA Project Evolved for GTA SA, which try to recreate all textures of GTA SA, but the RoSA try to recreate using original image sources that the Rockstar used to create the original textures. It's incredible!

It's inspiring to see a single person remaster a game like this.
I really like the cutscene changes, and your ability to mimic the original style when recreating art assets is superb. I do worry that some of the color decisions and details of the original textures of 3D levels is being lost with the more show-accurate textures you've created, but that's not enough to stop me from enjoying the amazing work you've done!
This is super cool!! One thing that is noticeable though is the tone of character's skin and the grass- the saturation and luminescence on them make them almost like highlighter, and in motion kind of hurts the eyes in such high contrast. I think the deep purple is a great choice for the roads though!! I also love the reanimated cutscene, and I agree that an in-between of the linework would look best. I think something that might help give that effect is having two layers of the thin linework, but set the second to a slight gaussian blur? That's how I make a dithered/aged cartoon look in my art!
